"Total Chaos" - Cyber Attack Feared As Multiple Cities Hit With Simultaneous Power Grid Failures

Authored by Mac Slavo via SHTFplan.com,

The U.S. power grid appears to have been hit with multiple power outages affecting San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles.

Officials report that business, traffic and day-to-day life has come to a standstill in San Francisco, reportedly the worst hit of the three major cities currently experiencing outages.

Power companies in all three regions have yet to elaborate on the cause, though a fire at a substation was the original reason given by San Francisco officials.

A series of subsequent power outages in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City left commuters stranded and traffic backed up on Friday morning. Although the outages occurred around the same time, there is as of yet no evidence that they were connected by anything more than coincidence.

The first outage occurred at around 7:20 a.m. in New York, when the power went down at the 7th Avenue and 53rd Street subway station, which sent a shockwave of significant delays out from the hub and into the rest of the subway system. By 11:30 a.m. the city’s MTA confirmed that generators were running again in the station, although the New York subways were set to run delayed into the afternoon.

Later in the morning, power outages were reported in Los Angeles International Airport, as well as in several other areas around the city.

The San Francisco Fire Department was responding to more than 100 calls for service in the Financial District and beyond, including 20 elevators with people stuck inside, but reported no immediate injuries. Everywhere, sirens blared as engines maneuvered along streets jammed with traffic.

Traffic lights were out at scores of intersections, and cars were backing up on downtown streets as drivers grew frustrated and honked at each other.

The cause of the outage has not yet been made clear, though given the current geo-political climate it is not out of the question to suggest a cyber attack could be to blame. It has also been suggested that the current outages could be the result of a secretive nuclear/EMP drill by the federal government.

As we have previously reported, the entire national power grid has been mapped by adversaries of the United States and it is believed that sleep trojans or malware may exist within the computer systems that maintain the grid.

In a 2016 report it was noted that our entire way of life has been left vulnerable to saboteurs who could cause cascading blackouts across the United States for days or weeks at a time:

It isn’t just EMPs and natural disaster that poses a threat to the grid, but there is also the potential for attacks on individual power substations in the vast network of decentralized and largely unguarded power grid chain. A U.S. government study established that there would be “major, extended blackouts if more than three key substations were destroyed.”

Whether by criminals, looters, terrorists, gangs or pranksters, it would take very little to bring down the present system, and there is currently very little the system can do to protect against this wide open threat.

Whether the current outages are the result of a targeted infrastructure cyber attack or simply a coincidence, most Americans think the impossible can’t happen, as The Prepper’s Blueprint author Tess Pennington highlights, a grid-down scenario won’t just be a minor inconvenience if it goes on for more than a day or two:

Consider, for a moment, how drastically your life would change without the continuous flow of energy the grid delivers. While manageable during a short-term disaster, losing access to the following critical elements of our just-in-time society would wreak havoc on the system.

  • Challenges or shut downs of business commerce
  • Breakdown of our basic infrastructure: communications, mass transportation, supply chains
  • Inability to access money via atm machines
  • Payroll service interruptions
  • Interruptions in public facilities – schools, workplaces may close, and public gatherings.
  • Inability to have access to clean drinking water

It is for this reason that we have long encouraged Americans to prepare for this potentially devastating scenario by considering emergency food reserves, clean water reserves and even home defense strategies in the event of a widespread outage. The majority of Americans have about 3 days worth of food in their pantry. Imagine for a moment what Day 4 might look like in any major city that goes dark.

This exclusive clip from American Blackout shows what an American Blackout might look like:

Ahh...Friday, time for a beer.

What are they saying about massive outages in blue cities?

Eh, whatever.

synergize's picture

Great clickbait headline ZH, but its actually BS as the outage is only in SF

NidStyles's picture

Either way, gotta remember who is runn those cities. They can't even keep power going 24/7 in their countries of origin either.

It's called Cyber-War
Wake the fuck up, folks

For those really not in the know, I'd seriously recommend Clarke's Cyber-War ....

1033eruth's picture

"Wake the fuck up, folks."

And then what.  Tell me, just exactly what the difference is between being awake or asleep on this issue.  I'm assuming that since your cautionary statement, that once we become awake, we're going to do something differently?  You mean like, buy and store a bunch of candles?  Never use elevators?

My goodness.  San Francisco had a power outage!  The sky is definitely FALLING.  I'll bet you didn't know this, but we have power outages for ALL SORTS OF REASONS.  And get this, a power outage for an ice storm, or a tornado is virtually IDENTICAL to a power outage for other reasons.  They all have the same characteristic in that, you have no available electricity UNLESS you have solar cells, in which case you have limited power.

Now I really have to wonder.  Am I asleep or am I awake on this issue?  Tough call, tough call, particularly since doesn't seem to make much difference to the consumer if you are awake or asleep.

I would imagine if you are in CA you are more prepared for the electricity going out because of the "big one".  Imagine their surprise that the juice went out because of "cyberwar" instead.  I imagine they are at a complete loss at what to do next.  Totally unexpected and never imagined.

