U.S. Preparing Charges To Arrest Julian Assange

Tyler Durden's picture

In a stunning new report, CNN has just revealed, according to anonymous sources at least, that US authorities have prepared charges and will seek the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for intelligence leaks dating all the way back to 2010.

US authorities have prepared charges to seek the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, US officials familiar with the matter tell CNN.

The Justice Department investigation of Assange and WikiLeaks dates to at least 2010, when the site first gained wide attention for posting thousands of files stolen by the former US Army intelligence analyst now known as Chelsea Manning.

This latest revelation comes after CIA Director Mike Pompeo ramped up the Trump administration's rhetoric against WikiLeaks describing it as a "non-state hostile intelligence service" earlier this week.  Ironically, as we noted this morning, Pompeo's comments can just days before the FBI and CIA admitted that they are searching for an "insider" at the CIA (not a Russian) who exposed thousands of top-secret documents that described CIA tools used to penetrate smartphones, smart televisions and computer systems.

Last week in a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, CIA Director Mike Pompeo went further than any US government official in describing a role by WikiLeaks that went beyond First Amendment activity.

He said WikiLeaks "directed Chelsea Manning to intercept specific secret information, and it overwhelmingly focuses on the United States."

"It's time to call out WikiLeaks for what it really is: A non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors like Russia," Pompeo said.

Pompeo's comments were, of course, met with an immediate snarky reply from Assange over twitter.

For the past several years, U.S. prosecutors have struggled with whether the First Amendment precluded the prosecution of Assange.  In fact, in what now appears to be a very prescient opinion piece, Julian Assange recently penned an article in the Washington Post defending his publications by saying that his motives are "identical to those claimed by the New York Times and The Post."

Quite simply, our motive is identical to that claimed by the New York Times and The Post — to publish newsworthy content. Consistent with the U.S. Constitution, we publish material that we can confirm to be true irrespective of whether sources came by that truth legally or have the right to release it to the media. And we strive to mitigate legitimate concerns, for example by using redaction to protect the identities of at-risk intelligence agents.

During President Barack Obama's administration, Attorney General Eric Holder and officials at the Justice Department determined it would be difficult to bring charges against Assange because WikiLeaks wasn't alone in publishing documents stolen by Manning. Several newspapers, including The New York Times, did as well. The investigation continued, but any possible charges were put on hold, according to US officials involved in the process then.

All that said, CNN's sources seem to believe those same prosecutors have now found a way to move forward...though we're sure the New York Times won't receive similar arrest warrants.

Of course, it's unclear what immediate purpose the charges will serve given that Assange is holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for the sole purpose of avoiding political persecution.  That said, somehow we suspect that some form of 'leverage' is about to be applied against Ecuador to help them 'remember' that they have other immediate and critically important uses for Assange's London bedroom.

And this pretty much sums it up:

The actions of Assange and Wikileaks doesn't in any way meet the definition of this nonsense...

non-state hostile intelligence service

Wikileaks as far as I am aware doesn't actively go out and spy on anybody, nor does it actively request intelligence of any type from pariticular people. Nor can its leaks said to be hostile, unless truth and ambarassment are hostile, it isn't targetted against the STATE, so it doesn't fit the hostile description at all.

For it to be an intelligence service it has to be actively going out and getting intelligence, and targetted at the STATE, to find information on the STATE, and to be hostile it has to also be targetted at the STATE.

Wikileaks tended to embarass a whole bunch of people, from donor sources.

Oh, there would be a fair trial, but he might get Hernandezed while he was waiting for it.

Assange doesn't seem like the suicide type.

Davidduke2000's picture

Assange would be moved from the Ecuadorian embassy by Russian agents and possibly he is no longer there already.

Given the impenetrable secrecy of 'their' sources, and the lack of transparency on vetting those sources and the informatiion 'they' provide, this is tantamount to blind faith.

BLAH BLAH BLAH... and this just in ... BLAH BLAH

On June 19, 2012 Rafael Correa, President of Ecuador, granted Julian Assange asylum in

Ecuador's London Embassy. After Obama ordered Fredrik Reinfeldt and Carl Bildt to lay

the most pathetic 'honey trap' in Stockholm you can imagine, before him. (Compliments

of the dykes that run Sweden's Ministry of Justice.)

It was Georges Clemenceau, who famously said goodies like, "

America is the only nation in history which miraculously has gone directly from barbarism to degeneration without the usual interval of civilization.

Military justice is to justice what military music is to music.

He might have said Swedish justice is to justice what ABBA is to music, but he never heard 'Dancing Queen'.

Assange managed to get out of Sweden before the dykes could obey their their US overlords and

grab him.  The US IC wasn't upset.  They knew where Assange was.  They tossed the ball in FM

William Hague's court.  He responded by announcing that England was prepared to enter the

Ecuadorean Embassy to snatch Assange.  He was reminded that Elizabeth was queen and not

Victoria.  Whether it was that preposterous threat or something else, Hague stood down as

Foreign Secretary in July 2014 and was replaced by David Miliband.

Miliband reminded the Washington Raj that there would be an election in Ecuador on

April 3, 2017, and if they could a find a candidate, who would expel Assange, and spend

millions on bribes, to get him covertly elected.  Obviously, Washington did not spend enough.

"The best laid plans..."

Now Washington is going to spend even more trying to ram a complete recount through the

courts.  Lenin (!) Moreno looks like he'll be moving into the Presidential Palace in Quito.

And Moreno has said that Assange could stay in the embassy.

Two and a half weeks after the Moreno's upset, the US IC (intel cretins) has been forced,

after horsing around for almost 5 years, to get an indictment of Assange, and ask Ecuador

to extradite him, which Moreno won't do.

