Our State-Corporate Plantation Economy

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by Charles Hugh-Smith via OfTwoMinds blog,

We've been persuaded that the state-cartel Plantation Economy is "capitalist," but it isn't. It's a rentier skimming machine.

I have often discussed the manner in which the U.S. economy is a Plantation Economy, meaning it has a built-in financial hierarchy with corporations at the top dominating a vast populace of debt-serfs/ wage slaves with little functional freedom to escape the system's neofeudal bonds.

Since I spent some of my youth in a classic Plantation town (and worked on the plantation as a laborer in summer), the concept of a Plantation Economy is not an abstraction to me, but a living analogy of the way our economy works.

Wal-Mart and the Plantation Economy (August 24, 2010)

Colonizing the Plantation of the Mind (August 25, 2010)

We Need a Social Economy, Not a Hyper-Financialized Plantation Economy (November 12, 2015)

Loving Our Servitude in America's Plantation Economy (February 10, 2017)

The Plantation Economy is extremely hierarchical. Corporations and the state are both extremely hierarchical.

In the Plantation Economy, the Company has access to nearly unlimited credit. Small businesses serving the employees and the employees have enough credit to live on but not enough to buy productive assets. As a result, the Corporation can always buy up any productive assets, expanding its monopoly.

The state also has an essentially unlimited line of credit which it can use to fund its favored cartels and state fiefdoms.

In the Plantation Economy, the Company suppresses any innovation that threatens its monopoly and the state enforces whatever means the Corporation deploys: buying up patents and small companies, predatory pricing to bankrupt competitors, etc.

The Plantation Economy is a mono-culture of large corporations and their partner in rentier skimming, the state. Our economy is a state-cartel finance-debt system; it's only capitalist on the margins, that is, in the fringes that aren't profitable enough for corporations to control.

The core feature of this Plantation Economy is the privileges of accumulating capital are all in the hands of the state-cartel elites. The foundation of classical capitalism is the accumulation of capital, which in our era is not just cash, factories, mines, etc.--financial and industrial capital--but knowledge capital: intellectual property, knowledge of processes, creation and control of content, research and development, control of information streams (that is, maintaining information asymmetry) and so on.

Those with unlimited access to low-cost credit can buy up or control all productive capital, including the labor of knowledge-based workers.

When an economy is optimized for global corporations, the only possible result of this arrangement is a Plantation Economy. Our economy is optimized for corporations: they have access to unlimited low-cost credit, their capital can be shifted around the globe at a moment's notice (i.e. it is mobile), they have the tax advantages of incorporation and complex tax codes, they can declare bankruptcy without any limitations and wipe out their debts, they can engage in fraud, corruption and embezzlement and face no consequence other than a modest fine, they can suppress competition and their size enables dominance of the labor market.

Imagine if all these immense advantages were granted solely to worker-owned collectives and co-ops, and corporations were de-optimized, that is, they no longer had access to credit, their employees and managers could be jailed for systemic fraud and embezzlement, they paid high fees for merely existing and they were denied the ability to buy political influence as easily as an employee buys a loaf of bread.

The problem with a Plantation Economy is that it inevitably stagnates and collapses. Suppressing competition and innovation corrodes productivity, and as productivity and social mobility both fade, so does wealth creation.

The state-cartel Plantation eventually eats all its own seed corn via the vast expansion of credit. What appears to be "wealth" in the state-cartel Plantation is illusory asset bubbles fueled by state-engineered credit expansion.

Beneath this brittle veneer of great "wealth," the real economy is stagnating. These charts reflect this reality:

Productivity: stagnant:

New business growth: stagnant:

New credit-money issued to finance, monopolies and cartels: through the roof:

And the only possible output of the state-cartel Plantation Economy: runaway wealth and income inequality. There is no other possible output of our system.

We've been persuaded that the state-cartel Plantation Economy is "capitalist," but it isn't. It's a rentier skimming machine. Capitalism enables the accumulation of capital by anyone in a transparent market, and the capitalist state enforces a level playing field.

