Reddit Bans Three Alt-Right Forums As Users Blast "Leftist Intolerance"

Tyler Durden's picture

In what will undoubtedly be viewed as just another attempt to censor dissenting, conservative political views, Reddit has banned three major ‘alt-right’ subreddits, /r/altright, /r/rightyfriends and /r/alternativeright, this evening for allegedly breaching the company’s content policy restricting the sharing of personal, private information.  The so-called ‘Alt-right’ group had roughly 16,000 followers and grew in popularity last summer along with the rise of Donald Trump's political campaign.

While Reddit hasn't yet issued a formal statement on the ban, the following comments were offered up to The Daily Beast:

“Reddit is the proud home to some of the most authentic conversations online,” a statement provided to The Daily Beast by the company read. “We strive to be a welcoming, open platform for all by trusting our users to maintain an environment that cultivates genuine conversation and adheres to our content policy.”

“We are very clear in our site terms of service that posting of personal information can get users banned from Reddit and we ask our communities not to post content that harasses or invites harassment. We have banned r/altright due to repeated violations of the terms of our content policy. There is no single solution to these issues and we are actively engaging with the Reddit community to improve everyone's experience.”

Reddit Ban

A senior moderator of the atlright subreddit, who referred to himself as Bill Simpson, told The Daily Beast that the forum was “banned without notification or justification” and insisted that moderators "enforced stricter standards of behavior than reddit requires."

“So much for leftist tolerance. Our moderator team enforced stricter standards of behavior than reddit requires, and our users were very prompt at reporting violations so we could ban violators and delete posts and comments that broke the rules,” he added.

Additionally, Simpson claimed that the subreddit was banned because of its recent “record monthly traffic.”

“It's clear that Reddit banned us because we were becoming very popular and spreading inconvenient truths about who's ruining our country and robbing our children of a future,” Simpson said.

The announcement of the ban came just days after Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian penned an open letter trashing Trump's immigration ban, calling it "not only potentially unconstitutional, but deeply un-American."

After two weeks abroad, I was looking forward to returning to the U.S. this weekend, but as I got off the plane at LAX on Sunday, I wasn't sure what country I was coming back to.

President Trump’s recent executive order is not only potentially unconstitutional, but deeply un-American. We are a nation of immigrants, after all. In the tech world, we often talk about a startup’s “unfair advantage” that allows it to beat competitors. Welcoming immigrants and refugees has been our country's unfair advantage, and coming from an immigrant family has been mine as an entrepreneur.

Of course, all of this comes after Reddit CEO, Steve Huffman, admitted two months ago to editing individual posts made by Trump supporters that were critical of him.  Per the apology below, Huffman edited posts to redirect criticism away from him and onto the moderators of the "r/the_donald" thread.

Free speech is a wonderful thing, provided it conforms to the prevailing political views of Silicon Valley's elitist tech billionaires.

Reddit...not even once.

Me either so stupid..  got better things to do!

So let's say you want to express your views on a platform run by people who don't agree with you.  How far do you think you're going to get?

Yeah, exactly.  When you've figured out who you're not allowed to criticize, you've figured out who's in charge.  That is ALWAYS true, even on ZH.

I don't know what reddit is, but I do know that it belongs to someone. And if that someone doesn't like how you play in their sandbox, then they can tell you to get the fuck out. No big deal. Just find a different place to play.

They banned /pizzagate  too

You people dissing Reddit need to understand that much creativity is coming from the likes of Reddit.  Your handwaving grandfatherly baaaahs are not helpful to anyone.  They only highlight your ignorance of the current situation.   Did you not note that 4Chan wrote the Trump dossier that punked the following list

  • Rick Wilson was punked who pumped the peeing hookers "dossier" up the chain to Evan McMullin
  • Evan McMullin who pass it on to John McCain and likely CNN
  • John McCain who passed it on to CIA ( CIA might have been who leaked to CNN since CNN== CIA News Network )

It does not get better than that.  Your grumbling and using old tactic of bah humbug is not going to save the day.  Trump got elected because of new media and people like this who made monkey's uncles out of our rulers.  ( which is a nicer term than they deserve )

We need more 4Chan and alt righters making people realize what douchbags have been running the show.  Few additional minds will be changed by "bah humbug".  But when you make it exciting and fun you run the table.

There there sweetie ... run along now and go play at the park ... the KKK will find you another platform

What a deep, insightful comment. Couldn't have done without it.

Exactly.  Places like 4Chan are where the new landscape is being fought over, and TPTB know this.  Millions of dollars for sock puppet account companies is not money thrown into the fire for no purpose.  Both Reddit and 4Chan are being infiltrated by agents of governments to shame any speech that doesn't conform to the direction they want society to take place.  When that didn't work they bought 4Chan and gave Reddit an offer they couldn't refuse.

Stop fighting the last war.  These are the platforms where diverse people can meet and build something new - a global plaza.  Unfortunately they are making the brightest drink hemlock for corrupting the youth, and convincing the masses that what could be the best tool to fight tyranny is also just a vanity device for vapid youths.

