US Destroyer Fired Warning Shots At Four Iranian Vessels In Strait Of Hormuz

Tyler Durden's picture

In the latest dangerously close encounter between US and Iranian navies, Reuters reports that a U.S. Navy destroyer fired three warning shots at four of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps vessels on Sunday after they closed in at a high rate of speed in the Strait of Hormuz, according to two U.S. defense officials.

The Reuters sources said that the USS Mahan established radio communication with the boats but they did not respond to requests to slow down.

The USS Mahan

The Navy destroyer fired warning flares and a U.S. Navy helicopter also dropped a smoke float.

The Iranian vessels came within 900 yards (800 meters) of the Mahan, which was escorting two other U.S. ships.

The last such encounter in which a US navy ship fired warning shots at Iranian vessels took place last August, when the USS Nitze fired three warning shots after a "harassing" Iranian fast-attack craft approached and circled two U.S. Navy ships and a Kuwaiti vessel in the northern Gulf. The U.S. ship fired the shots into the water after the Iranian ship did not leave after a brief radio conversation.

The Iranian vessels had moved at high speed toward the Nitze, which allegedly was operating in accordance with international law in international waters and ignored maritime "rules of the road" as set out in the 1972 Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. According to the Navy official, the IRGC vessels ignored multiple warnings, creating a dangerous, harassing environment that could have pushed the Nitze to take defensive measures, escalating the situation. At the time, Iran's defense minister insinuated that the incident occurred inside Iranian territory.

“Naturally these boats constantly monitor the developments and foreign vessels’ movements and naturally this happens in the waters of our own country. If any foreign vessel enters our waters, we will give them a warning and if it is an act of aggression, we will confront them,” he said.

It is unclear if today's incident took place in international waters.

As a reminder, there are temporarily no US aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf region at this moment, or anywhere else around the world for that matter.

Russia has done “virtually zero” in the fight against Islamic State terrorists in Syria the US Secretary of Defense has claimed, contending that the US and its coalition partners are carrying this burden “by themselves.” https://www.rt.com/usa/373014-russia-zero-isis-syria-carter/

They are right. They have done almost virtually zero to help the american allies ISIL.

So the Americans have had to do that themselves.

And now the Americans have had so the hat fits!

Good for them.

Exactly. Just like large countries that happen to be located next to NATO bases which pose no threat. Just their mere existence poses a threat.

That will teach the Iranians not to approach the US coast with their massive threatening naval vessels. /sarc

Seriously, I guess the Navy was feeling in need of some attention, that normally goes to the air force and SF boyz. Snowflakes one and all.

Unfortunately Trump seems to be all aboard the War On Iran train.  Somebody needs to remind him that Obama's fulfi8llment of Zbigniew Brzezinski's "Chessboard" strategy has pushed Iran into alliance with Russia and China.

The US Military, sensing a temporary vacuum in actual oversight/direction, are likely taking advantage of the situation and pushing their agenda as hard and as quickly as they can: i.e. start a hot war (err, conflict).  And is it a coincidence that they've removed those floating targets (aka aircraft carriers) from the battle field, just in case things should go hot?  Those targets would be too easy to take out (asymetrically by a couple of supersonic missiles) and the resulting loss would be very damaging to the US morale right when its needed most.

this blog used to be a place where (imho slightly bewildered) but pacifistic libertarians discussed the problems with statism, keynesianism, etc.

then... it became a stomping ground for snowflakes in jackboots

nobody here to explain to this guy that shooting on somebody else's warships is an act of war? that he is a shrill warmonger, plain and pure?

wake up, guys. you have been had... again

No question we have been had, but it hasnt been by Trump at least as of yet.

There will be a war over jobs (with China and Mexico), potentially to recover ground that the globalists surrendered.

Then there is the war with Islam, which may have already been lost.

