Maine Drops 9,000 From Food Stamps After Refusal To Comply With Work Requirements

Tyler Durden's picture

Republican Governor Paul LePage dared to begin enforcing Maine's volunteer and work requirements for food stamp (SNAP) recipients to keep their benefits. The end result was more than 9,000 non-disabled adults getting dropped from the program.

As CNS News' Eric Schiener reports, a Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) spokesman tells the Associated Press that 12,000 non-disabled adults were in Maine’s SNAP program before Jan. 1 - a number that dropped to 2,680 by the end of March...

The rules prevent adults, who are not disabled and do not have dependents, from receiving food stamps for more than three months unless they work at least 20 hours a week, participate in a work-training program, or meet volunteer guidelines for 24 hours out of the month.

Any one of those three minimums getting met will result in an individual to retain their SNAP food benefits.

DHHS Commissioner Mary Mayhew said the goal of the requirements is to encourage people to find work.

"If you're on these programs it means you are living in poverty and so the more that we can help incentive people on that pathway to employment and self-sufficiency the better off they're going to be," Mayhew told the Associated Press.

In Maine, once someone loses their benefits, they cannot regain assistance for three years.

Patriot Chronicle points out, in Maine, 9,000 able-bodied people who are supposedly too poor to feed themselves couldn’t seem to handle that. In addition, those who lose their benefits in such a manner can’t reapply for assistance for three years.

Liberals have sold government dependence so deliberately well, that even doing 24 hours of approved volunteer work a month for a capable adult became too much for more than 9,000 people.

Either the Liberals have truly brain washed the voting masses into droning zombies, or they’re really not that needy for food.

Either way, the taxpayers who work hard for their paychecks, can feel some satisfaction at knowing they won’t have to support as much mediocrity as they used to.

As we noted previoulsy, thanks to many years of accelerated growth in the program under both George W. Bush and Barack Obama, 1 in 7 Americans now participate in the food stamp program.  There are, however, very large differences from state to state in how much the food stamp program has expanded. If we look at growth in the program from the year 2000 to 2015, we find growth varying from 641 percent growth in Nevada, to 54 percent growth in Wyoming:

Regionally, the areas of the country with the most growth are the South and West:

He tries appealing to the 'masses' by using words like 'Liberal' 'Leftist' Snowflakes' etc in every post, dumb-dumbs see this and think 'I use those words, they're really cool words to use now, I'll go and visit his site!'  Same reason he has a picture of Trump as his avatar.

As another ZHer has already pointed out, his site is full of adware that will infect your pc.

If Tyler is not going to do anything about him, we can 'Out' him ourselves until he fucks off, Philpat did a god job of 'outing' those idiot trolls that used to post messages and links to each other, I might start doing the same to Xythras, if I can be arsed!

Anyway, thanks for his e-mail address, I might sign him up for a free set of hearing aids, erectile disfunction pills and a few Nigerian Billionaires that need a safe place to keep their money.

Lol. They can't pull off 24 hours a month to eat for free? Fuck. I can swing that minimum in two days. Maybe not a fair comparison as I like dining out and good scotch.

Maine has a long way to go. I was a consultant for a firm that delt with a hospital in Lewiston back in the late 80s - early 90s. Quiet, working class town. Nice people. Same across the river in Auburn.

Now it's a shithole full of Somalis who are by and large on the dole.

Don't know if you have this in the States, but in Canada there are programs where welfare pays half the wages for an employer, to incentivize the work. At a construction site I worked at there were a lot of guys rumoured to be on pain pills and other hard drugs (wasn't really rumours since many bragged about it). You can guess where the employer was getting these people.

And you can probably guess the effects this corporate welfare has on other workers. I'd say it's played a major role in limiting union work for a lot of people.

HRH Feant's picture

Yes, we have that here. I was surprised when I noticed my landscaper had a mostly-white crew that spoke English. It seems he hires them while they are on work release from jail and, yes, the state pays him to hire them.

You can't make this shit up.

ebear's picture

I was in one of those programs!   Didn't realize it at the time though, but in fact it's the reason I ended up in the driver training program I mentioned upstream.

I thought I was being hired as an apprentice model builder and display artist for an architectural firm.  Turned out I was only there to cover a seasonal rush, so in effect my employer gamed the system.  Very disappointing, as I really took to the work and saw a possible career in it.  I did learn some stuff though, so there's that.

Skeero's picture

As much as I agree with you and agree with this.  It's going to look bad on Trump if other states do this. He's not going to claim responsibility of those jobs reports. He needs to start reminding people of over valued stocks, and the bullshit jobs report. I really wish I wasn't 26.. Oh well let's pop this bubble I'm ready to get back to shorting SPY.

Also I will never forget checking out in a gas station line, guy in front of me pulls out a large amount of cash.. Then fucking asks if they take EBT.. And then pays for it with EBT...

Maine is like 99.9% white. I dare them to try this in Illinois or Missouri. They can get away with it up there because the know nobody will call them racist. Republicans run from the light like a roach when a dem/msm lackey calls them a racist.

A year ago at my office where I work there was a receptionist who seemed very skilled and very personable. She would regularily not show up for work during any given month with excused absenses. It turned out she had to limit her monthly hours to make certain she still qualified for EBT and other gubamint hand outs... She was eventually fired.

Far too many people game the system......

The Canadian system is similarly corrupt.  Years ago, as a student, I did some practicuum work for a "workforce retraining" program that coached clients on all the ways to milk the system.  "What's that?  You've reached the end of your present Employment Assistance benefits?  No problem, we'll reclassify you as Person With Disability, and the gravy train continues."  It became accepted practice for thousands of so-called "clients" -- and then the provincial government went to the media and reported a drop in EA recipients (corresponding to the number that was reclassified)!  It was an important lesson about scum in government.

Social workers are among the worst parasites, because like lawyers and FAs, their job depends on the ability to pad their caseload.

ebear's picture

Man, what a contrast.

Back in the Stagflation 70's, about 3 months into my benefits, I got a call from UI (as it was known back then) asking if I wanted to take a course in truck driving.  40 bucks for an 8 hr/day 5 week comprehensive course with an A licence at the end?  Well, yeah.  Duh.

Never drawn a single benefit since.  Guys I took the course with I'd see on the road and wave, so I'm pretty sure it worked out for them as well.

I'll say this too.  The outfit the govt. hired to get us off the dole was First Rate.  One of the best courses I've ever taken, not just for the fact that they trained us well, but that they recognized the importance of instilling confidence, so we'd actually go out and do it, as opposed to going back on UI, which was not excluded in the deal.  Smart.

Hard to believe, isn't it?

Lore's picture

Some such programs are still very respectable, especially in technical training. Others -- not so much.

The coaching focus in my anecdote was on members of a 'minority group.'
