Russian Spy Ship Spotted Off US East Coast

Tyler Durden's picture

The last time a Russian spy ship was spotted in relative proximity to the US, was in September 2015, when shortly after five Chinese naval ships were observed in the Bering Sea, U.S. military satellites identified a Russian spy ship - capable of cutting undersea communications cables and other sensors - off the coast of Kings Bay, Ga., home to the U.S. Navy’s East Coast ballistic missile submarine fleet. Needless to say, the US navy - and Pentagon - were quite displeased: after all it is only Russia that is allowed to be surrounded by NATO forces.

Fast forward to today, when two US officials told Fox News that a Russian spy ship has been spotted patrolling off the East Coast of the United States on Tuesday morning, the first such patrol since President Trump took office. According to Fox News, the Russian spy ship was 70 miles off the coast of Delaware, heading north at 10 knots, according to one official. That location means the ship is in international waters. The U.S. territory line is 12 nautical miles. It was not immediately clear where the Russian spy ship was headed.

A Russian spy ship, Viktor Leonov SSV-175, is seen docked at a Havana port in 2014

The ship, the SSV-175 Viktor Leonov, last sailed near the U.S. in April 2015, an official said. The ship is capable of intercepting communications or signals, as well as measuring U.S. Navy sonar capability. The Russian spy ship is also armed with surface-to-air missiles.

“It’s not a huge concern, but we are keeping our eyes on it,” one official said.

This action by the Russian military follows recent missile test launches by Iran and North Korea.

During the Cold War, Russian intelligence gathering ships routinely parked off U.S. submarine bases along the East Coast and as noted above, in 2015, another Russian spy ship was spotted near the U.S. outside the submarine base in Kings Bay, in the most recent close encounter.

Outside of U.S. intelligence gathering satellites monitoring the Russian spy ship’s voyage north, there are several airborne platforms along the East Coast that could be used by the U.S. military to monitor the Russian ship, according to one official. Currently there are four U.S. Navy warships in the Atlantic off the coast of Norfolk participating in normal training, but none have been tasked with shadowing the Russian spy ship.

There are no U.S. Navy aircraft carriers nearby.

The USS Eisenhower, an aircraft carrier, is currently off the coast of Florida doing carrier qualifications, with young pilots making their first landings. Ike does not currently have strike aircraft.

It is certainly unclear (albeit sarcastic) if the ship has been dispatched in response to the resignation of Mike Flynn.

Everybody on the coast should just moon 'em.  I'm sure that's what the Russkies do to OUR spy ships off their shores.

Yup, we got mass spy devices around the world and in orbit.

Everybody spies on everybody.

Keyword here: International waters.

We drive our ships where ever the fuck we want all the time, so if we give them shit for this we're being hypocritical.

Tho i AM curious what they were doing, arn't we all?

I've heard a bunch of people say that the Trump administration is being torpedoed - maybe this is the culprit?

Nah - the Russians want Trump in office.  Self-inflicted wounds....

That article above about Flynn/Pizzagate/Hillary is interesting. No word from Sessions on her.

Maybe the pedophile cannibal Satanists really do run this country.

Is Fukushima the 'Wrath of God' to wipe them from the face of this Earth, along with all the rest of us? No amount of 'secret drugs'/baby parts is going to keep them alive any more than anyone else.

Go long hospice care, and short everything else.

Heading north at 10 knots? Not a problem, it's just trolling.

If all the skeletons came out of the US closet it would be epic on what our country has been doing.

'The USS Eisenhower, an aircraft carrier, is currently off the coast of Florida doing carrier qualifications, with young pilots making their first landings. Ike does not currently have strike aircraft.'

Hahahahahaha! 'Strike aircraft':

'Grounded: Nearly two-thirds of US Navy’s strike fighters can’t fly'

"The U.S. Navy’s F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet strike fighters are the tip of the spear, embodying most of the fierce striking power of the aircraft carrier strike group. But nearly two-thirds of the fleet’s strike fighters can’t fly — grounded because they’re either undergoing maintenance or simply waiting for parts or their turn in line on the aviation depot backlog.

Overall, more than half the Navy’s aircraft are grounded, most because there isn’t enough money to fix them.

Additionally, there isn’t enough money to fix the fleet’s ships, and the backlog of ships needing work continues to grow. Overhauls — “availabilities” in Navy parlance — are being canceled or deferred, and when ships do come in they need longer to refit. Every carrier overall for at least three years has run long, and some submarines are out of service for prolonged periods, as much as four years or more. One submarine, the Boise, has lost its diving certification and can’t operate pending shipyard work.

Leaders claim that if more money doesn’t become available, five more submarines will be in the same state by the end of this year.

The Navy can’t get money to move around service members and their families to change assignments, and about $440 million is needed to pay sailors. And the service claims 15 percent of its shore facilities are in failed condition — awaiting repair, replacement or demolition."

