Poland Acquires First Strike Capability To Pose Threat To Russia

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Peter Korzun via Strategic-Culture.org,

It should be noted that quite often the most interesting arms contracts escape media attention. That’s how it was in 2016.

Signing a multi-billion-dollar military aid package between the United States and Israel and the subsequent White House approval for long-awaited fighter sales to the Middle East hit the radar screen.

In late September, the US approved the sales of Boeing fighters worth a total of around $7 billion to Kuwait and Qatar. First mooted around two years ago, the deals had been held up by the US government due to Israeli concerns and in order to smooth the way for nuclear talks with Iran.

The same month, a $38-billion Israeli arms package over the next 10 years - the largest of its kind ever – was finalized and signed.

The news about those contacts was a real scoop hitting the headlines of all mainstream media outlets. In late November, the State Department approved another transaction- the acquisition of 70 AGM-158B JASSM-ER (extended range) missiles for Poland. The deal undeservedly failed to attract much attention. In fact, it matters much and changes a lot.

The prospects for the acquisition of the extended range version were discussed as far back as 2014. The US obviously procrastinated due to political considerations. The decision to make the deal go through makes Poland the first state outside the United States to acquire the JASSM-ER.

In 2014, Poland signed a contract to procure the JASSM AGM-158A version for its F-16C/D jets. The stealth missile is designed to destroy ground targets at distances 370+km (230 mi). As of 2014, the JASSM had also entered service in Australia and Finland.

The 370 km is a great range for the purpose of self-defense. But Poland badly wanted strategic conventional first strike capability. With the JASSM-ER deal reached, its dream has come true. Using a more efficient engine and larger fuel volume in an airframe with the same external dimensions as the JASSM, the JASSM-ER has an operational range of 1000+km (620 mi) – an effective stealth weapon to knock out key stationary infrastructure sites located deep in Russia’s territory. The weapon boasts a penetrating warhead.

With the AGM-158A expected to become fully operational this year, Poland has the aircraft and crews ready to receive the extended range version. The JASSM-ER has 70% hardware commonality and 95% software commonality with the original AGM-158 JASSM.

Poland has made a significant contribution into NATO’s long-range conventional superiority to further complicate the prospects for further progress in the field of arms control. The first strike capability presupposes that Russia would introduce corresponding changes into its military planning. The home bases of Polish F-16 fighters carrying the JASSM-ER will inevitably become potential first strike targets in case of conflict with Russia.

The study of defense contracts signed recently by the United States with other countries shows that potential threats to Russia are growing. For instance, an A/N FPS-132 Block 5 Early Warning Radar (EWR) with an operational range of 5,000 km is to be installed in Qatar. Described as ordinary arms sales, the deals are kept out of arms control discourse and public spotlight but putting together bits of information allows to compose the whole picture and identify the creeping menaces.

It’s not air-to surface first strike capability only. Poland has been implementing the plans to form a 50,000 strong paramilitary territorial defense force, a planned military reserve component of the regular military, since 2015. Roughly, 20,000 guards will join the ranks of the new force in 2017.

Warsaw plans to increase the size of the army by at least 50 percent in the coming years (from about 95,000 to 150,000), including the creation of three brigades for the territorial defense of the country on the eastern flank.

The military is going through long-term modernization program with significant equipment acquisitions planned for 2017 through 2022 to involve new air defense systems, ballistic missiles, a new fighter trainer aircraft, combat and transport helicopters, submarines, self-propelled howitzers and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Around 1200 UAVs are to be procured, including at least 1000 with combat capabilities.

According to NATO plans, Poland will host rapid response troops starting this year. Warsaw has demanded a full-scale permanent base of the alliance on its territory.

A NATO Aegis Ashore ballistic missile defense site to be positioned in Poland in 2018 and the AGM-158B are two destabilizing factors that undermine security in Europe and obstruct prospects for arms control. Both threats to peace come from Poland.