Your President Mr Obozo, and your Leader Ms Merkel how are they doing on those two fronts

The Iranians have done nothing to me - they even helped in defeating those (CIA) ISIS and Al Queda nutjobs in Syria with the Russians.

I'm also pretty certain they haven't forgotten about the turmoil we caused throughout the 20th century with coup d'etats in their country and I doubt they've forgotten about USS Vincennes, which in 1988 at almost the same place as this incident on Sunday, shot down flight 655, an Iranian Airbus on July 3, killing all 290 passengers and crew from six nations including 66 children.

poeg's picture

Do most Americans even know they had an elected government and the CIA killed him to put their SHAW in place?

I worked with several Persians who told me at the time that shooting down that plane was the first time they got to really respect the US. THe Iranians had been viewing the US presence as a joke, which is why the plane was following an attack approach on the ship, to toy with it. Too bad the commander was sacked. The next time some country buzzes one of our ships I hope they turn the fire control radar on and lock onto them and watch them break away in a nanosecond. When Reagan had our planes cross the "Line of Death" and the Lybian planes made threatening moves against them they got blown out of the air, and everyone knew why.

YHC-FTSE's picture

Bullshit, bullshit. After all these years, the lies just keep on clinging around the toilet bowl

I went through this incident years ago. The pilot of the civilian Airbus did not deviate from the usual air corridor, he had the correct civilan transponder on to identify the aircraft as civilian and USS Vincennes was in Iranian waters at the moment its missile was launched. I checked and double checked all the facts.

The commander of USS Vincennes, William C. Rogers III, got a fucking medal after shooting down the airliner at the end of his tour, "In 1990, Capt. Rogers was awarded the Legion of Merit decoration "for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as commanding officer"

musimann's picture

Its OK when the US commits acts of terror cause we're special. A sidenote of that incident is that Iran got even when they put a bomb on the Pam Am 103 flight over Lockerbie. The US blamed that on Ghadaffi but he did not do it. Scottish police admitted they were bribed by the CIA to find the trigger that was the only real (fake) evidence tying it to Libya. He had a court case in the works to overturn the decision. Probably the real reason the US destroyed Ghadaffi. Typical US bullshit. Apparently they were using these flights to smuggle drugs which came raining down over Scotland. The bomb was in the drugs.

not dead yet's picture

There were two pieces of evidence. The other was a shirt that the timer was found in, all well away from from the debris field. They got a shopkeeper from Malta to identify a Libyan intelligence official who supposedly bought a similar shirt in his shop long before the bombing. The same shopkeeper did not recognize the official when he was shown his picture days before the trial but could when on the stand. They could not prove the timer came from Libya but said it was one they had access too. Years later it was admitted that Libya had no such access to this type of timer. It was a 2 judge kangaroo court where the guy who set up the trial and proceedings couldn't believe anyone could be convicted on such flimsy evidence. According to retired FBI agents the FBI knew it was Iran as revenge for their airliner being shot down. An Iranian intelligence defector confirmed it was Iran. At the time the US needed Syria for something and they wouldn't get it if they accused Iran so the fix was in. Libya was the west's favorite whipping boy and the long running anti Libya propaganda made it easy to blame them and Qaddafi in particular. Qaddafi agreed to pay reparations to get relief from drastic US sanctions that were imposed to perpetuate the myth Libya did it. Libya did not admit any guilt but only "took responsibility for the actions of it's officials."

When the so called bomber was released in the late 2000's it was claimed for humanitarian reasons as he had fatal prostate cancer which was true. When he didn't die right away the conspiracy nuts claimed the Brits let him out to seal an oil deal between Libya and BP. The real reason was he petitioned for a new trial and there was no way the convicition would hold especially with new scrutiny from the press and the cancer gave them an easy out. As with most fatal prostate cases one can linger for years before dying which this guy did.

