The Four Kinds Of Dystopia - Which One Is Yours?

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by Darren Allen via ExpressiveEgg,org,

The twentieth century saw four basic visions of hell on earth, or dystopia.

These were:

Orwellian. Rule by autocratic totalitarian people, party or elite group, limitation of choice, repression of speech and repression of minorities, belief in order, routine and rational-morality. Control by enclosure, fear and explicit violence. Violent repression of dissent (via ‘the party line’). Erotic physicality and sexual freedom suppressed via control of sexual impulses. Control of thought by explicitly policing language (Orwellian Newspeak).

Huxleyan Rule by democratic totalitarian systems, excess of choice, limitation of access to speech platforms, assimilation of minorities, belief in emotional-morality, ‘imagination’ and flexibility, and control by desire, debt and implicit threat of violence. No overt control of dissent (system selects for system-friendly voices). Erotic physicality and sexual freedom suppressed via promotion of pornographic sensuality and dissolution. Control of thought by implicitly enclosing language within professional boundaries (Illichian Newspeak, or Uniquack).

Kafkaesque Rule by bureaucracy. Control of populace via putting them into writing, forcing people to spend free time on bureaucratic tasks, thereby inducing tractable stress and the schizoid, self-regulating self-consciousness (anxiety about low marks, unlikes, official judgements and the like) that bureaucratic surveillance engenders. Generation of a system which structurally rewards those who seek an indirect relationship with their fellows or who, through fear of life, seek to control it through the flow of paperwork.

Phildickian Rule by replacing reality with an abstract, ersatz virtual image of it. This technique of social control began with literacy - and the creation of written symbols, which devalued soft conscious sensuous inspiration, fostered a private (reader-text) interaction with society, created the illusion that language is a thing, that meaning can be stored, owned and perfectly duplicated, that elite-language is standard and so on - and ended with virtuality - the conversion of classrooms, offices, prisons, shops and similar social spaces into ‘immersive’ on-line holodecks which control and reward participants through permanent, perfect surveillance, the stimulation of positive and negative emotion, offers of godlike powers, and threats to nonconformists of either narco-withdrawal or banishment to an off-line reality now so degraded by the demands of manufacturing an entire artificial universe, that only hellish production-facilities, shoddy living-units and prisons can materially function there.

The reader can decide for herself under which of above we currently struggle to eke out a life worth living. I would like to suggest that all modern societies are both Kafkaesque and Phildickian with either a Huxleyan or Orwellian overarching framework; modern, western, capitalist societies tend to be basically Huxleyan (HKP) and pre-modern, eastern, communist countries tend to be basically Orwellian (OKP).

The reason why ideological managers (academics, film directors, journalists, etc) prefer to have two (or more) dystopian systems is that it makes us seem like the goodies and them the baddies. Communism is to blame for their foodbanks and breadlines, but capitalism has nothing to do with ours (or vice versa). Sure our masses have the same miserable lives as theirs, reel under the same bureaucratic insanity, stumble around the same shoddy unreal worlds, and witness the same catastrophic destruction of nature and beauty as theirs do, but at least we’ve got democracy! / at least our families stick together! / at least the trains run on time! / at least GTA 9 is coming out soon / at least the Olympics will cheer us up (delete as appropriate).

They are all brilliant authors, but Huxley for the win.

Thanks for the link.  Love this guy.  "Boris, knock it off!", while he makes another excellent point.

@ Rand:

I like him too...and he raises a valid point about overwhelming their algos, and screwing them up, by using certain words and phrases, so the 'Do No Evil' Hotdog Company, has to manually tweak the algos constantly.

The real goal is to get the advertisers caught in Google's fake news trap, too... and hurt them financially.

Like Coca-Cola Pizzagate, CNN walnut sauce, and Anheuser-Busch Arkancide.

I hope everyone on this site sees it, uses it everywhere, and gets others to use it as well.

We could very easily come up with an entire ZH 'language' of sorts.

That's not cold. 8 feet of snow is cold. That guy has plenty of firewood.

What we got now is a fucked up all four authors  tossed into the fuel pool of Reactor Number 2 Fukushima deformed monster ass fucker of a reality show on steroids and Viagra.

plus a google (the number not the alphabet agency.)

It as if the pure statists (atheistic human secularists across political spectrum ) and the pure Satanists (occultists like the Clintons) could not agree on one, or even two of these, so they implemented the worst aspects of all 4. Where there were policy conflicts in the combination, they warped our reality to maximize the suffering at all costs.

Googol is the number 1 followed by 100 zeroes.

Google is an Orwellian company founded by the NSA and CIA.

