There's A Difference: Fake News Or Junk News

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Charles Hugh-Smith via OfTwoMinds blog,

Media junkies on the tragic path to extinction believe the junk news, non-junkies see through the manipulation.

The mainstream media continues peddling its "fake news" narrative like a desperate pusher whose junkies are dying from his toxic dope. It's slowly dawning on the media-consuming public that the MSM is the primary purveyor of "fake news"-- self-referential narratives that support a blatantly slanted agenda with unsupported accusations and suitably anonymous sources.

Many of these Fake News Narratives are laughably, painfully bogus: that President Trump is a Russian tool, to take a current example. (That President Obama was a tool of the neocon Deep State--no mention of that. According to the MSM, America doesn't even have a Deep State--har-har...the joke's on you if you are credulous enough to swallow this risible absurdity.)

But the real danger isn't fake news--it's junk news. Junk News (the title of a 2009 book by an Emmy Award–winning journalist-- Junk News: The Failure of the Media in the 21st Century) --is related to Junk Science and Junk Food.

Junk science is presented as "science" but cherry-picks data to support a specific but unstated agenda--an agenda that requires downplaying or overlooking conflicting data.

One common example of junk science is the approval of new medications by the FDA. If you actually dig into Phase III data, you may well find that the "benefits" of the new wonder-drug are barely above statistical chance, and the potential interactions with commonly prescribed (or imbibed) drugs are ignored.

This is how we end up with medications with an unfortunate side-effect: death from misadventure, addiction, in combination with other commonly prescribed meds, etc.

(For more junk science, check out how meds going off-patent magically get FDA approval for additional --and immensely profitable-- patent protection.)

Junk food is now so ubiquitous we lose sight of its core qualities: it is "food" in the sense of being digestible, but it is harmful above very small, occasional doses. It is not "food" in the context of natural food or healthy food--in those contexts, "junk food" must be placed in parentheses because it doesn't qualify as "food."

It is empty calories, garbage that generates a host of chronic illnesses, but not "food" in the sense of being nutritious, life-supporting or healthy.

Junk news is like junk science--cherry-picked to support a corporate agenda--and like junk food in being digestible but toxic. As this brilliant essay explains, the unemployment rate is an premier example of junk news (and junk economics--a thriving subculture of junk science and junk news--just read any Paul Krugman spew for an example.)

Our Miserable 21st Century (Commentary Magazine)

An unemployment rate of 4.7% once meant full employment and rising wages for the laboring class--but alas, now it is just another ginned-up junk-econ/junk-news "statistic" designed to push a bogus narrative: everything is awesome (as the financial security of the bottom 80% swirls the drain).

I've updated my Ministry of Propaganda chart to reflect the rise of Junk News:

The key difference between fake news and junk news is plausibility: fake news is innuendo, anonymous sources, and risibly false accusations presented as "fact" (heh); junk news is, like junk science, supported by carefully cherry-picked "data" that has been selected to support the corporate-Deep State narrative being pushed by the corporate mainstream media.

Media junkies on the tragic path to extinction believe the junk news, non-junkies see through the manipulation. If you think it's "progressive" to support war-mongering, neoliberal exploitation and "support our values" social-justice distractions -- sorry, you're a junkie addicted to toxic smack. You're doomed if you can't get the corporate mainstream media monkey off your back.

If you're ready to kick your addiction to junk (i.e. corporate Deep State-approved) news, read this twice: Our Miserable 21st Century.

As in, "This fake news is junk.  Give me some real fake news."

"Real fake news?" Would that be like the "genuine copies" of Louis Vuitton bags that street merchants sell in southeast Asia?

If it's fake, I want to consume it. Cuz I'm a loyal patriot.

OT, but related to the fake news narrative:

How to Create White Racists:

1. Constantly and aggressively guilt White people, for things done by other White people, hundreds of years ago.

2. Shame White people for no other reason than how they were born.

3. Tell White people they have invisible privilege, and deserve nothing they've accomplished, even if they grew up in horrible conditions.

