40% Of Spanish Children Live In Poverty

Tyler Durden's picture

Despite a resurging stock market and stabilized bond risk premia (cough Draghi cough), EurActiv reports the proportion of children living below the poverty line in Spain has increased by 9 percentage points between 2008 and 2014, to reach almost 40%.

Spain has the EU’s third highest rate of child poverty, after Romania and Greece. EURACTIV Spain reports. While child poverty in general rose significantly, the sharpest increase (56%) was among households of four people (two adults and two children) living on less than €700 per month, or €8,400 per year.

Spain has the third widest gap in the EU, behind Latvia and Cyprus, between the levels of social protection offered to children and people over 65. During the crisis, Spain’s oldest citizens were much better protected than its youngest.

According to the Spanish Statistical Office, cited by Unicef, investment in the social protection of families fell by €11.5 billion between 2009 and 2015. Child poverty increased in most developed countries between 2008 and 2014, according to the report, and by two thirds in European countries.

But it's not just children, Spanish poverty rates across the whole nation remain extreme.

Still as long as stocks are stable and bond yields low, Europe is 'fixed'.

Nothing more than putting a bandaid on a slice of an artery. The waves of migrants will overwhelm Turkey and they will simply find another way in. Unless the reward system is stopped, waves and waves will continue in their efforts to win the lottery, finding a spot in the civilized world and live for free. Difficult problems need hard and sometimes harsh solutions.

EU, that pinnacle of civilization, beacon of mankind, imparter of blindingly sheer enlightenment: first they bomb Muslim countries into oblivion, then they bribe Muslim countries to keep fleeing Muslims from oblivionated Muslim countries within the few Muslim countries they haven't (yet) bombed and away from their bombcrazies' constituencies...

"immigration is a national affair, in the EU countries"

Hmm... wonder why they're calling Orbán a fascist for resisting to forcefully take immigrants, and threaten any one that won't take all the immigrants the EU just decided they should've, then...

No, you would be killing muslims who tried to enter illegally, not because they were muslim. Why do you Euros suck so hard?

Ghordius's picture

ok, let me assume you are American, White, Christian (otherwise, exchange the labels with some that fit)

what would you think if we were killing Americans trying to enter illegally?

what would you think if we were killing White People trying to enter illegally?

A bullet costs 25 cents to produce. That is less than it costs to feed a moslem for even a single hour of his long lifespan. Not cheap? The cheapest option we got for sure!

thisandthat's picture

You should've told that to your dear EU leaders before they decided to bomb the shit out of every muslim country in sight before and after being warned by muslim leaders of the "unintended" consequences for the EU "plebs"?

"I think there is a resurgence of anti-Semitism because at this point in time Europe has not yet learned how to be multicultural. And I think we are going to be part of the throes of that transformation, which must take place. Europe is not going to be the monolithic societies they once were in the last century. Jews are going to be at the centre of that. It’s a huge transformation for Europe to make. They are now going into a multicultural mode and Jews will be resented because of our leading role. But without that leading role and without that transformation, Europe will not survive." ~ Barbara Lerner Spectre

What else do you expect when Europeans in general are being extortionately taxed, and the Governments are spending that money on illegal migrants, foreign aid to countries with nuclear and space technology, wars for profit and lets not forget the corrupt politicians and bureaucrats  who are taking their cut  instead of spending the money on the indigenous European people.    There will be civil war if this continues.

Probably 50% of college graduates live in poverty also. After you take out the exchange of dollars created by student debt, Obamacare premiums, taxes, and sub prime loan purchases (up to and including ishit). The only difference is the homeless walking down the streets of innercity US have iphones and SNAP cards.

Here in the UK an unemployed couple with 2 kids can expect a benefits package in excess of £20,000 per annum. Should the parents work low paid jobs most of these benefits will still be payable.

What qualifies as "poverty" today would have been considered living in the lap of luxury just 100 years ago. Tell me what percentage of these kids have malnutrition due to not enough food to eat? What percentage can't get adequate clothing, and shelter? Probably .0001% IF THAT. When people hear this stuff and think of poverty they picture poor, underfed waifs dressed in rags and living on the street.

.gov is a racket the bigger .gov  (EU)the bigger the theft and loss of freedom, that's why the globalists want the NWO massive world .gov..it's a sweet racket for the 0.01%..

poverty always follows..as the late middle class of Caracas..once a rich city..now thru massive socialist .gov - they are literally starving, they are dying of the disease called

massive .gov.

socialist much?

Ghordius's picture

well, in that case... the "EU gov" is twenty times smaller then the "US gov"

we have (something I constantly have to reply to with facts, because it seems so bloody hard to believe):

no federal army, no federal intelligence services, no federal navy, no federal police

nothing enough to write home about, really. so, where is that big EU .gov?

why do you cling so much to those fantasies about "EU.gov", and it having anything to do with that other thing you call "NWO massive world .gov"? is it part of a religion of sort? is it a cultural item you can't shed in front of the factual realities of the world?

is it a kind of part of your... identity?

Spanish taxes are outrageously high, and a freelancer pays a fixed sum of 250 Euros per month for healthcare alone ... even if your income is zero. Then they got the worst bureaucrazy in the EU ... and they wonder why nobody does business there?

ejgej's picture

I lived and worked there in the '90s, never paid anything like 250€ per month for anything, come on!