There are reasons to believe that 2017 will be the year when tensions in the Old Continent are reduced. The Russian Foreign Ministry has just confirmed this view in a statement. The BMD and the AGM-158B are the issues to be raised if Russia and NATO launch arms control talks as some leading European nations have suggested recently. But Poland seems to be marching out of step. The JASSM-ER deal is a highly provocative step towards Russia undermining the security of Europe and positioning Poland at the frontline of the arms race.

Poland the biggest crazy whore there is.

Poland is a country which managed to simply disappear from the European map for more than 120 years (between 1795 and 1918) due to its own hubris and stupidity. That's always a detail worth remebering; cynical minds might link it to the infamous process of natural selection...

This is GOOD NEWS.  Poland no longer needs Nato.  She can defend herself.

Go ahead, polocks, attack russia.  All by your god-damned self.  I've got my popcorn supply.

Poland is a weird combo of arrogance not backed up by a lot of brains. Europe's borders should be restored to their pre-1918 state.

Its not that Poles are stupid, far from it, but I think Nassim Taleb had Poles in mind when he came up with the phrase "Intellectual Yet Idiot"

I always had a very high opinion of Poles until I actually met some and had to work with them... they seem to all be assholes and somehow know how to do exactly the WRONG thing when given a choice - and given more than one wrong choice, will pick the WORSE of the wrong choices...

Haus-Targaryen's picture

Ahhh, the age-old problem with the Polish.

Bigger that most of their neighbors, but not as big as Germany or Russia.

Thus, they can push around their smaller neighbors but when they try it with their bigger neighbors they get their ass handed to them be either Germany or Russia or both.

Play victim, wash, repeat.

Automatic Choke's picture

naw, it is all the misfortunes of geography. Poland is flat farmland. it has served history like a freeway onramp: an acceleration ramp for german tanks heading east, or an acceleration ramp for russian tanks heading west.

Haus-Targaryen's picture

True, but compare Romania and Poland's response to Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia in the 1930's

"Fuck you Germany, and fuck you Soviet Union.  We have our best friends the Americans and English ... you mess with us you mess with them."

Subsequently, get invaded by both sides (as neither could use the country as a staging area against the other) then get burned to the ground 3 times in the next 5 years and then sold into abject slavery for the next 5 decades by your allies you trusted so much you threw common sense and logic out the window.

"Well Mr. Hitler, we really think you are a piece of shit, but if the decision is to fight you or let you use us as a staging area, we'll what color do you want us to paint your apartment?"

Was more or less left alone by everyone, while both sides were sold out to the Soviets post-1945.

The difference is the Polish with millions dead and a completely destroyed country.

Had the Polish chosen a side in 1938 or so I imagine the war would have been much shorter and materially different, the country wouldn't have been completely destroyed and Poland would have some 60 million inhabitants in it today.

I saw Poland betrayed: An American ambassador reports to the American people (1948) is a book written by Arthur Bliss Lane, former United States ambassador to Poland, who observed what he considered to be the betrayal of Poland by the Western Allies at the end of World War II. A Polish version of the book was published in the United States, and later republished by an underground publishing house "Kr?g" in 1984 in Communist-dominated Poland.

Sandmann's picture

Romanian troops fought at Stalingrad. Do you know what the Romanian Iron Guard was. What do you know about Admiral Horthy in Hungary. Poland was no democracy in 1939 - it had been a Sanacja Dictatorship since 1935 banning Jews from University and putting opponents in labour camps

Ecclesia Militans's picture

So let me understand this: the Poles could have either (A) sided with a National Socialist Germany which had been provoking warfare in defense of German ethnic minorities (in the former eastern Prussia and the city of Gdansk/Danzig) which would have likely resulted in surrendering territory and ultimately soveriegnty under some ridiculous anschlus, or (B) sided with the communist Soviet Union who had just recently invaded (1920) in an attempt to push their revolution through to Germany, and been repulsed by the Poles with massive military and civilian casualties.

I would be very interested to hear how you propose the Poles should have navigated between these two aggressors to prevent the destruction they endured by 1945.

Haus-Targaryen's picture

You're asking me to speculate.

