FBI Reportedly Sought FISA Court Warrant To Spy On Trump Campaign Officials

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Jason Ditz via AntiWar.com,

A new report released today features both the FBI seeking to launch a surveillance operation against an active US presidential campaign, and the ultra-rare case of the FISA courts actually turning down an FBI request to conduct surveillance against somebody.

The report, originating at the Guardian, claims that the FBI had sought broad surveillance powers over four high-ranking members of President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign during the election, claiming them to have had contact with Russian officials.

The FISA court turned the request down, telling investigators they needed to narrow the request.

Though the four are not directly named in the report, it is related to claims in a dossier of Russia having substantial blackmail dirt on Trump, and that dossier centered heavily around accusations against a handful of Trump campaign personnel, including Carter Page, Paul Manafort, and Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, along with Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen, meaning some of them may well be among the targets.

Secondary reports speculated that the FBI may well have sought a more narrow application for surveillance, though details on that are even less clear than the previous reports.

Though a lot of these reports don’t end up substantiated, if true this could well add to the expected acrimony between the incoming administration and the intelligence community.

And..... The man ain't even in office yet!

The hits keep on coming, don't they?

When the FISA court turns you down, you officially have zero credibility.

The Swamp is deep and wide.

Creative_Destruct's picture

Holy shit these Deep State bastards are certainly vile if this proves true. And  Mr. Integrity would be a bigger scumbag than even I surmised.

And if you can't get a FISA rubber stamp there must have been less than ZERO probable cause.

This story smells a little like low tide under the pier. Part of the orchestrated pre-inauguation smear.

Team Trump should rip the head, shoulders and tits off of the faux intel viper pit...WHEN THEY ARE GOOD AND READY.

Let's remember strategy, and how to win the President show bigly.

Trump and Co. has a plan.  An important part of the plan is to set aside the military/defense/intel segment for now.  This is vey key.  They need to FOCUS on BIG and EARLY WINS.

In my opinion, but based on a lot of reading and analysis, the PRIMARY TARGET is NOT defense/intel/Military-Industrial Complex.

The MAIN, FIRST and PRIMARY TARGET is.....Obamacare, health and Big Pharma.

If Trump busts some balls there, and gets cost reductions and/or massive humiliation for the insurance and drug companies....he is GOLDEN with the PUBLIC and HAS EVERYTHING ELSE LOCKED IN.

So, this is a semi-brilliant distraction, aimed at FORCING the intel Idiots to be a real and  pressing problem rather than something to be popped like a pimple in a routine manner in a year or two (exactly the same as the treatment of banking/finance).

So....Donald....if you're out there.....

Thanks for being a sober germophobe.  That alone may be the saving grace for our entire so-called civilization.

Peace and may God bless our fair Republic.

I wish everyone would stop clicking over to CNN or tuning into then FOR ANY REASON! It's really not that hard to do.

Vote up if you either have banned CNN or can make an oath to do so now.

And when the FISA turns you down, you go do it anyway and try real hard not to get caught. Sure hope the FBI doesn't have any rougues who spill the beans that they went around the FISA denial.

chunga's picture

Yeah, the gumshoes at FBI asking this FISA outfit for permission is hard to believe.

Have you seen Clapper's statement...I wonder how he likes the taste of Crow...

DNI Clapper Statement on Conversation with President-elect Trump This evening, I had the opportunity to speak with President-elect Donald Trump to discuss recent media reports about our briefing last Friday. I expressed my profound dismay at the leaks that have been appearing in the press, and we both agreed that they are extremely corrosive and damaging to our national security. We also discussed the private security company document, which was widely circulated in recent months among the media, members of Congress and Congressional staff even before the IC became aware of it. I emphasized that this document is not a U.S. Intelligence Community product and that I do not believe the leaks came from within the IC. The IC has not made any judgment that the information in this document is reliable, and we did not rely upon it in any way for our conclusions. However, part of our obligation is to ensure that policymakers are provided with the fullest possible picture of any matters that might affect national security. President-elect Trump again affirmed his appreciation for all the men and women serving in the Intelligence Community, and I assured him that the IC stands ready to serve his Administration and the American people.    James R. Clapper, Director of National Intelligence

Why is this asshole, and admitted perjurer and subverter of constitutional authority, not in prison? Much less briefing Trump?

Beats the hell outta me. Why is he not twitching at the end of a rope?

rex-lacrymarum's picture

They have dossiers - real ones - on everybody who is somebody. And in some of those, there is information that can destroy people utterly. Does no-one remember J. Edgar Hoover? So all you need to do is look who on the various Congressional committees that are responsible for "oversight" and others in high politicial positions are the most vociferous defenders of these structures and their representatives, and you will know whose dossiers probably contain some really juicy stuff.

Funny enough, they don't seem to have much on Trump - my guess is that we have already seen everything that was real. Something would have leaked before the election in his case, and it seems the most damaging thing they had was the "locker room" tape. Didn't work, in spite of the excellent timing of the release.

