If You Think "Fake News" Is A New Phenomenon, You're Wrong

Submitted by Mnar Muhawesh via TheAntiMedia.org,

The “fog of war” erupts in the confusion caused by the chaos of war. And in the media, it’s an intentional phenomenon that makes it difficult to separate fact from fiction.

While the battles over war narratives evolve, they all have a common goal: to distort reality on the ground.

Such is the case on the crisis in Syria, the new cold war with Russia, and even the buildup for President Bush’s support for Kuwait’s “humanitarian” war against Iraq.

On Oct. 10, 1990, a 15-year-old Kuwaiti girl identified only as “Nayirah” told the Congressional Human Rights Caucus that she witnessed Iraqi soldiers removing babies from incubators and leaving them on a cold floor to die.

Her testimony was cited numerous times by senators and even President George H.W. Bush as  justification for backing Kuwait in the Gulf War against Saddam Hussein, which erupted just three months later.

However, it was later revealed that “Nayirah” was the daughter of Kuwait’s ambassador to the United States, and her testimony was arranged by a PR firm representing a Kuwaiti-sponsored group lobbying Congress for military intervention.

More recently, during the “Arab Spring” uprisings that swept the Middle East in 2011, Libyan media claimed that Moammar Gadhafi loyalists carried out mass “Viagra-fueled rapes,” and that the Libyan leader had ordered rape as a weapon of war. When Luis Moreno-Ocampo, a prosecutor with the International Criminal Court, opened an investigation into these allegations, it grabbed international headlines, appearing in Al-Jazeera, the BBC, and Reuters, among many others.

Even as Amnesty International questioned the legitimacy of the allegations, other supposedly humanitarian groups hit a loggerhead on the veracity of the claims. One top U.N. official said he believed the claims were meant as a scare tactic to invoke “massive hysteria even as another top U.N. official defended them, creating a distraction from the war itself.

And today the fog of war is obscuring realities on the ground in Syria.

Major news outlets frequently cite unnamed sources, a convenient way to manipulate public perception. From CNN to Reuters, these outlets are publishing unverifiable claims and providing minimal evidence to support them, and readers are supposed to drink it all up

The crisis in Syria has attracted international attention and concern, and the corporate media is using the tragedies of war to push an agenda and boost its audience. This push for content — no matter what — has serious consequences. On Dec. 20, for example, Egyptian police arrested five people for making videos they claimed were set in Aleppo, but were actually filmed at a demolition site.

Social media further distorts reality on the ground, presenting a fragmented image of war as the media promotes only those accounts that align with the goals of the United States and its allies.

The media and public both accept the accounts of the White Helmets as gospel. Yet that group, which purports to serve as volunteer first responders in Aleppo, receives training from British mercenaries and funding from a PR firm with ties to George Soros.

Not only are the White Helmets making fake videos, but they’ve even been exposed as agents embedded in the Nusra Front and ISIS.. Armed and far from impartial, the White Helmets are a recipient of millions in USAID funding.

Whether the White Helmets are the apolitical first responders they claim to be or not, one thing is clear: The narrative being weaved by and about them supports U.S. intervention in the war in Syria.

The narrative is built around activists frequently cited by the media, like Bilal Abdul Kareem, who is embedded with the Nusra Front and recently glorified suicide bombers as revolutionaries.

Or Lina Shamy, the young Syrian activist who promotes sectarian terrorists from Jaysh al-Sham, who threaten genocide against religious minorities as revolutionaries.

It’s time to put a critical lens to the propaganda in the news and social media. It’s time to demand more than reporting that toes the government line and makes claims without real evidence.

Yes I think that is very prescient and I have been thinking the same myself recently. The reality is that, the "Fake News" (That being the MSM) no longer has a monopoly on "information" and there is more real information available. Other than MSM which in the "Western Democracies" has always been mostly propoganda.

