Trump Backtracks; Confirms We "Have To Do Healthcare Before Tax Reform"

Tyler Durden's picture

Back in late March, equity markets sold off on the first signs that Republicans were not going to be able to repeal and replace Obamacare as they had promised.  Alas, the pessimism didn't last long as the BTFD crowd was able to quickly convince everyone that the failure of Obamacare was actually good for markets as it would allow the Trump administration to focus it's efforts on tax cuts instead...and, as usual, equities soared.

That said, per Trump's latest interview with Maria Bartiromo of Fox Business which aired earlier this morning, the BTFD strategists may have to find another catalyst for the next dip as Trump confirmed that healthcare has to get done before tax reform and infrastructure:

Trump:  “I think we’re going very well with healthcare.  And after that, we’re going to start on tax reform and infrastructure.”

Not satisfied with Trump's subtle suggestion that healthcare would have to precede tax reform, Bartiromo pressed further....

Bartiromo:  "But, do you have to do healthcare before tax reform?  When I speak with business managers they say tax reform is so much more impactful to moving the needle on economic growth." which point, she got a very clear answer: "Yes."

Trump:  “Yes.  They’re all right. But because I’m saving a tremendous amount, hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars we’re saving on healthcare.  So we’re going to have a much better plan than ObamaCare, which is failing.”

“So we’re saving tremendous amounts of money on health care when we get this done, number one. And most importantly, actually we’re going to have great healthcare. And all of that saving goes into the tax. If you don’t do that, you can’t put any of the savings into the tax cuts.”

We're currently awaiting confirmation as to why delaying tax reform and spending more time on healthcare is positive for equities...we expect to have an answer by this afternoon at the latest.

Wait, I thought the plan last week was to let ObamaCare implode, blame it on the Dems, and then swoop in for the save? Or did just wake up this morning and suddenly remember he can't do BIGLY tax reform without passing his shit sandwich of a health insurance bill first?

The government is not a charity.

I just "saved" taxpayers trillions of dollars.

Of course, politicians will need to find another way to get votes other than buying them with our money.

Must I do all of the thinking around here?

I am not a techy guy so I am probably oversimplifying this, but it would be great if tylers could block all users and posts who link to dailywesterner, com or shepwave, com.  They just clog the thread with their multi-user schizoid convos.

Bay of Pigs's picture

I'm sure I speak for most here when I say my patience is wearing thin with these serial spamming fuckheads derailing every thread.

Why are the Tylers allowing this to continue?

I think the Tyler's ran off with the loot. This thing is fairly much on auto pilot, and set up for automatic revenue generation by parties unknown. Of course I may be entirely wrong on this, so we ask in the name of all that was once sacred and holy, show us a sign lord, (or Tylers) we'll take either one ...

Trump could fix healthcare tomorrow.  But he wont because the house of cards will topple. He doesn't need any shit passed either. Enforce the law Donnie boy.

Denninger has been all over this. Nothing more than enforcin anti-trust laws is required.

But Orange Jesus will have to have some fake numbers to throw out on how much they will save (lol) before he can cut taxes. And of course, our debt will continue to rise at an exponentially increasing rate.

The collapse cannot be put off anymore. So the War Party is being given control.

Giant Meteor's picture

Ahhh yes, anti-trust laws, I remember them. Enforce the law.

Funny how all that worked out. The little guy's and gals have many laws enforced upon them, day in, and day out. But that other special class, that well connected and priviledged class, why not so much ..

Living in a land of tyranny? You bet your ass.

Healthcare replacement can't happen until Obamacare fails on its own. A crisis is needed first. Watch unemployment. If it spikes the ACA fails. All those people will instantly sign up for and get free healthcare which will bankrupt the providers.

Sometimes it appears there IS a free lunch, but even when it appears to be "free" it's never really free. Something is either offered or given up in return .. Sometimes what is given up, is one's very own soul. The Faustian bargain.

It's been my experience, and I do not believe that I am unique, there is always, generally speaking, a price to be paid, inverse to what is received, better, worse, large, small, good, bad, indifferent. The trouble is, sometimes we may not know what that price is, even when we THINK we know .. and of course whenever the price has come due, slowly at first, then all at once.

It is somewhat like the old expression, "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it." Having of course experienced this phenomenon, first hand, it can of course, be instructive, as well as sobering, IF the lesson is learned, and applied.

Otherwise, it's pretty much ground hog day, every day, and goes on and on and on .. until of course it doesn't.

That is where the real sobering comes in, or perhaps die not trying .. (hopelessness)

Your point in the essay, yes, government (in theory) "we the people" created the monster that enslaves mankind, and keeps mankind in this perpetual state (for many) of confusion (for many) of learned helplessness.

Now of course, once a young man or woman, reaches the age of reason, and consent, the blame game "should" have ceased, and desisted, along with other fairytales of existence ....and of course we know we are far, far, far from that ideal, in theory or in practice, which is another symptom of a dying culture ...

I'm afraid it's going to have to be pain, a great deal of pain, to right this ship, if in fact, that is still possible.

Trump was a SCAM pulled on the Whites.

From the Israeli newspaper, which in its Hebrew version is MUCH more HONEST!

Politically, he cannot afford to lose ANY of his base. He can’t afford to sic law enforcement on the extremists in any meaningful way. Not so long as his approval rating goes nowhere but down. If the base is to remain, Trump needs the votes of all of his enthusiastic supporters in the “alt-right,” American Nazi sympathizers, Klan offshoots, Aryan militias, doomsday preppers, and a host of other white Christian supremacist groupings and extreme right housebound, head-bound loners.

As a number of studies have shown, of all eligible voters in the United States, only 27 percent voted for Trump. Twenty-eight percent voted for Hillary Clinton and 44 percent did not vote.
Behind in the popular vote, Trump needed every white vote he could get to win the electoral college.

The polls were truly fucked up last time. They didn't even come close to predicting Trump's win.

The big problem the GOP have mid terms and Trump later, is all that enthusiasm will have died down. ALL those fired up to vote Trump, will sit in front of their TV's, some happy that Clinton is gone, others happy that the job was done.

AND then we have the hispanics who are upset they lost making sure they come out in larger numbers next time around.

When voting is not compulsory it is all about getting the BASE out there, and others enthused enough to come out.

TRUMP royally pissed an important percentage of his base in bombing Syria - they wont vote next time around, and may also stay home come midterms - bad news for the GOP.

Then Trumps attack on the GOP over health care did little to help the GOPs midterms.  It looked as the GOP couldnt function.

WHEN you look at Trump's poll numbers the important part of them will be - what percentage of Republican voters support him.

Soul Glow's picture

Trump is right, they have to do HC reform before cutting taxes, because cutting taxes is only able to happen if the cut Obamacare.  Yet he needs to realize the reason the Freedom Caucus didn't go along with Obama Care Lite is because it doesn't do enough to cut meaningfully, and with that tax cuts would be anemic.  If Trump is going to do anything meaningful he needs to make some moves.  He isn't doing that.

A single-payer system is overall cheaper as can be seen in any other country on the planet. Who earns less with a single-payer system? Insurance companies, pharmaceuticals, and doctors. Who has more money in their pockets? All corporations not in the above list, and all individual citizens. Is it inconvenient for getting care? Yes! Do corporations and people have a huge net savings in health care outlays? Yes! I vote for a 100% probability of having a lot more money in my pocket even if it comes with a 20% probability of shitty doctor appointment scheduling.