Never mind.
There is no reality.

Just plug back into he matrix and enjoy your gruel.

Understanding what when how and who wrapped inside false flags and propaganda used to be what this place was about.  But not anymore, I guess.

Nah.  Most the folks down LA way pay about $1800/mo in car payments and have a bottle of water in their rolling palace.

> But not anymore, I guess.

Nope. It's now a hangout for the Red Team statists, obviously. Same thing happened to FreeRepublic after Gore lost to W. Bush in '00. They purged any free thinking small-l types (any LibertyForum alumni here?) and the RNC took over. It became a cheap echo-chamber of one liners praising all things Red Team ... kinda like here now.

The rating system here also helps with the control. Most folks want to be bro's and desire green clickies and so don't point out any ugly truths.

But WTF do I know? I've only been here 29 weeks 3 days.

just don't tell my sister, or she'll go out and buy another couple o' 55 gal drums of raw flour, like she did for Y2K.   (fed a lot of worms and shit before she threw it all out, i figure....)

lemme guess....you selling some sort of survival gear, too?

idahobandito's picture

I upvoted you for your sister. She has made a classic mistake. Tell her to buy Hard wheat berries in the sacks and store them with oxygen absorbers in a sealed barrel, then when she needs to bake/use it, grind it with a Wondermill Jr, wheat grinder (about 210$). It will store for 20+ years and won't go rancid. When living remote, its a way of life, not a "prepper plan".

Speaking with the confidence of an ex-IT support muppet, I can tell you that you need to give your screen a thump, preferably on the left hand side. Two or three smart raps on the edge should probably do it.

Let me know how you get on :-)

(Oh, and if it doesn't work, hit it harder, or pour a cup of tea down the back)

Green/Red?  You mean there is a login?  Seriously would it kill folks to put up a sign or sumpin!

I haven't felt this cheated since my big brother pointed out that you're supposed to put money in the speed racer machine at the arcade before you start playing.

I never got the high score that time either--fuck me.

P.S.  can anyone tell me what my user I.D. is? (1983 all over again--I hope the fucin power goes out here)

My response: More BS for PUBLIC CONSUMPTION to obfuscate the TRUTH.

O'foolish Galations ... who has bewitched you??

Expect a lot of weird sruff in 2017 like strange weather, service interruptions because of infrastructure failures and bizarre quickly announced government programs trying to explain the unexplainable.

Where the hell did I put that blue pill.  I know it is around here somewhere.

Red pill, blue pill...

It's getting harder and harder to tell the difference.

Pop3y3too's picture

I sent the ladies of my family (mom and sis) a group text asking if they planned to come to me or was I to come get them since planning now would be prudent because after the power goes out there would be no text.

My mother hushed me in a separate text saying I was going to freak out my sister.  I said a little fear is warranted to get you to think ahead just a little bit but I take that to mean shut up so... you know where I live. When the time comes I'll be here waiting for your arrival.

Check out the SNAP outage map and the folks saying "My card doesn't work and I have children to feed and I have diabetes and and and...!!!" We are gonna be so fucked.  Some more than others.

Stupid drip along with other 28 morons that gave you a thumbs.

You didn't nor the other 28 fucktwits give a single, GODDAMN REASON of what would change IF I WAS AWAKE.

Just plug back into your assinine comments and continue spewing gruel that is completely and totally INEFFECTIVE at educating ANYBODY ABOUT ANYTHING!!

Knukles had people like you in mind when he tried to help. No, you are right. There is nothing else to do, go back to sleep. Don't pay any attention to 59 cruise missiles recently launched on Syria, thus poking Russia in the eye. Don't worry about China building the biggest submarine base in the world; they only have our best interests at heart. Don't pay attention to our our past statements to Russia on how we would never, never,  ever allow NATO missiles/iron on former Soviet outposts. Nah, no worries, we will all die anyway.

It is my hope that you are not a family man, for your lack of knowledge/wisdom is dooming them as well. No guarntees, but at least think of them and be prepared in case your family does survive what is to come.

Of course, you can choke on the smoke as it drifts ever so easily, and aimlessly up and over your head. Those who have ears to hear.....

With USA making their own Equation group tools of destruction, anyone with skillz can take down USA infrastructure or make a DOS botnet.  America rotting from inside, with schizophrenic flip-flopper for president.  Better than WWIII Hitlery, at least.  Actually, a bit humourous like Monty Python

So says the wise.  Or are you?  I beg to differ.  As much as you think you have taken the red pill I would argue you haven't swallowed yet.  Maybe you have an aversion to swallowing or a gag reflex.  Whatever the case may be, as much as you think you know.......you don't.  You're still on level 2.

Level 3:  It's all theatre.

Keep sucking, one of these days you'll swallow.

Wild tree's picture

Theater, as in you would have me believe it is ALL a show, that no truth exists. I would hate to believe in nothing; as you would seem to indicate, all powerful and seeing Joker pooh bear, as in full of shit. Believe in something, or fall for anything.

