Watch Live: Trump's First Post-Comey Press Conference

Tyler Durden's picture

While we are sure the world is waiting with bated breath to hear about US-Romania relations, we suspect their joint-press conference will be slightly more focused on the fallout from yesterday's Comey testimony and Trump administration reaction...

As we detailed earlier, as "infrastructure week" draws to a close, President Donald Trump is preparing to meet with his Romanian counterpart, President Klaus Iohannis, in the Oval Office on Friday before the two hold a joint press conference in the Rose Garden to talk security, defense spending and other economic concerns.

The press conference is set to begin at 2:45 ET.

Romania, which joined NATO in 2004, increased its defense budget to equal 2% of its GDP this year – one of only 5 NATO members to hit that target. Trump, who has waffled back and forth on whether he considers the alliance “obsolete,” said last month during a meeting of NATO leaders at the defense alliance’s new headquarters in Brussels that its members owe the US a lot of money for paying for their defense.

The visit by Iohannis is meant to underscore the defense and military ties between the two countries. Romania is host to an $800 million ballistic missile shield built by the US that was “switched on” last month. US officials say the shield is meant to counter the threat from Iran.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Moscow views the missile shield in eastern Europe as a "great danger" and Moscow will be forced to respond by enhancing its own missile strike capability, according to Reuters.

The Romanian military recently agreed to buy Patriot missiles from US defense contractor Raytheon, a deal worth hundreds of millions, if not billions, of dollars.

The missiles would be part of an integrated air defense system comprising six newly acquired F-16 fighter jets as Romania brings its forces up to NATO standards and retires outdated communist-era MiGs, Reuters reported.

Iohannis has said that he hopes to make a good impression on Trump, and that their meeting is an important milestone in the relationship between the two countries.

“I truly wish for us to have a very good first contact with President Trump. I want to convince him that together we can make the partnership stronger, deeper,” Iohannis said, according to Romania Insider.

The Romanian President is currently on a visit to the US, a visit that started on June 4 and will end Friday after the meeting.

As Romania Insider reports, Iohannis is the first leader from Eastern Europe to meet with Trump. The two leaders already met once at the NATO summit in Brussels last month.

Iohannis will meet with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson following his meeting with Trump.

Educate thyself before spilling paranoia and make an ass of you. Romanians are speaking a latin based language surrounded by nations speaking slavic based languages. Romanians are descendents of the North Tracians known as Dacians and there is more than enough historical evidence to prove it. Romanians even if a small nation survived at the gates of Europe with Asia for millennia and Europe benefited from it all this time in a very unfair and selfish way. Without Romanians being continuously a sting gatekeeper for tatars and turks there would be no Europe as of today. Remember the legend of Dracula - prince Vlad The Impaler which was  the only European who really managed to inspire terror to turks and scare the shit out of them. Remember Stephen The Great who delivered what is considered even today the greatest strategic defeat to the biggest army ever assembled by the Ottoman empire at . Romanians managed to keep the front at the Don river against the Bolsheviks for Nazis with the hope to recover Moldavia part known as Basarabia in the most fiercely battle of Stalingrad

So stop insulting a nation to which Western civilization is due a lot with regards to it's existence and survival.

You're  right, but Romanians are now as indoctrinated as the West, even more, they hate Russia (for what the Bolshevicks did, they do not know that it was the Jooos that brought communism to them. In the first communist government  ,there were 189 joos(from a population of less then 2%),35 from different minorities(all representing 0.3% from population, and ONLY 8 Romanians, also they were the majority ,by far, very homogeneous population. When the Bolshevicks invaded, they brought with them many Jewesses they called Russians and those women married prominent Romanian leaders.(Ana Pauker was a very powerful Jewess who coordinated all this)

The Bolshevicks occupied all the positions of power, especially the repressive force. One of these was the father of the Prime Minister after the so called Romanian Revolution to get rid of Ceausescu,Petre Roman.(that  was a color See Eye Aye revolution)

The  Bolshevicks triggered an unbelivable terror. My grandparents were small farmers, they were decleared enemies of the state and deported and EVERYTHING they had was taken away. They were thrown in the street with only their cloths and the grandparents on my father's side deported(they had land, animals ,vineyards-they were working from 5AM til late night).

