Obama Issued A Massive Ammunition Ban Just One Day Before He Left Office

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mac Slavo via SHTFPlan.com,

In early December SHTFplan contributor Jeremiah Johnson warned the inauguration was still a long way off and that we should never underestimate a Marxist with an army of oligarchs to lean on. It turns out that Johnson’s warnings were right on target, as we have learned over the last couple of weeks that President Obama and officials in his administration moved feverishly to implement new rules and regulations with last minute initiatives.

One such regulation, which seemingly disappeared within the hustle and bustle of inauguration day, was a new order issued by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe just 12 hours before our new President was sworn into office.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe, an Obama appointee, ordered a new ammunition ban for certain federal lands on Thursday–his last full day in office.

The ban, which took effect immediately, eliminates the use of lead-based ammunition on federal lands like national parks and wildlife refuges, as well as any other land administered by the Fish and Wildlife Service. The ban is expected to have a major impact on much of the hunting that takes place on federal lands across the United States as lead-based ammunition is widely legal and used throughout the country.

Ashe said the order was necessary to protect wildlife from exposure to lead.

That may seem like a big win for the anti-gun left, but The National Shooting Sports Foundation has already leapt into action:

“This directive is irresponsible and driven not out of sound science but unchecked politics,” said Lawrence Keane, the group’s senior vice president.

The timing alone is suspect. This directive was published without dialogue with industry, sportsmen, and conservationists. The next director should immediately rescind this and, instead, create policy based upon scientific evidence of population impacts with regard to the use of traditional ammunition.”

As we noted earlier, President Trump has a lot of work to do to reverse the damage caused by the Obama administration.

Reversing this asinine ammunition ban is a good start.

Trump might as well issue a executive order to all executive branches /departments. "all orders and directives given from Nov 15th through Jan 20th 11:59am are null, void and to be ignored. Any enforcement of those directives / orders will be considered insubordination"

El Vaquero's picture

The ban is specifically for lead ammo on Fish and Wildlife Services administered lands.  It sounds like it applies to rifle ammo as well as shotgun ammo, which is retarded.  Flinging 2oz of lead into a bird that might fly off if not killed and get eaten by a raptor is a far cry from putting a 150gr 30 cal slug into a deer, even if the deer does run off.  The raptor's digestive tract is much more caustic than our own, and it doesn't take much lead to kill one.  I know this because I rode from San Marcial, NM to Corrales, NM with a Golden Eagle on my lap that died from lead poisoning the next day.

But it is already illegal to hunt waterfowl with lead shot, and a lot of the hunting on these places is going to be waterfowl hunting.

I expose wildlife to lead shortly before it goes in the freezer and it does not seem to have ANY negative effects. ;-)

chiquita's picture

I'm sure you're being sarcastic, but I hope if you are using lead shot, you're cleaning it out because of your own exposure to it.  You would not be eating lead-based paint chips would you?

As to the ban on using lead ammo on wildlife, not so sure it's that bad a thing if it can be avoided.  Definitely shotgun pellets for sure, although not so much rifle ammo--that seems a bit odd.  It is proven that birds will eat the lead shot, mistaking it for gravel, which they need to help in digestive processes.  I doubt if any birds mistake rifle sized ammo as such.  However, long term lead exposure is a hazard to bird populations and anything that feeds on them.  There are alternative shotgun pellets that don't cause the kind of painful death that lead poisoning causes in wildlife.

Regardless of the dubious ecological benefits of the one side this, fuck Obama for how he did this.  The Audubon Society has been begging for the ban on lead shot for years.  The ONLY good thing about it is Obama pushed this through at the 11th hour rather than pardoning the Clintons...

it is always the thin edge of the wedge..... to save the _ _ _ _ _ choice of the day, then it grows like a virus and eventually reaches your door and you finally get pissed off. Too late, the virus is bigger than you and has enablers demanding more regulation. These enablers also known as cannibals feeding off everyone else 'cause everything is a cause and being productive is being destructive.

Dig deeper who wrote this and who financed it? Surface logic is Hollywood (tax deductible).

No, no, you need to walk up to the cave entrance ( and before you do this, I recommend that you eat a lot of kidney beans, lima beans, okra, bacon, prunes, bananas, peperoni, lasagna, salami, sausage, onions (preferrably carmalized and raw), oysters, fried chicken ( preferrably from KFC), swiss chees, cheddar cheese, linberger cheese, garlic, wasabe sauce, soy sauce, hot sauce (the kind Hillary carries with her in her purse), any and all food products from Kraft, any processed food products from Cargill and lots of Diet Coke.  Then at the entrance, turn around and pull your pants down and then fart.  While the effluent is coming out of  your posterior, have someone ignite it with a match or a welding torch.  The resulting firestorm will incinerate Valerie Jarrett and anyone else in that cave.