BTW, sorry I am a preserver and defender of the English language and that should be "phenomenon" (singular) not "phenomena" (pleural).

It really does not matter to me personally much now , but I do GAF about how the future is going to be for the kids.

If I could wish them anything, it would be to have some of the simple things that were instrumental as I grew up…

Complexity is going to happen… do not rush it .

And if I see an adult putting  VR gear on a pre-teen, I might be tempted to beat the F out of him/her..

“Hold on to sixteen as long as you can..

Changes come around real soon make us women and men”

You know, that is an interesting concept.

Within a few hundred feet of my house lives at least three “children”: with mom (the dads are dead)

They age 58, 55 and 22

..maybe we are reverting to tribal.

The government has been eliminating the need to be women or men…

Husbands and wives…

Boys and girls…

Anything of morality and virtue at all.

Thank you  lib/tards.

It is hard to understand those who trust the blatant manipulation offered in replacement of news.

I get bias. I understand slant &/or perspective. But there's blatant misleading and misrepresentation in the mainstream media, not to mention a dearth of coverage on important stories.

Perhaps most of the people who inhabit the "Western Liberal Democarcies" have been so "Dumbed down" that they are too stupid to see what is going on? That is exactly what I was trying to say. And that is precisely what was intended by the "elites".

I was so disgusted at what was being  presented as 'News" that I quit watching TV altogether about years ago.

Now I spend my nights digging for worldwide 'News'  Taking the slants and biases and matching them together in the hope I may find a sliver of truth.

Locally, I watch 'reporters' totally fuck up events, or put trivial shit, Kardastion losses her ass, as headlines.

Let me tell you how news is created.

Once, long ago, in a two-bit town in Florida, I was a radio DJ.  At various exact times, we'd kill the music and le tthe AP Satellite provided "News" go for two to five minutes, all precisely timed.  As far as anyone not in the biz could tell, we had a reporter and we played records.  We had an AP teletype that would print various stories as they came over the wire (complete with phonetic spellings for Names).

As stories were printed there would be a ding.   Goobermint would typically get two dings.  Something important, like Mt St. Helens erupting, got three dings.

So I'm in the booth, airing the music via satellite from Chigago, with carts lined up for various breaks and commercials.

Suddenly the teletype went into hyperdrive.  I can hear it rattling away even in the booth.  Suddenly it popped out with ten dings.  Horrified, expecting nuclear war, or that Reagan had died...I ran to the teletype and peeled the pages from the middle of the pile.

I went back tothe booth, interrupted the music and read the teletype...

Ladies and gentlemen, this just in.  Marvin Gaye has just been shot and killed by his own father.  (Seems around 83-84.)

The priorities are so bafflingly misplaced.  Always has, always will be.

news consist in facts and opinions

bias is a spin of opinion. the very best reporter, even back 200 years ago, always carefully separated the reported fact from the reporter's opinion

meanwhile, see the parable of the elephant and the three blind village elders. every and each one of them is confronted with one fact, be it the elephant's trunk, foot or tail. every and each one of them reports correctly on that one fact, but can't make the connection to the whole elephant. literally, he does not see the elephant

enter disdain for facts. enter the dark side of populism, anti-intellectualism, anti-elitism, "anti-expertism"

whoever enters that... exits "news" in the orthodox way of understanding them

then, it's all about what feels right. in the belly

if you want to listen very carefully to your belly, you just have to switch off what your mind or your heart tries to tell you, i.e. disregard facts and disregard any kind of gentle opinion

... you don't need to see the elephant, do you? it can be whatever feels right, after all

at that point, you have a demand for "facts" that fit your feelings, that feel right

they are more... comfortable. they feel better

If it weren't for Zero Hedge and Matt Drudge the Wikileaks revelations of the DNC Clinton campaign corruption would have been swept under the rug by the MSM.

They are the main source for actual news.

That said, none of that factored into my opinion of voting for Hillary Clinton.
The Clintons have been engaged in criminal activity for over 25 years.

