UK Government Moves Aggressively To Censor & Control The Internet

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

The following dystopian excerpts come from today’s UK Independent article titled, Theresa May to Create New Internet that Would Be Controlled and Regulated by Government:

Theresa May is planning to introduce huge regulations on the way the internet works, allowing the government to decide what is said online.

Particular focus has been drawn to the end of the manifesto, which makes clear that the Tories want to introduce huge changes to the way the internet works.

“Some people say that it is not for government to regulate when it comes to technology and the internet,” it states. “We disagree.”

Thanks for clearing that up.

Senior Tories confirmed to BuzzFeed News that the phrasing indicates that the government intends to introduce huge restrictions on what people can post, share and publish online.

The plans will allow Britain to become “the global leader in the regulation of the use of personal data and the internet”, the manifesto claims.

It comes just soon after the Investigatory Powers Act came into law. That legislation allowed the government to force internet companies to keep records on their customers’ browsing histories, as well as giving ministers the power to break apps like WhatsApp so that messages can be read.

The government now appears to be launching a similarly radical change in the way that social networks and internet companies work. While much of the internet is currently controlled by private businesses like Google and Facebook, Theresa May intends to allow government to decide what is and isn’t published, the manifesto suggests.

The manifesto even suggests that the government might stop search engines like Google from directing people to pornographic websites. “We will put a responsibility on industry not to direct users – even unintentionally – to hate speech, pornography, or other sources of harm,” the Conservatives write.

“Other sources of harm.” Can’t wait to see the ever-expanding government definition of that.

Perhaps most unusually they would be forced to help controversial government schemes like its Prevent strategy, by promoting counter-extremist narratives.

The manifesto also proposes that internet companies will have to pay a levy, like the one currently paid by gambling firms. Just like with gambling, that money will be used to pay for advertising schemes to tell people about the dangers of the internet, in particular being used to “support awareness and preventative activity to counter internet harms”, according to the manifesto.

The Conservatives will also seek to regulate the kind of news that is posted online and how companies are paid for it. If elected, Theresa May will “take steps to protect the reliability and objectivity of information that is essential to our democracy” – and crack down on Facebook and Google to ensure that news companies get enough advertising money.

If internet companies refuse to comply with the rulings – a suggestion that some have already made about the powers in the Investigatory Powers Act – then there will be a strict and strong set of ways to punish them.

Given how willing tech companies have been to comply with government spying in the past, it’ll be interesting to see how they respond to this dangerous, authoritarian power grab.

Speak for yourself.  I have no difficulty arguing against it.

TPTB control the "sovereign", and use it to constantly lead the economy toward Welfare/Warfare and away from creativity.  The result is enormous deficits, and therefore enormous debt,  and therefore misery for the Citizens, but not, of course, for TPTB.  Indeed, TPTB are paid the "interest" on the very debt that TPTB, acting as "sovereign", created.  The Citizens, on the other hand, are forced to pay that "interest" to TPTB, despite the fact that the Citizens did not borrow that money.

Thus it becomes necessary for TPTB to fill the land with spy cameras, to spy on the Citizens, who of course get ever angrier.  But TPTB place no spy cameras in the smoke-filled rooms where TPTB plan their next Welfare/Warfare heist.

mary mary's picture

Besides, this is the very argument that is being used right now to attack President Trump.  TPTB, acting as "sovereign", are attacking the President whom the People of the United States Constitutionally elected, for "not following TPTB's rules for controlling information into and out of TPTB's sovereign country".  That is, for not bowing down to TPTB, instead of to the Citizens who elected President Trump.  TPTB's "Russian Bogeyman" attacks on the President amount to TPTB telling American Citizens that their votes count for nothing, and that they are the slaves of TPTB, and better get used to it!

Um. You're arguing for totalitarianism. That the government has the right to control everything. From where does the state get that right?

Might makes right?

No.

The people have those rights.

The tech companies have already put in numerous controls. GOOGLE has been perfecting the art of controlling Search Results. I remember back in late 90s and up until about 2009, you would get an assortment of search results from any given word or phrase typed in. Now, you mostly just get the same Websites.

That was done purposely.

<Meta tag> Search engine spiders, back when there was a minute influence by the webmaster. I built a site called crazyassglass late 90s. Was getting 40K+ hits a month. Until about 5 years ago it had bounced around as a porn portal and I only maintained it for a year after start up. I knew where it was headed then and just gave up.

I was also working 1 to 3 part time jobs and blowing glass to sell from that site. Oh and taking 15-23 community college credits. Jack of all master of none (debt).

20 yrs later: drunk. I'd like to thank ZH.

At one point a few years ago didn't the UK have the greatest number per capita of surveilance cameras in public places?

The British have always been a bit too ready to surrender to the stupid demands of authority figures. Maybe it's a remnant of their Germanic/Anglo-Saxon order-loving heritage. It creates a bizarre schizophrenia: they'll produce wonderful freedom-loving critics, philosophers and authors like George Orwell whilst at the same time getting all orgasmic about order, authority figures, petty things like uniforms. They're a weird bunch, for sure. Perhaps its due to highly heterogeneous ancestry: Germanic, Celtic, Roman, a bit of Irish thrown in...not to mention the current influxes of Asian and African. UK has been multi-ethnic/multi-cultural for over 2,000 years -- and it shows the weaknesses of this fairly clearly. As well as strengths, has to be said.

land_of_the_few's picture

Yes, and they are usually SOL if the little people ask for some footage to help with, let's say, taxi drivers assualting cyclists or something like that.