Most harvesters are way ahead of the curve on this and have been for many years now. Myself, I eat mostly Sitka Black tailed Deer, Moose and Mountain Goat. The only birds I eat are Grouse, they get a head shot from the .22. Most states already have prohibited toxic shot for birding.

NONTOXIC SHOT: The Solution to Lead Poisoning Nontoxic shot is required for hunting waterfowl, sandhill cranes, and snipe in Alaska. It is a violation to have shells loaded with lead shot in personal possession while hunting migratory birds. Shot sizes larger than T (0.20” diameter) are prohibited. Nontoxic shot also is required for muzzleloading shotguns. Current federally approved nontoxic shot types include: steel, bismuth-tin, tungsten-iron, tungsten-bronze, tungsten polymer, tungsten matrix, tungsten-tin-bismuth, TNI (HEVI-METAL), and TINT (HEVI-SHOT). Steel remains the most widely used and extensively tested nontoxic shot in the field. A complete list of approved nontoxic shot is available at http://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/CurrentBirdIssues/nontoxic.htm

But I thought tungsten was illegal cuz it is 'armor piercing'.

How much ammo stockpiled in the US in case of emergency would be outlawed by this?  Will they use something like this as an excuse to start hunting for and pilfering through such stockpiles?  Are the people responsible for this or this really concerned about ducks?

HalinCA's picture

But self defense loads of #10 and #00 can still be lead, right?

Spanky's picture

Well, since they want to outlaw lead, how about we switch to DU instead... DU is the bullet material of choice (for the DoD) in the 21st century. Using it for sporting bullet cores will remove the need for a permanent radioactive waste storage facility in deserts of (overcrowded) Nevada. Looks like a win-win to me.

Is there active hunting currently allowed on those sites?  Most of those battlegrounds would not have shot still laying on top of the ground, would they?  Decades ago I lived on a property that was part of the Battle of the Brandywine in Pennsylvania--there were still huge cannons left on the roadside up the street from my house.  No cannonballs were on the ground anymore, but I am fairly certain if we went out into the fields in this area and dug down deep enough, we'd find a few.  Same with whatever lead is leftover from all the places you mentioned.  It's buried by now or long since collected and taken away by people for reuse.

Without trying to be redundant, where the problem lies is in the corn and wheat fields where game birds/flocks are hunted because that's where the birds shelter/find food.  They ingest the scattered shot along with the grain or corn that ends up on the ground and that's the problem.  Humans can spit out the shot when they eat the prepared game and it shouldn't matter unless you bite into it and break teeth.  The fowl don't have teeth and that's why they eat gravel, which is what they mistake the shot for.  If it's lead, that poisons them--that's all.  Poisoning them is not good for anything.  It's not a matter of ending hunting or other shooting or even restricting guns.  It's just limiting the one type of shot in order to protect species that are not intended to be hunted or injured in the process, including human beings.

gonetogalt's picture

In my family we spit the shot out with the rest of the bones on the edge of the plate...whether extracted from fish, fowl, reptile or mammal.

Fairly trivial to replace lead shot with Heavy ceramic shot or steel.

EmeraldWI's picture

Shooting lead shot over a duck pond is the same as shooting gumballs over a playground. Except with the pond, wildlife dies. Depleted uranium bullets on a soldiers field does the same trick but, if the Koch Bros. spread it, ZH licks it up.

Bwana's picture

The ban on lead shot for waterfowl was ill conceived. It has resulted in millions of cripples that would otherwise be eaten by the hunter and counted in their bag limits. The full text of the why for this ill conceived regulation is in an article called "Without lead the 410 is dead". The years of analysis by qualified people  recommended lead shot with a heavy copper or nickle plating. It was stated that shot sizes of #5 or larger sink into the mud so quickly that they do not pose a threat to wildlife. Only shot smaller than #5 without copper or nickle plating used in an area of hard bottom ponds poses a threat to migratory waterfowl. The heavy plating allows the shot to pass through their digestive tract without the lead being exposed. Steel is a poor subsiitute for lead because of the density is so low it shows down very quickly. Also if it "bridges" the shotgun barrel can be ruined. Bismuth and tungston shells cost about 3 dollars each.

The environmentalists used a typical lie to help push the bill through. A California condor died from lead ingestion and it was reported that the lead was a bullet. Once the bill was passed it was found out the condor died from eating a big wheel weight probably while dining on a ground squirrel road pizza.

Remember after the market hunters almost wiped out the game in the US it was the US sportsmen who asked for an 11% tax on all fishing and hunting gear, stringent regulations and that the proceeds be used to benefit wildlife. Organizations like "Ducks Unlimited" raise money to buy wetlands and donate the property to provide habitat for migratory birds. "Quail Unlimited" does a similar thing and so do all of the other pro-wildlife organizations.
