U.S. Preparing Charges To Arrest Julian Assange

Tyler Durden's picture

In a stunning new report, CNN has just revealed, according to anonymous sources at least, that US authorities have prepared charges and will seek the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for intelligence leaks dating all the way back to 2010.

US authorities have prepared charges to seek the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, US officials familiar with the matter tell CNN.

The Justice Department investigation of Assange and WikiLeaks dates to at least 2010, when the site first gained wide attention for posting thousands of files stolen by the former US Army intelligence analyst now known as Chelsea Manning.

This latest revelation comes after CIA Director Mike Pompeo ramped up the Trump administration's rhetoric against WikiLeaks describing it as a "non-state hostile intelligence service" earlier this week.  Ironically, as we noted this morning, Pompeo's comments can just days before the FBI and CIA admitted that they are searching for an "insider" at the CIA (not a Russian) who exposed thousands of top-secret documents that described CIA tools used to penetrate smartphones, smart televisions and computer systems.

Last week in a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, CIA Director Mike Pompeo went further than any US government official in describing a role by WikiLeaks that went beyond First Amendment activity.

He said WikiLeaks "directed Chelsea Manning to intercept specific secret information, and it overwhelmingly focuses on the United States."

"It's time to call out WikiLeaks for what it really is: A non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors like Russia," Pompeo said.

Pompeo's comments were, of course, met with an immediate snarky reply from Assange over twitter.

For the past several years, U.S. prosecutors have struggled with whether the First Amendment precluded the prosecution of Assange.  In fact, in what now appears to be a very prescient opinion piece, Julian Assange recently penned an article in the Washington Post defending his publications by saying that his motives are "identical to those claimed by the New York Times and The Post."

Quite simply, our motive is identical to that claimed by the New York Times and The Post — to publish newsworthy content. Consistent with the U.S. Constitution, we publish material that we can confirm to be true irrespective of whether sources came by that truth legally or have the right to release it to the media. And we strive to mitigate legitimate concerns, for example by using redaction to protect the identities of at-risk intelligence agents.

During President Barack Obama's administration, Attorney General Eric Holder and officials at the Justice Department determined it would be difficult to bring charges against Assange because WikiLeaks wasn't alone in publishing documents stolen by Manning. Several newspapers, including The New York Times, did as well. The investigation continued, but any possible charges were put on hold, according to US officials involved in the process then.

All that said, CNN's sources seem to believe those same prosecutors have now found a way to move forward...though we're sure the New York Times won't receive similar arrest warrants.

Of course, it's unclear what immediate purpose the charges will serve given that Assange is holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for the sole purpose of avoiding political persecution.  That said, somehow we suspect that some form of 'leverage' is about to be applied against Ecuador to help them 'remember' that they have other immediate and critically important uses for Assange's London bedroom.

And this pretty much sums it up:

Please, over 30,000 people worked in those towers every day. So some demolition crew came in and wired those buildings, including #7 to drop in their own footprint and nobody ever noticed anything?  Let me guess, There was some super secret "MindRay" that everyone passed through when they entered that made them forget what they saw while technicians were busy planting explosives everywhere.

Planes were "Super Imposed"?

You contract to the largest demolition company in Australia. What do you sell? Toilet paper? because your analysis is Full of It.

Maxine Waters says Trump is cool with her.......  Never have I seen such a 180 degree change in a politician.  Trump is the swamp.

How does this happen?   Is it overt/covert threats?  Probebly not.  It is the trappings of office, the packed schedule, the insulation from real folks that causes a person to forget those that brought them to the dance.

So Sessions says that Assange is a priority. Hillary's Illegal server?, nothing to see here. The IRS targeting conservative groups?, Nah. The Deep State circling the wagons to protect their own.

The truth will get you killed.

Thats what they want. Better to be like Ghandi and just refuse to comply. It worked on the Brits. Not so much the Moslems. Anyway you look at it, Interesting times ahead.

I guess the "transparent" government of the US isn't all that transparent, and anyone who tries to make it transparent will be lit up like a Christmas tree.

Assange 2020!

Assange for President!

I would observe the corrupt establishment should consider significant "blow-back" that will occur as a direct result of any prosecution of Julian Assange or WikiLeaks.

If Trump allows this then he's a PROVEN TRAITOR.

Anonymous source = The Trump administration kite flying. It should be blindingly obvious to all by now that if there is anyone out there that is going to free us from the elitist globalist agenda, it wont be another politician. Which begs the question, what is the point in voting at all at this stage in the game. I think we all know in our hearts if we are going to ever shake these bastards off we will have to fight our way out. For me it is waiting for our government to stitch us up over Brexit, because that fight is far from over. If i was an American though i would be primed to punch the next asshole why tried to tell me Trump was playing 4D chess

CRAZY... to see that USA government tries to prosecute someone
- who isn't a USA citizen,
- didn't break any laws while ever being there,
- didn't break into USA located or owned systems ever,
- who does not have to follow ANY law by USA (because of the above)

and they STILL think they have the right and the grounds to prosecute such a person while he is OUTSIDE the USA and never will go there....

Must be that USA thinks it OWNS the fucking whole world, so if they think anything, that goes....

TOTAL CRAZY MORONS in the W.H. and EVERYBODY is included from left to right.