They are there purely to spy on the proles with a bit of feminism-all-men-are-rapists thrown in.

Post WWI thing.

If you look at UK election results, the liberal party... real liberalism, not American social democrat "liberalism") died and was replaced over the following 40 years with socialism.

Liberalism in terms of personal liberty, is dead. Today what we have is social democracy, not liberal democracies, and social democracies/democratic socialism is nothing more than fascism lite.

People have difficulty understanding what fascism is... That's because it's all around them, they're living it.

The people have a very powerful and effective weapon against this. Simply disconnect. Better to get nothing at all than propaganda. Stop watching TV, don't buy the newspapers. The Deep State becomes powerless to affect your thinking and behavior.

Librarian's picture

Shouldn't you also stop reading online news and blogs too?

There may be a teensy flaw in your logic.

mary mary's picture

The problem with disconnecting is that your local government will take advantage by levying a host of new taxes and regulations, and giving your money to the local Church and Synagogue members, and your business to the local Chamber of Commerce members.  This is happening everywhere, always.  Just follow your local news a few months to track the latest theft.  I'm sure there's one being ushered through your City or County right now, because they keep a long list, and just run them through one after another.  Unfortunately, your local newspaper and TV stations will be cheerleading each theft.  But at least that's how you find out about it.

“Other sources of harm.”

Similar to the Ray Bradbury short story about the "mechanics" from what I remember. A race of autonomous robots that were created to "protect people from harm". It ended that they took over all control and essentially destroyed the spirit and essence of humanity, all in the name of "protecting"

Oh, and I could be charged for writing that here if published and sold... for questioning a narrative that has many legitimate questions left unanswered...

I am beginning to suspect the source of most of the warmongering and evil in the world is the old world United Kingdom elite.

Austrian Peter's picture

You needn't suspect - it is true.  The greatest evil in the world today is that of HMG Establishment, Civil Service et al - I know I worked for them and can tell you that 300 years of Empire has honed their skills to perfection.  USA is a baby in comparison, having no significant history.  It is through history that one learns and there is none better than the UK.  People generally think that the UK is a vassal of the USA - but in practice it is the other way round.

In Argentina they have the mythical Malvinas agency used since the time of Peron to further their so-called sovereignty claim. They make great use of the internet in furthering their sovereignty aspirations throughout the world.

But the truth does hurt them and the WWW allows their claims to be refuted.

"Control and censor the internet?"

They're having a laugh mate. These old fools, May included, have no fucking idea. They're stuck in some 1960s timewarp where the 'State' knows best. They can't comprehend the power of the internet, they have no idea. It scares them, they can't control it, they never will. These policies are meant to placate the technologically dumber, greyer members of the electorate that is all. The internet is bigger than them, we are bigger than them. They are fucked, they are clutching at straws.

vladiki's picture

She's right. Gates years ago said anonymity would be the death of the internet. The idea that their be zero censorship is very new. We can't handle it. Too many of us get too stupid when no one knows who we really are. The US did better in the 200 years before this. Skip the '1984' outrage. May will do OK. Optimum is never maximum. Plenty of freedom.

The US was founded on ideas put forth by Anonymous Pamphleteers faggot. Also, in today's PC culture people are not free to speak their minds. They would be mercilessly prosecuted by the busybodies of the fake left.

For example, this forum has some of the best commentary on the internet but only because the posters are anonymous. Nobody can speak publicly, they would immediately lose their jobs.

Thus creating the final push to a fully functioning and fully adopted, decentralized, peer-to-peer internet.

Thanks governments! You assume that people are stationary targets when history, and our very nature, suggests that we aren't.

What would really piss off the Gooberment ...

Everybody stops using the Internet

All ISP's would be dead in one month

And the Gooberment has lost a major component in spying on people.

RovingGrokster's picture

If the government gets effective control of the Internet, it will die anyway, and they will have to pump in increasing amounts of taxpayer money to keep it creaking along.
This is why Net Neutrality had to go, and we should praise Trump and Ajit Pai to the skies for killing it.

JailBanksters's picture

Problem is ... and it's a simple one

People are addicted to technology

Just count how many people can not even cross a street without staring at the phone.

They can't even eat a hamburger without a phone in one hand and a burger in other.

from the Indy article:  "most unusually they would be forced to help controversial government schemes like its Prevent strategy, by promoting counter-extremist narratives."

Counter-extremism isn't about terrorism proper -  which obviously is fantastically useful to authoritarian governments which want to police their domestic populations, it's about those who dissent from and criticise actual power.   May will get a lot of support for this from the anti-free speech left wing and jewish lobbies who are also at the forefront of pushing such things (Moshe Kantor and that mob).

Governments are now focusing almost completely on turning the average citizen into a criminal, whilst doing f#ck-all effective about real criminals. This is classic displacement activity.  It's in everything they do. Raising taxes whilst ignoring "tax-avoiders", printing more money rather than working out how to save it.

They are all cowardly control freaks. All mouth, no trousers.
