Russia Mobilizes S-400 Missiles Systems Near Moscow To "Test Readiness Against A Possible Attack"

Tyler Durden's picture

One month ago we reported that Russia had deployed S-400 air defense missile systems in proximity to Moscow, which were then put on combat duty. “The SAM combat squads of the Moscow Region aerospace forces have put the new S-400 Triumph air defense missile system into service, and have gone on combat duty for the air defense of Moscow and the central industrial region of Russia,” the Defense Ministry’s Department of Information and Mass Communication told Interfax in early January.

While the ministry did not explicitly state why the rollout was taking place, it added that “the main task of the anti-aircraft missile troops of the Russian Aerospace Forces is air defense and protecting vital state, military, industry and energy facilities, as well as the Armed Forces troops and transport communications, from aerospace attacks.”

Fast forward one month, when overnight the missile systems in proximity to Moscow got their first real test, when air defense systems around Moscow were put on high alert Wednesday as part of a surprise nationwide combat readiness drill for the Russian Air Force which was meant to "test how prepared Russia is to repel a possible attack.“

“Units of the air defense force responsible for defending Moscow and the central industrial region have been put on highest combat alert,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement. “The air defense mission involves fully-manned combat crews.”

A part of the test, the ministry added, involved the redeployment of batteries of S-300, S-400 and Pantsir-S air defense systems to backup positions in a simulation of area contamination. The guards of the batteries also conducted anti-saboteur maneuvers and trained to operate in hard terrain.

Russia Deputy Defense Minister Aleksandr Fomin said that the drill is part of the surprise Russian Air Force training ordered by President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. It involves 45,000 troops and 1,700 pieces of military equipment, including 150 aircraft and 200 surface-to-air missile launchers. Fomin met foreign military attaches on Wednesday to brief them on the situation.

“This is a surprise exercise and thus not subject to control under the Vienna document or the OSCE documents. No formal notification was required, but we do inform you as a gesture of goodwill,” he said. The snap exercise will last until Thursday, Fomin added. The Russian official said it is meant to test how prepared Russia is to repel a possible attack.“

"During the test we pay special attention to the deployment of air defense and the readiness of aviation groups to respond to an aggression,” he said, before detailing how exactly Russia was moving its troops during the exercise.

As RT adds, the briefing came amid alarmed reports in some Western media outlets which claimed that the exercise was meant to telegraph Russian preparations for war.

what's goin on?

HowdyDoody's picture

Russia uses an airbase in Iran to attack the US-sponsored terrorists in Syria. How soon before that becomes a formal lease treated as Russian territory, which would be protected by S-400s and S-300e's? An attack on Iran would have to take out all airbases and airbase defense systems, ie an attack on Russian territory. Then we would have WW III by the backdoor (a la Obomber).

Do the Americans think that far ahead?

sinbad2's picture

To end the 70 years of threats against Russia, they have to take out the USA.

The others only follow Americas orders, kill America, and the whole world gets out of jail.

barndoor's picture

DJT aint gunna attack Russia.  That would be like pissing in the wind.  Or on a bunch of hookers.

Kirk2NCC1701's picture

It's not DJT who's looking for trouble with Putin.  It's the Neocons and MIC Deep State who are.

Evidently Russians have intel that suggests that DJT may not have as much control/influence over these characters, as he claims or thinks he does. They might even have intel on a false-flag op, that seeks to pin blame on them or the Iranians.

Thus, they are hedging their bets against any surprises in the coming months. A la "Better safe than sorry."

If the POTUS does not have control over the pentagon and NATO, who does ?

froze25's picture

Putin could fart and the western MsM would say he is biologically attacking the Ukraine and we need to nuke them.

HenryHall's picture

Good question, who does?

But if Pentagon/NATO does attack Russia, even a purely land invasion, then we are all dead and dying. And nothing else matters at that point.

barndoor's picture

So NATO is going to attack Russia without Trump/USA.

Explain to me how exactly that works?

Kirk...

true enough. Putin is smart enough to realize that America is a fracturing basket case. It would not take much for a shrill Hillary to "accidentally on purpose" start WWIII with Russia because "...it was her turn to WIN." Putin is covering all bets is all.

Best deal about Hillary losing in fine fashion? Cankles will NOT be above ground 12 months from now. It is high time that bitch took the big dirt nap. I hope her and her sicko hubbie go at the same time! Haiti might be given a second chance without such vampires sucking them dry.

The Clinton's themselves know they are marked for termination. Any chance of that wrench-in-the-making Chelsea could tag along with mom 'n dad to their AfterLife in the basement of PingPong Pizza?

Where's me jumper's picture

Yep, the second they cooled off re the summit, I knew they had info. Wouldn't surprise me if the adults in the global room won't miss the implications. And I'd still love to know what that General was doing at the G20 summit back along.

Krungle's picture

Haven't you figured out their play yet? They always telegraph. All these leaks about POTUS is mentally unsound. Impeach him. Insert Pence. Investigate the evil Russians for putting their agent into the WH. Find yellow cake quality evidence that Trump was, in fact, Putin's agent. Attack Russia.

