UK Government Moves Aggressively To Censor & Control The Internet

Authored by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

The following dystopian excerpts come from today’s UK Independent article titled, Theresa May to Create New Internet that Would Be Controlled and Regulated by Government:

Theresa May is planning to introduce huge regulations on the way the internet works, allowing the government to decide what is said online.

Particular focus has been drawn to the end of the manifesto, which makes clear that the Tories want to introduce huge changes to the way the internet works.

“Some people say that it is not for government to regulate when it comes to technology and the internet,” it states. “We disagree.”

Thanks for clearing that up.

Senior Tories confirmed to BuzzFeed News that the phrasing indicates that the government intends to introduce huge restrictions on what people can post, share and publish online.

The plans will allow Britain to become “the global leader in the regulation of the use of personal data and the internet”, the manifesto claims.

It comes just soon after the Investigatory Powers Act came into law. That legislation allowed the government to force internet companies to keep records on their customers’ browsing histories, as well as giving ministers the power to break apps like WhatsApp so that messages can be read.

The government now appears to be launching a similarly radical change in the way that social networks and internet companies work. While much of the internet is currently controlled by private businesses like Google and Facebook, Theresa May intends to allow government to decide what is and isn’t published, the manifesto suggests.

The manifesto even suggests that the government might stop search engines like Google from directing people to pornographic websites. “We will put a responsibility on industry not to direct users – even unintentionally – to hate speech, pornography, or other sources of harm,” the Conservatives write.

“Other sources of harm.” Can’t wait to see the ever-expanding government definition of that.

Perhaps most unusually they would be forced to help controversial government schemes like its Prevent strategy, by promoting counter-extremist narratives.

The manifesto also proposes that internet companies will have to pay a levy, like the one currently paid by gambling firms. Just like with gambling, that money will be used to pay for advertising schemes to tell people about the dangers of the internet, in particular being used to “support awareness and preventative activity to counter internet harms”, according to the manifesto.

The Conservatives will also seek to regulate the kind of news that is posted online and how companies are paid for it. If elected, Theresa May will “take steps to protect the reliability and objectivity of information that is essential to our democracy” – and crack down on Facebook and Google to ensure that news companies get enough advertising money.

If internet companies refuse to comply with the rulings – a suggestion that some have already made about the powers in the Investigatory Powers Act – then there will be a strict and strong set of ways to punish them.

Given how willing tech companies have been to comply with government spying in the past, it’ll be interesting to see how they respond to this dangerous, authoritarian power grab.

Nothing should surprise us about Theresa May. She is not a traditional Conservative as most people understand that to be. She is actually a TINO (Tory In Name Only), another Statist like her predecessor David Cameron. Liberal Lefties if you will, but not as Far Left as the Labour Party. They believe in "nanny/daddy" knows best policies which plays out as authoritarian government wrapped up in Conservative Cute-Speak and public school accents and monied families.

May's determination to push thru Brexit is not really because she believes in it, after all she supported Bremain back when. It's because she sees electoral votes in it and an opportunity to beef up her power base across the country. A consummate political opportunist.

As Home Secretary she screwed up Immigration big time. To this day - despite it being highlighted as a huge black hole years ago - Immigration still do not count people coming in and count people going out. This means that when Pedro Gonzalez arrives as a tourist, his passport is checked but his arrival is not recorded. When he leaves (unless he decides to remain in the UK illegaly), his departure is not recorded. So Immigration has no idea of who's in and who's out and no idea of how many illegal immigrants there are.

Snoopers Charter II was her baby as PM and followed Cameron's earlier cancellation of Snoopers Charter I because he admitted it was too intrusive. S/C II is even more intrusive and this new crackpot idea of a new "controlled Internet" is far more intrusive still. But she'll sell it by dragging in heart bleeding comments about porn sites et al. Think of the children!

The parasitic and corrupt elitists have always considered freedom a crime. Freedom does not serve the parasites. So, it must be made illegal.

The population of the world has not become too large. However, it appears that the parasite class has become too large, strong and corrupt. They threaten the world because they do not know how to and refuse to learn how to live in harmony with the world. They dominate, exploit and corrupt instead.

They tell the slaves that we are the problem. What a joke! The slaves are not corrupt and we do not defile with intention on a mass scale.

Woman in charge. Se Nigel Farage, you fought all those years to free Britain from the EU, only to give up your seat to that dumb whore. Now Britain will be even worse "democracy" than with EU bureaucrats. sigh...

smacker's picture

This has always been my greatest concern about Britain. Whilst I hate the very concept of the EU and have zero confidence in its ability to run or manage anything, let alone the economics of 27 countries, Britain's own political elites are no better when it comes to such matters as the Internet and many other things relating to personal freedoms etc. By Brexiting, Brits are jumping out of the fire and back into the frying pan.

In the midst of her re-election campaign, it is astounding that Theresa May would release this particular feline from captivity!

We know that Lefties are sneaky and untruthful, and only win elections by fooling the public. It seems that the right are just plain stupid, by honestly declaring an authoritarian streak, they are setting themselves up for failure.

