Dollar Dumps After Trump Accuses China, Japan Of "Planning Money Markets"

Tyler Durden's picture

It appears America's 'strong dollar policy' is over. President Trump just commented that "other countries take advantage of America by devaluation," and then Trump directly named China and Japan as "planning money markets," presumably implying manipulation.

And the reaction in the dollar is clear...

Erasing all the post-ECB, post-Fed gains...

The Dollar Index has broken a key trendline...

USDJPY has broken a key support level... This is the biggest 2-day drop in USDJPY in six months.

About Time ~~~ Low $ = More Jabs ...

According to that logic, countries will a pathetic low currency should be rolling in jobs. Doesn't always work out that way, especially when you are the Reserve Currency of the World. Remember that the Pound Sterling used to be the World Reserve Currency. Don't think the Dollar can't be replaced. Then we will really see out standard of living sail out the window.

It's just the beginning.  Wait until bond buying kicks in.  It's macro hedges that kill you as they slowly unwind.

There is that 112.47 USD/JPY.  Not too good for bulls.

For some reason, I'm not worried about this news, since it's all been built on a cloud and almost all fake numbers from the gov for years anyway. Sometimes you get your glasses knocked off in a fight, but win the fight anyway. I'm loving watching reality return.

BigFatUglyBubble's picture

Since the whole election campaign this has been the biggest deviation from reality in the history of the world.  The hangover will be harsh, but people will be a little wiser from the experience.

You forgot liberal leftist communist cocksucker haters. Sorry. I felt left out.

RedBaron616's picture

Sorry, the real Nazis are those who think that if they destroy enough private property, that Trump will be forced to quit or be impeached. Their assault is on democracy, not Mr. Trump. These Nazis don't recognize the legitimacy of an election unless they win. This is exactly what the Nazis did: Protest, Crack Heads, Act Like Hoodlums.

Money will flow into the USD raising its value.

bshirley1968's picture

If this......check that........when this longest bull run in the history of the stock market is derailed, it will be laid a Trump's feet.  His popularity with the conservative sheeple will take a major hit, if it is perceived that his actions have hurt their wallet i.e. 401k.

I am longing for the day it gets cut in half, so to me he will have done a great job.  But to the average, low information sheeple, it will be his fault, the honeymoon will be over, and his power base could take a major hit.  If Janet does it now, it will set the stage for a power change in the House and Senate in the mid terms.  Campaigns are about to fire up, so now is the time to bring some pain.  When congressmen and senators have to defend a market in shambles, it will make their life difficult.  No one will give a crap about the Wall because they won't see that building their 401k back to the highs Obama gave them.

I know the faithful will stick with him no matter what, but the globalist will try to demonize him every step of the way, and with the candy ass, fickle sheeple we have in this country that won't be hard.  The republiwussies are just looking for a reason to turn on him.

It's going to be a hard line to walk.  Your wife is all about prepping until she has to give up some creature comfort or her routine of lifestyle is disrupted.  You can't have it all.  If Trump is going to wage war, there will be pain and casualties. .........on both sides.  Better buckle up, Buttercup.

BigFatUglyBubble's picture

Why is he talking down the dollar and talking up the market then.... and taking credit for the recent run-up (Tweeted "GREAT" at DOW20k and Scaramucci tweets).

Regardless, The end result will be the same, as you say.  The "People's President" will look like a failure.

bshirley1968's picture

Right.  Trump has zero control over the market.  Every decision can be spun either fit the agenda of those who DO have control of the numbers.  If they wanted, they could spin this immagration ban to be a positive on the economy and take stocks higher.  Trump is not driving this train, and that has been his real peril all along.  My question is, does he realize it and if so, when did he realize it.  That would reveal a lot about Mr. Trump.

BigFatUglyBubble's picture

It doesn't really matter; end result is the same.  The people look like they don't make good choices for themselves, and thus need more micro-managing style government.  In other words: Everything Clinton was about.

grumpyoldgit's picture

because he'll turn on a dime says one thing one week and say the opposite the next...neither he nor his chorus of clapping seals will remember what he said last week and if they do they won't care....

It beggars belief that the the presidential election was bewtween Trump and Clinton.... I'd have chosen cynaide before voting for either of them, if I had to vote

This is great. Everytime China plays shadow games Trump fires up the spotlight and throws a haymaker acroos the slope of their dome. Japan, take notes, ya'll. I'm pretty sure most business in the US want you on board, but me thinks you be fuckin' around a little too much.

Ok, Trump is the fucking bomb. You cannot tell me that one guy is going to say something and markets go jabberwocky. Or they do. Listen. All I'm trying to say is that there is no coorelation between one bet and another. The appearance of correlation is mostly always subjective. Things look co-related but they are not, or they are staged.

The stohcastic, people are going to take the fucking money. The uncertainty is good. Either people are cozy and re-assured or for once in thier paid lives they are uncertain.

Markets going fuck-all is good, imo. Just because the man talks is not necessarily why.

Conservative people don't really care so much about the money. The money that wasn't there. They care about the money people take from them that was there.

And fuck the money. Conservative people might have morality, belief in a higher power, and personal responsibility. Conservatives might also not want to take responsibility for another's actions. That's why fuck every pussy country and their stupid index. No one cares unless they suspend empathy.

JTimchenko's picture

This has nothing to do with Trump.

The big downturn in the dollar was well planned from the start. In fact, the preceding skyrocketing of its value was also designed by the banksters. It was all concocted to get non-connected speculators "all-in" on the dollar, and "all-out" of gold. Meanwhile, the banksters went "all-in" on gold and "all-out" the dollar.

If you question my conclusion, read these articles, where the overwhelming evidence is discussed in a way that is a lot better and convincing than I can accomplish here:

hotrod's picture

Agreed  Hillary's loss surprised.  The initial direction of markets was correct that evening.  They absolutely manipulated the change.

Dominus Ludificatio's picture

Trump is becoming like Obama ,thinking he can micromanage everything himself. It would be best to keep a sharp focus on the main job ahead .If the dollar is too strong it is not  the fault of Japan or China. You cannot have everything and have it both ways.

bshirley1968's picture

Yeah.  Seems he's getting caught up in the individual causes championed by of some of his advisors.  Fine by me, but when he gets too specific, he opens himself up to specific personal attacks.  That is why we have front men.  Let them take the hit, then back them up.