I agree. Huxley nailed the drugs, the zoned out stupid people, and those willing to show up and live communally.

Did anyone else watch the final espisode of "Alone?" There was one chick that turned out to be the prototypical fucking hippie. She lives on Lopez Island in WA state. Built a great little place and was able to recover from spider bites but she couldn't handle winning money and owning land. Another WTF moment for me. Seriously? I bet that stupid bitch doesn't even realize that Paul Allen, a former MIcrosoft VP, bought out a former boyscout camp on Lopez Island which made that part of the island off limits to the public, forever. Only invited guests are allowed to what was formerly an amazing Boy Scout camp. This little commie bitch is cute enough to live via hook-ups, for now, but once her she hits 50-ish no one is going to want to deal with her wrinkled fugly ass or face or attitude.

"But then, later this year, came a notice from the new owner: there was no place for Camp Nor'wester in the plans of Mr. Allen. He intends to build a house as long as a football field -- 300 feet on one side alone -- that will displace the open-air lodge and little buildings that have formed a collective church of the outdoors for nearly 20,000 children over a course of 50 years.

The announcement set off alarms among three generations of Camp Nor'wester alumni, a group that includes a White House speechwriter to President Clinton, an Olympic gold medalist in skiing, a former Governor of Washington State, and the late mother of Mr. Allen's longtime friend and fellow Microsoft founder, Bill Gates."

I was thrilled that the winner of $500K was from Maine. My mother was from Maine and she was one tough woman but the toughest woman in my life was my Grandmother. Another Mainer. Mom was tough but my Grandmother was even tougher and she knew how to do everything from making soap to cooking using a wood stove to quilting and to raising chickens and a garden.

If you have been poor you have no problem getting rich. You know the alternative and that alternative sucks.

Paul Allen is an asshole in a faux candy wrapper. Does this surprise anyone?

HRH Feant's picture
HRH Feant (not verified) williambanzai7 Feb 13, 2017 11:50 PM

No. But what surprises me is he owns a large property on an island surround by commie dipshits that spout this fake bullshit about I can't be rich, blah blah.

Wealth doesn't bother me. I think it was bullshit that Allen was able to buy that old boyscout camp, which is bascially a second island connected to Lopez Island via a small landbridge. Interesting that the NYT article I posted mentioned Bill Gates mother protesting the sale.

I am guessing the hippie dipster chick that was on "Alone" will be able to capitalize on the show in a number of ways. I am guessing she was a dyke so will be able to sell herself to the other dykes on the island, and those off the island, by selling get-away-vacations that teach "wilderness skills."

In other words, carpet muncher heaven.

Great person. We Don't live in the matrix, and Huxleys' imagination proves it.

Huxley from those above explanations, but bits and pieces of all of them.

New World Chaos's picture

Lovecraftian:  Rule by cultists who get themselves posessed by supremely evil alien entities.  Mind control through satanic ritual abuse and the creation of split personalities.  The capital has pizza joints with creepy art upstairs, and basements interconnected by dungeons in which you will find pineal-eating ghouls, inter-dimensional vampires, blood-bathing witches who look half their age, tortured children, rooms full of unlabeled jars of "pizza sauce", inexplicable occult shit, and men with guns who will kill you in the name of the law- supposedly your law, but really THEIRS.  You come to realize that our entire civilization was built as a soul-farm for the devil.  Nobody believes you.  You go nuts.  You end up in a padded cell, abandoned to the tender mercies of a Reptilian Nurse Ratched.

But he left out a fifth prescient work -Harrison Bergeron by Vonnegut. In the Bergeronian dystopia, everyone is equally handicapped down to the lowest common denominator.

Or Idiocracy... (aka "The Marching Morons" by Cyril M. Kornbluth 1951)

At least a dab of Blade Runner ("Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K. Dick) would be a nice break from the Big Bureaucrat is watching/ Affirmative action Handicapper General/ Dysgenic EBT Idiocracy/ soma and HotDog School induced slide into oblivion.

Another one to add to the mix: Bradburian (Fahrenheit 451).

you guys know Huxley set out to write a dystopian satiric novel. right?

he didn't want to be right about his vision, it was a literal warning.  >sigh<

As has been said about 1984...

It was a warning, not a handbook.

The VA has turned into a Kafkaesque nightmare. I have often considered handing out a copy of "Metamorphosis" to VA employees with a small mirror glued to the cover.

I doubt they would understand the irony of that gift.

Guys, come on, Kafka.

Try this mind experiment. Imagine you want to cook hot dogs on a grill and sell them from your front yard.

How many agencies and how many hoops?

