Roughly Half Of All Illegal Immigrants Live In these 10 Metro Areas

Tyler Durden's picture

As Trump getsset to ramp up pressure on so-called "sanctuary cities", and sanctuary states in the case of California, here is a look at where the majority of illegal immigrants in the United States are currently residing.  Per data from the Pew Research Center, approximately 60% of all illegal immigrants live in just 20 metropolitan areas across the country.

Most of the United States’ 11.1 million unauthorized immigrants live in just 20 major metropolitan areas, with the largest populations in New York, Los Angeles and Houston, according to new Pew Research Center estimates based on government data.

The analysis shows that the nation’s unauthorized immigrant population is highly concentrated, more so than the U.S. population overall. In 2014, the 20 metro areas with most unauthorized immigrants were home to 6.8 million of them, or 61% of the estimated nationwide total. By contrast, only 36% of the total U.S. population lived in those metro areas.

By far the biggest unauthorized immigrant populations were in the New York and Los Angeles metro areas (1.2 million and 1 million, respectively). No other metro area approached a million. Among the top 20 areas, the smallest unauthorized immigrant populations included Orlando (110,000) and Austin (100,000).

Illegal Immigration

Meanwhile, the top 10 metropolitan areas alone account for nearly 50% of illegal immigrants and just three states, California, Texas and New York, make up roughly 37% of the total.

Illegal Immigration

Of course, these numbers will become increasingly important over the coming months as the Trump administration continues to develop policy related to what will undoubtedly be a controversial topic for the next 4-8 years.  In a recent interview on Fox News, President Trump intimated to Bill O'Reilly that all options, including the defunding of entire states, would be on the table for places that refuse to enforce federal immigration laws.

“I think it’s ridiculous. Sanctuary cities, as you know, I’m very much opposed to sanctuary cities. They breed crime, there’s a lot of problems,” Trump said.

“If we have to, we’ll defund,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News host Bill O’Reilly before the Super Bowl. “We give tremendous amounts of money to California, California in many ways is out of control, as you know.”

Trump told O’Reilly that he didn’t want to defund a state or a city and would like to give them “the money they need to properly operate.”

But the president added that “if they’re going to have sanctuary cities, we may have to do that. Certainly that would be a weapon.”

And, with $27 billion of federal funding at stake, we suspect that at least a few rogue cities will be forced to fall in line.  Here is some data on which states/cities receive the most federal funding (see "Deplorable? Obama Sent $27 Billion Taxpayer Money To Fund Sanctuary Cities In 2016"):

Here are the top 10 takeaways from our findings:

  1. $26.741 billion in annual federal grants and direct payments flowed into America’s 106 sanctuary cities (FY2016).
  2. On average, the cost of lost federal funding for a family of four residing in one of the 106 sanctuary cities is $1,810 – or $454 per person. A total population of 46.2 million residents live in the 106 sanctuary cities according to census data.
  3. Washington, D.C., and Chicago, Illinois governments received the highest amount of federal funding per resident and, therefore, have the most to lose by maintaining their sanctuary status.Washington, D.C. municipal government received the highest amount of federal funding on a per capita basis: $3,228 per person; $12,912 per family of four; or $2.09 billion total. The City of Chicago, IL received the second highest amount of federal funding on a per capita basis: $1,942 per person; $7,768 per family of four; or $5.3 billion total.
  4. In cities with populations of 100,000 and above, the communities with the least per capita federal dollars ‘at risk’ are St. Paul, Minnesota ($47 per person, $14.2 million total); Downey, California ($36 per person, $4.2 million total) and Miami, Florida ($67 per person, $29.7 million total).
  5. $15.983 billion in federal funds flowed into just twelve major American cities where 1 in 5 illegal entrants reside (FY2016).
  6. Department of Justice grants to law enforcement – i.e. city police departments – totaled $543.97 million (FY2016). Typically, this funding was only a small percentage of the local law enforcement budgets.
  7. $4.23 billion in federal funding of the 106 sanctuary cities flowed via the ‘direct payment’ type. These payments funded municipal services such as housing, education, community development, and schools.
  8. $21.5 billion in federal funding of the 106 sanctuary cities flowed via the ‘grant’ payment mechanism. These payments funded local police and fire departments, schools, housing, and city services.
  9. In Los Angeles, fully 1 in 5 city residents (22-percent) are illegal entrants. However, the amount of federal funding amounts to only $126 per resident; $504 per family of four; or $502.5 million total.
  10. In Newark, New Jersey, 19-percent of city residents are undocumented entrants. However, the amount of federal funding amounts to $733 per resident; $2,932 per family of four; or $206.7 million.

It really is a pity that Jerry Brown only has 2 years left in office...a four-year, Trump-Brown battle would be a glorious thing to observe.

We have a YUUUGE problem here in Portland...stack the homeless onto that.  Very interesting times.

I live in one of those cities. Come purge it Mr. President. My heart is not open to criminals and crimnal enablers.

Dallas County taxpayers pay $1 billion a year to fund Parkland Hospital to provide free health care to illegals. That's about $1000 per household that actually owns something.

Sonny Brakes's picture

It amazes me how much of a good sport the American taxpayer has become. Does home ownership still define the American dream?

Need more "unauthorizeds" in NYC.  Price of chopped salad still too damn high.

I was thinking the same about Orlando. Thats gotta be a low ball estimate.

