ISIS Attacks US-Led Base In Southern Syria, As Assad Said To Use White Phosphorus

Tyler Durden's picture

With the US now engaged in military conflict with, and targeting Syrian army forces, what the Trump administration has (un)wittingly done is provide support to Islamic State, al-Qaeda, and al-Nusra and other terrorist forces, all of which have been engaging with the Assad regime in a fight in which the Syrian president has gradually seen the tide of war turn in his favor. At least until last Friday's US cruise missile attack that is.

Which is why it should probably come as no surprise that, emboldened by US actions, moments ago the WSJ reported that Islamic State militants attacked a US-led coalition base (at least we now have official confirmation that there are US military bases in Syria) in southern Syria on Saturday, "triggering a fierce fight that required coalition airstrikes to repel, U.S. military officials said Sunday."

The complex attack began on Saturday when Islamic State fighters detonated a vehicle bomb at a base in al-Tanf, a town in southern Syria along the Jordan border used by American special operation forces and Syrian rebels working with the U.S. coalition, the officials said.

Between 20 and 30 Islamic State fighters, including some with suicide vests, then attacked the base, which is a staging ground and training facility for the U.S.-backed Syrian rebels.

As the WSJ adds, Coalition forces and Syrian rebels engaged in firefights with the attackers and then called in airstrikes to repel the attack, officials said.

Luckily, there was no word of any American fatalities in the attack, although next time the US forces on the ground may not be so lucky, and the resulting media storm would prompt a full reappraisal of Trump's action which by weakening Assad implicitly and directly is boosting the relative strength of the Islamic State.

The Islamic State attack comes as the U.S. military is deepening its presence in Syria as part of an intensifying campaign to drive the extremist group from its de facto capital in Raqqa. For weeks, the U.S. military has been strengthening its presence along the Jordan-Syria border, according to U.S. and Jordanian officials.

* * *

Meanwhile, confirming that the US is not nearly close done bombing Assad, on Sunday the Qatar-owned (the country which at long last hopes to have its gas pipeline cross Syria to Europe) Al Jazeera, reported that Syrian jets have bombed the town of Idlib using White Phosphorus.

One almost wonders what must have gone through the head of the Al Jazeera producers when told to report on such a story.

One thing we can imagine, however, is sequence of thoughts inside Assad's head: "Well, I just got bombed by the US and I will surely get bombed even more at even the slightest additional provocation that can be splashed across the front pages of western newspaper. So... yes, brilliant idea - I will use a banned, toxic substance - White Phosphorus - and hope it appears on all media channels around the developed world, just to make sure the next US airstrike aims right for my palace."

Sure, why not.

Expect to hear much more about white phosphorus in the coming days: it will be the "catalyst" for the next round of Syrian airstrikes.

Gee whizz, we have a base along the Syrian-Jordanian border! Who knew?

So, Daesh took the willie pete McCain gave them and attacked a heretofore unknown US base? What rascals!

Doesn't look like it to me. Are you getting your information from CNN?

It is unquestionable that the United States’ military power is dominant, but just as an illustration, consider these numbers:

Military Spending

Russia’s military budget at $67 billion is tiny, compared to the United States’ $594 billion (bigger than the military budget of the next nine countries with largest military budgets combined).

Active Military Personnel

The United States has 1,492,200 military personnel vs. Russia’s 845,000.

Military Bases

There are around 800 U.S. bases in 80 foreign countries, with 174 U.S. “base sites” in Germany alone.  As of 2016, Russia has 12 military bases outside of its border: 10 of them on the territory of the former Soviet Union, in close proximity to Russia’s borders, two others in Syria and Vietnam

Is this chapter one of a spy novel you are writing?

francis scott falseflag's picture

I have no intention of taking this announcement by the DoD as anything else than propaganda,

pure  and simple.  No more believable than the 'oops-we-made-a-mistake' deceit when the US

coalition attacked a company of Syrian soldiers.  Or when they weaseled out of killing 200+

Syrian civilians by saying ISIS had herded them into a building they attacked.  Or when they

destroyed a MSF hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan, first saying the Afghanis called in the

strike and after two more pathetic excuses, blaming it on the crew of the plane.

What's up with this recent attack by ISIS?  Well first, did it actually happen?  There probably

weren't any bullshit artists from SOHR there or White Helmets to swear to that fact.