Kafka. Really.

Yep Huxley.  Brave new world full of cowards.     and muzzies. and thugs. and pedophiles and genocidal globalists.   This world really has turned into a shithole and few stand against it's end.  I did however see this really swell fella this morning, ( while I was brushing my teeth)

koan's picture

Why not a future where there is no future, a total collapse of all we know.
These days, one man with a bit of knowledge and some equipment can effectively destroy the World (as we know it).
In every example above there was still order of a sort, lets have one with no order.

It will be interesting to prove my theory of the huge amount of strong, free blood that still exists in this country.

I think I get all 4 of those types in any given day... with probably a few more types not mentioned above.

What about the "Planet-of-the-Apes" dystopia?

Then, there is the easy to find Wellsian Eloi-Morlock type.

Of course, all of it is subsumed by the real-life Rothschild-Warburg-Rockefeller-Greenspan-Yellen Continuum where a little known bankster class imagines themselves as the Olympian gods playing on an Xbox with all our lives.

thebigunit's picture

Type 5:

"Rothschildian dystopia".

skunzie's picture

None of those for me, I live in blissful ignorance.  Actually life is great since I abandoned all hope!

thebigunit's picture

Dystopia overchoice if you ask me.

I can't decide.  Maybe it's because I don't speak or understand uniquack.

Economic implosion across the Western World will lead to the apocalypse which is not a dystopia when everyone ends up crispy critters from Thermonuclear Hot World War Three due to imploding superpowers that have run out of Ponzi schemes that Greater Fools will buy into. Run out of Greater Fools and the Ponzi is finished. That's where America is today. Fake News Ponzi schemes no longer provide yield. Fraud leads to no trust in the imprimatur governments offer investors. When the investor class develops mistrust of imprimaturs it is GAME OVER.

The answer is E: All of that shit.

You forgot the Hegelian Teleology, but that's alright. Oh, and the Nietzschian God is Dead meme. The Crowlean formulae for magic: Changing consciousness at will (but who's consciousness and who's will?). Also you forgot to mention Vatican 2, Lovecraftian Chthulu, Kant's categorical imperative, the fucking Frankfurt School, Yoda, Yoga, Starbucks, Pro Sports and Walmart.

Life is a living hell. The human race is doomed.

The 5th and worst type is that where politics is a topic all day every day. Agrarian life had to be better, you died when you got sick and you got the news once a month.

RevIdahoSpud3's picture

Gotcha There! For the last umpteen years I  have been reading/folowing the "news" latest developments and I'm finally hitting a wall. Read the first sentence or two of my four choices and none of them rang a bell. Frankly Scarlett I don't give a shit anymore.  What's most important is I have dug out my recurve bows from the 70's/80's and I'm getting back on point. All the calibres, reserves, garden seeds, stored gas etc is covered. Just need touching up on the bows. They're nice. They're quite and they stick an arrow deep. Qualifying myself according to some random asshole who gives me four choices is no longer of interest.

logicalman's picture

Just finished making my 11th bow - 4 broke, but all the rest will buy you dinner.

I make all the other stuff to go with as well - arrows, strings, finger tabs, arm protectors etc.

I know where meat runs around and how to get close.

George Orwell's views have had the most impact but Huxley came closest to describing our current modern, Western world. Interestingly, Orwell was of the view that Huxley had partly plagiarised a 1921 novel  by Russian Yevgeny Zamyatin -- called "We". Huxley denied there was any plagiarism. "We" is famous for being the first book banned by the new communist regime in the USSR. Zamyatin had to flee the USSR and died in poverty in Paris in 1937 at the age of 53.

Steven Spielberg announced in 2013 that his Amblin Entertainment was planning to bring BNW to the SyFy TV channel. Nothing's come of it ...maybe one of his pals in TPTB must have warned him that he was skating on thin ice by highlighting to the peasants how the world REALLY works.

Ridley Scott and DiCaprio also were interested in doing adaptations. Any version by Scott would be interesting but he has been too busy lately ...wasting time on crap like "Exodus: Gods and Kings"

BNW struck an unpleasant chord for me personally last year when the 20-something daughter of a close family friend came out as lesbian and announced she was having a baby boy by artifical insemination. The first I heard of it was when she sent out an invitation card to a party celebrating the boy's birth. The card was -- I kid you not -- themed on Brave New World (she is an English Lit teacher and likes the book but I think she's not really understood the book's messages). Talk about shoving our collective faces in it. Needless to say, I didn't attend. It's caused a rift between me and her parents. more kicker..her uncle is a catholic priest! How's that for  brave new world -- 21st century-style!!