There's the get-to-work horn, people. Time to labor for the rentier skimming machine and its enforcer, the state, to pay your taxes, student loans, mortgages, and all your other neofeudal "obligations" to the state-cartel elites.

Fear porn is endless...

There is always something that is about to blow up.... Not that it isn't, but this is a constant....

Giant Meteor's picture

Well just in case anyone forgets.

But seriously just a little bit of fear porn makes the medicine go down.

A lot of it, and it well, it get's caught in the throat like a hairball  !

The other consideration, when it DOES blow up, no one will notice ..

Call it what it is. Fascism. The government has been captured by wealthy corporate oligarchs, and now serves to ensure that the majority of us labor on their behalf, and invest what little we have left in their securities.

There is only ever one kind of event that ends this type of control over society.

Millennials (and other under social security age) folks are finding it hard to rationalize going out to spend your limited fiatskis on way overpriced food & drink  - and the excellent dance clubs are very few and hard to find -   free youtubeporn and a legal cannabis (if you're fortunate to be in a state smart enough to have made it legal)  - don't have to deal with DUIs, douchebags and an very unlikely hookup situation, F it - chill with friends @ home.

I say good for them. It took me a good bit longer to get that wise.

A positive development for them, not so much for the "consumer e con o me"  however.

So the retiring boomers are checking out, the millenials are checking out, illegal immigration? I guess they're checking out, well ok only a partial jest on that one, but it does make one wonder, who is checking in? Oh, right, that would be big brother. Big brother is checking in. Watching TV, Smartphones and ain't even paying rent for Christ sake.

Every bubble is being majorly tapped out, with the exception of the FED bubble finance, keeping those plates in the air, while the sabre rattling continues. Demand? I'm just not seeing it frankly, and this would certainly fit. Where are the well needed greater fools, pert (pet) financing aside? Lot's of trendlines

It may be time to check back in with Celente.

Giant Meteor's picture

No downvote from me, and I do appreciate your point. Cleanest dirty shirt and all that. I think the point that folks are making, eventually everybody's laundry gets taken to the cleaners ..

I always think about those folks that thought they "had it made" post retirement in 2008 ..

To them I imagine, any talk of greater recessions was fairly much irrelevant.

This isn't a matter as far as I am concerned "oh woe with me." Fuck that, the world nor people in it owe me a damn thing, and compared to a good many, I live like a fucking king, which is also subjective, until one get's down to thirst and starvation, cold, and beatings ..

Still, it is right to call out the systemic corruption, that has been directly responsible for the deaths of millions, untold destruction and mayhem on a global basis. At the very least all this "bitching" allows them to know, that WE know ,,

Do the string and lever pullers give a shit that "we know?" I believe they do, which is why they are vigorously attempting daily re-writes on the "narrative."

Spigot's picture

After noodling on these issues, in the round, for almost two decades I finally came to the conclusion that 90% of the 90% below the 10% have little to no mental or emotional ability to divorce themselves from their "way of life". They are automatons.

Their thinking is completely chained to maintaining their 'normal'. Their emotional states are entirely captivated by the media, status emblems and reward/punishment structures, which they accept. The only reasons they slightly swayed toward Trump was because they had 8-10 years of negative economic experiences which started to put a fire in their bellies. But even at that, they barely moved in the direction of rejecting their captivity.

As for you and me, well, at least we are thinking it through a bit and trying to puzzle out solutions. IMO, the largest blind side we all have is accepting the "money system" which has been foisted upon us. Until we shuck that off in our personal lives and adopt non-state dominated vehicles for trade, we will constantly be fighting the deadly under tow of the plantation "credit books".

Just about all the commentating efforts have been focused on describing the problems and pointing out the failures of the current systems. There is precious little in the way of re-inventing means of escape and prosperity. I expect that we will only get there when the systems fail and we are left to ourselves to actually make those inventions and innovations in the real world.

Until then, my brethren, let us consider ways to make a different world for ourselves here and now. We are the only ones who can accomplish that for ourselves.