Dunno wether nobody makes business there anymore, but they have to be quite smart, if they are suceeding in growing the GDP +3% for the second year in a row...

ejgej's picture

I have several friends in Spain, they always told me that things are not as they may seem...For example, even in the brightest situation before 2008 Spain never had an official unemployment under 20%. A situation that would have melt other countries in a glimpse....but Spain never showed to have a problem.

Spain is in many ways similar to Italy, about 88% population already owns his own home, that means no loan to pay back to banks, no rent to pay the homeowner, no assurance to pay on the house. Consider that most of spaniards live in cities and towns rather than sparcely in the country, and their towns are rather well connected with public service, Madrid and Barcelona have an underground metro service New Yorkers can only dream, so you can often really live without a car: no car, no assurance on your car...
To study there are Run state school and universities that are very cheap to pay, and still offer a better level than most in the US, so that's never been an issue...
Finally, just as in Italy, the health public system in Spain works fine enough for most cases, that means almost no private assurance to pay for your health, even when you're old (at least today).

That means that in the spanish as in the Italian provincial areas you can really afford life in 4 people with barely net 1000€ per month, even having a car. It's not really a big problem, while in big cities over 500k life can be more expensive, but you still can match the end of the month with net 700€ if are in 2 people and you don't need a car.
Let's say that if you succeed to find a mostly undeclaired paid job, the game is almost done, and you can live decently, even if you're below any poverty line statistic!

thisandthat's picture

Because they're living off their parents, that's why; that's what changes mostly from the US: multigenerational/broad family closeness - parents, grand-parents, even grand-grand-parents, uncles, godfathers or inlaws, etc. will eventually be there to help, finantially or otherwise. That's how "you" make ends meet with 1k/mo in a big city...

No one pays assurance on rented houses; anything that happens is the owner's problem, not the renter's - where you got that from? Also, home ownership has always paid taxes - and they always go up when you least need it. Car insurance is relatively cheap though (not has cheap as in Portugal, but then cars are much less expensive than here) - gas and taxes up to several times factory price is what makes them expensive.

Homeownership is also NOT what it used to be: nowadays it's a lifelong endeavour, with people loaning money for up to 50 (fifty years) to pay for a home that has a guarantee of just 5 years. So you either spend your entire adult life paying for "your" home (at risk of losing it AND the loaned money, if shit happens) and be stuck with it no matter what, or you spend pretty much that same amount of money renting one, and keep mobility and stay hassle free.

Also, if Spain is anything like Portugal (which it mostly is), at least in the north, they DO live sparsely, not in confined town areas as in the south, or in northern, even "middle" Europe.

Health systems are killing pretty much every EU country's economies.

700/mo barely pays you a 2/3 bedroom in a big city and that's it - and that doesn't scale down linearly.

Undeclared jobs are under increased revenue scrutiny and small businesses are self-inflicted wounds, due to taxation, globalization, concentration, and consumer brainwashing.

They were neither rich nor poor under Franco, and the people in Spain were nearly all Spanish or at least European. So, go ahead you idiots: use "fascist" as a derogatory term. Show how stupid you are. The Fascists and Nazis, if still in power, would have kept Europe European.

you are correct..very correct..the left has failed europe..and is hurting the usa in much the same (insane policy) ways..the death of culture.

Almost everyone is fascist.  Even Jesus said he was sent to serve the Jews, not anyone else.

There is a large frieze of a pair of fasces above the Speaker's podium in the USA House of Representatives.  They couldn't make the point any more clearly.

TPTB practice fascism all day, every day, in every way, and then say that when other people do it, those other people are monsters.

mary mary's picture

P.S.  300 years after the Romans killed Jesus, they brought him back to life as a Zombie, creating, out of thin air, their Roman Catholic Zombie Church, put statues of their Zombie everywhere, and told everyone that Jesus was sent to serve everyone except the Jews, which is the exact opposite of what Jesus said.  The Roman Catholic Church has never told the truth about anything to anyone.

Spain, along with the rest of southern Europe was always poverty stricken before being heavily subsidised by that criminal cabal known as the EU. We all know the blindingly obvious, that the culture of southern Europe is very different from the north. Trying to pretend we are all the same is the globalists biggest folly.

About the same percentage as the uk then? And there are 20 million kids living in poverty in the USA.

Weirdly, Spain came out second worldwide in Bloomberg data regarding the healthiest and iirc happiest places to live, behind Italy, 12 of the top 16 were in Europe. USA ranked in the 30's iirc.

And this despite Italy and Spain having horrific unemployment levels. And even worse youth unemployment.

Europe in chaos, just what the US ordered.

The US has endured decades of Europe sticking their fat fucking monarchy noses in their free market world to obstruct and impede.

Europe is a socialist (transformed from dictatorial monarchies) state and the underpinnings of this are weak at best.

Europe has delayed their collapse by stealing and pillaging resources from the mideast and africa.

Bye bye Europe - time to move to a US system - if you owned guns in Europe, those goat fuckers wouldn't be running hog wild.

The children's parents should pull all the gold out of the Zombie Catholic Church and sell it to feed their children, the children the Pedophile Zombie Catholic Priests told the parents to have, even though the Priests know perfectly well that Spain can't produce enough food to feed that many children.  But the Priests have a job, creating millions of little slaves for the Luciferians who own the Church.  So the Priests tell the parents that they will burn at the stake, or burn in Hell, if they don't pump out lots of little slaves for the Luciferians.
