NY Times Outs White House Sources Who Provided Intel Reports To Nunes

Tyler Durden's picture

In the latest development surrounding last week's announcement by Devin Nunes, according to which President Trump and his associates were incidentally swept up in foreign surveillance by American spy agencies, the NYT reports that the pair of White House officials who played a role in providing Nunes with the intelligence reports behind his claim, have been identified.

The NYT has outed the Nunes sources, who it claims are Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the senior director for intelligence at the National Security Council, and Michael Ellis, a lawyer who works on national security issues at the White House Counsel’s Office and formerly worked on the staff of the House Intelligence Committee.

As reported previously, Nunes had refused to identify his sources, saying he needed to protect them so others would feel safe coming to the committee with sensitive information. He first disclosed the existence of the intelligence reports on March 22, and in his public comments he has described his sources as whistle-blowers trying to expose wrongdoing at great risk to themselves.

Amusingly, the NYT adds that "the officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the intelligence, and to avoid angering Mr. Cohen-Watnick and Mr. Ellis."

In other words, the US has devolved to the point where one set of anonymous sources is doxxing another set of anonymous sources in the pursuit of a political agenda.

Cohen-Watnick is a former Defense Intelligence Agency official who was originally brought to the White House by Michael T. Flynn, the former national security adviser. The officials said that earlier this month, shortly after Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter about being wiretapped on the orders of President Barack Obama, Mr. Cohen-Watnick began reviewing highly classified reports detailing the intercepted communications of foreign officials.

Some further background on Cohen-Watnick from forward.com:

President Donald Trump reportedly overruled a decision by National Security Adviser Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster in order to keep a Jewish National Security Council aide in his current position. Trump overruled the decision on Sunday after Cohen-Watnick, 30, appealed to White House advisers Stephen Bannon and Jared Kushner, Trump’s Jewish son-in-law, Politico reported

McMaster had told Ezra Cohen-Watnick, senior director for intelligence programs at the NSC, that he would be moved to a different position at the NSC after CIA officials had pushed for his ouster, according to Politico.

A Washington consultant told Politico that Cohen-Watnick and Flynn “saw eye to eye about the failings of the CIA human intelligence operations,” and that the “CIA saw him as a threat, so they tried to unseat him and replace him with an agency loyalist.

Additionally, the NYT adds, that the intel reports consisted primarily of ambassadors and other foreign officials talking about how they were trying to develop contacts within Mr. Trump’s family and inner circle in advance of his inauguration.

Cohen-Watnick has allegedly been reviewing the reports from his fourth-floor office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, where the National Security Counsel is based.

Perhaps more importantly, the NYT sources say the description of the intelligence is in line with Mr. Nunes’s own characterization of the material, which he has said was not related to the Russia investigations when he first disclosed its existence in a hastily arranged news conference on March 22.

It was not immediately clear if now that the identity of the Nunes sources has been revealed, whether Nunes will make the contents of the confidential documents public.

Funny they could find the "source" in the Trump whitehose, but not the DNC.

The Guy Who Wrote Clinton Cash

On Thursday’s Breitbart News Daily, guest Peter Schweizer talked about President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and his role in the controversy over meetings between Trump transition team members and various foreign interests.

On Wednesday, Kushner Cos. and the Anbang Insurance Group of China reportedly agreed to end talks about securing investment in an office tower on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The deal had been criticized as an effort by the Chinese to win favor with the Trump administration.

“The biggest concern that I’ve had is whether Jared Kushner, whether it’s the president’s sons who are running the real estate business, that they are going to be offered or they are going to seek out sweetheart deals with foreign government entities – Chinese, Russian, Kazakhstan, you name it,” Schweizer told SiriusXM host Alex Marlow.

“That’s where the vulnerability is, because they will make a killing financially, and a foreign entity will then gain leverage or favors from the Trump administration,” he said.

“These things are very worrisome. Again, there’s no deals that seem to have been sealed, and there’s no evidence that there have been financial transfers,” he noted. “But this needs to be monitored – and monitored, I think, with great intensity because this has been a repeated pattern in American politics.”

I saw it day one where the Princess (Prin) and Jared were in on the Japanese meeting at Trump Tower.

Wonder what they will invent next to attack the Trumpster

I have this from a reliable source who I cannot name at this time (he is NOT the Nigerian oil prince who I am doing business with at the moment) that Trump entered into talks with alien life forms who wish to build  space ports on the back nine of a number of Trump's golf courses.  The use of these space ports is highly controversal  to national security.