SixIsNinE's picture

your comment fits well with that post about the grandma who was arrested & harassed by NASA goons after trying to trade (some fake space relics her husband acquired legitimately while working for nasa ) for FRN paper slips.

Yes, and the big bubble that suffocated you if you tried to run away.

IMO, we simply reinvent the world we live in to be immune from parasitical government and corporations. It's more ethic than anything. Problem is that people tend to compromise principles for conveniences, as we see with people complaining about job exportation which going to Walmart...

But on an individual or small group basis it may be achievable. To a degree the Amish live that way already.

Giant Meteor's picture

I agree 100% with your observations, and suggestion. Any "long term" solution will be  bottom up, individuals effecting their own lives, worlds, and communities. Breaking free of the matrix needs to be a battle waged, one person, one conscience at a time. The revolution will not be televised.

In fairness to Trump voters, many went with the candidate that pandered better, told them what they already knew, ie; the system is rigged folks, it's corrupt folks, I know because I've had to bribe both teams to folks to play in the rigged  system, that's how it's done folks! Cue the applause, and standing ovations. The peeps were not used to hearing such blunt truth and political heresy, lobbed at the status quo, from the national stage, like so many in the face hand grenades. Of course the usual political hacks and "media" lackey's and lapdog's were obediently appalled, so all the better. But this is not reality eh? Nor realistic.

"Their emotional states are entirely captivated by the media, status emblems and reward/punishment structures, which they accept."

This cannot be overstated. The conditioning, brain washing, cognitive dissonance, emotional attachments, whichever ones wishes to call it, runs deep. One can easily witness examples of it everywhere in common life, even within one's only family structure, especially there, and of course just as often, meet the most resistance there as well.. Fear is a helluva drug. Fear and pride together, incalculable, sometimes inpenetrable wall, and the damage done,

Good to hear from you. All the best.

GM

Thanks. Much appreciation for your contributions as well.

I was not so much criticizing those who voted for Trump, as making general observations. If it hadn't have been for the ongoing Depression he never would have had a chance. I do like his disruption style and hope some changes happen. No sense in being mannerly among thieves and traitors.

If you have an IQ of over 120 and are emotionally disengaged from "the normal way of life" in the USA it is possible that one could design an escape pod and pull the trigger. Women, tend to complicate matters as they are almost 100% invested in making their nests within the existing systems. Pity that, but it's the fact of it.

IMO we are emotional creatures with rational capabilities, so emotions will regularly over rule better judgement. That also has to be taken in to account as one figures out how to form a long term plan.

I'm still working on my escape pod.

So many excellent writers, former insiders, that are rarely, if ever heard from by the masses.

Max Keiser has been describing and calling out the plantation economy for years.  I like the author, but he should give credit.  I know he's been a guest a few times on Keiser's show/webcast.

BigFatUglyBubble's picture

Max Keiser is good at metaphors, and boiling down and breaking down concepts to make them easy to understand.  I am a fan.

Giant Meteor's picture

Max has been hammering away, year in, year out, as many have .. Charles has definitely been hitting the theme harder.

Everyone knows the system is rotten, to it's very core, and yet the theft get's deeper and more brazen with each passing day.

I suspect what eventually brings it down will be seen in the rear view mirror, as equilvalent to the weight of the matched hubris, much like during that time, when as example, people learned that the "unsinkable Titanic" was indeed sinkable, a metphor for all time, and even now in our new age of recklessness, and hubris, worthy of the metaphor ..

I see other parallels, not the least of which the "yellow journalism" of it's day, pablum and gossip rags, that passed as news. On the other hand, when the next collapse occurs, most everyone will say, why of course, it was always inevitable.

nmewn's picture

We've been pointing out the plantation economy long before there was a Max Keiser.

