As the Nasdaq soars to record highs on the back of Silicon Valley's hub of computer and technology companies, some people are even turning to cars, vans and RVs for housing...

Oh boy... sharing a cubicle with some guy who lives in a van. "Hey Bob... is it my imagination, or does it smell like a sumo wrestler took a dump on a burning tire in here?"...

freedogger's picture

No, they shower at the office or a gym, probably smell better than most others in the office.

ThrowAwayYourTV's picture

Yeah so! If they want to live in a fucking camper let them live in a camper. No one says they need to have a back breaking mortgage to be successful.

How many, on boats live?  The boat people?

When nine hundred years old you become, look this good you will not.

So give up one's sovereign creative self to make the corporatons' bottom line. Sad.

Men (and some women) associate their identity with their career.  These tech guys have fallen for the propaganda that silicon valley is the mecca for tech careers.  As a result, they flock there so they can stroke their identity ego, even if it means living in a van down by the river.  In their mind, they made it.  So what if they need to live in a rusted out valient.

WillyGroper's picture

"Men (and some women) associate their identity with their career."

i've seen too many destroyed by this...as if that is all they consist of.

meat heads you've tried to warn will have heads spinning like the exorcist when this plays out.  that will be their come to Jesus identity crisis.

to move to sf/eastbay or the valley you need first/last/deposit to move into an apartment...also most require 3 spotless credit reports....so you are looking at $12,000 to move into an apartment. in sf proper add $2000 a month for a garage for your car. nowyou can work at that new gig ....for 3 months then they lay you off and you now owe the landlord $48k for the whole lease or they will get your ass...and that fucks up your credit and you can get a decent place any longer.......LOL

Wilcox1's picture

So where in the world do they dump their shit? They got an app for that?

Anarchyteez's picture

In Seattle they shit in storm drains in broad daylight.

Anarchyteez's picture

Saw a shopping cart overflowing with grocery bags full of human shit as as crap stained piece of tp wrapped my car antenna.

Liberal run cities are hell on earth. Intellectually bankrupt morons believing they're enlightened.

that's the new amorikan flag!  ;D

Must be great living in liberal utopia where everyone who makes 100k/year is dirt poor.

Anarchyteez's picture

They're behind the curve. In Seattle RV's take every other parking spot...I mean living spot.

We are 36 hrs at any point from a zombie apocalypse.

Houses Depreciate's picture

Seattle is one of the poorest most impoverished cities in the US right now.

Anarchyteez's picture

Only if you apply rational thought.

Baron von Bud's picture

Did you ever see Shaun of the Dead? Early zombie genre  and fun. Rents in San Jose for a nice 1bd in good area about $3000. SF has to be higher.

Houses Depreciate's picture

Silicon valley will look like the rust belt. It will take time but it will happen. It's just the way the world works.

sukebesan's picture

At least they have desiable jobs.

Anarchyteez's picture

Huh jobs?

Desirable jobs?

If you have to work in the pee trap of your toilet like Seattle or SF how is that desirable? Seriously. Seattle is far far worse as is singularly evidenced by the serial pediphile rapist mayor Ed Murray.

Liberal Progresives are everything that is evil nowadays...cloaked in the illusion of enlightenment.

peippe's picture

This is hyperbole.

No one is forcing the codeweasels into this pathetic loser lifestyle.

It just suits them.

They enjoy it, they can't stop, it's do this or get a real life.

Peter41's picture

The homeless population in Seattle favor derelict RV's parked in urban neighborhoods. The homelesss can emerge at nightfall to prey upon neighborhing homeowners.

They don't give a shit if the sun is up or down!

You WILL be parked in traffic and watch someone shoot heroin, shit, piss, or vomit.

cry me a living in a van down by the river

Manipuflation's picture

I am not short of cash.  I plan to be living in my van soon.  What more do you need?  I don't have to do anything special.  It is not about material goods.  I used to think it was but it isn't.  What the fuck good does material shit do for you?  Do you really think it will make you happy?  It won't.

Health care?  Who cares, we all die.  Stacks of gold and silver, well, the kids can have it.  I don't care anymore.  Sell the cars and the bikes and the guns.  I can rebuild it.  Maybe it is just better to walk sometimes.  Don't be afraid.

Archive_file's picture

I walked away from all that crapp a few years ago and don't miss it one bit.

Manipuflation's picture

It's freedom.  The shit you think you own actually owns you.  What was the point?  I wish I knew the exact answer.  I beat them all well enough.  I have everything.  I used to think it was about my having power over everyone.  I found out that power over others was not what I wanted.  I wanted the truth.  What a dumb idea.  No one tells the truth.  I am as l close as you would get to truth.

I make enemies everywhere I go because I know that people are full of shit and I call them on it.  You want to see my stacks?  I am not hurting.  I never told anyone how to live their lives.  I minded my own business.  The Russian Mrs. M is still prime ass.  Damn right she is.  Riding a Harley.  Damn right.  I earned it.

I am a fucking prick and so what?  I will always be on ZHers side though.

That said, I don't want material things.  I love Mrs. M, my children and you ZH folks.