Creative_Destruct's picture

" I expressed my profound dismay at the leaks that have been appearing in the press"

I'm sure DNI Clapper took this script from Deep Throat (#2 at FBI) who probably said the same thing to Nixon at a cocktail party while he was secretly supplying Woodward and Berstein with a truckload of daggers.

NoPension's picture

And CNN is crowing this backs up their reporting.

I've NEVER seen a FUCKING twat reporter badger a US President or President-Elect like I saw today.
This will cost CNN.

Fuck CNN. And ALL their piss ant talking heads. Especially Don Lemonhead. And that bug eyed Fareed sandnigger.

NoPension's picture

And dear god, where did they find this ASSHOLE Richard Painter yapping about Trump's ethics.
This guy looks and sounds retarded.

CNN is definitely doubling down on stupid. They won't learn until they are crushed.
It's painfully obvious they LOATHE Donald Trump.

Fuck CNN

boattrash's picture

You got that right! I must say though, I haven't seen anybody handle the bastard like Trump did, since Truman nailed one for criticizing his daughter's piano playing.

Seems like a coup is still afoot, wonder who's winning?

You are a sad motherfucker when you can't make it through the FISA court. I'd hate to be the asshole who applied for that warrant next week.

VladLenin's picture

So, true. A monkey can usually get a FISA warrant.

Sounds like the AG/Clinton plane accidental meeting had two fronts. Qwell Hillary investigations and start some on Trump.   A coup in the making... arm up.

neilhorn's picture

All he needs to do is to say, "You're Fired". Take out the whole lot of them. Get some men and women in those intelligence jobs who are actually intelligent, patriotic, freedom loving Americans. Why can't Jan 20 get here sooner?

LetThemEatRand's picture

Losing a request for a warrant in a FISA court is like offering a $20 hooker a grand to show you her tits and her telling you "not today."

NoDebt's picture

Which is why I know this entore story is complete and total horseshit.

LetThemEatRand's picture

Yes, the whole point is to have the headline that they tried to get a warrant.  Most people will accept that as true even though it obviously isn't.

Son of Loki's picture

What's her name on Fox said she never heard them turning down a request so it must have been ludicrously frivolous.

AlaricBalth's picture

Since 1979 through to 2015, the last round of reporting figures, the FISA court has approved 38,365 warrants but only rejected a dozen. That's a rejection rate of 0.031 percent.

The Fonz only jumped the shark once. The desperate status quo elite seem to be jumping a bigger shark as each day goes by. 9 days to go. How crazed are they going to be with 48 - 72 hours before inauguration?

aardvarkk's picture

Yeah, but the Fonz was still cool even after jumping the shark.  These tools were never cool to begin with.

TwelveOhOne's picture

FYI, when ZH farts and causes a double-post, it's probably better to mark the second post as the dupe.  I've seen where someone else replied to (or voted) the first one, but then it was changed to "." or "dupe" and thus the discussion didn't flow right.

Urban Redneck's picture

If only Nixon had been running for reelection six years later, he could have avoided the whole Watergate thing with a FISA warrant.

LetThemEatRand's picture

It's one of the oldest tricks in the book for crooked law enforcement.  You go to a judge with a request for some kind of relief, be it a warrant or whatever.   The judge denies it because there is no basis for a warrant, but the press runs the story that law enforcement went to the judge to get a warrant against you to prove criminal wrongdoing.  Most people assume there was a reason, other than corruption of law enforcement.

Oldwood's picture

Not one of these "Trumped" up accusations has proven out yet the still persist. Do you still think it's all a bunch of crybabies?

I expect this shit every day (and twice on Sunday) until the 20th, and I expect to see other collateral damage accruing as well, like falling markets. Everything is intended as a signal to the minions, those willing to get their hands dirty without direct orders. (some with)

And as we see, it's not just the democrats doing this. Shit shills like McCain, Graham and RUBIO are adding fuel to the fire, implying Trump is a threat to national security. If I could have reached into the screen today, I would have strangled Rubio.

They are getting things revved up.

I have close friends attending the inauguration and I am truly concerned for their safety. You couldn't pay me to be in DC next week.

I am a Man I am Forty's picture

Hell to the fuck no, I would be worried about flying bullets from the alphabet agencies.

neilhorn's picture

No worries. My bullets also fly. Boomer Sooner.

Ditto. Screw these dirtbags. >>>> If I could have reached into the screen today, I would have strangled Rubio.

Calmyourself's picture

Building street cred.. Can't wait to watch it spent.

TheLastTrump's picture

Great point.

What's bothering me is the lengths they went to over the last couple years to win in 2016. What will they NOT do in 2020?

Creative_Destruct's picture

"...the whole point is to have the headline that they tried to get a warrant."

Bingo. The pre-inauguration smear campaign releases continue as scheduled....

TwelveOhOne's picture

Like the apology to Assange: "Sorry we called you a pedophile, pervert!"  I hope he takes them to court, as they didn't air an hour special (AFAIK).
