Wikileaks Offers $20,000 Reward For Info On Obama Admin Destroying Records

Tyler Durden's picture

WikiLeaks is offering a $20,000 reward to anyone who exposes the destruction of "significant records" by a member of the Obama administration. In a tweet on Tuesday evening, Wikileaks said “We are issuing a US$20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest or exposure of any Obama admin agent destroying significant records,” however, it has not explicitly alleged that the administration is suspected of inappropriately eradicating material.

The surprising announcement may have been provoked by a previous tweeted in which Wikileaks hinted that the US government is quietly eradicating mentions of the organization from official statements: "'WikiLeaks' disappears from US govt statements. Compare 7 Oct  2016, vs 16 December, 2016 & December 29, 2016 JAR"

Ten minutes prior to offering the reward, WikiLeaks urged any system administrator working under Obama to become whistleblowers: “System admins: Don't let the White House destroy US history again! Copy now, then send to WikiLeaks at your leisure.”

Embedded in the tweet was a screenshot of a 2009 email sent from Principal Deputy Counsel for the Obama administration Daniel Meltzer to James Messina, then-White House deputy chief of staff. The mail discusses a query from the National Archives as to the whereabouts of a missing and believed stolen two terabyte drive containing electronic records from the Bill Clinton administration. The email was forwarded to Hillary Clinton by aide Cheryl Mills.

As RT adds, Republicans have also run into trouble over their lack of preservation of administration emails. The George W Bush administration lost millions of emails in the lead-up to the war in Iraq, claiming they had been accidentally mislabeled. The messages were later recovered. Federal Law calls for the preservation of presidential records, however personal records are exempt.

The tweets were issued just hours before the airing of the full Sean Hannity interview with Julian Assange, which is already the topic of at least two Trump tweets, as noted earlier. In the first tweet, Trump sided with Assange's side of the story that Russia was not involved in the hacking of the DNC, as follows "Julian Assange said "a 14 year old could have hacked Podesta" - why was DNC so careless? Also said Russians did not give him the info!" In a follow up tweet, Trump quoted Assange in bashing the US press: "Julian Assange on U.S. media coverage: “It’s very dishonest.”" More dishonest than anyone knows."

$20k is chump change... that has to have a few more zeros....

SubjectivObject's picture

Was going to state the same thing.

Wikileaks does not improve its objectivity by making these shallow proposals.

Assange might already have the info. He did almost the same “reward” thing before the Podesta e-mails were published.

I don’t trust any organization that profusely criticizes Obama and Hillary. WikiLeaks sticks to high heaven of racism, sexism and Russian propaganda.

Why not just go full fucking retard until either your head or your future credibility (or both) explode?

"CNN airs ex-Deputy-Director of the CIA falsely calling Assange a pedophile"

That plot we all remember to stitch him up with the fake dating agency sting, remember?

Probably CIA.

To which the response from Wikileaks: "We have issued instructions to sue CNN for defamation unless within 48h they air a one hour expose of the plot."

This is getting beyond seriously hilarious and into the realm of batshit fucking crazy. Trump said peeps would get tired of winning, but the crafty bugger said nothing about laughing till you cannot take anymore because of the pain in your sides.

They're going to need more scratch to persuade anyone who hasn't already done it out of conscience.  Also, the Obama administration doesn't destroy records, they suffer from fortunate technical mishaps.

Last note, when I had govt email I was instructed not to use it for personal business. Personal records shouldn't be exempt from records keeping, they shouldn't be in the official inbox in the first place unless there's going to be third party oversight.

You folks ever heard of assymmetric warfare? $20k to cause hundreds of millions if not billions to the DNC? Hmmm Trump seemed to do just fine on a small budget.

Re $20k chump change:

The price has to be high enough to encourage genuine leakers but not so high that it encourages any old treasure hunters to try their luck.  True leakers should be doing so out of a sense of duty, not for the cash, but nevertheless, when fear rules and careers are on the line perhaps an incentive is needed to push them over the line.  The other thing we do NOT want is for leakers to wait until a reward is offered before they step forward.  The truth needs to come out immediately, not in six years time when someone finally decides to offer a reward.

This is the tightrope they have to walk.  It is not a nice place to be.  It's a shame it has to happen this way but the real world is not as pleasant as we would like it to be.

gladih8r's picture

$20k is plenty of an incentive for every highschool-age haxor out there to try their luck.  And there are hundreds of thousands of them out there.

This may work out just fine yet.

"$20k is chump change... that has to have a few more zeros...."

Windows admins probably aren't as highly paid as you might think. Not to suggest they would make the lift solely for money. They likely will not.

But the value of the reward is that it is publicly offered, not the amount. This offer permits WL to publish an indirect accusation of probable wrongdoing. That's the message. That's the motivation. Never mind the money.

They are aiming this message to sysadmins in a position to easily lift whatever records they choose, all without leaving a trace. IMO, that's how the DNC (but not the Paneta) emails were snatched.

Anyone who dismisses the death of Seth Rich as a robbery gone bad is either exceedingly naive or exceedingly corrupt. Assaunge has virtually named him as the source of the DNC leak (not hack).

Wikileaks has done a lot of good but do ye all not think that... is highly significant that Assange will not release documents relating to Israel's obvious involvment in 911?? I would say that they were without doubt - the primary actors in that unforgivable atrocity. It is not without precednt either. Israel has murdered U.S citizens in false flags before - think USS liberty for instance.

The grotesque reprecussions of 911 has to this very day, shaped US foreign policy that has led to disatrous wars in the Middle East with the loss of millions of lives and individual liberties for citizens around the world.

Makes me think that wikileaks is a tool to prevaricate, distract and cover up Israel's evil crimes if anything.

detached.amusement's picture

Right, so you're making the assumption that he has material on 911?  Anyone with half a brain wants 911 investigated for real, prosecuted for real, but to assume wikileaks is withholding some juicy 911 material is entirely speculative.

Its not like they hacked the Bushes, or Cheney, or Rumsfeld, or the mossad...they didnt hack shit, they were given leaked material.

I think you're really just wondering why Anonymous hasnt done more damage, in which case, you probably misinterpreted the pieczenik vid.

onewayticket2's picture

Wikileaks needs a GoFundMe page for this effort.  $20k will not buy enough life insurance for the leaker.

How about the man who exposed the Rolling Stone scam on UV fake rape. He has a page where you can set up contributions for a good cause like this but i forgot his name. My guess is the reward would soar to over $100k easily.