Of course, no one listens to low brows ;-)

LetThemEatRand's picture

True, but Keiser coined the term years ago and I don't remember anyone beating him to it.  He also saw through Trump before it was fashionable among those who also understood the deep state.   I didn't watch/listen to Keiser for a several months but started again recently. He's thinking about a run for office as a Blue Team member and he was pandering to guests who appealed to his potential voters but who did not get it, so the show sucked for a while.  But his shows over the last few weeks have been spot on.

nmewn's picture

I grew up in the South, I've been beat about the head & neck with the term for as long as I care to remember. When us "Red Team members" pointed out that the welfare state, as instituted by progs (Johnson) was no different in creating a dependency class of people on the .gov plantation we were shouted down as razzzists.

It didn't take long for food stamps to be replaced by EBT cards which bankers skim off of both ends.

Now I say fuck it then.

Pumpkin's picture

The god of this world is Satan, and everything about this world is a lie.  That's the only truth in it.

Radical Marijuana's picture

The "truth" is that there must necessarily be some murder systems, as the most extreme forms of the death control systems. The "truth" is that those murder systems are driven to maximize maliciousness, due to those systems being most successful by becoming as deceitful and treacherous as possible. The "truth" is that "Satan" is merely another positing of perceptions based upon the DUALITIES of false fundamental dichotomies, and the related impossible ideals.

"Entropy" is the scientific "Satan." Within the dominate philosophy of science, the concept of entropy has been inverted by inserting arbitrary minus signs into the entropy equations of thermodynamics and information theory. Ironically, the biggest and best organized gangsters made and maintained civilization through developing the most successful murder systems, including the ways that those controlled their publicly apparent "opposition" groups. Therefore, although militarism is necessarily the supreme ideology, since that is the ideology of the murder systems, its social successfulness depends upon it becoming as dishonest as possible.

By and large, the public perception of "Satan" is as absurdly backwards as the public perception of entropy, and for similar reasons. The much more abstract "truth" is based on the principle of the conservation of energy and momentum. However, the "common sense" perception of that principle has been inverted due to taking for granted presuming that time and space are independent absolutes. While the special theory of relativity demonstrated that time and space are a relative continuum, which changes in order to accommodate the principle of the conservation of energy, and while that theory included demonstrating that matter is an extremely concentrated form of energy, which was especially demonstrated by the facts that atomic bombs go boom, pretty well NONE of those profound paradigm shifts in mathematical physics have had any publicly significant impacts upon political economy dominated by various old-fashioned religions and ideologies, which mostly developed as forms of controlled "opposition" surrounding the central core of the combined money/murder systems.

Post-modernizing science has tended to converge with ancient mysticism. The results go beyond the old-fashioned DUALITIES which were taken for granted by the dominate natural languages and philosophy of science. However, at the same time, civilization currently continues to attempt to use technologies such as atomic energy, which follows from the special theory of relativity, or electronics, which follows from quantum mechanics, etc., as if it was NOT necessary for political science to also go through series of profound paradigm shifts.

Authors like Hugh-Smith provide relatively interesting superficially correct analysis. However, such authors tend to NOT get remotely close to going beyond discussing the accumulating apparent anomalies of civilization operating according to the methods of organized crime, to go through profound paradigm shifts in the ways that they perceive those political problems. It is much more facile and popular to rely upon old-fashioned false fundamental dichotomies, such as old-fashioned notions regarding "Satan," etc., rather than go back to the sources of ancient mysticism.

There is no reasonable doubt that the established political economy is almost totally based on public governments enforcing frauds by private banks: "everything about this world is a lie."

It is thus quite correct to assert "that's the only truth in it."

However, the deeper levels of the "truth" are the ways that the public perception of everything has been inverted. Therefore, not only is "money" made out of nothing as debts actually "negative capital" which has annihilated "free market capitalism," almost everyone who begins to recognize that still continues to take for granted their inverted perceptions of everything, including, therefore, inverted notions of what the "solutions" to those political problems could be, which are bogus because those problems were not subjected to any deeper analysis, and hence, those bogus "solutions" are not consistent with that deeper analysis.

While the kinds of superficially correct analyses, such as presented by Hugh-Smith, are worthwhile to consider, the dismal failures of those to go through deeper analysis based upon series of profound paradigm shifts are finally fatal errors. Similarly, old-fashioned over-simplifications of the political problems as being due to the "Satan" as the Prince of Lies, and so on and so forth, never get remotely close to the kinds of radical transformations which are theoretically necessary.