On the plus side, the American MSM and the Democrat Party had such a hissy fit about

Russia trying to influence the election last November, no one paid attention to what

the US did to get Guillermo Lasso elected President, and how badly they failed.

conraddobler's picture

All according to plan.

Even Assange is nothing more than a puppet in all this.

It's all Divide and Conquer theatre.

Trump plays a role to exhaust and cut off the deplorables from the Bernie Supporters.

They are using natural aversions of each group to stoke fires of hatred so they won't stop and sit still long enough to figure out what the real problem is.

It aint either group.

We never get single payer we get Obama care.

We also never get the libertarian utopia we get the deep spy into everything state.

We never get the conservative small government utopia either we get the MIC.

It's fucking obvious they are just dividing people up and conquering them.

Picking us off because they are getting us to feel threatend by each other more than the real problem.

Think people... think.

I know it's asking a lot but just think.

Camp kool aid kids pick your flavor/cult/hive mind.  Then they can push your trigger/button and you will just turn off/go all glassy eyed and jump to the tune. It worked just like that for all 8 years Obama was in office. Scream out racist and any rational thoughts went bye bye from both sides. Fake news works the same way folks. The second you say or imply truth is subjective all rational thought is moot. A classic sophist trick that allows them to be the soul source of truth. And bam! in steps your dogma next thing you hear is just what you want to. Everything else bounces right off.

Time to go back to the big house, Assange.  You should be treated well.  If you are not a member of the ISRAEL tribe then SPEAK OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEACE.  DO THE RIGHT THING AND EXPOSE ISRAEL.  Tell us about the kill switches around the world.  Like the one set off on 3/11/2011 in Japan.  The Japanese were against  the Israeli Palestinian killings.  Come Clean or Die.

TALPIOT   'DuckDuck- go' search it.....  Israel can turn any country to ruin in a heartbeat.

Davidduke2000's picture

israel cannot wipe its own ass, 13 million joos left in the world intimidate the weak only, Assad is not intimidated by israel he shot 2 planes and he will shoot much more if israel invade his air space.

but israel's big problem will be with China who can crush israel like a bug.

i don't understand.

what can assange be charged with?

and how does the 1st amendment apply?

assange is not a us citizen.

assange was not in the usa when he did whatever he did.

assange did not personally hack into any systems.

assange essentially published "found" material.

assange did not break any laws of his host countries.

where does the usa have jurisdiction?

otherwise, the way i'm reading this, erdogan's regime should

have the authority to arrest german comedians.

Davidduke2000's picture

Assange is in the embassy of equador, nobody is allowed in not even the us.

Ecuador should issue a citizenship to Assange and name him as embassy staff he will have immunity to travel within the UK without any trouble, travel to Russia or China to avoid the criminal CIA.

Politics is the peaceful way we manage to settle our different views about what our society should be.

The alternative to political solutions is violence. Trump looked like he might be a politician who would move us back toward freedom; that delusion was quickly smashed. His government going after Assange is just more of tyrannical government going after anyone who stands in the way of unbridled power.

Apparently it is criminal to tell the truth, and patriotic to lie.

uhland62's picture

Once the population has really digested the deception there will be some kind of backlash, especially if he follows the tradition of having his own war. Obama had Syria and Libya, Bush II had Iraq and Afghanistan, Clinton had Serbia and Somalia. Trump looks like getting his wars, too, Iran and North Korea - he's working on it.

The wars by the last Tsar triggered the Romanovs' demise. The Russo-Japanese War brought the railways and printers to a standstill in 1905 but the war ended and the rage dissipated.

Then came WWI, bringing women and children into the streets, the bolsheviks to power. What did the women and children want in 1917? Bread - because all the grain was sent to the military and the grain producers made a killing on inflated prices.

Assange's exposure of DNC & Hillary emails got Trump elected.  Trump better give a presidential pardon to Assange or I will no longer support Trump.

Off Topic:

When TV people and politicians wear The Purple Tie, are they "coming out" and stating, symbolically, that they are LBGTQ?

Maybe, at least, Q?

Mighty 30's picture

The purple revolution, regarding the deep state coup. Look it up. When Hilliary lost Bill and her were wearing purple as a signal that the revolution was on.

mary mary's picture

Thanks.  I looked it up and discovered that I coined the term Purple Revolution, right here on ZH, the day Hillary appeared in her Purple Raiment to give her "I sort of concede for now but payback is going to be a bitch" speech.

Not a revolution, of course, but an anti-revolution.  Trillionaires always go to war AGAINST revolutions.

But, just as importantly, I think one should have as much fun as possible, and it is lots of fun to think that all those Purple Tie wearers on TV are trying to tell the LBGTQ Rothschilds, Soroses, and Priests and Rabbis that, "yes, I am LBGTQ too!  I am whatever you want.  Here's the URL of my donate-to-my-campaign website."  Why not?

Off Topic again, who cares about a little issue such as National security when we have bigger issues, such as when Bruce Jenner does his full nude photo shoot. Will he have a landing strip or go all the way nekked?;

Blankfuck's picture

Wow ok, well if Mr Julian Assange can hack in Goldman Sachs files or the fed reserve, Im sure he can expose hidden information. You bet some people were advised how to trade from information of what should had been confidential. I bet millions were made plus there are millions  of printed money that nobody knows where it disappeared!  Its the cartel of corruption in our government all based on favors im sure. Maybe he can quietly trade info off where he wont expose it as a fair trade instead of being a hunted to be arrested.

uhland62's picture

But you have to keep up the kabooki show; everything is above board that is done with taxpayer Dollars. And naturally, the taxpayer is not allowed insight into that.

Revealing the truth and exposing dirty tricks is a cardinal sin.