If the Brits vote for this level of thought control, then the spirit of the Magna Carta and Bill of Rights is dead forever. Wake up sheeple - you are defenseless in your own homes, you cannot speak your mind about the unspeakable acts of Islamists, and now you won't even be able to read what you want.

Can Farage take advantage of this? does he have time?

waspwench's picture

We have to vote for May in order to get out of the EU.   May knows this and so she is using the opportunity to cement some very unpalatable policies, BUT, once we are out we can change our votes, so.........

Nigel, unfortunately, does not have time to do anything so close to the election, BUT, he will still be there after the election, so.........

Politicians are among the most ignorant and uneducated people on the planet. That the old May dame imagines that she can gulag the internet shows her own dismal level of intelligence. She will be toast anyway because of the BREXIT fiasco and before that quagmire is waded the internet will be the least of her worries.

No comment needed. Everyone in UK lost their dental records based on ransom malware from NSA program leaked in UK. As if was surprisingly obvious that you never went to the dentist in first place. I kid, fight back to our NSA. Leafy and Pyro are my sarcastic non DNA children. I love them both. Not forget Sam Tucker from Australia. All good kids, love them as if I was there parent. Cool kids. :p

Most persons do not understand what the internet is.  To try to regulate what is published is not possible.   The material will just be published from a server in another jurisdiction if England implements a private monitored network.

Are you still not using VPN?   And not using private browsing with cookie manager on tab close wipe?   Email needs to be encrypted.  Why is a USPS letter secure but not an email?  Remember regular email is like sending post card.  Wake up!

Faeriedust's picture

No, I don't waste my time and money on VPN or secure anything.  I do nothing online that the NSA is not welcome to waste their time, money and effort plowing through.  And by often dropping BOMBS into conversations like this, I make sure that their efforts are wasted, thereby doing my bit to hasten imperial overstretch.  They're welcome to my opinions on modern life and government stupidity.  They might learn something.

Of course, as a writer, my interests are numerous and varied.  Today I'm researching the etymology of the Rus and Varangian nomens as evidence for their ethnic contributions to women's costume in medieval Gnezdovo.  Last year, it was WWI  and WWI weaponry with reference to performance and availability in Transylvania in 1938.  And specific rituals for how to become a werewolf, although it turned out that I really had a better handle on that than anything already published.  Although I did discover a genetic basis for the bersark syndrome.  And some interesting material on allergic reactions to early 20th century medicinal silver compounds.

Like I said, NSA is welcome to read the browsing records of a 3500-year-old witch.  If they're not at least a couple of centuries old, the analysts will probably learn something the government would prefer they not know.

They compile lists of those posting on anti-establishment sites, regardless of what is actually written.

Browsec VPN is free and works through browser only and does not mess with overall network connections like regular VPNs.

My computer has 2 IP numbers. . .Explorer has the real number, Chrome a different one.  Now I am in Netherlands with a new IP number.  Now in Singapore with new number.  The change in instant.

LOL.  The inventor of Modern Democracy can't take the heat of the real thing.  Oh no!  We can't let the proles have access to uncontrolled information!  Look what happens -- they vote against us in our "free" elections between Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumber!

A genuinely free press spells the doom of oligarchies everywhere.  An informed populace is a restive and rebellious populace.  For the good of The Nation (which is, after all, a convenient fiction to unify and control the minds of subjects and exists mainly to organize our authority and license to extort aka "tax"), we must prevent The Little People from Knowing Too Much.

It's time to start processing the paperwork to canonize Edward Snowden.

Dave Whiteman's picture

Our problem- evil- in a word- MONOPOLY.

Information monopoly [including government indoctrination centers- "public schools"]

Money monopoly

Destroyng these is at the top of the to do list.

Free press [free flow of information] and competing monies destroys monarchy, oligarchy, and most shitbirds.

Look toward a fusion of libertarianism [liberalism in Europe] and White Nationalism.

ZH does know that by not SSL'ing the website Big Brother can monitor the readers of it?   SSL it!

css1971's picture

As if they can't at any time put a proxy in front of any SSL site which looks just like that site cryptographically. Why do you think SSL is designed as a hierarchy?

You'd have to use a WOT mechanism.

smacker's picture

I believe it's been known for quite some time that SSL (as in HTTPS) has a back door. It only really protects you from man-in-the-middle attacks.

Attention government toadies: PISS OFF. The internet cannot be locked down. The leaky sieve works both ways. You can censor your own websites and your own routes. That's it. You corporate dildos fuck yourselves first and hardest. The rest of mankind can get along fine without you. If you attempt to tax me to fund this you'll find your purse emptied, like all the other times.

The West only won the battle against fascism in WW2, but lost the war and has become exactly what it purported to be fighting against.  The UK is the leading edge,,, the US not far behind.

