Mexico's Crime Wave Spirals Out Of Control As Auto Thefts Surge

Tyler Durden's picture

For a country that generates roughly 10% of its GDP from tourism, mostly from Americans, Mexico's surging violent crime rates, courtesy of its notoriously brutal drug cartels, is quickly becoming a 'yuge' economic issue.  As we recently noted, more Americans have been killed while traveling abroad in Mexico than any other country, by a staggering margin, no less.

And while Mexico would love to shake it's bad rap when it comes to violence, the negative datapoints just continue to pile up.  The latest such data comes courtesy of Mexico's car insurance association Amis, which found that auto thefts spiked in March 2017 by over 20% and current stand at multi-year highs.  Per Bloomberg:

In March, the number of auto thefts rose 21 percent from the same month a year earlier, according to numbers from the car insurance association known as Amis. Meanwhile, the recovery rate -- the percentage of stolen cars that police were able to recover -- dropped to its lowest since at least 2005.

The car-theft trend “will continue throughout the second quarter which will, in turn, have an impact on first-half returns," Francisco Uriostegui, an analyst at Moody’s who helped write the report, said in an interview. “In the end, it’s the customer that will have to pay more, for a higher premium and it’ll be due to a drop in the recovery rate for these vehicles."

And while auto thefts may not seem all that threatening, it is just another datapoint that suggests an alarming trend in overall violence in a country that already leads the U.S. State Department's ranking for most travel warnings.

Oddly enough, no amount of State Department warnings have yet caused Americans to curb their appetite for those cheap Cabo vacations...

Though we suspect it's only a matter of time.

Or today you could have gone to Times Square to see a Mexican driver in action.  At least he  wasn't drunk.

All the more reason to make the US more like Mexico right?  Question: If your country sucks and you move to the US,  why should we make our country like yours?

You are probably not a drug trafficker though.

It doesn't have to be this way. Just open the border and let them in for the several million sitting in fields, vacant stadiums and anywhere else they're stuffing them. We got millions of them. Probably never to be used.

And if your car refuses to remote-lock in a parking lot, then drive it away not just leave it unattended even briefly. Jammers are cheap now.

How about that Chicago!!!!

500 homicides. 9 months. 1 American city.

NoDebt's picture

Dude, Chicago is in Mexico.  Everyone who passed the "find North Korea on the map" test knows that.

obviously a lie, if that stat were true, Black lives matters would be leading protests in the streets of chicago and staging  all  kinds of disruptions at  city hall....  oh wait.

vato poco's picture

one really cool thing I learnt on the internet recently is that, as bad as Chiraq is, Baltimo', N'awlins, St. Louiey, and Deetroit have a murder rate that's 2-3x higher, when factored as a '# per 100K of pop' stat. Wow! That's a lot of dead folks!

Looking closely at this, I believe I have found a common thread that runs through ALL these shithole cities, something that somehow *causes* all these murders to happen. something I've noticed NO ONE in the media is willing to address.

They ALL have the letter "o" in their names. Every single one.

NoDebt's picture

If only there was something to help keep that from freely crossing our border.  Like maybe a wall or something.

logicalman's picture

If you see a wall being built around you, you have to ask if it's to keep others out or you in.

Every silver lining has a cloud.

This is the best fucking news ever! Now Ford GM and other makers know how to get rid of thier fucking over-manufactured inventory so thier next quarters can show big profits! Store these cars in Mexico, insure them and watch these fuckers vanish! Even i want to get rid  my car. Need an address?

Dilluminati's picture

Depedning on the car you will get ass fucked by the insurance company, they will offer you peanuts for the loss 1/2 month later and then you go out and shop and are like WTF?  Nope, you'll get ass-raped by greedy cocksucking insurance company.  You need to cry injury to get anything from those fucks and almost HAVE TO DO SO because they are greedy crooked f0ckers with their KBB values and then the reality numbers.  The folks not greedy enough to work at Big Banks all work for the insurance companies.  Check out the KBB delta 2013 Impreza 75K and then Carmax, where the 6K go you wonder?? To the focking greedy ass insurance company.  You better go find your own f0cking car and then call cops and have the thing towed and inspected!  You'll save thousands, cops don't care, insurance company doesn't care, get a conceal carry and shoot the focker that tries and steals yours!

Archibald Buttle's picture

how many of these thefts are on subprime liar loans north of the border? perhaps arranged "transactions" and not exactly thefts, per se.

spaghetti at a wall sort of idea.

buttmint's picture

I hate to admit it, but you are spot on! I took a slightly diff approach: 15 years ago I dropped rego and insurance! Fuck it, just a scam.
I drive slowly and am home prior to 8pm. Anyone out on any street in USA is a cop target.

If one gets tailed by a black 'n white, put blinker on immediately to clear out of their short attention span as THEY SPEED to a donut shop of screwing someone's daughter.

If cop turns again to follow, say into a driveway, pop out immediately with a paper map.....hailing the cop. Thank them profusely for stopping to help you and offer up you legit license. Works like a charm.

Had a car stolen in Pittsburgh, cops initially didn't show for report.  Had to go down and report and then wait.  The insurance company was AWOL.  Wanted to wait first 48 hours and then two weeks.  Had stepson getup early Sunday morning and drive the area looking at public parking lots in a rental car (the insurance agreed to pay 15/day) and he found it.  The cops wanted it towed, and that cost another $50 (and at that time in the morning we wanted the car back and he wasn't leaving the renrtal car there) and then we had to re-inspect it, and it had a bad muffler which on that car was stainless so that f0cked us for more.. all said and done out 2k.  Insult to all the above was the insurance company.  F0cking mind numbing the entire ordeal, hours out of our lives and the cocksucker who stole it so far hasn't been apprehended!!!  I had prayed that the car would come back (find it) or the person who stole it was thrown through the windshield and f0cking dead!

When he gets to Saint Lious I'm going to go shop for a 380 for him and tell him shoot the f0cker next time, not going throuh this again!

I'd be willing to bet that a large number of the American victims of violent murder would be Chicanos that are involved in the drug trade. These numbers need to be broken down a bit further.

My brother a long time resident of Mexico was kidnapped robbed and beaten to death in Mazatlan.   7months later 3 out 4 of the killers are awiting trial.  The fourth is known by name photo and location yet he has not been arrested.

Mexico is dangerous and the authorities have no problem letting a murderer walk the streetsnow for 7 months.