Trump wants to build hundreds of more boats, but we don't have the money to fix what we have. He wants more carriers, but we can't afford to fix the planes that would fly off a carrier, and any new planes don't fly. A combat-loaded F-35 can't launch off the new carriers because of defective/poorly designed catapault systems.

In the meantime, Russia and China carefully spend their military dollars/rubles/yuan on cheaper, faster, more lethal missiles that make our technologies obsolete against anything other than goat fuckers, and we're not very good at that, either. We certainly haven't 'won' anywhere since WWII.

So, all you old guys out there in ZH land, going to encourage your children to enlist and fight for the NWO? All Russia and China want is for us to dry up and blow away. They don't want to 'take over the US', we're all radioactive as fuck, thank you GE.

MachoMan's picture

We certainly haven't 'won' anywhere since WWII.

If by haven't won anywhere since WWII you mean haven't lost since the war of 1812 (and that was more of a solid trolling by england than a war proper), then you would be correct...

Is what they say true or complete bullshit to justify huge increases in military spending. If it's true they can blame the pols for doing worthless expensive wars in Iraq, Afgahnistan, Libya, Syria, the drone campaign, and the hundreds of bases and deployments around the world. In the process of turning Libya into a failed state almost every NATO participant ran out of bombs within days with the US coming to the rescue and supplying bombs from it's vast store. Not to mention the billions Obungler shoveled out to his "vetted" rebels in Syria.

Aw common. We spend our money more wisely. Our new combat ships are extremely fuel efficient and are virtually indestructable as we can't keep them running long enough to get away from the dock. The navy is very concerned about climate change and saving species as they buy bio jet fuel for $80 to $100 bucks a gallon for the planes that fly off $13 billion fish reefs after they get hit by a few cheap ass Chinese missiles. Just think how happy the fish will be when those biggies settle on the bottom.

When the Navy screams for more ships they spout the bullshit they they are needed to keep the sea lanes open. So where was the US Navy the first couple of years that ships were getting hijacked by dindues in rubber boats off the coast of Africa. "Patrolling" the peaceful Persian Gulf with multiple carrier groups flipping the bird at Iran. A total waste of time and ships while the sea lanes in multiple areas elsewhere were wide open to piracy and hijacking and still are. The Indians and Chinese had to patrol the area, with limited success as they did not have air support to cover large areas, while the protector of the seas was playing politics and making excuses.

Used to get followed on a regular basis by the Russians decades ago in the Pacific. They would pick up every bag of trash we threw off the tail end, sometimes miles of trash bags.

We would load up a few bags with Hustlers/Playboys and cigarettes and throw them over, too. We didn't want them to think all Americans were the devil.

Then one day some gay guy in Intel wanted out on a gay discharge - waay before it was OK to be gay in the military - and they wouldn't let him out. So he filled a trash bag with a pile of Top Secret files and notebooks and attempted to throw that over, too. Someone said something, and he got caught. He was helo'd off that afternoon never to be seen again, but after that every trash bag was opened before it was thrown off the fantail. I bet the Russians missed those mags and cigarettes more than they missed any real intel they might have gotten.

Asia was a lot of fun pre-AIDS.

A "spy ship"...LOL...that's fucking rediculous. It's a HUGE Fucking chunk of metal slowly traveling the ocean...there is nothing "spy" about it. If that's Russias' best "spy" device for the Oceans, THEY are in big fucking trouble.

I mean really, if you want to know the location of undergroung cables, just google it...if there's no results, just donate to the Clinton foundation or join the Mara-a-lago Country Club.

The Russians are playing this well. Their perceived military threat shows them as strong, while making America appear weaker playing off of Obama foolishness. They played the spoiler in the elections allowing the theme of interference to show them as strong, and now with the left's insistance that Trump is a Russian mole, their relative strength grows. If Russia wanted to strngthen Trump's hand politically, they sure as hell would not be running spy ships off our coast.

All of this plays into a theme that ultimately makes Russia look stronger and America weaker. Trumps willingness to play negotiator showed strength, but his inability to do so reverses on him making him look weak. The Loss of Flynn is definitely a loss of strength. Russia is loving this and playing it for all they are worth., but they best be careful fo if they are helpful in unseating Trump, they may well end up with a war on their hands.

Everyone is missing the proverbial boat on this one.  The Russian are heading to Delaware to enjoy Tax-Free shopping.  A few here mentioned it here already, in a world of spy satellites and russian mob organized crime, Vlad sends a rusty boat.  Yep.  More fake news.  But observe how desperate the swamp is to start a world war.  What's the score of this ballgame ?

Trump 2  (TPP, Repeal Obama Care)    Swamp  2  (Block travel ban, Mike Flynn fired)...

Yeah, and thir ambassador to the US rings up Flynn and asks a bunch of questions to sense what the new POTUS is inclined to do.

not dead yet's picture

Look for the left to spin this that Trumps secret decoder and transmitter ring his limited range and the Russian ship is there to give orders and collect all the US secrets Trump is sending them.