So unless the Russians confirm this fire fight really happened , this make-believe skirmish

was just the Pentagon saying: "Oh look.  They attacked us too. If we created them, they

wouldn't dare do that"  "There's no business like show business."

Thus Trump finally proved that the CIA did not organize ISIS

you are free to do whatever your little heart desires. Ringside seat to all the fun in Syria wouldn't miss it for a minute.

Surely you have heard of the saying all's fair in love and war now you know first hand what that quaint phrase means.

francis scott falseflag's picture

The bottom line is that Russia/Syria and the US/Coalition

are playing by two different sets of rules.

Russian media is aware of that.  Western media pretends they are not.

Another reason for this to end badly and bigly.  :o/

As you hear more and more about white phosphorus, keep in mind that even the UN allows it as a smoke screen. So mainstream news may tell you it was used to burn people in cases where it was really used for smoke. Or they may just leave it up to you to incorrectly conclude that white phosphorus is always intended to burn people. Also bear in mind that Israel has a long history of using it to burn people while claiming it was for smoke. "We were trying to run away and we needed a smokescreen". Broken record.

Friend from UK on FaceFuck has a good supplemental statement on the whole gas attack thing:

The #Guardian has been leading the UK media effort to demonize the Syrian state and military. On the day of the alleged Idlib attack, Raed Saleh, "extremist connected", leader of the #WhiteHelmets, UK created Al Qaeda civil defence, wrote an article in English calling for further intervention. He doesnt speak English...and how was the article written on the DAY of the alleged attack? It was pre-fabricated.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/apr/04/syria-assad-white-helmets-torture-eu-prosecute

Sarin used, suggests @guardian. Yet a rescuer tells its reporter "we could smell it 500m away".

SARIN HAS NO SMELL. Thank you @ShoebridgeC

The Guardian then ran a series of articles amplifying the "Assad did it" narrative without any credible evidence or official investigation. They included an article by so called British-CW-expert, Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, calling for the ubiquitous "safe zones" ie partitioning and US mission creep.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/apr/07/missiles-plan-syrian-safe-zones-donald-trump

The final report in the series, so far, came from Kareem Shaheen, who visited Khan Sheikhoun. However, what the Guardian failed to mention is that Shaheen entered Syria illegally, via Turkey and was allowed to enter Al Qaeda controlled areas via the Turkish border, apparently without risk. One must ask why, when other journalists have been kidnapped or executed. Yet again we see media working in lock-step with terrorism to facilitate "regime change" and further destroy Syria.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/06/the-dead-were-wherever-you-looked-inside-syrian-town-after-chemical-attack

Khan Sheikhoun is an Al Qaeda and extremist groups nest. The White Helmet centre here is run by Mustafa al Haj Yussef, a known sectarian, ethnic cleansing-supporting, terrorist affiliate who has called for the shelling of civilians in Damascus, the execution of Prisoners of War and the unity of ISIS, Nusra Front, Ahrar al Sham and other extremist factions to "overthrow" President Assad. Yet again, we are taking the word of a self proclaimed terrorist to further punish the Syrian people for resisting neocolonialism.

Article on Khan Sheikhoun White Helmet leader:http://21stcenturywire.com/2016/12/10/exclusive-president-raed-salehs-terrorist-connections-within-white-helmet-leadership/

Every one of these journalists should be prosecuted for enabling conflict, supporting terrorism, under the UK Anti Terrorism Act, and potential war crimes.

The Guardian is a ruse. They pose as leftist hipsters but all roads lead to the NWO.

Its useless as a news source but is perhaps the purest rendition of the Globalist propaganda narrative.

I can't understand how any educated person can take it seriously. That being said, it is fun to troll over in their forums. They are so easy to trigger. Like shooting fish in a barrel.

Liberal use of the term 'coalition forces' needs to be further clarified when it comes to the battles in Syria.  We know there is the Coalition of Courage (Russia-Syria-Iran) and we know there is the clandestine, illegal Coalition of Clowns, headed up by the USA and Syrian Terrorists and whatever anti-government street gangs have joined in the fight.  But this now raises an interesting question....if America is going to willy-nilly bomb the Courage, and ISIS is going to attack the Clowns should not Russia and other be encouraged to slide some ordnance into the hands of ISIS?  Or how about, in a public relations move - ISIS overruns one of the Syrian Terrorist bases and shoots some video of the same Sarin gas the Terrorists used to punk both Trump and the American people.