Despite that we now live in world where there are globalized electronic monkey money frauds, backed by the threat of force from apes with atomic weapons, the vast majority of those monkeys and apes want to continue to believe in world views which adamantly refuse to assimilate the series of intellectual scientific revolutions and profound paradigm shifts which made those electronic and atomic technologies possible. Of course, the same goes for the vast majority of the members of the transnational scientific community, which mostly continue to take for granted ridiculously old-fashioned kinds of "political science," which are still oxymoronic scientific dictatorships, which employ advancing technologies to enforce bigger frauds better, without being able and willing to recognize that those are still fundamentally fraudulent.

Although the supreme laws of nature, such as the principle of the conservation of energy and momentum, are not going to stop working, and hence, nothing that depends upon those is going to stop working, that also includes the ways that civilization will continue to be controlled by its murder systems, which back up it money systems, in ways whereby those are enabled by about exponentially advancing technologies to become about exponentially more dishonest. That Civilization does NOT want to better understand itself. Both the central core systems, namely banker dominated governments, and most of their layers of various controlled "opposition" groups, do NOT want to better understand themselves. Rather, almost everyone likes to continue to believe in the bullshit which they originally believed in. Practically by definition, profound paradigm shifts are profoundly unpopular.

While the kinds of superficially correct analyses typified by authors like Hugh-Smith are, indeed, superficially correct, those continue to be WRONG, in the most flabbergasting ways, since they continue to take for granted perceiving everything in the most inverted and perverted ways possible, due to the degree to which they continue to take for granted thinking and communicating by using the dominate natural languages and philosophy of science, despite that the "common sense" conceptualization of time and space has been proven to be totally WRONG, and therefore, the conceptualization of entropy, and similarly of "Satan," is also totally WRONG.

At the present time, the Grand Canyon Chasms between prodigious progress in physical science and political science continues to get wider and WIDER. We are more and MORE living inside Wonderland Matrix Bizarro Worlds, wherein everything is publicly presented in the most absurdly backward ways possible, and that especially includes the ways in which various layers of the controlled "opposition" to the core systems of triumphant organized crime tend to continue to think about political economy issues in ways which takes mostly for granted the world views originally promoted by the best organized gangsters, the banksters.

Since human beings live by making mental models of the world, including mental models of themselves within their mental models of the world, and since those models are not the thing modeled, except when taken to infinity, therefore, everyone necessarily operates through some mental models which are inherently relative illusions or lies. However, instead of endeavouring to assist more people to better understand those elementary principles of philosophy, or genuine spirituality, the established systems do everything possible to prevent most people from better understanding themselves, or anything else. That is especially the case with political economy based on public governments enforcing frauds by private banks, which operate as symbolic robberies of the many by the few.

In that context, an article such as the one above from Hugh-Smith provides superficially correct analysis of those trends, which are getting worse, faster, at about an exponential rate, due to about exponential progress in physical science providing technologies which can enforce frauds many orders of magnitude greater than ever before in human history. However, that kind of superficially correct analysis always tends to grossly understate the seriousness of that situation, as well as then propose and promote bogus "solutions" which are similarly superficial.

Likewise, anyone whose "solutions" collapse back to the same sets of various impossible ideals provides nothing actually useful to cope with runaway electronic frauds, backed by the threat of force from atomic weapons, etc. ... In particular, any superficially correct collapsing back to old-fashioned notions about "Satan" and "lies" is quite useless, since it continues to take for granted being quite absurdly backwards, although, of course, those doing so do not recognize that they are doing that, nor do they want to recognize that.

While Zero Hedge has far more content that recognizes the accumulating apparent anomalies driven by enforced frauds becoming exponentially more fraudulent (which the more mainstream news tends to barely begin to), the content on Zero Hedge almost NEVER goes through more profound paradigm shifts regarding those runaway anomalies. Instead, it is quite common for the pattern of votes to be favourable towards comments that are over-simplified statements of superficially correct analyses, including bogus "solutions" which are similarly flawed.