I have my biases, as it appears you do as well.  That is fine, we're both human beings.

What I can tell you is their choice of poking both of them because, the Americans have our back, was exceptionally stupid.

They lacked the ability to fight against either of them by themselves and were geographically isolated from their allies that could have protected them, this is simply a fact.

Chosing between National Socialism and Soviet Socialism is like deciding between the plague and HIV.  It would not have been an easy decision.  Their decision of doing nothing, however, resulted in 20% of the population being killed off, the entire country burned to the ground and sold off into slavery for 5 decades was likely the worst of the three possible choices.

BarkingCat's picture

And German decision to invade in 1939 resulted in Germany first getting destroyed in 1945 by Americans and Soviets, losing sovereignty since 1945 and then having been invaded by 3rd world rapefugees in 2016.

Who made the real dumb choice here???

A little history:

attacks against Germans living in Poland escalate, Hitler proposes that the region be placed under International control. Every German proposal is ignored. We now know that, behind the scenes, US President Roosevelt had been pressuring Poland to not make any deals with Germany

In 11th hour attempt to avert war, Hitler calls for emergency talks between Germany and Poland.
Just three days before the actual outbreak of what was to become World War II, Britain agrees to come to the Poland's assistance in the event of a conflict with Germany. (Anglo Polish Military Alliance) This unecessary deal emboldens the Polish and Jewish militias who want the West to wage war upon Germany. To force Hitler's hand, terrorists begin murdering German civilians in large numbers. A British ex-Pat named William Joyce describes the events:

"On the nights of August 25 to August 31 inclusive, there occurred, besides innumerable attacks on civilians of German blood, 44 perfectly authenticated acts of armed violence against German official persons and property. These incidents took place either on the border or inside German territory.

On the night of August 31, a band of Polish desperadoes actually occupied the German Broadcasting Station at Gleiwitz. Now it was clear that unless German troops marched at once, not a man, woman or child of German blood within the Polish territory could reasonably expect to avoid persecution and slaughter."
And yet, just prior to ordering the invasion of Poland (September 1, 1939), Hitler is still trying to resolve the situation peacefully by summoning the Polish Foreign Minister for talks. Unbeknown to Hitler, the fix was already in. After the 3 week German-Polish War ends in victory for the Germans, Hitler declares:
"I attempted to find a tolerable solution. I submitted this attempt to the Polish rulers. You know these proposals. They were more than moderate. I do not know what mental condition the Polish Government was in when it refused these proposals. As an answer, Poland gave the order for the first mobilization, and my request to the Polish Foreign Minister to visit me to discuss these questions was refused. Instead of going to Berlin, he went to London.”

In speech before  Reichstag, Hitler pleads with Britain & France to rescind recent war declarations.
Before the actual shooting was to start in the Western theatre, Hitler did all could to reassure Britian & France of his peaceful intentions. The two Allied powers had, under the pretext of saving Poland, both declared war upon Germany on September 3, 1939. Before the Reichstag, and the world, Hitler declares:"I have always expressed to France my desire to bury forever our ancient enmity and bring together these two nations, both of which have such glorious pasts. ....I have devoted no less effort to the achievement of Anglo-German understanding, no, more than that, of an Anglo-German friendship. At no time and in no place have I ever acted contrary to British interests..."Why should this war in the West be fought?"

MAY 1940
Hitler deliberately allows the British Army to escape at Dunkirk .
The German "blitzkrieg" across Holland and Belgium, as well as the earlier occupation of parts of Denmark and Norway, had denied the Allies of the opportunity to encircle Germany before invading it. As a show of good faith, and over the objectives of his own Generals, Hitler then allows the trapped Allied forces to escape untouched from the beaches of Dunkirk (France). Hitler hopes that this gracious act will make the British more willing to make peace. General Gunther von Blumentritt, in decribing the reasons behind Hitler's decison regarding Dunkirk, later explains:"He (Hitler) then astonished us by speaking with admiration of the British Empire, of the necessity for its existence, and of the civilization that Britain had brought into the world. ....He compared the British Empire with the Catholic Church ¬ saying they were both essential elements of stability in the world. He said that all he wanted from Britain was that she should acknowledge Germany's position on the Continent. The return of Germany's colonies would be desirable but not essential, and he would even offer to support Britain with troops if she should be involved in difficulties anywhere."
MAY 1940
After having defeated France and chasing the British invaders off of the continent, Hitler, via Swedish third party, proposes generous peace terms to Britian.

