FBI In Turmoil Over Comey Ouster; Chaos Ensues As The Search For New Director Gets Underway

Tyler Durden's picture

As we reported last night, pretty much no one within the FBI had the slightest idea that Comey's firing was coming.  Even Comey himself, according to the New York Times, learned of his dismissal on the news and thought it was just a prank.

Not surprisingly, this sudden and shocking ouster of an FBI director that has led an agency of 56 U.S. field offices and 30,000 employees for 6.5 years has created some turmoil inside the FBI.  Agency staff scheduled an emergency high-level meeting last night amid speculation about who would replace Comey in the top job and explore next steps for the law-enforcement agency.

One top FBI official told Reuters that the FBI had no idea the Trump administration was considering dismissing Comey and the news “took even top officials by surprise.”

Of course, with Comey's dismissal coming right in the middle of an investigation into Russian election meddling, the sudden move by Trump has drawn intense backlack from the left with even some Republicans calling the timing 'troubling.'

Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was expected to step in for now, but he is unlikely to be nominated by Trump for the director's post, said two former FBI officials.

Bon

Several names have arisen as potential Comey replacements including Dana Boente, the number 3 at the DOJ, and Trey Gowdy, a Republican Representative in Congress.  That said, given the suspicions around the timing of Comey's ouster, we suspect that any replacement will have to be viewed as somewhat non-partisan.  The new director must be appointed by Trump and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

One possible contender for director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation is Dana Boente, No. 3 at the Justice Department and former acting attorney general, said the two former FBI officials.

Other potential choices include Republican Representative Trey Gowdy, a former prosecutor who led a congressional inquiry into former secretary of state and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s role in the 2012 attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Close campaign allies of Trump include former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, Sheriff David Clarke. But both men would be seen as highly political nominees for an agency designed to be independent.

"The White House has to avoid all the politicos if they are going to get a nominee through the Senate," said one of the former FBI officials.

Should be a fun-filled day with plenty of mainstream media outrage.  We simply can't wait for Maxine Waters to re-assert her calls for Trump's immediate impeachment.

Peanutz at the FBI should be afraid.

They should be VERY afraid.

localsavage's picture

If they weren't totally corrupt, there wouldn't be a problem.  They would go to work and do the job of serving the people.

CJgipper's picture

Exactly.  If there's actually chaos, then he hasn't gotten rid of the whole roblem yet.

RiverRoad's picture

There's actually a lot of folks at the FBI and CIA high-fiving each other today.

Watch closely.  There's your civil war.

I've worked executive staff to two governor's and this article is obviously hyped up bullshit. Just like a governor firing a commissioner, or a commissioner firing a director, which happens all the time, this caused NO chaos. Yes, the FBI is curious, yes they had a meeting to make sure they stay on course, and yes they have a chain of command they will follow within their organization so they will move forward without missing a beat.

Must be short on real news.

FBI In Turmoil Over Comey Ouster; Chaos Ensues As The Search For New Director Gets Underway

My response: GOOD!!!! DRAIN THE SWAMP. FBI DIRECTOR IS A GOOD PLACE TO START!!

Winston Churchill's picture

Serving the people ?

You've been watching too much Hollywierd.

The secret police serve the party, the one party, not the people.

The FBI is the US Stasi, always was, and always will be.

Do you really have no critical thinking skillls at all ?

HuffPo needs you.

Gowdy.

Then indict McCabe.

mc888's picture

As long as McCabe is AD, every nominee will be stonewalled.

McCabe is bought and paid for by the Clinton Cartel via McCauliffe. They'll do everything they can to block nominees and keep their boy in there.

The only way to move forward is fire McCabe.

According to Clapper, the Political unmasking came from the FBI.

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/clapper-intel-community-stands-by-find...

On the issue of unmasking, Clapper said there are times when U.S. citizens are unmasked for legitimate reasons, and said in 2016, 1,934 people were unmasked. But he said leaks of this information are unauthorized, and said he has never "knowingly exposed classified information in an inappropriate manner."

has never "knowingly exposed classified information in an inappropriate manner."

Because to me it was, like, TOTALLY appropriate !

"what ? Like with a cloth"?
"at this point, what does it matter" ?

Getting Senate votes? All you need is the NSA in your corner and good luck with that one. Wait ....

Serious question:  If you were the pres and wanted to put someone in charge of the FBI who will "Drain the Swamp", how do you get 51 Senators to vote Yes on confirmation when most likely >95 of the Senators are corrupt and are the swamp that would be drained?

Doom Porn Star's picture

There are far more effective methods.

RagaMuffin's picture

Interview the Head of the Hillary server investigation. Find those who disagreed with comey based upon the law and choose one. If one really wants to drain the swamp, simply enforcing the law would be a start. Even if you choose well, they will have institutional inertia to deal with

Paper Mache's picture

Can't Mr Prez an Mr Vice Prez just do what they did to get Gorsuch through the process?

bowie28's picture

Wasn't that tactic just to allow confirmation with simple majority (51) rather than 2/3 vote?

While a Senator may not be thrilled with Gorsuch on the SC it is not a direct threat to them so their vote could be bought with some other favor.

If you're talking about putting someone in charge of FBI that will actually do the job of investigating corruption and referring cases to DOJ for indictment then that's a whole different situation for a corrupt Senator.  How you going to convince him to vote for his own likely indictment?

This is a big test for Trump and those of us who were on the Trump train but have come to believe we were duped.  Getting rid of Comey could be a good thing but only if he is replaced with someone better.  However, even attempting to do that will put Trump in direct confrontation with the Senate which is infested with corrupt swamp creatures (Dems and Repubs).

Going to be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Also curious to see if McCabe the acting director will show up at the Senate hearings.  With Comey gone he will now get some exposure and publicity which is also a good thing.

Trey Gowdy would be a huge WIN for America.

tmosley's picture

Lots of people seem to dislike that idea, but as I recall, he did a hell of a job taking down the mob. Trump knows him well, and I think they get along.

Might not be a good choice if he gives heed to the wailing of the peanutz, as they will complain about corruption because they are both from New York.

Dunno about Gowdy. Might be ok if his seat was safe and would go to a non-RINO.

bowie28's picture

The problem with Rudy is 9/11.

Most likely he was not involved and was threatened or otherwise coerced into playing along with the official story but then he spent the next 10 years portraying himself as a hero because he happened to be the Mayor when the false flag was conducted.

Unless he intends to re-open the investigation and correct the record on 9/11 he is nothing more than a red team shill and an opportunist that used the deaths of thousands of New Yorkers to advance his political ambitions.

laser's picture

I would miss Gowdy asking real questions in congress.