You,here do not know what these people are capable of.

The brainwashing and propaganda was massive.People did not believe them, but most of the Romanians do not know who the real enemy was and were blaming the Russains who were their victims too

Boths my grandparents died bc of heartbreake(I realize this now),waiting for the Americans to come and help(they did not know that the Americans ,the American jew banks financed the Bolshevicks and made a deal with Stakin later.

Luc X. Ifer's picture

I agree. I have the same background and history. My family of small bourgeois lost everything to Bolsheviks and my grandfather did Siberia for being a secretary in Antonescu's regime even if having jewish ancestry.

I do not get it... Khazars in Romania? Surely you meant Ukraine, Georgia, et al? Read Khrushchev memoirs for first-hand info...

peddling-fiction's picture

Hey, I get it. Don't give them an inch.

Google Khazars and look at the map and how it intrudes into BESSARABIA. Never said Romania.

Read about how Constantine V married a Khazar princess and how their son Leo IV, the Khazar, helps confirm the historic puzzle of Khazaria.

OK, sweet, but isn't Constantine still very dead, and this is now the XXI century with much better "puzzles" to solve?

It has been a member since 2004. It is still not in the visa waiver  program, meaning that unlike most of the EU, Romanians have to get a visa prior to visiting the US. The EU is threatening to make US citizens  get visas for Europe unless the US lifts the visa ban soon on Romania and several other Eu member states not in that visa waiver program

Trump is visiting Poland next month.. I'm sure they will discuss Thad

pizdowitz's picture

Not likely. The Königsberg is serving the same purpose that Frei Stadt Danzig was served to the Germans - to start WW II. The Russkies are excellent strategists and will not fall for such ruse.

Yeah, the Russians are not the unstable ones. Regrettably it is the North Star organization of war mongerers we need to worry about.

Poland should be a country that the USA GIVES weaponry to for free. Ditto for Israel.

Poland = a staunch backer of conservatism & Americanism. Brave fighters. Backing the Trumpian US like few others.

Just like Israel, surrounded by potential invaders who know the way from past invasions or attempts. :)

Endgame Napoleon's picture

Some of these Eastern European countries seem to have a posture on mass immigration more akin to the Trumpian / Brexit perspective. It is sad that sales of weaponry seem to be the main, finished-good export that the U.S. peddles, but our elite bossiness class prefers to invest in low-cost, offshored labor in other countries to turn a quick, cheap buck. So, what else can be done? The defense industry provides a few American citizens with decent-paying manufacturing jobs. Maybe, the tougher Eastern Europeans will watch the backs of the patsies in Western Europe who keep electing Globalist Uniparty candidates.

South Korea has nullified their plans for THAAD. Now the empire strikes back on the other side. Fuckers are relentless.

The USSA is basically the USSR again - spending way too much dough on dick waving and military, while the house crumbles from within. It's going to end well.

TheLastTrump's picture

Soooooo simplistic.

Let's ass u me that the US ceased to exist, thereby leaving power vacuums all over the world.

What do you think will happen....whirrled peas?

arby63's picture

You're right and wrong. We do spend too much. The primary difference is we can at least sort of afford it. Sort of....for now.

Behind the scenes, however, you can guarantee that Trump isn't gunning for any type of fight. He knows the financial costs are crazy---not to mention the moral and social costs.

I submit to everyone that Trump will be avoiding conflict whenever and wherever possible.

What foul dust's picture

'Missile shields' are euphemisms for offensive weaponry, aka Reagan's Peacekeepers. Russia is correct to view them as Kennedy looked at Cuban missiles.
