Trump Statement On Syria Air Strikes

Tyler Durden's picture

Shortly after he concluded his dinner with Xi Jinping at Mar-A-Lago, Trump authorized the airstrike against Syria in which at least 60 cruise missiles were launched, and delivered the following brief statement:

My fellow Americans, on Tuesday Syrian dictator Bashar al Assad launched a horrible chemical weapons attack on innocent civilians. using a deadly nerve agent, Assad choked out the lives of helpless men, women and children.

It was a slow and brutal death for so many, even beautiful babies were cruelly murdered in this very barbaric attack. No child of God should ever suffer such horror.

Tonight I ordered a targeted military strike on the airfield in Syria from where the chemical attack was launched. It is in this vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons.

There can be no dispute that Syria used banned chemical weapons violated its obligations under the chemical weapons convention and ignored the urging of the UN Security Council.

Years of previous attempts at changing Assad's behavior have all failed and failed very dramatically. As a result the refugee crisis continues to deepen and the region continues to destabilize threatening the United States and its allies.

Tonight I call on all civilized nations to join us in seeking to end the slaughter and bloodshed in Syria. And also to end terrorism of all kinds and all types.

We ask for God's wisdom as we face the challenge of our very troubled world. We pray for the lives of the wounded and for the souls of those who have passed and we hope that as long as american stands for justice then peace and harmony will in the end prevail. Goodnight and God bless America and the entire world. Thank you.

And what is so vital and strategic about Syria with regards to the USA? Nothing is the answer, unless you're a shill for Israel and Saudi Arabia...

Using Fake News to justify his actions. Fake president. Sad.

60 cruise missles for 1 airfield?

Blankone's picture

It was a message to Putin.

Archduke's picture

Not really, or not only: it was a message to Xi Jin Ping.

Also signalling to the American public and world at large.

Recall the Russians (and possibly through them Syrians) were given due warning and had time to vacate the premises, save their planes. So it's an escalation in tone and sabre rattling, not so much as in violence.

Recall the month started with a stern warning to China about North Korea (Sort it out or we will). Note the Chinese Premier wass at Mar-a-Lago for talks.

Want to take bets that Trump said to him: watch this, see what we can do if you are recalcitrant.

Everything from the chem gas attack on to the tomahawk launches is just a show of force to cow the yellow peril.

It says we can stage the pretext, script the media narrative, fire at will, and do so with total impunity.

It simultaneously nixes the Russian gains on the ground and ups the ante in China, Korea, Iran.

It also signals strength to the electorate to paliate his ridicule emasculated image. And finally It says, that the agenda is back to military complex normalcy.

really it's just a case of pulling out his willy.

and a good dose of gunboat diplomacy.

casualties be damned.

truth especially.

Gotta prove you're a 'tough guy' and not in bed with the Russkies.

I wonder if Hitlery woulda launched this soon after the inauguration

She would have done it yesterday...

You may be onto something. The target as described doesn't seem sufficient to justify 60 cruise missiles. This action was undertaken for a different reason than the one being fed to the public. I'd like to think that Trump is still 'playing along' and doesn't actually believe the BS.

Buckaroo Banzai's picture

Well this is interesting. According to the Russians, 36 of the Tomahawk missiles "missed" the airfield. Or, more likely, were never aimed at the airfield in the first place.

Did Trump use this attack on the airfield as a smokescreen to attack other targets in Syria?

"On April 7, 2017, between 3:42am and 3:56am Moscow time, two US Navy destroyers (USS Porter and USS Ross) fired 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Shayrat airfield in Homs Province, Syria, from an area near the Island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea.

“According to our sources, only 23 of them reached the Syrian airbase,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov said, adding that the points of impact of the other 36 cruise missiles remain unknown.

there was no reason for assad to gas syrians as he was winning on all fronts and gas is not a good tactical weapon.

every one of the gas attacks in the past several years was done by one of the poisonous flavors of al quaeda, proving they can make and deploy this gas.

every time the neocons are in dutch, they send in john mccain, to rally their-off-the-books soldiers (mentioned above).

that trump doesn't know this, or doesn't want to know this is appalling.

Can't get rid of Obamacare, can't block refugees from coming in, can't lower taxes... so just start war with Russia by bombing Syria to kill more people because Syria use gas instead of bomb?

After Ron Pauls treatment leading up to the 2008 election, I swore I'd never vote for another republican. I broke that by voting for trump. This was clearly a mistake. He just lost my vote in 2020. No, I'm not voiting for the dem, but I am staying home. For some stupid reason, I thought he was different, but I was wrong. Going back to being a non voter.

2020? There won't be a USA left in 2020. Assuming this isn't some sort of massive troll/100000D Go divine move.

None to blame other than yourselves tmosley,

The time to act was in 2008, that's when you should picked up your guns and made things right. One way or the other, you're all fucked now.

I voted for Trump, and now, I cannot stand his orange-lying-face. Disgusting!

What is the next US war? With NK, China, or Russia? Now, it became obvious this US war escalation just started.

Ms No's picture

For the longest time every time I heard the name Trump somewhere I thought "Trumpoassclown" like Masters of the Universe called him.  It just got stuck in my head.  That was a pretty good name for him.

Billy the Poet's picture

This was clearly a mistake.

For me it was never about support for Trump but support for the people who supported Trump. Walk with the good folks who are still learning how the system is rigged and you'll be in a position to offer them other solutions as they begin to open up to new possibilities.

There's also an interesting dynamic in play here. Trump is likely hoping for a popularity boost as usually happens in war time but in this case Trump can never hope to gain the support of purple revolutionaries and he's also risking a big part of his not particularly solid base. It would be refreshing to see a President lose popularity for warmongering for a change.

greenskeeper carl's picture

Yep, this will have the opposite effect. There is a substantial % of the country that will forever be screaming "muh russian hacking" and, with some overlap, the purple revolutionaries, as you say, will neve support him. There exists, however, a substantial number of people who voted for him for the explicit purpose of preventing something like this from happening. He probably lost a million votes with this. One of them being mine. I'm not naive enough to think my 'vote' counts for anything, but when you take into account the millions of people who are fed up with us being bled dry, both literally and financially, with the nonsense overseas, he just lost some critical swing states. I'l go back to not voting

Billy the Poet's picture

Don't beat yourself up over this too much. We were offered Hillary or Jeb! and the people said, "Give us the clown!" And then we were offered Bernie or Cruz or Kasich and the people said "Give us the clown!"

2016 was not a normal election and it wasn't really about the candidates themselves. It was about lines forming on the left and the right. The fact that people like you and many others are willing to speak out against your own candidate's faults proves that you picked the right side. The Obama drones never had the integrity to speak out against Obama's wars or even notice them for that matter.