TeaClipper's picture

Even crazier that the very person they are trying to sacrifice is the person who single handedly ensured a Trump win. This is nothing more than kite flying though, Trump wants to gauge what level of shit to expect if they push this agenda. Have to say though, man it would be one hell of a court case, which is why he would never make it that far alive.

"CNN reports" is a sure sign of fake news.

So say all the Trumplings.  What is the proof?

Now with that, let's see how many downvotes and ad hominem attacks this provokes.

'CNN reports from anon source' yea I stopped reading there, most likely fake.

90% of Americans (or more) have no idea about any of this.  For Gods sake 90% can't name a state that begins with a "U" and these guys think the world cares.  The world cares about hunger not their games, not their spy tools.  Going after him only validates the information.  What the heck is with these people.  Look at how many forgot about Snoden two days after Facebook stopped reporting it.

Chill.  Sometimes quiet is your best friend.

Wikileaks did nothing wrong.  Publishing whistle-blower materials is not a crime unless USA has become Nazi USSA.  Moreover, Wikileaks will go on without Assange because so many now see the problems require bright light.  Notice how the WikiLeaks revealed abuse of power are not followed up on resulting in reform???

hangemhigh77's picture

We're gonna throw Assange in prison yet probably the most prolific female sereal killer in America walks free, Hillary Clinton walks free. What's wrong with this picture?

Econogeek's picture

The Ecuadoran embassy in London would not be sheltering Assange if the Trump administration were too weak to hold off the deep state types who want Assange's head.  If the deep state plus Trump admin were united in wanting Assange, they would have him.   We're talking Ecuador here, and the UK.  I mean, really.

Maybe the Trump people are in the process of getting Assange out of London and this story on CNN -- that's CNN -- is their cover story. It's signalling something to someone, obviously.  Hiddlen in plain sight.  I think the deep state types keep inching closer to Assange and it's getting too tight for the good guys to protect him where he is.

That's my take.  I'm guessing a lot of Trump's people are giving this one all they've got.  The price they might have to pay to keep Assange safe-ish is taking away his microphone.  That would be a loss to everyone, but not a betrayal by Trump.  It's probably the very best his people can do, and it's really, really good, in my view.

Assange deserves all the help and friendship anyone can offer him.

Like 59 tomahawks. WTF could Ecuador doabboutit ??

Fucking war pigs. /truth

I am very convinced that Trump is not interested in protecting the truth or Assange's 100% content veracity.

The deep state is back in full control.  The speed at which Trump flipped is astonishing.  They either threatened his life, or his family, or offered him billions of dollars in a Swiss bank account when he's out of office, or both.  Either way, he's now their cabin boy, and we're fucked.  The only question now is will he help them start WWIII, which they desperately want to (1) further destroy nationalism and a few "renigagde" countries, (2) make more money and consolidate their power and control, (3) create more confusion through death, destruction, and hardship (instead of prosperity), and at the same time (4) reduce the world's population, which they view as a hindrence to thier power and control.  Find a safe place and don't let your sons and daughters fight and die for these monsterous evil pricks.  Either way, Trump has just established himself as a big pussy and a complete sellout.

Watch the link below (came out two days ago) and you'll understand what we're up against.  I'd view it soon and spread it around as this guy may very well be "disappeared" or the video may disappear.  The financial mafia (deep state) is vicious, ruthless, and will kill anyone who gets in their way.  Kennedy was the last President to stand up to them and look what happened to him.  They killed Jack, his brother Bobby, and his son John.

Soph's picture

The Deep State has little to do with this. Trump has ALWAYS had a hate on for Assage and Snowden...he has viewed them both as enemies of the state and wants them strung up. The Deep State had no roll to play in encouraging a Trump administration to up the ante on these guys. That was coming the moment he was voted in. The only question was "when".

I thought Snowden would be the first target early on, what with the possibility of a thawing of relations between the US and Russia. Clearly that's not happening anytime soon though, so Assage gets his head put on the block first.

Gadfly's picture

Look at the big picture.  He flipped on almost every single issue - Russia, Syria, NATO, Wall Street, War, peace and prosperity, bla, bla, bla.  The things we elected him for he no longer stands for. He's now the poster boy for the deep state agenda.  Watch the video.  This guy spells out how they operate.

Soph's picture

My point is simple...he never HAD to flip on this issue...he has always wanted these guys crucified.

The fact that he has been assimilated by the government machine on other issues is not at all surprising. The US has not been governed by the people, for the people for a very long time....if ever at all. Whether Trump was ever truly on the side of the people is a matter of debate, but its entirely academic and irrelevant because the outcome of assimilation into the government machine has always been assured.

Looks like Goebbels hit bingo:  "The astonishing thing is that Mr. Churchill, a genuine John Bull, holds to his lies, and in fact repeats them until he himself believes them. That is an old English trick. Mr. Churchill does not need to perfect it, as it is one of the familiar tactics of British politics, known to the entire world. They made good use of the trick during the World War, with the difference that world opinion believed it then, which cannot be said today... The essential English leadership secret does not depend on particular intelligence. Rather, it depends on a remarkably stupid thick-headedness. The English follow the principle that when one lies, one should lie big, and stick to it. They keep up their lies, even at the risk of looking ridiculous."