I am happy that I am now in the winter of life, as this world will soon be unbearable. The super wave is in college right now and is eliminating any semblance of civility such as ones right to speak, equality of the races and sexes, and discrimination. Already in these 'schools' there are areas only for 'colored people',,, in California freedom of speech has been eliminated,,, government has eliminated freedom of travel, freedom of privacy, freedom of defending yourself, a citizens right to trial (NDAA), right of property ownership (taxes),  the right to life of those whom haven't made it out of the womb.

All jobs and their associated skills have been exported. The new word for slavery is low wage earners. Over half of working age Americans are on the government teat in one fashion or another.  Most graduates from government schools cannot do basic math.  Any job that can be done by a machine is putting even more Americans on the government dole. The Intel gangs (government and private) are spying on everything your doing and/or saying. Soon cash will be gone and you will be a 100pct controlled puppet.

The new Fascism will make all previous dark ages look like a walk in the park,,, will make Hitler, Mao look like Boy Scouts. There is nothing worse than humans thinking their gods.

Those poor pedophiles in the British government!

It is unfair that their evil and sick acts can be published on the internet. But fret not! The government will protect them!

Interesting wherever Jews get a foothold hate-speech laws, i.e. censorship follows.

When they overthrew the Czar in Russia, for example, anti-semitism was made a capital offense.

How much longer before the same happens in the U.K. and elsewhere?

The solution was not final enough many believe! As for my time on this planet... there is real good cause for that notion! Personally, now that I know for a material fact that Israel had a massive role in 911... those cock sucking jews ought to be nuked into oblivion! We know they were materially involved to the highest order. I say remove the UK's proxy state off this living earth once and for all. I'm only disappointed we can't start today! LOL... and I thought the US was in the business of killing terrorists!

The British should feel proud their Queen cares so much about them.  The law prohibits them from even arguing getting rid of the Queen, so how much freedom have the Brits ever had?  The British lower classes have done much more poorly than the lower classes in continental countries over the last 500 years or so.  They always have had much bigger scum bag leaders.  All government means slavery.  The word itself means to steer the mind.

In Great Britain, 'conservative" means big government lovers who favor big royalist and oligarchic institutions.  This inititiative illustrates why "liberal" and "conservative" are such misnomers in America, and the "right-left" political spectrum paradigm taught in most schools is nothing more than leftist propaganda.  The true dichotomy is statist versus libertarian.

1.) Does the British government even possess the technological expertise to "control the Internet"?

2.) If the British government succeeded, would not ISPs simply re-route most Internet traffic around Britain?

3.) The private sector would soon create a NEW Internet - perhaps on the idea of a partial "block chain" where all IP addresses and ISPs are contacted UNTIL the data sought is sent and received - encrypted, of course.

People tend to forget that true, functioning constitutional democracies and constitutional republics are rare EXCEPTIONS in history and seldom last very long until corrupted, degenerating into an oligarchy of "elites". Even Thomas Jefferson predicted that a new revolution would be necessary every 20 years or so:

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” Thomas Jefferson

Those who seek a "new order" or "new-world order" are NOT new! Indeed, "tyranny by a few" is the oldest form of government - it is the NORM; not the exception.  OLIGARCHIES , with "elites" having the power and money, may be displaced for brief periods of time. But they ALWAYS return, often at the will  of the people, with their freedom usually exchanged for alleged "safety".

In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way.” Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945); 32nd U.S. President

“Those (who) seek to establish systems of Government based on the regimentation of all Human Beings by a handful of individual rulers. . . call this a NEW ORDER. It is not new and it is not order.”  Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945); 32nd U.S. President

“If we ever pass out as a great nation we ought to put on our tombstone, ‘America died from a delusion that she has moral leadership.’” Will Rogers (1879-1935) American Humorist, Actor and Author

“I should like merely to understand how it happens that so many men, so many villages, so many cities, so many nations, sometimes suffer under a single tyrant who has no other power than the power they give him; who is able to harm them only to the extent to which they have the willingness to bear with him; who could do them absolutely no injury unless they preferred to put up with him rather than contradict him. Surely a striking situation! Yet it is so common that one must grieve the more and wonder the less at the spectacle of a million men serving in wretchedness, their necks under the yoke, not constrained by a greater multitude than they . . .” [from THE POLITICS OF OBEDIENCE: THE DISCOURSE OF VOLUNTARY SERVITUDE by ÉTIENNE DE LA BOÉTIE   (1530-1563)

You know how a lot of people say that "we are due  for a recession"?

Well, Its been even longer since Governments have tried a power grab that resulted in war.

Lets see what we got in the bag:

1.Economical instability, check.

2.Cultural imbalances, check.

3.Countries hategin each other, check.

4.Media control to sell the story, check.

5.Changes in the law to allow totalitarism, check.

6.Internet policing so the truth does not get out, we are working on it.

It took 4 years for Hitler to rise up since the problems srtated showing up in Germany. But he didnt have muslim extremists blowing themselves up in Germany.

One interesting thing is how disconnected from reality those political leaders are. When this thing goes south they will better be in anotehr planet already, cus they will be blamed first.
