Colombian Drug King Worked for CIA, Says His Son

George Washington's picture

In a brand new book, the son of Medellín drug king Pablo Escobar says that his father worked for the CIA (English translation).

Sound crazy? Maybe …

But Time reports:

The U.S. government allowed the Mexican Sinaloa drug cartel to carry out its business unimpeded between 2000 and 2012 in exchange for information on rival cartels, an investigation by El Universal claims.

***

Dr. Edgardo Buscaglia, a senior research scholar in law and economics at Columbia University, says that the tactic has been previously used in Colombia, Cambodia, Thailand and Afghanistan.

“Of course, this modus operandi involves a violation of public international law, besides adding more fuel to the violence, violations of due process and of human rights,” he told El Universal.

Myles Frechette, a former U.S. ambassador to Colombia, said while that the problem of drug trafficking in Colombia persists, the tactic of secret agreements had managed to reduce it. The period when the relationship between the DEA and Sinaloa was supposed to have been the closest, between 2006 and 2012, saw a major surge of violence in Mexico, and was the time when the Sinaloa cartel rose significantly in prominence.

Business Insider writes:

There have long been allegations that Guzman, considered to be “the world’s most powerful drug trafficker,” coordinates with American authorities.

But the El Universal investigation is the first to publish court documents that include corroborating testimony from a DEA agent and a Justice Department official.

Fox News reports:

According to the motion, the deal was part of a ‘divide and conquer’ strategy, where the U.S. helped finance and arm the Sinaloa cartel, through Operation Fast and Furious, in exchange for information that allowed the D.E.A. and FBI to destroy and dismantle rival Mexican cartels.

***

“Under that agreement, the Sinaloa Cartel, through Loya, was to provide information accumulated by Mayo, Chapo, and others, against rival Mexican Drug Trafficking Organizations to the United States government. In return, the United States government agreed to dismiss the prosecution of the pending case against Loya, not to interfere with his drug trafficking activities and those of the Sinaloa Cartel, to not actively prosecute him, Chapo, Mayo, and the leadership of the Sinaloa Cartel, and to not apprehend them.”

***

The motion claims Mayo, Chapo and Zambada- Niebla routinely passed information through Loya to the D.E.A. that allowed it to make drug busts. In return, the U.S. helped the leaders evade Mexican police.

It says: “In addition, the defense has evidence that from time to time, the leadership of the Sinaloa Cartel was informed by agents of the DEA through Loya that United States government agents and/or Mexican authorities were conducting investigations near the home territories of cartel leaders so that the cartel leaders could take appropriate actions to evade investigators– even though the United States government had indictments, extradition requests, and rewards for the apprehension of Mayo, Chapo, and other alleged leaders, as well as Mr. Zambada-Niebla.”

Salon notes:

Under the remit of the War on Drugs, millions of U.S. citizens have faced arrest and jail time for minor, nonviolent charges. All the while, it has been revealed, the U.S. government has been enabling billions of dollars worth of drugs to flood into the country from Mexico because of shady deals with the notorious Sinaloa cartel.

***

Sinaloa (believed to supply 80 percent of Chicago’s street drugs) has been working with U.S. authorities since 2000 to provide information in return for immunity and undisturbed drug trafficking. Court documents obtained by El Universal show testimony from DEA and DOJ officials affirming the relationship.

Indeed, top U.S. government officials say that that the government has long PROTECTED drug cartels.

Watch the Following Videos, and Decide For Yourself …

From a 60 Minutes special with Mike Wallace reporting:

And see these short video clips:

And see this and this.

Even if you don’t believe that the agencies as a whole engaged in hanky panky, there were certainly rogue agents who did.

For example, agents for the Drug Enforcement Agency had dozens of sex parties with prostitutes hired by the drug cartels they were supposed to stop (they also received money, gifts and weapons from drug cartel members).

And Drug Enforcement agents also RAN New Jersey’s sleaziest strip club – using illegal, undocumented girls – which included a prostitution ring

Postscript: Interestingly, Nixon’s chief policy officer – John Ehrlichman – said that the war on drugs was launched as an excuse to attack the antiwar left and blacks.

Took a ride to Loas back in the laste 60's to a flat top mountain, rode on a load of ammo. When we got there, unloaded, we loaded brown  paper bags of a sticky brown tar substance and hauled it to Thailand and unloaded. We then came back with a load of what the pilot called "powdered sugar" and about 20 lbs.

About 7 years later I ran into the pilot, was amazed the shit he was doing he had not killed by then,he informed me we had hauled heroin back, things were going south now and into the cocaine thing. Met hime again in Houston a year or two later at a bar and in the process met a guy and old friend of his named Barry Seals. I heard all about the shit they were into then, heard later both were dead, Barry from a government double cross and my friend in a crash in a storm in Panama.