The media plays nothing but the latest smartphone zombies walking into traffic or celeb selfie showing some nipple, but that isn't the whole story.  Flash mobs, instant communications that can be encrypted, audio and video surveillance all in one handheld device.  That tool can work BOTH ways, and it is an insanely powerful to fight against the current regime.  Why do you think the push for censorship on the internet has been on the docket for YEARS.  For anyone that understands the technology, all the efforts to crack down will just sprout new circumvention of them.

Tech can't set us free, but it is doing a remarkable job waking people up.

"That is ALWAYS true, even on ZH."

For several years now I have never had a comment removed or censored on ZH.  Even though I have taken great pains to explain what murdering pricks zionists are.

What's Reddit?  Seriously.

I get my news from numerous contrarians sources, including: ZH, Breitbart, RT, InfoWars.

And from select MSM: WSJ, Biz and Technology sections of various papers and mags.

<< What is Reddit? >>

Evidently, it's the left wing intolerant web site that bans free speech and evidently has ties to violent extremist groups like the DNC. Don't read it if you favor free speech and intelligent open discussions.

Mr. Bones's picture

That rose to prominence when another site, Digg, decided it wasn't interested in having users anymore and alienated them by moderating or banning any conversation that wasn't double plus good.

Oh, look what Reddit is doing now.  Trouble is, the 'undesirables' are organized this time and know that they aren't a leper minority.  This is how Alinskys rules fail - if power is what the enemy thinks you have and the enemy is pretty sure you've got nothing other than the ban hammer which no longer commands the awe it used to... Reddit will be a microcosm of the established order losing control.

time to find a social media presence that hasn't been converged by SJW scum. But guess what? no such platform exists!

"find a need a fill it", o young entrepreneurs.....

2_legs_bahhhhhd's picture

The regressives are censoring free speech using psycho babble. This smells like something much bigger, like total control over the web. It started with political correctness and has morphed into emotional blackmail for anyone daring to be intolerant of their intolerance. The sheep will scrap it out while our society continues to crumble.

Good luck, it's us and them

Sounds like a great business opportunity. Same with news sources. We see Infowars, Drudge, Milo, etc gaining groun rapidly as middle of the road fair reporting news outlets as th eFake News channels like cnn, npr, nbc, etc fade away.

I suspect in two years nyt won't even exist. If Trump and Jack Ma work things out it's possible we'll see lots of new competing everything here in the world of news, shopping online, etc.

"nyt won't even exist"

Oh, some other tech twit with scads of money to play with will buy it as a hobby to annoy his political opponents, like Bezos did with WaPoo.

Yes, I agree that is the primary alternative to Reddit at this moment, but even Voat is too far to the left.  Furthermore, and ominously, Voat's primary founder, Atko, recently decided to quit Voat, leaving user /u/PutItOut in charge.  I am certin that PutItOut will ruin Voat because he was largely responsible for the "SheBacle" on Voat during August, 2015, a scandal that ultimately impelled me to leave Voat and return to ZH.

Insomnant's picture

"Communazis" is likely the most historically retarded term possible. I understand why you use it- your brainwashing has instilled a belief that "Nazi" means "ultimate evil"- but it's still incredibly misinformed.

Yes, the draining of all meaning from our political vocabulary has left us in near-incoherence, preventing us from having meaningful conversations.  This is not accidental.

slwsnowman40's picture

So what word currently fits with how the leftists are currently acting?  They are well past anarchists after this last weekend and having Bezerkly live up to the name.

They tend to want communism.  By definition, they aren't fascists, but they certainly are in tactics.  Anarchists tend to be more in line wtih libertarians than the controling leftists.

I like ctrl-left.  But that doesn't seem nasty enough for them.

Amen! Pick a word: crybullies, F$A, qq'rs, butthurt, fapping whiners, fapping qq'rs, anti fa, Anti Fa, anti fascists.

The thing these morons fail to understand is their ignorance makes them useful idiots and they are being used, and used badly, by the far left.

My idea of a good time isn't living in Cuba or North Korea or Venezuela. All of those places have very strong communist dictatorships and the people are treated like fertilizer. Cheap, easy to starve, easy to kill, and easy to spread their remains without ceremony! I just don't get how some of these spoiled leftist brainwashed idiots can think that communism is a good idea! They don't even get they will be the first ones sacrificed! This is mass delusion. I don't get it now and I never will understand how so many people can suffer from this mass hysteria / delusional thinking.

Fuck reddit - it's become a circlejerk cesspit with millions of fanatical, triggered SJW brigaders who will downvote the shit out of anybody who says or implies that the media is biased, the federal government shouldn't be expanded 10X, and Pres Barack Golfbama wasn't the greatest of all time. Say a mildly positive thing about Trump and they will do their best to dox and/or ban you. It has seriously become an unsafe place for anyone except the far left. And further proof that "tolerant" liberal tech execs are totally unable to run a neutral business.

TeethVillage88s's picture

Well it is high tech potential source of intel for DHS, FBI, NSA, or CIA.

Sooo... it was always going to become a govt operation!

Never One Roach's picture

Any site that does not recognize what a total failure Osama bin Bama was is no friend of mine, Reddit included. I'm glad to see so many dem realizing how bad the DNC has become and are switching to this quasi-Republican party lead by Trump who is not a real repugnican but more of the middle of the raod libertarian.
