Police Sharpshooter Accidentally Opens Fire At President Hollande Speech, Two Injured

Tyler Durden's picture

A police sharpshooter accidentally opened fire during a speech by French President Francis Hollande, injuring two people in the process, AP reported. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon in Villognon, Charente in western France where Hollande was preparing to reveal the LGV high speed rail line, when a shot was clearly heard in the background of event, prompting the French president to stop and look around concerned.

"I hope that wasn't serious," Hollande said nonchalantly after the loud shot rang out, before continuing with his speech at the unveiling of the LGV high speed rail line.

According to Soud Ouest, the weapon’s safety mechanism was not on when a security services agent, located on a nearby rooftop, accidentally fired.

Although it has been confirmed that two people were injured as a result, there are conflicting reports as to who they were. Initial reports suggested the agent shot himself in the leg, although it now seems a waiter and a member of the LGV maintenance crew both received leg injuries, according to L’Express.

Following his speech, which lasted around 20 minutes, Hollande is said to have met with the injured parties, both of whom were treated on site.

An investigation into the incident has been launched and a public prosecutor is expected to hold a press conference later on Tuesday, reports La Provence.

Didn’t Hollande say just the other day, “Here, we don't have people with guns opening fire on the crowd”?

Poor shmock, he just can’t catch a break. ;-)

And that's how good the French are with the firearm handling. What they NEED is a strong 2nd Amendment.

The French are just NOT good with guns. They need to continue to stay out of wars and conflicts. They are just not good at it.

Make Love Not War, Frenchie.

Well, at first his first impulse was to surrender when he saw a crowd of people... Then he just accidentally lashed out.

If I recall, Barney carried the one bullet Sheriff Taylor would issue him in his shirt pocket.

Something the French might consider. Remember that these are the guys who declared war on Greenpeace over nuke tests in the south Pacific, and lost....

France gets a bum rap re: guns, military, etc... France has contributed to firearm development more than almost any other nation. France got invaded in WW2, yeah... because all the men were DEAD already. But I do agree most of them are socialist weenies nowadays....

NidStyles's picture

You think France, a country with a larger population than Germany pre-WW2 lost the fight against Germany because they didn't have enough men?

You're either an idiot, or know nothing about WW2. France lost to Germany because they were simply outmaneuvered.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I guess getting all trained up to shoot people and never getting to shoot anyone gets pretty boring.

Ban Govt Guns...they kill more than any other and are now "accidentally" discharged.

Beat me to it.

That's some funny shit right there. Ya know, except for the wounded guys.

They'll probably get a lifetime "stress" pension so I guess it all works out.

All guns are loaded, and all guns have the safety off.

Never point a loaded gun at anything you do not intend to destroy.

Never pull the trigger on a gun unless you are destroying something or some one with legal justification.

With that simple rule set, nothing bad ever happens.

My dad would have beat the living shit outta this guy for Firearms Mortal Sin Number One.

Yeah right?....A French Sharpshooter? What did he do? Shoot himself in the back as he was running away? Like a Wild West Annie Oakley trick shooter utiilzing a mirror or something? Or maybe he plugged an errant mushroom with a slug of cheese? Uncomprehesible otherwise!

Do they make selfie sticks for firearms now? I dont know! ..so much gaity going in the World its hard to tell..The French claim to be trendsetters though..so thats why I'm asking...

There's no such thing as an accidental discharge of a firearm. Only negligent discharge.

New_Meat's picture

fortunately, it was le discharge negligee, so no one could have been hurt.

20 years ago the security details in France most likely had sharp shooters but I'm betting they just sat around, talked shit and smoked cigarettes. Today they are apparently locked, loaded, and nervous. Wonder what's changed?

I thoiught you didn't release your safety unless you were going to shoot?

thatthingcanfly's picture

It sounds to me as if he were fingering the trigger, thinking the safety was engaged.

It's for this reason I recommend NEVER engaging the safety on any firearms. I leave all mine with RED showing, and teach my kid to do the same. This eliminates the possibility of falling into the psychological trap of thinking that the firearm can't hurt me while doing something stupid with it - so long as I have the safety on.

Also, I try to buy guns (Sig Sauer, for example) that don't even have safety switches.

This is not an orthodox firearm safety practice. But I highly recommend it. If this French sharpshooter had followed my advice every day, this accident would likely never have happened.

shovelhead's picture

No safety, tip of finger on guard.

Jack's Raging Bile Duct's picture

Sig Sauer (at least some) have a safety. My 553 has one.

Handgun safeties go on when they head for the holster, come off as they leave the holster.

All long safeties stay off all the time.

It's always loaded and chambered until you check it, no matter when you last checked it. The safety is always off. Everything it's pointed at is irreplaceable and precious.

That said, I saw a brand new expensive pickup truck Saturday. It had a .300-size hole in the passenger door. An exit hole... No entrance hole on the other side.