Despite that advancing mathematical physics has radically changed the perception of time and space, and therefore, radically changed the ways that human beings SHOULD perceive everything, and despite that doing so has enabled technologies such as atomic energy and electronics, etc., to be developed, the vast majority of people continue to want to misunderstand political problems by still using various old-fashioned religions and ideologies. Although human beings and civilization are manifesting as general energy systems, whereby they live as toroidal vortices engaged in entropic pumping of environmental energy flows, because that IS the case, those systems have developed to become as dishonest as possible, as well as ARE becoming exponentially more dishonest, and hence, exponentially more psychotic.

Globalized Neolithic Civilization has become almost totally based upon public governments enforcing frauds by private banks, whereby "money" is created out of nothing as debts in order to "pay" for strip-mining a fresh planet with the technologies provided by series of industrial revolutions. Since everything was built on being able to strip-mine the planet as fast as possible, the longer term consequences are way worse than typical kinds of financial "doom porn" tends to present. Moreover, the younger you are, and most probably especially for those who are not yet born, the more that you are being lied to, cheated and robbed by the entrenched political economy systems, which are operating through fundamentally fraudulent financial accounting systems, which operate as "a rentier skimming machine."

Any better financial accounting systems SHOULD be more consistent with the principle of the conservation of energy and momentum, which SHOULD include radical changes in the conceptualization of time and space. However, the social successfulness of the currently established systems depend upon being able to continue to engage in symbolic robberies, through enforcing frauds. Indeed, it is barely possible to exaggerate the degree to which Globalized Neolithic Civilization has become based on deliberately ignoring the principle of the conservation of energy, as well as misunderstanding the concept of entropy, as much as possible (which has it roots in the various old-fashioned religions which arose as forms of controlled "opposition," such as promote the false fundamental dichotomies between lies vs. truth, or God vs. Satan, etc. ...)

The special theory of relativity, which made it possible for atomic bombs to go boom, depended upon understanding that there was no fundamental dichotomy between the material vs. the spiritual, because matter was an extremely concentrated from of energy. It also depended upon that there was no fundamental dichotomy between time & space vs. energy, because time & space changed in order to become consistent with the conservation of energy. Similar assertions can be made based on quantum mechanics, as well as based upon every other area of prodigious progress in physical science, while, at the same time NO publicly significant progress in political science has been achieved, but rather, various old-fashioned religions and ideologies continue to overwhelmingly dominate political processes, in ways whereby the vicious spirals of the funding of those political processes continue to enable better enforcing bigger frauds.

Somehow, most people continue to want to resolve the real problems related to globalized electronic money frauds, backed by the threat of force from atomic weapons, WITHOUT changing the ways that they think and communicate regarding time and space, or changing their notions about entropy or "Satan" etc. ... Hugh-Smith's superficially correct articles, as well as many of the comments posted under those articles, illustrate that most of those who recognize the accumulating apparent anomalies of enforced frauds becoming about exponentially more fraudulent, such that "... the only possible output of the state-cartel Plantation Economy: runaway wealth and income inequality."

YES!

"There is no other possible output of our system."

That is especially the case because there is NO publicly significant genuine opposition to that debt slavery system which is not effectively some form of controlled "opposition" due to taking for granted staying within the same frame of reference originally made and maintained as the biggest bullies' bullshit, which became the banksters' bullshit regarding political economy, which is able to publicly present everything in the most absurdly backward ways possible, but nevertheless, is socially successful, and thus dominates through those triumphant symbolic robberies.

Debt slavery systems exist due to the debt controls being backed up by the death controls. However, given that it is NOT possible for any human beings to create any energy out of nothing, nor send any energy to nothing, more serious and rigorous thinking about the principle of the conservation of energy SHOULD change the ways we think about the death control systems. That is especially imperative due to the development of weapons of mass destruction. It is militarism, as the supreme ideology, which most needs to go through intellectual revolutions and profound paradigm shifts, especially because it is the murder systems which actually back up the monetary and taxation systems.