Those were some interesting times!

I'd be more surprised if they didn't sell drugs.

All excellent historical clips of CIA/US government involvement in the drug trade.  The last video about the Afghan poppy growing is misleading and should be considered propaganda.  The report says if the US cracked down on the poppy farmers, they would be mad at us and join the Taliban.  What they didn't say was that the Taliban are anti-drug, and for all intents and purposes eradicated the poppy fields when they were in power before the US attacked in 2001.  Saying these people would flock back to the Taliban is ludicrous.  It's propaganda designed to influence the American public into accepting what amounts to a pro-drug trafficking foreign policy.  They want to reap the profits of the drug trade, not stop it.  And there are big profits to made downstream in the war on drugs too.  The court systems, the attorneys, and the prisons all reap the rewards which are almost a certainty once you realize there is an ample, government-condoned, supply of drugs coming in.

Great article, but there is a mistake in the title as Escobar was Colombian, not Mexican.
Rest of the article reads fine other than that.

Oh and MF the gov.gov prickbags behind this shit throughout the years!

Because we all know the best way to combat heroin trafficking is to protect poppy fields and allow a 600% increase in yields.  It must be interesting to have a job where you can do anything you want.  Except blow the whistle of course.

It is interesting how we can send drones to a desert and surgically take out a "terrorist", but in the war on "drugs" we watch cartels in their haciendas come and go in their Mercedes Benz' and allow them to move their poison to our cities for decades.

Drug laws are poison to a free society. They are the tools of oppression.

Old Hippie Patriot's picture

The US, obviously a remarkably successful country for the first 112 years of its existence, had no drug laws until 1912. The concept called "liberty" negated any thought of regulating what people, of their own free will, ingest in their bodies. Drug laws are a government racket. Government uses the drug laws to oppress the people, like the British did to the people of China by addicting them to British opium. Legal drugs means that the price will collapse and drugs would cease to be racket of inflated prices and an overloaded justice system that denies the right of a speedy trial by jury to everyone. Drug laws are poison to a free society.

johnnycanuck's picture

The British used drug laws to oppress the Chinese people?  You might want to do a bit of research on that theory.  As I recall it was the abscence of any means of control which allowed the Brits to flood China with cheap opium, thus making the Chinese weak and easy to dictate to.

Nothing like crack-head criminals getting more drugs. A big secret the realtors don't want getting out is Prescott, Arizona is home to 150 half-way houses for addicts. Companies will buy a home in a residential neighborhood and move in six or eight addicts. There are no jobs in Prescott for all these guys so they resort back to using. While on crack, they do major crimes to get more $$ to buy crack. That screws up life for everyone else.

I am Libertarian when it comes to drug laws. I just think that if you screw up someone elses life by your own behavior, there ought to be a price for that. Same with drunk drivers. Lose your freedom forever on the second offense. Same with drugs. Screw up a second time and you get one free "big" dose of your choosing supplied by society. I am sick and tired of damaging innocent unaffiliated families in a misguided atempt to support the abuser rather than presenting consequences that say, "You kill someone while driving high, you have committed pre-meditated murder."

Our society thinks nothing about killing a rabid dog because of the threat to society. But a recitivist abuser gets multiple chances to screw up other peoples lives.

Sorry... I think they represent the same threat and ought to be dealt with the same way.

goober's picture

You could not be more wrong. The people who are so fucking weak and mentally fucked up that they use the drugs are the problem, not any bogus laws. That should be abundantly clear to any dumb ass American. It is in fact all about shit choices people make and we see the outcomes daily in a myriad of ways. It is just a giant scam as it exists with massive corruption. Our gov agencies are complicit in many crimes, nothing new at all.

You don't believe that they are all victims of a disease do you ?

Let's make a deal. Free markets and no usage restrictions for currently illegal drugs in return for maing is impossible for any government or health insurance company to spend a dime on drug-related health problems. Taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for others' stupid behavior. Indeed, it goes way beyond just drugs; no taxpayer money should be spent for any healthcare expenses, save for military veterans hurt while serving the country.

Think about how many stores carry Cheetos in America.

Then imagine someone telling you that Cheetos distributes their products under the radar, that they smuggle them across state lines into stores.

Sounds pretty fucking stupid right?

Now focus in thy brain center, and imagine the variety and amounts of illicit drugs you are able to buy in the immediate vicinity of stores that sell said Cheetos.

Then ask yourself: Asshole, is it moar likely that these drugs are being smuggled in, or that the federal gubmint is flying and shipping and even manufacturing massive loads of these drugs right here in America?