Let's parse a piece of the information provided in your link: "Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said Thursday the material the White House wants the House and Senate intelligence leaders to view was discovered by the National Security Council through the course of regular business."

So the information did not come from "White House aides", it came from someone at the National Security Council, which happens to be located in the Executives Offices of the White House. This fact might be the reason that Nunes had to go to "the White House" to view the material. The information is likely highly classified and can only be viewed in a secure compartmentalized information facility (SCIF), and could be in a format that can not be removed from the SCIF, ....say, perhaps, the archived copies of the Presidential Daily Briefings from the Obama administration. This would also explain why Nunes could not take a copy of the information back to the full House Intelligence Committee to review, because the source information cannot be removed from the SCIF and because of the committee members only Nunes and Schiff have security clearances high enough to allow them to see information at that classification level.

Art Van Delay's picture

I didn't get to watch the entire Press Briefing but isn't Sean Spicer shading light on the matter?

Shouldn't the info you're referring come from that video our friend XY shared with us in the above link.

I might have to get back to watch it in full, but damn those press briefing can be long.

But at least they are more entertaining that those of Odumbo

RE:  Spammer    Audio Feline ( comment above), blue fin, TrollAndDump, XYTHRAS, etc. ect. (the same person):

You have NO IDEA how troubled this individual, the Spammer With One Hundred Log-ons, really is.  He has trolled and spammed his website crap on here forever, always with the same macabre conversations with a long series of "imaginary playmates." It really is quite perverse and whoever "he" is, he seems to really get his rocks off voting himself up arrows and replying to his own comments, and also appears to have no life beyond making off-topic comments with his link to the SPAM-, TROJAN-, VIRUS-INFESTED  ""dailywesterner, com""

Other ZHers  may wish to take one minute to send an email to abuse@zerohedge.com requesting that all of the "imaginary friends" (in the list below; copy and paste)   be permanently banned for spamming.

As you do that, use your imagination to try to conceive of what type of whackadoo would spend their life in fishnet stockings (hairy legs) and stilletto heels, heart racing, eating stale chips and drinking cheap soda from the dollar store, popping zits, and spamming zerohedge.

Many of the following have been banned but, like crabs and cockroaches, they just seem to come back.  The "short list of imaginary playmates" includes:

Audio Feeline

Body: Hi,

Thank you for removing the spamming user Xythras, who was spamming the dailywesterner.com web site on every article that appeared.

There's a new account (others on ZH have mentioned that Xythras has many accounts, used to vote up his spam advertisement comments), "Audio Feeline", which you can see spam from here: http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-03-30/ny-times-outs-white-house-sourc...

Appreciate the help in addressing the signal-to-noise ratio.

I'm sure I read from some authoritative site somewhere that the "NYT couldn't find their ass with both hands". So now it appears they did indeed find it, wrapped around their heads.

chubbar's picture

NYT jumping through its ass to find these sources, couldn't care less about whether it's true that Obama surveilled Trump. Look for these assholes to try and find a law that was broken by the WH in uncovering this crime. They are completely insane. This crime is watergate on steroids and there "should" be multiple folks going to jail, including that asshat on MSNBC that essentially admitted to the world that she was viewing top secret transcripts going to the Obama team while holding a job with the Clinton campaign. Is the NYT's doing fuck all with THAT story? Of course not, that is only the FUCKING SMOKING GUN in this whole debacle but those retards would rather spend their time tracking down these leakers, fuck those assholes in the NYTs and the rest of the corrupt MSM.

They are writing to their audience.  Ethos and Pathos...remember rhetoric?  Your Audience and your Message.  They are crafting the message to sell the most papers to their audience, which is NY left wingers.  If the NYT wrote like Breitbart they's be broke sooner than their current path is taking them.  Its all tripe for people who have closed minds and need validation for their twisted way of thinking.  Its actually sad and a bit dangerous.

shivura's picture

why again do you care more about intelligence leaks than Russian/Trump collusion? bc your GOP overlords told you to? try to actually answer that question Einstein and an acceptable answer is "I don't care if Trump makes deals to benefit himself with foreign leaders I want him to be president". after you answer that ask yourself what else he could do and you would still be sucking his dick...now you know how dictators rise to power bc the powerless power hungry immoral selfisishts just want someone that will kill who they hate...

Yep, only fit for birdbrains.
True that...that media outlets now have to tailor their "news" to satisfy their audience. As traditional media becomes more and more desperate to hang on to paying customers this will become the norm.
No longer is "the media is the message"...its now "the (paying paywall) audience is the message".