Hillary in her emails urged Obomber to wage war with Libya as a means to send a message to Assad of Syria to step down. Libya would be easy to crack but not Syria in a shooting war. When Assad didn't they unleashed the dogs of war upon Syria. Libya was a sideshow with Syria being the real target. There were other reasons to get rid of Qaddafi as he was heading up Africa for Africans and using the gold dinar as the currency for all of Africa along with 3 major banks to manage all African affairs. Qaddafi's Libyan development fund invested and lent money all over Africa and was a danger to the IMF and World Bank control of African countries finances and economies. Years earlier rather than pay Europe $500 million per year for use of their communication satelittes Qaddafi poneyed up $300 million of the $400 million needed for Africa to get their own. Qaddafi, along with "evil" Syria, were great partners with the US in the war on terror. There was more to the US removal of Qaddafi than the fake news mainstream press let on parroting the Obama line of bullshit. Some claimed we were after Qaddafi's gold and his cash but after the war the Libyan opposition which took power claimed the gold was still there and the banks cock full of money. So much for the claim of others that Qaddafi stole all of Libya's money and gold. Money which they have been living off of the last 5 years as war and infighting has taken a drastic toll on oil exports.

There is a residual belligerent hubris still in many people in the US. It used to be predominant within the Neocon wing of both parties. Obama is just a neocon in nobel peace prize trappings. Bomb bomb bomb Iran. The McCain sickness still prevails. There are 2 problems that I see here. One is that the US does not have the right to go around bombing and destroying countries. They have the power but they do not have the right. Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria are all examples of this failed policy. Bush/Cheney never attacked Iran (openly) and there is a very good reason for this. A little wisdom goes a long way. I have not read an analysis that says a war with Iran will go well for us. I don't think it will. That is the second problem. Iran is just sitting there waiting for us to attack. Sure we might get some shots in but all they have to do is hit a couple of ships and down they go. They have some very powerful antiship weapons. They can also hit every US base in the ME including Khazaristan. They also have defensive arrangements with Russia and China. So you think that is smart? Obama wants to provoke a war and some dumb neocon thinks its a good idea. Not so bright IMO.

Agreed.  Just look at a map and ponder all the area they control around the Persian Gulf & the Gulf of Oman, plus how narrow the Straights of Hormuz.  The world's oil supply could go up in smoke in a heartbeat if things got really hot there.  It is called the "Persian" Gulf for a reason, not the Arab Gulf.

Also note their proximity to all the other hot spots - Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Iraq, and right up against the underbelly of Russia, yet we sail around like it is the Gulf of Mexico instead of the Persian Gulf.

Actually Obama was given the peace prize as an incentive to deliver the leverage of the US in the Copenhagan climate summit to get a deal for screwing over the people of the planet and helping to usher in a world government. Opps, despite Obama's efforts the whole thing was a flop. Since that time many on the Nobel committee have expressed their regrets at giving Obama the peace prize and wished they could take it back.

fredquimby's picture

They didn't shoot, they popped a coupla flares.

Remember the USA lost last time Iran and the US came together in Hormuz. The Iranians (probably) diabled the US attack craft electronically, boarded them and stripped the sailors of their weapons and dignity. I am sure some folks are still smarting over that one.

Agree with the quality of posters recently though.

Do you have any idea where the Strait of Hormuz is shitbag?

Shake your'e fucking head, you sound like a retard!

Edit: It's like 30 miles wide. Could you imagine an Iranian vessel firing warning shot on a US vessel 30 miles of the coast of NY? The Iranian ship would be sunk and nobody would give a shit.

lakecity55's picture

Why? We're in their near waters. If they were shooting at our boats off the coast of Miami, now that would be different.

But, IF we are not acting provocatively, they have to leave our stuffs alone. As we should leave their stuffs alone.

I don't really blame some Iranian captain to a point, though. Compared to Iran, the US has a lot of weapons. Of course, Iran now has some deadly stuff, but they know we can mess them up. I don't blame them for wanting to demonstrate they are not afraid to defend their turf. It would be better if they just shot past in fast boats and mooned the US ship, though.
