Chinese Fighter Jets Conduct "Unprofessional" Inverted Intercept Of US Radiation Detector Over Yellow Sea

Tyler Durden's picture

In the second incident between US and Chinese planes this year, two Chinese Su-30 fighter jets came within 150 feet of a U.S. Air Force WC-135 radiation detection plane while it was flying over the Yellow Sea in international airspace on Wednesday, CNN reports, citing an unidentified U.S. official.

The Chinese jets came within 150 feet of the US plane, with one of the Su-30s flying inverted, or upside down, directly above the American plane, the official said.

As CNN reports, the US plane involved was an Air Force WC-135 jet.

Dubbed the "Constant Phoenix," the four-engine WC-135 jet looks for distinctive elements a nuclear test of any type would emit into the air. The collected samples can be analyzed to determine exactly what occurred.

The WC-135 has been regularly deployed on routine missions in Northeast Asia, according to the US official. The planes have been used in the past to gather evidence of possible nuclear tests by North Korea.

There was a modest reaction in USDJPY on the headline...

This is the second 'intercept' this year. In February, US defense officials said there was an "unsafe" close encounter between a US Navy P-3 Orion aircraft and a Chinese surveillance aircraft over the South China Sea. In that incident, a US official told CNN the US Navy plane had to alter course to ensure there wasn't a collision with what one official said was a People's Liberation Army Air Force KJ-200. The planes came within 1,000 feet of each other, US officials said.

And with a second carrier heading towards the Korean Peninsula, we suspect more are inevitable (despite US officials saying close encounters between US and Chinese forces are extremely rare).

That huge WC-135 is needed to look for radiation from a nuclear blast?  BS. A Cesna with a cottonn filter and Black and Decker vacuum would work just as well.

null's picture

Fair point.
Probably not "needed". They could have gotten an OSHA exemption, but then PR nightmare when that leaked.

But really, who expects them to not put on the pretense of standing up for their client state. They are unlikely irritated at the "extra space for bad stuff".

USA client states: Japan and South Korea.  China client state: North Korea.

That aircraft is anything but huge. It's nothing more than an old Boeing 707 in military guise. Compared to some of today's aircraft, it's actually pretty small.

Big? Yes. Yuuge? No way.

sinbad2's picture

Take the wings off and it would fit inside an AN-225.

cbxer55's picture

There's not a whole lot that won't fit in an AN-225. LOL!

zhandax's picture

My first thought on seeing that picture, "that looks like a 707".

cbxer55's picture

There's still quite a few aircraft flying around that were built on 707's. E-3, E-6, E-8, KC-135 are some that immediately come to mind.

I work on E-6'S myself, and believe me, when you work on them their age is readily apparent.

It's looking for RADIATION.

Think outside the BOX for a moment.

There is a WHOLE SPECTRUM of radiation, you know. EVERYTHING 'radiates'.

I have a pellet stove that radiates in the percieved 'heat' spectrum.

Verizon is in the process of setting up transmit/recieve towers that pick up and transmit RADIATED transmissions in the 5 gigahertz band.

I pesonally own a Sharp 'Carousel' device that heats food by RADIATING the enclosed area within with MICROWAVES.

MHZ and GHZ transmissions are picked up due to the RADIATION of their particular AMPLIFICATION using attuned receivers...

The turbofan engines of the C-135 (various designations) RADIATE in heat and sound (stand behind one when it is running).

D'ya KEN, Laddie?

The CHINESE don't want the AMERICANS to be able to pick up the transmissions from the state-run media, perhaps...

BESIDES, the operating range of a Cessna 172 is far too short!

THIS plane (the WC-135) is equipped to 'multi-task' it's 'radiation' detection in WAY more broad of a 'spectrum' than the Chinese want to give up. It's like, if the CHINESE overflew the coast of Washington State, CONUS, with a KNOWN 'radiation-detecting plane' within 70 miles, what would the Americans do? Would they ADMIT that HANFORD was a leaking seive of deadly poisonous human-killing and life-killing RADIATION that could end all life on the planet as we KNOW IT?

NO! Of COURSE not. The CONUS MIC would dispatch 'a patrol' to warn them off (THEY and WE BOTH don't want the SHEOPLE to be AWARE of this type of stuff).

How do you say 'Tom Cruise' in Mandarin?

A 'Black And Decker' vacuum with a cotton filter is now MANDATORY for humans (if they want to breathe clean air, that is). It is now MADE IN CHINA (thanks to CLINTON).

Learn this concept, and learn to THINK with it.

MontgomeryScott's picture

That's a story I never heard.

I DID hear about the AWACS that was 'forced down' under BUSH the YOUNGER, though.

They DIDN'T ship THAT one back (as far as I heard).

Fucking CLINTON was moments away from being impeached for cutting a deal to sell off Long Beach Naval Shipyards (CA.) to COSCO, two weeks in, back in '92. The FOIL of the time was the fact that he stopped ALL air traffic at LAX for about an hour with Air Force One (while he got a 'HAIRCUT'). Long Beach Naval Shipyards is now a deepwater container ship port of call (um, I think that COSCO runs it now).

The Chinese now have F-15 and F-16 and F-18 duplicates (AND all the advanced avionics to go with them). They seem to have made some improvements over OUR versions (thanks to the Russians), like canards and thrust vectoring and stuff. The RUSSIANS still have the BEST stolen technology (they keep that to themselves).

WELL, WE have the TR3B (and some other stuff) now. ROH-ROH!

I see THIS story as a deflection, as far as what is ongoing within the realm of 'middle space' (outside Earth's atmosphere, and as far as the Kuiper Belt [at least]).

LOOK ! Chinese pilots can fly upside down!

It doesn't matter though (because their dicks are still smaller than average).

RANDY NEWMAN, and 'Short People':

They build good railroads, though!

Thank you Montgomery. I had forgotten how much fun I had in college with Randy Newman songs.