If I am wrong about what you believe, kindly expound.

JACKASS - I am AWARE of all of what you've said.

NOW YOU STUPID SON OF A BITCH, now that I am AWARE, tell me, JUST EXACTLY what I'm supposed to do about it.

See, in all of your worthless fucking rambling, YOU GAVE ZERO FUCKING SOLUTIONS - FUCK YOU and the rest of you morons that love giving thumbs to NON-EXISTANT SOLUTIONS.

Withdrawn Sanction's picture

"...tell me, JUST EXACTLY what I'm supposed to do about it."

The key words are "tell me" and "YOU GAVE ZERO [to me]."   Loosely translated:  such behavior betrays an impotent mindset.  Someone incapable of thinking things through to a possible solution, coupled w/an unwillingness even to try.  Just tell me/give me what I need to know.  That impotence then manifests as anger, bordering on wrath.  Pathetic really.

1033eruth's picture

Alright, spaz.  Original poster said, "Wake the Fuck Up".  The clarion call for action.

That's what I was objecting to because it was toothless.  NO SUBSTANCE, NO NOTHING.

Same as your last reply.

Electricity went out in San Francisco, BFD.  No solution needed for me.  As I said, electricity goes out for a variety of sundry reasons and it all gets repaired and back on line shortly.

Nothing is more impotent, jackoff, then someone criticizing and yet not actually saying anything.

If there is a cry to wake up, then it should be accompanied with something of value in conjunction with the need for action.  But hey, you're a dimwit attempting to be clever.  And you got an audience to urge you on.  FUCK YOU and your cheer squad.

Wild tree's picture

The best solution to your angst and inability to change the future is a strong belief in Christ. If you can get your head around that, then have potable water stored, a good rule of thumb is one gallon per person per day. Use food grade 275 gallon plastic shipping containers surrounded by a metal cage. Next store food in airtight containers such as rice, pasta, etc. along with canned goods and  enough to survive six months to get to a growing season. It would be best if you could have these items stored in a bugout location outside of a city, but reasonably close. Finally, gun and bullets for the zombies that will follow, as there will be long pork cannibales with them.

These are solutions, but are you willing to work to put them in place? I have found most like to rant, but never quite get around to implementing solutions for themselves or family.

idahobandito's picture

Wild Tree....you must live in my area. If you didnt have at least the above, people would think you are a moocher....or a lib waiting for the goobermint to save you.

awake or asleep , if you are in a big city and there is a major power outage , your ass is grass and the mob is the lawnmower........the truly awake are nowhere near a big city.

Not true. One can be awake and stupid.

1033eruth's picture

Oh really?  The truly awake are nowhere near a big city?

I've been RURAL by choice for YEARS.  That's the sole determining factor?

The jackass above said, I had to wake up without providing ANY NO DOZE whatsoever.  But I'm glad according to your definition, I've been awake for so damn long.

The Blank Stare's picture

You keep repeating the word "power outage". I think all the author and others are trying to say is to give some thought to the concept that the power may never come back on.

An EMP outage could be permanent for up to 90% of the urban and suburban populations.

1033eruth's picture

Yeah?  And what are the odds of that occurring?  Have you prepared for a meteorite strike?  Why not?

I don't even wear my fucking seat belts unless there is snow and ice on the road.

You've been conned about an EMP strike taking out the entire system.  Fearmongering is strong among the weak minded.  EMPs have a range.  You're pretty fucking stupid, not to understand that.  You believe in chemtrails too?  I wouldn't be surprised.

californiagirl's picture

Actually, the government here in California is at a complete loss when we have outages due simple reasons, like geomagnetic storms.  The Earth's declining magnetosphere is allowing more solar wind, cosmic rays and CME energy go make it to our planet's surface, so I expect we will see more outages due to power surges and damaged electrical switches.   Last year BART had to a big electrical problem that damaged over 50 cars due to "arcing and sparking" and seriously impacted the commute. They thought they had it figured out, but it continues, generally when there is some type of geomagnetic event, like when the solar wind spiked this morning due to the massive earth-facing coronal hole. http://spaceweathernews.com/  The general population and MSM are completely oblivious to the dangers of the declining magnetosphere, so geomagnetic activity is generally never considered when events like this occur.

Around here we also have to worry about sniper attacks taking out $15 million worth of substation equipment, apparently something you can do with a few snipers.  http://kron4.com/2015/10/16/video-new-development-in-south-bay-pge-subst...

Some years ago, I was working for a company in the SOMA area of San Francisco.  It was a late night and just as I was finally getting ready to go home at 1am, I hear an explosion at the nearby substation and the power went out for blocks.  Of course, the parking exit door refused to open so my car was trapped.  There was no manual override available without a key, which I did not have, and no one answered the emergency telephone number.  Then the police set up traffic cones, blocking all cars and taxis from getting anywhere within 6 blocks of the area.  Considering the dodgy neighborhood, I ended up pulling an all nighter because walking alone for over 10 blocks to reach a hotel, at 1am in that part of town was not a good idea for a woman.