It may not play out like that (telegraphing your plans has a funny way of throwing a monkey wrench in the works), but Putin has already deduced this is a possibility and is acting accordingly. Beyond that, hostilities with Iran and China can potentially spill over, causing unpredictable outcomes. And it is also possible NATO gives Ukraine more toys, including missiles capable of hitting Moscow. Every other major power is on guard right now, but it seems the only preparations we have made is making sure our oligarchs have rat holes to escape to in New Zealand.

In a saner world we'd call for a summit with Russia ASAP since having a nuclear power on hair trigger alert is not safe for anyone....

If you believe what the SVR says then a faction of the masons lead by trump is currently in a Shadow war with the Jewish/illuminati Vatican over the fate of the world and who will control it.

<<Thank You Notes>>

Thank you, NATO.  For giving us the radar signatures of all your land and air-based systems.  Our sophisticated new weapons need a baseline.

Catch you on the flip.

Well , the US military buildup on the Russian border , could be a little hint .

DetectiveStern's picture

Who reckons that some NATO troops will get false flagged near the Russian boarder and this is used as an excuse to start a war? I wouldn't expect it to happen until spring/summer though.

NoWayJose's picture

So Russia practices how to defend its country - while US troops practice how to round up citizens!

Solidus Snake's picture

Jam them just like the Israelis did with Pantsir batteries, these Russian SAMs are not invincible as the comrades want you to believe.

WTF is going on, I thought Trump was going to end this shit?

soyungato's picture

"I'm one of your middle class Americans. And quite frankly, I'm exhausted. Exhausted of defending you, defending your administration, defending the mantle of change that I voted for," a woman told President Obama.

It has been less than a month already I am seeing a hint of that sentiment among us who voted for Trump. Deed speak louder than word -  why is PUTIN worried ?  Where is that NATO is a relic of the 60s argument ?  Why are we provoking Iran ? Why are we selling weapon to the Saudis ?

back to basics's picture

Why??? Because we were all fed a bunch of bullshit. And don't forget to ask how can you drain the swamp when you just surrounded yourself with a bunch of Wall Street insiders? And Obamacare??? What's up with that except it looks like he is trying to give medical monopolies more power and exemption from price fixing prosecution.

We've been had. I already accepted it. Slowly others on here based on what's been posted are starting to accept it too.

Yep.  When Pizzagate perp walks are imminent TPTB will need a distraction bigger than 9/11, which drowned out / covered up oceans of filth ranging from stolen trillion$ at the Pentagon to Paula Poundstone's child molestation plea deal, to destruction of evidence regarding epic fraud on Wall Street.

Remember the sage words of (((Rahm Emanuel))) . . .

when is the usa going to bomb japan? they are making all sorts of political and economic deals with russia. the japanese must be stopped!

Spungo's picture

Putin is trying to scare Russians into supporting him. Politicians always do this. Say there's an immediate threat, do a bunch of drills, keep everyone scared. If the threat ever goes away, people start to ask questions about the economy and various other things.

Arkadin's picture

This is a ludicrous cliche.  US is engaged in the biggest build-up on Russia's borders since the Wehrmacht in 1941.  That -- coupled with the anti-Russian hysteria of U.S. regime media -- has convinced V. V. Putin that it might be wise to  begin planning for the natonal defense.

max_leering's picture

Putin has 80-85% approval rating at home... ask the Krauts if Russia is scared... ask the French... it costs no more to run a drill or have soldiers sitting in barracks... the u.s. deep sate wants to break up any sort of coalition between Russia, Iran and China in Eurasia... if that doesn't happen the deep state will find another path to war, guaranteed

wizteknet's picture

Love when russia waste's fiat, ammo & fuel for such exercises....

Have you been to Russia lately? You are buying the line of Obama and the MSM about how powerful we are and how badly our sanctions hurt Russia. If you go, you will quickly see the stores are full, there are no lines, prices are reasonable, and the average Russian is doing just fine. It's only effect has been to increase the price of imported goods, like cheese and clothes. And in response increased domestic production has filled some of that. Indeed, many of,the domestic producers will fight to have the sanctions continued. What has hurt Russia, has been the drop in oil.

kochevnik's picture

Domestic foods have higher quality.  Our food was contaminated with counterfeit foreign products in local labels.  Russia was complete economy before, and we have CIS.  USA only made stores with worthless potato chips in Moscow so never gained traction.  At least Germany made serious effort to trade during perestroika.  Who needs American autos which rust after one year and are torn apart on our roads?  Only for poor people.  Only buy classic American car for display.  In any case USA only makes war and most raw foods come outside of west.  If ban even enforced by military, Pakistani traders would return with food on their backs to sell at local markets again.  USA talking points are laughable bullshiyte

Troy Ounce's picture

It is all about gold.

Ask Saddam Houssein & Mohammed Gadaffi who wanted to change oil payment from US $ to gold.

Gold payments for oil are forbidden and therefore a matter of US national security. It would mean a weak US $

Now Iran, protected by Russia, wants to do the same!

Iran knows but does not give a fuck. Like Houssein & Gadaffi.