Americans are starting to learn that consumption does not mean joy and happiness. The culture of America has always been to consume, buy-buy-buy,and that more and more means happiness and so on. Now, Americans are starting to learn what Europeans have always known. Europeans work to live not live to work. They eat well, have vacations, and know "how to live." Unfortunatley, Americans are going to have to learn the hard way when everything is taken away from them due to the dying dollar. Good for you that you've learned that "material acquisitions are not a prerequisite to happiness."

now you know why they want the visas!!!!!! open wage gates

azusgm's picture

Three years ago, a person who had worked for a couple of decades for the city of San Francisco boasted to me about how their permitting and zoning had limited the availability of land for residential development and thereby squeezed the market and the taxable base higher and higher. He worked there when Diane Feinstein was around.

Looks like the planned scarcity is still working.

amor terra's picture

Planned scarcity is working with all products, in all locations.  It's just a little easier to see it when people move into vans.

Doesn't it occur to any of these people to GET THE FUCK OUT OF CALIFORNIA?

As in, move someplace where you can actually afford to live!

Like Iowa or Spokane or Nebraska or Florida etc etc

Fuck the tech companies! If they won't pay a living wage they shouldn't be able to find anyone.

Twee Surgeon's picture

A wonderful idea if you can make a living in Nebraska. I once got to drive through Kentucky and thought it would be a nice place to be, very pretty country.

I know not a single soul in Kentucky, I met a few of the locals and kept driving. There was no prosperity implied, No match of skills. Have you ever actually done what you preach ? I have. I do not mess around on dead end's. Nice country. Would have stayed if I thought it might make things better.

I raise Arabian horses and cook Meth for a side-line, er, no , I do not. It's a divided clusterfuck of a true jewel.

BendGuyhere's picture

The point is: you do not have to make as much of a 'living' to 'live' in Iowa or Topeka or Wisconsin as you do in bejewelled California. And the people in flyover country are A LOT NICER.

California's got all this sunshine and these tech slaves are inside hunched over their screens 12 hours a day....

That '59 year old guy' who looks like he's 80 needs to fucking get real with himself and get the fuck out of there while he still can. He's never going to be secure or comfortable in Cali and that tech company that's feeding on his life energy isn't doing him any favors either.

GeezerGeek's picture

Unfortunately, too many who leave these Liberal utopias for greener pastures bring their asinine progressivism with them. Greener pastures then end up being shit brown.

az_patriot's picture

Forced? FORCED?  Who are these fuck-wads?  Robots?  Idiots?  Just leave and find another job.  Yeah, it's easier said than done but you're not in prison.  Sheesh!

not dead yet's picture

Piss off. These people are doing it for many different reasons and I like that they are sharing their stories not to complain but to inform. We also get the conspiracy guys and their "insight" that the fix is in so the real estate people can get rich.

For weather and sights California they say can't be beat, which is why many live there best they can. They can live where I do where from Nov to April it pretty much sucks and a lot of the rest of the year sucks too so Cali does have it's appeal. Imagine how many people would be living in that state if they weren't putting restrictions on housing, the real reason why there's lack of development. The RE get rich as a consequence. Instead of the current 39 million one could double that or more if wide open development were to be had years ago which government and it's citizens didn't want. Turn paradise into just another barrio. They already have far too many parking lots, which the freeways are much of the day, so why bring in more people to create more headaches for those that already live there.

Over the years far too many towns and cities across the US have had unlimited development and the quality of life in these places went in the shitter. Thus we have many places where they limit development to maintain the quality of living there rather than sacrifice it on the altar of development and expansion. The conspiracy boys will complain the fix was in for the rich to get richer but the reality is the rich get richer with uncontrolled development.

ThankUGartman's picture

Who decides the price of rent or real estate. They say supply and demand but at some point there has to be enough people who not only can't afford it but simply don't want to pay it. Imo, after the 2008 bust there were a lot of banks buying up foreclosures and have them on their balance sheet. How many govt programs have there been enabling homeowners to stay in their houses and not default. Quite a few. If you own a home good for you but if you don't good luck ever being able to afford one. Most homeowners could not afford the house they live in if they had to buy it at today's market prices. I'm all for saving ones money and refusing to pay out of control rents. Get a gym membership, work out and shower there. 35$ month. Fed is screwed if there's another mortgage bust. They need prices high to not only generate more property taxes for local govts but to keep their head above water too with all their investments. Lots of pink slips being issued for educators in LA OC area for next year. That's a lot of foreclosures if they lose their jobs. 18 yrs or less tenure getting them. On the other hand I also know someone who works in the financial services field who just bought aa 5 mil house and leases a 4500/mo masserati. Got rich off other people's money the American dream and he's not even jooish.

I watched the Kentucky Derby on the TV for ten minutes.

Some people drank some mint julips.

Some horse won the race.

4 bedroom house out in the sticks, $500/month plus 1/4 acre of land. But I have to drive 40 min to get to work. I expect riots this summer in the big cities, I don't see any darkies around here. Plus, all the neighbors watch out for each other, and they are armed! They might not have masters and PhD's; but they are decent, hardworking people you would not want to fuck with.

Who has a career now-of-days?  We all sit at a card table trying to figure out how to keep from being ejected from the game.  "If I only work harder, I'll make it".