4. Reject any apologetic action, or attempt to "be better White people", as racist.

5. Tell White people they are bland, boring, and have no culture.

6. Tell White people they are racist for dating or marrying within their race.

7. Tell White people they have no right to advocate for their own interests, while everyone else does.

8. Call them racist for enjoying the company of their own race.

9. Call them racist for not having a crippling sense of self-loathing, or guilt for who they are.

10. Tell them they deserve to be minorities.

11. Tell them they have no right to defend themselves against non-White violence.

And finally, after you have done all of these things:

12. Tell them that they Do Not, and Can Not experience "racism".

Fake news is not fake because it contains no truth. It is fake news because it is not news, it is typically gross exaggerations fo minutia of bullshit that is irrelevant unless inflated to some sense of proportion. Those things of which the fake news media attributes to Trump are "facts" Trump misquotes or otherwise exaggerates that have no real importance beyond being able to label him as a liar. Being a liar is never good, but like all things there are degrees and relevances. Lying about 20% of the economy in passing an illicit healthcare plan, HAS to be worse than "lying about crowd size" doesn't it?

Introducing the public to the idea of "fake news" may have been a mistake.

If news can be fake, and history is just old news, history can be fake, too.

They acted without thinking of the long-term consequences of their actions. Mainstreaming and legitimizing the notion that an account of something can be fake may have been a mistake in the long run for our "elites." Imagine what the public might discover is fake!

Oy Vey! Shut it down!

Exactly. The decades of MSM slant are no accident.

At first they can use their decades of fake news to justify their "fact checking" second-wave propaganda.

Before too long, that fake news and fake fact-checking will be all there is of history. Especially in the digital age.

Watched a lecture by Joan Mellen on JFK and she noted that regardless of what is now overwhelming evidence of conspiracy to kill JFK and a public that knows it, the NYT refuses to print it.  That's real fake news that matters.  FU, NYT.

Seemed like a flip comment when I first read it.  Not laughing now.

The fake news bit really back-fired on them, and they over-played the Russian hand by a mile, and are still doing it. I was just talking to a hill-billy friend on mine who rarely comes out of the woods and he joked to keep my eyes open for Putin.

Most people know exactly who the swamp people are.

Amish Farmer Faces 68 Years in Prison for Making Natural Product

This is yet another reason why the Food and Drug Administration should be abolished.  A 56-year-old Amish farmer is now facing 68 years in federal prison because he made a natural health product.

Ignatius's picture

You don't understand, chunga, these Amish must be stopped at all costs, else clean living and good with God may spread.  Bad for big pharma profits.

The one good bit from fake news is everybody new the culprits and the game but now you can say it.

When they came out and started calling things fake news you created the circumvention of censorship etc. because I can call HRC a criminal how do you prosecute that ... is it fake or not. We all know what we think but the fake news concept made it expressable ... "oh sorry I must have made a mistake excuse as the MSM are practicing".

Or try you seen the fake news on Soros NGO's creating murder and mayhem makes me wonder if it is real. No offence in that statement but the message was delivered.

It's all fake I tell ya except the bits you want to believe - standard disclaimer now.

Excellent post!

I'm fairly successful at converting "Sleepwalkers", and getting them over to the 'right' side.

The secret is getting them to notice inconsistencies with the propaganda stream, which gets them questioning things on their own.

The System spends so much time devoted to fiction-peddling, that it's gotten pretty easy to get people to realize who the real enemy is, without having to go into deep or abstract concepts.

By trotting-out the "fake news" meme, they shot themselves in the foot. The trust people had in them is gone, and that genie won't be returning to its bottle.

You can almost smell the desperation on their parts, so we can probably expect a lot more craziness, more frequently, going forward.

Public resistence may simply be an intuitive understanding of Zappa's comment.  Survival instinct.

Obama's greatest trick was to pass himself off as a "progressive" while actually being a warmongering globalist.