To Sell a War (1992) https://youtu.be/yaR1YBR5g6U

To Sell A War is a documentary film, first aired in December 1992 as part of CBC programme the fifth estate. The programme was directed and produced by Neil Docherty.

It chronicles the Citizens for a Free Kuwait campaign efforts to spin public relations sentiment in the United States in favor of the Gulf War, focusing on the story of Nurse Nayirah, who was, in fact, Nayirah al-Sabah, the daughter of Kuwait's ambassador to the United States Saud Nasir Al-Sabah. Her infamous testimony about Iraqi soldiers removing babies from incubators, which was widely disseminated, was a result of coaching by PR firm Hill & Knowlton.

This is why the US dollar will always be the worlds reserve currency. It is how the worldwide war machine steals the worlds wealth. The propaganda media starts with the tragic sob story about women and children, bombs and rape and we must put a stop to it. The target is always a shithole that looks like it has already been bombed anyway. The propaganda heats up and we are all fed the narrative that the humanitarian crisis must end and we are going to end it with heavy artillary. Ironically, it is always the lives of young American men and woman who are sacrificed first at the alter and it is the American taxpayer and middle class that is first fleeced by the scam. Our politicians, paid off by the war machine push the narrative, the media sets it up as the American people want to go to war when in reality, we could give a shit less about the entire shithole in the Middle East. The irony is that we are then used as the worlds scapegoat as redneck American Flag waving warmongers who think we have the right to push our views on everyone else. The rich get richer, politicians get richer, regular folks die, poor folks die, women and children are bombed and the taxpayer is fleeced. I would not be surprised that the war footage we are fed is made up propaganda as well. Everything is a lie and a scam.

Fake News is NOT the problem, the problem is people keep finding out it's Fake News !

On the other hand if it's about Satanism, Judaism, Pedophiles, Incest, Zionism, NeoCons, Stones Masons, Free Masons, Bilderberg, Bohemian Grove, Skull & Bones, New World Order then it is Real News and calling it Fake News is Fake Fake News.

We don't need censorship by the government. All we need are constant reminders of the facts about information gathering. All licensed media outlets should be forced to post this disclaimer both at the beginning and end of their reports.

Obama Birther stories...more Sidney Blumenthal stories, as described here:

Almost every day over the past six months, I have been the recipient of an email that attacks Obama's character, political views, electability, and real or manufactured associations. The original source of many of these hit pieces are virulent and sometimes extreme right-wing websites, bloggers, and publications. But they aren't being emailed out from some fringe right-wing group that somehow managed to get my email address. Instead, it is Sidney Blumenthal who, on a regular basis, methodically dispatches these email mudballs to an influential list of opinion shapers — including journalists, former Clinton administration officials, academics, policy entrepreneurs, and think tankers — in what is an obvious attempt to create an echo chamber that reverberates among talk shows, columnists, and Democratic Party funders and activists.http://www.weeklystandard.com/report-clinton-confidant-sidney-blumenthal...

The crazy golden showers/Russian prostitutes on Obama's bed...sounds like Sidney to me. Same writing style, same M.O.

How about when the government colludes with the MSM to create its own fake news?

The Obama State Department and the MSM regularly quoted the "UK Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights." This so-called organization is not an organization at all, but "one old man" in his dingy 2 bedroom home in Coventry, UK. This fucking guy claims to know what’s really going on in Syria. He is a Muslim Syrian immigrant that talks on the phone with terrorists back home in Syria, our pals the "Al Nusra Front". Actually this is a neocon propaganda mill for the CIA. It’s comments, suggestions and conclusions are solely based upon an official false narrative (fake news) created by the CIA, passed onto the MSM and sold to us sheeple through the fake news outlets of the MSM.

Watch this video put out by RT that tells us the story. Of course we are not supposed to be watching RT according to that old fucking Russophobe neocon McCain!!
