Inside The World's "Doomsday Vault"

Tyler Durden's picture

Imagine that the unthinkable has happened. A massive asteroid impact triggers a “nuclear winter” effect, or one of the world’s most dangerous supervolcanos erupts. Maybe Donald Trump gets in an epic Twitter feud with Kim Jong-Un that initiates World War 3. Either way, things are going sideways, and the fate of human civilization itself is at stake. Will everything be lost? Visual Capitalist's Jeff Desjardins explains...

Well, besides the fact that the world’s cities have been replaced by smoking craters, there is some good news for the humans that survive a potentially apocalyptic scenario.

On a remote island that is just 800 miles (1,300 km) from the North Pole, the Norwegian government has built a failsafe in the freezing cold that protects thousands of the most vital crops from extinction. Officially called the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, it already holds close to a million samples of crops around the world, with each sample holding about 500 seeds.

Today’s infographic, from Futurism, has more on this Doomsday Vault that could one day help to save civilization:

What about the bees?

If you are an intelligent vegetable. Yes, your seed is welcomed.

You haven't planted the seeds of global collapse with your debt money ponzi scheme, have you?

So is there a refrigerated vial of Rot schild, Rockefeller and  Clinton seed?

If so, nuke the joint.

..better to just end it all.

Fucking preppers.  All is well people no need for this shit your (neighborhoodbitcoin ).gov guy has you covered.

Mr 9x19's picture

actually with preppers the economy is falling more slowly than if nobody would care about the end of the world.

you cannot imagine the amount of goods sold for prepping per person per year. people make portals on internet and have solid markets.

working with shtn plan .com, alex jones and all the BS because the concept is, no offence but,  " no fear, no need to buy "

half planet fighting for food and water, other is whining of politics and do not even realize they have the basic acces just by turning a fucking valve.

I'm making over $7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life. This is what I do...

Good thing, because they will be the only ones that find this vault.

Bees. Soil microbes. Beneficial insects. There is a whole lot that needs to be stored for restarting agriculture. I never understood why they only have one vault and in an impossible to get to location. It would be prudent to have civilization reboot kits in secure vaults in many locations that are accessible after various disasters, natural or otherwise. These should also probably include lots of books or long-lived electronic data storage. These are things that sane civilizations that live on a planet that is periodically hit by space rocks and the like would do instead of wars.

effendi's picture

This is a back up vault to the several thousand vaults around the world. There are also many thousands of public, private, university and institute libraries around the world storing information such as books and research papers. Also thousands of agricultural institutes and agricultural colleges maintain trial plots of crops and these would have all the microbes etc in situ for the local area.

Normalcy Bias's picture

Yeah, those trial plots of crops would probably not be effected by radioactive contamination or nuclear winter. Sounds solid...

beemasters's picture

Bees. Soil microbes. Beneficial insects. Sure, but they need to deep freeze someone's green thumb too. I know some people who can't grow a thing even if their lives depend on it...and their lives will have to depend on it in a doomsday scenario.

So when 95% of humans are are wiped out by a GMO plague that also contaminates food crops, the chosen survivors will have access to "clean" seeds after the Rothschild plague pathogens self destruct in six months per their genetic programing. Or maybe not.

bloostar's picture

Wonder if Monsanto GM seeds and 'safe to ingest' Roundup have infiltrated the vault yet.

beemasters's picture

You mean 'contaminated'? Monsanto's lawyers are drafting a lawsuit as we speak.

yeah except that USA's will cost 9 billion and Russia will do it for 4.5 million

Funny thing is that Russia has Nuke prep courses running right now, with over 40 million people participating (1/6 U.S. population) with a great many fallout shelters to house large populations...Denmark, I believe has 100% population covered....and the U.S. which keeps sparking the war torch around the world????

When was the last time you heard of a fallout shelter for citizens?

When was the last time you even heard of massive injury and loss of life preparation?

Do you know of 1 person in your life that has a fallout shelter of professional quality?

In short, when the Nukes pass by eachother there IS ONE COUNTRY that is certain to be COMPLETELY ANNIHILIATED = The U.S. Population. (scumbags in Fed Gov will be sheltered) - And some 50% of the population of Russia will carry on.

Sesame seeds were found in a pharoahs tomb  and all present day ones come from those few. Earth is facing an ice age, not just idiots. Seeds from the vaults might not be accessed for millennia.

I wonder if this is what happened last time when all the sudden humanity showed up with advanced agriculture out of nowhere.  Some of the products should have taken hundreds of years and many generations to create through natural plant hunsbandry/tinkering and yet they seemed to just show up out of nowhere in the archeological record, when the earth's peoples were allegedly not sophisticated enough to spend generations tinkering with wild inedible plants for generations until they became edible or abundant enough in fruit to live off of.

We know that mankind has been nearly wiped out repeatedly due to cataclysm and possibly even caused by ourselves.  The Toltec, Maya, Aztec and Inca peoples had historical tales of bearded white men (Quetzalcoatl, Veracha, Hyustus, etc.) coming by sea and teaching them to farm, math, astronomy, pyramid building and various other survival skills (The reason why the Conquistadors were welcomed.  They said they would be back because they natives were said to be so distraught as their "Gods" were leaving them).  These same stories exist all over pacific Islander nations as well.  Apparently they also told them to stop sacrificing people and although they complied it emerged again later.

Openheimer made numerous comments alluding to India's ancient histories/Mahabarata discussing the possible use of nuclear weapons in man's forgotten past.  Also physicist Frederick Soddy, said this in 1909: "I believe that there have been civilizations in the past that were familiar with atomic energy, and that by misusing it they were totally destroyed."

Who knows but the people in charge or evil.  If they knew that some cataclysm was coming and made plans to save themselves, their evil asses would control and ruin and entire new planetary history.

Most of the cultivated vegetables eaten in the world today originated in the New World: potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, corn, squash, pumpkins, peppers, sweet potatoes, peanuts, avocados, chocolate, blueberries, and many others.

These were presumably developed by selection, from wild foods. Many seem to have originated in South America. The farmers who developed them were settled in the Americas for thousands of years, so they would have had plenty of time to develop these crops through selective breeding.

This is a staggering agricultural accomplishment, no matter how you look at it.

Europeans had also been practicing agriculture for thousands of years, but at the time of the discovery of the New World, their plant-based diet still consisted mainly of grains, leafy vegetables (mostly of the cabbage family), onions, and root vegetables like turnips, parsnips, and rutabagas. The big Europen contribution to plant-based agriculture was probably mainly tree fruits and viniculture. I'm guessing that the less impressive Europen progress had much to do with climate, along with a stronger focus on domesticated animals for meat, milk, and eggs.

There is no reason to suppose that prehistoric seed banks or alien intervention was involved. Developing high-quality food crops through selective breeding of wild plants is something skilled humans can do, and have been doing for thousands of years.

Ms No,

Have you read "Fingerprints of the Gods" or "Magicians of the Gods" by Graham Hancock?