The Germans contact the British ambassador in Sweden, Victor Mallet, through Sweden´s Supreme Court Judge Ekeberg, who is known to Hitler´s legal advisor, Ludwig Weissauer.

According to Mallet:

"Hitler, according to his emissary [Weissauer], sincerely wishes friendship with England. He wishes peace to be restored, but the ground must be prepared for it: only after careful preparation may official negotiations begin. Until then the condition must be considered that discussions be unofficial and secret.
Hitler´s basic ideas [are that] today´s economic problems are different from those of the past [...] In order to achieve economic progress one must calculate on the basis of big territories and consider them an economic unit. Napoleon tried, but in his days it wasnt possible because France wasnt in the center of Europe and communications were too hard. Now Germany is in the center of Europe and has the necessary means to provide communication and transportation services.

kamsta1's picture

The whole Gleiwitz incident is well known false flag.

Actually when I read posts under this article I see a lot of old German-nazi propaganda still repeated and believed e.g. cavalry with sabres attacking tanks etc. Courage and honour of Polish people is called stupidity. They are even blamed for betrayal of France and UK which could easily prevent Hitler IIWW attrocities if they only made small effort to support Polish ally.

Regarding the article, surely rockets are offensive weapon but Territorial Defence Force is for defence. The same as National Guard in US. Poland is arming because Russia is again pushing to the west.

Remember when Polish soldiers rode on horseback with sabre in hand against German tanks and machine guns at start of the war? LOL those people can't be helped they are beyoned delusional

Haus-Targaryen's picture

To be fair ... this wasn't the Polish being stupid, this was the Polish going on a suicide mission to delay the advance so the Polish government could assemble their own troops.

The idea was (I read a diary written by a guy who was there) to ride up next to the tanks and climb on them and drop a hand-grenade in somehow.

It didn't work, but the guys that did it A) knew they were going to die and B) had balls of steel.

History looks back at this as "hahaha stupid Polacks" but the reality (as often the case is re; WWII) is materially different than what we are taught and/or believe.

Azannoth's picture

This might be more correct than you think because "suicide missions" are the main battle tactic of the Polish army.. and I am not even joking

squint's picture

I'm happy that you mentioned it as I heard of it as well. Will not see this on MSM.

The efforts of the Polish pilots in the Battle for Britain have been described with their unwavering focus upon sighting a German aircraft.  Some had more reservations though, as suicides have an unfavourable rating in the scriptures.

Sorry, but that's a myth. This is a little closer to being true:

The Polish military developed an effective antitank rifle in 8mm (7.92x107mm cartridge) which was captured and reverse engineered by Wermacht. Polish military did include cavalry units which didn't engage tanks.

The Poles were crazy brave, but not stupid, just vastly outnumbered.

Here's an article about a African invader bringing "Cultural Enrichment" to Poland --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Poland celebrates diversity: The terrible case of Simon Mol

BarkingCat's picture

It is an old story. I heard it over 10 years ago.

I have also heard it from Poles who live in Poland. The attitude of there was a complete and absolute lack of sympathy for the women.

Basically - the whores reserved it for fucking a monkey.

Moe Howard's picture

That women were actually convinced by Mol to engage in sex without a condom in order to avoid being accused of racism indicates that they were not only the victims of Simon Mol, but also of ideas which corrupted any semblance of common sense amongst them. If some women had not been corrupted by academia and the culture of political correctness to believe that they owed sexual gratification to Simon Mol on account of his skin colour and status as a member of an "oppressed" group, this tragedy - to date at least forty victims have been identified - would have been avoided.