I bet the traffic in Atlanta would be one hell of a lot better with the illegal immigrants removed from the roads.

These are just the ones they were able to count.

...and we are suppose to believe that none of them voted Hitlery.

Every illegal alien is a criminal first and an immigrant second. Their first act inside our country was to break its law. They may not all be violent criminals, but those who flout the law are criminals. End of story. Come in the front door or don't come in at all.

EddieLomax's picture

This is the bit I'm so perplexed over, how can a city in the US ignore the laws of the US?  I'd yank their funding overnight just based on that.

If a judge then could rule that it was illegal to stop giving money to people who were breaking the law then I think I'd be firing a few judges...

Countrybunkererd's picture

Inga Andrews, AJ infowars, enough said.

There actually are Mexicans scrupulous enough to not break the law.

They mostly stay home.

The irony is these are the very ones who would really make America great

Most Americans have stood by and watched and now are shocked at what they see ? Why is anybody shocked about any of it since it has taken 30 years of constant talk and the wall has been authorized now 3 or 4 times and still does not exist. How fucking stupid and weak is that ?

Beyond that we really could seal our borders without a wall if we had the political will to do so. It is all bullshit and lies from both sides for decades

Instead of giving them Freebies, why don't we just charge them Rent ?  If I want to go to Australia I must have a Bond in place to cover a return ticket, if they even let me come for a visit ! My white ass can not enter Canada becaus I had a DUI 25 years ago. Examining the real Imbalances among races is where the truth lays.

30 to 40 million Illegals in the USA at $1000 a month rent per head, to stay. Billions !

Sonny Brakes's picture

In Canada, your white ass would stick out like a sore thumb.

We're being overrun with south Asians and each one of them seems to always be on the phone with their favourite goat. Now, why would anyone leave a goat country for a non-goat country? It doesn't make any sense.

How did Dallas and Houston end up on that list? Arent they in Texas?

goober's picture

Been to Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin in the last decade ? Or any where along the Rio Grande or El Paso

goober's picture

Yes item 9 of the lower list does not consider anything except cost to get them their and groups like LA RAza etc  to support for their message. The true cost is far beyond item 9. In fact I doubt anybody actually knows the entire true cost to all of us. But it is in the many billions at a minimum, likely trillions over a matter of years this has been ongoing

Somehow we need to cut the funding to these cesspools. Why should taxpyers fund these?

If libtard judges and Kornifornicators and Seattlites want to fudn them, let them. Count my hard-earned tax dollars out. Let them come in legally like all past immigrants have done. These judges are out of control and Congress needs to take a more pro-active roll and not sit on their asses like they did when Shithead forced Obamacare down our throats.

I already called my two senators and warned them I'll contribute to their opponents unless they stop loafing and actually do some work for a change.

I am still just dumbfounded that this is actually even being debated that one should be allowed to pick and choose laws to follow.

In my small town in North Carolina the Mayor went to Mexico for two weeks in 2003 and bought billboard space advertising "come to NC for jobs",the powers that be said it would keep manufacturing from leaving, insuring no loss in tax revenue. These days 60 percent of the school children don't speak English at home. I'm getting a group of people together to file a class action damage suit in fed. court for 100million dollars.

Good idea but needs a modification. Defund every sanctuary city and state except for LA, Seattle, Portland, Frisco, and the state of California. In all other states pass laws that will drive the illegals out and will have them head for California, Seattle and Portland. Once these places are up to their necks in illegals and have to put up with the illegals crap and bleeding them dry they will be at the forefront of deportation. Once they walk the walk they will realize how stupid their ideas really are. Plus they deserve to live the misery they enabled for everyone else.

EddieLomax's picture

Actually that makes a lot of sense, the liberals can stand around telling others how morally superior they are while the easy targets are shut down.

Then defund LA, Seattle, Portland and Frisco and let the liberals start paying for their own mess.  As on top of the rampant crime, huge unemployment and rock bottom living standards for the low skilled they'd have an unpayable bill that would likely bankrupt public services (and their pensions).  The beauty is that all that could be done within one Trump term, the damage will be done by then to the lefty cause.

9th Circus Court decision summary:  "It doesn't matter what the law says - we might hurt someone's feelings!"

No Border = No Country.  There is a corollary there to an individual having no boundaries so they can base their self-esteem on how nice they are to everyone - then wondering why they get ripped off and abused.

was just in portland (oregon, that is) for first time recently.  was struck by 2 things:  the residents are very warm, kind.  the homeless, not so much and so so so so many of them.  just out of control.  appears to be a formerly great place, now, not so much

Keep your head in the sand dumb ass. With people like you it won't take long and the US will be one big barrio from sea to shining sea. Sanctuary from the law. What an interesting concept.

Ann Coulter has a great yootoob interview with Tucker Carlson where she expalins exactly that---the Dems seek to import as many illegals as possible and turn them into future dems so the Democrats will have such an overwhleming majority they will NEVER be voted out of office.

That's why you saw them keep screaming that Hillary got the popular vote. This is their big plan that Trump threw a wrench into and is driving them crazy. He is preventing them from turning the United States into a total shit heap and they don't like it.

Very scary eh.

That scenario backfired when a good number of Latinos decided the liked Trump and didn't give Killary the numbers she wanted to outvote white workingclass voters... Trump of course is a False Messiah... so we're all screwed, except not by HRC and the Dems this time out. But they'll get their chance soon enought as the reality of Drump sinks in.