By and large, those who engage in superficially correct analysis, such as done by Hugh-Smith, et alia, are able to avoid going through deeper levels of analysis regarding the murder systems that backed up the money systems, and therefore, also are able to avoid going through profound paradigm shifts regarding the perception of death control systems in general. However, WITHOUT that, then nothing actually useful can be done about the debt control systems, which are currently driving "runaway wealth and income inequality."

WITHOUT deeper analysis of how and why governments are necessarily the biggest forms of organized crime, dominated by the best organized gangsters, the banksters, then there can only be bogus "solutions" suggested, which are similarly too superficial. Since the real problems ARE globalized electronic frauds, backed by the threat of force from atomic weapons, any "solutions" which are not more consistent with the mathematical physics that enabled those political problems to become astronomically amplified runaways, ARE NOT realistic resolutions of the real problems.

At the present time, Globalized Neolithic Civilization is based on excessively successful organized crime, manifesting as runaway criminal insanities. However, NONE of the various old-fashioned "solutions" regarding those problems are relevant anymore ... The current situation is that political economy developed within human ecology, in ways which depended on social pyramid systems, whereby the ruling classes waged war against the consciousness of those they ruled over. After thousands of years, the results are a wide-spread human consciousness which has become as deformed and dishonest as possible, and yet, simultaneously is able to publicly present its triumphant symbolic robberies as "good" and "productive" things to do. In that context, old-fashioned religions and ideologies are much more parts of that problem, than any paths toward genuine solutions.

["We've been persuaded that the state-cartel Plantation Economy is "capitalist," but it isn't. It's a rentier skimming machine."]

Oh yes it is. It's in fact the ultimate and final form of capitalism. You were just too intellectually lazy [or coward] to extrapolate the result of a very simple and predictable program.

[" Capitalism enables the accumulation of capital by anyone in a transparent market, and the capitalist state enforces a level playing field."]

LMFAO

Even on a mythical "level" playing field, LAND RENT & MONOPOLY RENT would bleed the economy dry. Bring in resource depletion & diminishing returns of technological progress and you wind up in a neo feudal clusterfuck...

You all scream and weep in terror at the thought of "commie" or "socialist" government imposing gayness and Islam on you.  You ignore all the postive "socialist" things America has and dismiss them as necessary aspects of capitalism (national army, police force, laws, etc.).  These things are socialist, though they are not socialism.

Capitalism, which so many here laud and demand, is not the wonderful free-market mechanism we all dream of.  There is no perfect information or homo econimus.  We are humans and largely ignorant so the wonderful models fall apart and we fall prey to "capitalists".  Trump is working to eliminate rules and regulations which "hinder" business and keep them from expanding and making more money.  But these rules also require them to not pollute or not steal from us (at least without being clever). Is that socialism?  If you like.  But if there are no rules and no regulations, do you really believe Exxon will look for you?  Or will they simply dump chemical waste into your drinking water?

America is not capitalist.  And it's not a free market.  Some parts of free but much is either rigged or regulated.  Where it's not regulated it's rigged.

I don't think Congress is particularly competent in this complex world, but at least their incompetence acts as a reactionary brake on the worst behavior of corporate America.  I prefer paying a few extra taxes to fund the EPA and fund extra cents for my gasoline than have lead in my children's water or smog.  But I guess that makes me a commie, eh?

Perhaps I can no longer read between the lines as well as some of the rest of you: Where's mention of money from nothing and usury? Ever was the way.

I realized we live in an era of refined Feudalism a long time ago. Plantation economy isn't a term I've heard before, but it amounts to roughly the same thing.

As a lad born into the lagging effects of King and Country, and the gravely wounded who still held the flag on high, it was something of shock when I realized my greatest enemy was combined Corporate and State power, and those things were one snake with two heads.

Even more cancerous to one's soul is when you realize, there ain't no way out of here for an honest man.  Too much diversion

"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Businessmen - they drink my wine"

You and me, we don't stand a chance against the liars, the psychopaths and the Messianic asshats, unless..we stop letting them divide us.