Of course Obama was not alone in this trick, certainly the emdia was a major player in performing this trick.

We see now that Trump is doing a simular thing, playing the role of "man of the people" while doing the job of the olygarchs.

And of course the media is again in the middle of it all, playing their role as "anti-Trump", driving the right to support Trump...

One domino drops after another, some day hopefully Americans will get this is all just a game, we always lose the the powers that be always win.

I wonder if you read the recent executive order put through by Trump. It gives broad encouragement to the bureaucracy to address human trafficking, drug trafficking and other transnational crime, according to Catherine Austin Fitts.

I bet they wished they had never termed the concept fake news now.

When you deal in guns the worse thing to do is go around bragging you sell guns, ditto drug, money laundering, prostitution, child porn (that's for pizza) because people start looking at it and recognising it for what it is.

Can't hide the fakeness of propaganda now because it is all considered fake.

The seething liberal press just can't figure out how Trump won the election. Its the DEPLORABLES and there are millions of them. Keep pushing all this fake news nonsense and watch how many Dem Senators and Representatives flip to the Repubs in 2018 and 2020. Americans are pissed. Not the LBGTQ, the snowflakes, and the vocal minority. Its the people that go to work everyday and have to listen to the constant whining of this minority and there lapdogs in the press. Every grievance shoved into the faces of average Americans just trying to EEEK out a living. We are on to you. We know your tactics. You lost and will continue to lose with this strategy.

Don't know if It's helpful to make a distinction between fake news and junk news. Which box does News of the World and such checkout aisle stuff fit in? Do we need another category for that? MSM has become a byword, leave it at that.

The term "Fake News" was created by the left. They didn't want anyone using the term "Lying editorialized non-news propagandized media" that doesn't deserve the term "The Press"

I just wish "they" would stop referring to the corporate media as Main Stream Media. Each media corporation (of the six total) refers to the other five as MSM, insisting that they're the "real thing" and the rest are "fake". I think any news source that's owned by a corporation is "corporate media" RTTV (the best yet) is nevertheless owned by Russia, Inc. and therefore as likely as the other corporate media to exhibit bias in their reporting. The list goes on: PRESS,  CGTN, etc . You have to skip around to get the full picture, but you don't know what's true and what's not true at the end of it because you can't believe any of them. What would happen if Congress passd a law forbidding any corporate entity from owning a public news outlet? The owners would be liable for damages if their stories were found to be untrue. In some egregious cases lies causing damage could rise to the level of felony and result in jail time? Would that motivate journalists to take more responsibility? If stealing is a crime, why is lying to the public not a crime also? I understand the importance of a free press, but is it OK to yell Nuclear Winter on the Front Page??!! You couldn't enforce anything like that with the corporate monopolies (all six of them) tying up the courts with battalions of lawyers and billions of buck$ for ever and ever. But in a smaller, more responsive, de-centralized society??/? The way I see it, most all of the problems we have today are the result of corporate bureaucracy colluding with the minions of government bureaucracy to corrupt each other in a cozy little circle a thousand miles away from thee scene of the crime. How about a 28th Amendment to put a firewall between Corporations and State similar to the separation of Church and State? For the same reason- they corrupt each other.

decentralisedscrutinizer's picture

Why do Z-Hedgers refer to corporate bureaucrats as the "Elite" when their only claim to elevated status is their position within a fictitious entity? Getting a regular salary doesn't make a corporate manager any smarter than the average Main Street entrepreneur and many of them aren't that well paid. It's the corporations that hold all the power, not the bureaucrats that work for them. For sure, we need a shorter, easy-to-spell generic than "corporate bureaucrat'. "Corpocrat" sounds too governmental but "Crony" or "Lickspittle" might do nicely for the corporate elite. My experience indicates that the so-called "elite"  aren't really very intelligent outside the realm of their corporate specialty. (The study of Humanities is not the study of Human Resources). Rather boorish as the old-timers would say.
