Caught On Tape: British Navy "Escorts" Russian Warships Through English Channel

Tyler Durden's picture

British Type 23 frigate HMS Sutherland “located” and escorted two Russian corvettes, ‘Soobrazitelny’ and ‘Boiky’, while the vessels were passing through English Channel during a naval exercise.

The two Russian ships were “spotted” by the Royal Navy on Friday, and, as RT reports, subsequently escorted while passing through the English Channel in international waters.

The Russian embassy was not impressed...

“HMS Sutherland is carefully marking these Russian ships as they pass close to UK waters. The Royal Navy maintains a vigilant watch and is always ready to keep Britain safe,” Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said in a statement.

The corvettes (frigates in NATO classification), accompanied by a fuel tanker and an ocean-going tug, were performing naval exercises, according to Russian Navy officials.

That's all you need to know.

A million Russian troops were on that ship ready to land and totally invade the UK, but that British escort ship stopped them cold in their tracks.

Rory_Breaker's picture

They were stealing the fish from the waters too

Belrev's picture

Always amazes me that countries that have troops all over the world, bomb and invade others every year, then turn around and act with self-righteous indignation when Russian ships pass near their territorial waters.

HowdyDoody's picture

The US has dumped some F-35s on the UK. Soon these money buckets will be involved in the action - assuming the weathr is right.

Tug. Can't go anywhere without a good tow-truck. Guess no one accepts Russian Visa cards.

HowdyDoody's picture

It's there as a friendly gesture. The latest UK navy ships have engines that don't work when the sea water is too hot. The Russians would give them a tow back.

The Type 45 is fabulous except it has precisely half the power supply it needs. thus you can sail it and look mean, or sit dead in the water and fight it.

We normally keep one "on Patrol" in home waters, based in Portsmouth. So, if the Russkis chose to sail near Portsmouth it can nip out and pose at them. That said, last time I went past the dockyard there were 2 of thisd type in.

However, the vessel we sent out onn this occasion was a previous generation Type 23. Actually a very good ship, with a proper power supply. Can fight and sail all at the same time, can you imagine. Albeit, due to some Health & Safety arsewit at MoD Abbeywood, it can no longer fire through the bridge. Hmm. So, we sent out a Type 23 which was actually capable of engaging with the Russians had the need arisen, which it didn't/wouldn't. Presumably Vlad is smiling quietly at our choice of vessel for the task.

Seems procurement is just as fubar both sides of the Atlantic (ref. QE Class carrier without cat & trap, F35 esp F35B, Zumwalt, Aegis, etc).

Dark star's picture

I wouldn't like to be on a Zumwalt in a heavy sea.

There is no reserve buoyancy in the bow when it sticks its nose into a steep trough; instead of the bow lifting, the ship will keep on going to the bottom of the sea.

Compare the shape with a normal flared bow which has huge reserves of bouyancy as it digs deeper into the water.

Russia has no business having ships anywhere near there. They do this stuff on purpose to get reactions. Like the chicks on the internet no one knows so they flash some boob to get viewers. " Hey look at me " Not sure why the desperation by Russia.

False.

If Russia wishes to move one of their vessels from their Arctic Sea bases to their Black Sea or Mediterranean bases then they are perfectly entitled to do so via the shortest route through the international waterway known as the English Channel.

SoDamnMad's picture

Right. And no one stopped them.

You are a special kind of braindead zombie...

please post more of these utterly moronic reactions and the proof to the world how stupid you really are.

Going thru the channel is the shortest route for ships, and everybody has the right to do that, INCLUDING warships when not at war.

Zombies like you are 99% of the reason wars exists.

Fixed it for you.

The Chinese are only permitted junks.

SoDamnMad's picture

The distance from Dover to the nearest coast of France is approximately 22 miles. That makes it essentially 12 miles of national soverign territory out from both England and France.  Both countries are nice enough to allow free passage through the Channel  just as Turkey allows free passage through the Boshorus for ships going to and from the Back Sea. I am not convinced the Chinese might let anyone, especially the US, sail that close to Mainland China.

shutterbug's picture

It has nothing to do with being "nice enough" and everything with international shipping agreements.

Get your facts complete ... not only the part You Like.

Sirius Wonderblast's picture

It's normal, sensible action by Russia to see how well we react (and with what). Hardly a surprise given the recent actions of America, Britains major ally.

So now they have reaffirmed we are vigilant, and do react promptly, but with Type 23 not Type 45 (cos one works and the other doesn't).

Nonsense. Coming from the Baltic, going round the north of Scotland would be a big detour.

Russia tells Britain give back Gibraltar & Falklands before telling US what to do.

RUSSIA has told Britain it should "clean its conscience" and give back Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands before it criticises them over their involvement in Ukraine. Moscow's ambassador to the UN, Vitaly Churkin made the shocking remarks when responding to his British counterpart Matthew Rycroft at a UN security council meeting in New York. (Daily Express 4 Feb 2017)

It is called Globalism my gentle friends because they have no nation.  They certainly hide behind and in Israel and use the corporation of the US as their military arm but their operation is global and has no single HQ.  It certainly has some of its main tentacles in London, DC, and Rome but don't forget Hong Kong or NY or Brussels or Frankfurt or Astana among others.  Know their symbols and their ideologies and you can find them or their influence almost every where.  Religion and ideologies are used as their tools to act on the ignoramus.  The truth shall set you free, which is why "Fake News" and "Conspiracy Theory" have been created and applied to derail debate among the plebs.  The debate is neatly framed to support the their wolrdview and though many are starting to wake up to the charade, true progress and civilized cultural evolution will take generations of well-informed, internationally organized, and determined citizens.  May God be with us (no, not that angry bearded man in the sky, see religion as a tool of control based on human psychology, but rather the Greek kosmos or natural order of the world)!

Reminds me of traveling through Russia by train and being asked to leave the compartment while the soldier and his German Shepherd spent some quality time with my luggage. I guess it's all just healthy paranoia.

I got the most professional treatment by Russian Customs at Moscow Airport (Sheremetyevo). They would not open my bag until I was present.  They told me where they wanted to look at something and I pulled it out for their inspection.   ALL over the US TSA has opened my bag, jumbled everything up, let bagged items loose and then left me one of their cards.  I will continue to fly Aeroflot across the Atlantic and have yet to be assaulted by security guards or police.

Zero-risk bias's picture

Fair enough. I wasn't trying to dissuade those claiming that Russian security weren't within their rights. As to airlines, not sure Aeroflot's track record of safe landings has me convinced, but as you say about TSA, that's precisely why I won't be flying to the US any time soon. A smile goes a long way.
