FBI Update: Virginia Shooter Purchased Rifle And Handgun From Federal Licensees

Tyler Durden's picture

Yesterday's Virginia shooting by the now deceased Illinois resident James Hodginkson rekindled the debate over, among other things, the proliferation of firearms, both legal and illegal, in the US. So to provide some additional detail about where Hodgkinson acquired his weapons - and what they were - moments ago the FBI issued a joint statement according to which the shooter's weapons recovered at the scene include a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62 caliber rifle, and more importantly, the "ATF has conducted traces on these weapons and has determined that both were purchased by the shooter from federal firearms licensees." It also adds that "we currently have no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful."

Additionally, the FBI said it has processed the shooter's vehicle, a white conversion van, which was parked in the parking lot of the YMCA directly adjacent to the park where the shooting took place. From that vehicle, the FBI has recovered and is processing a cell phone, a computer, and a camera.

In other words, not only was Hodgkinson a resident of Illinois, arguably the state with the most prohibitive gun laws, but his purchases were also legal. How the influences the ongoing debate over weapons in the US remains to be seen.

The full statement is below:

Joint Statement Update on Status of Shooting in Alexandria, Virginia

WASHINGTON, D.C. —The FBI and our federal, state and local law enforcement partner agencies in Alexandria, Virginia and Belleville, Illinois, continue to investigate yesterday's shooting at the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park located at 400 East Monroe Avenue in Alexandria, Virginia. The FBI continues to investigate the single shooter, James Hodgkinson, as well as his activities and social media impressions in the months leading up to yesterday's incident.

The shooter's weapons recovered at the scene include a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62 caliber rifle. ATF has conducted traces on these weapons and has determined that both were purchased by the shooter from federal firearms licensees. We currently have no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful. The FBI has processed the shooter's vehicle, a white conversion van, which was parked in the parking lot of the YMCA directly adjacent to the park where the shooting took place. From that vehicle, the FBI has recovered and is processing a cell phone, a computer, and a camera.

While the FBI and our federal, state and local partners continue to investigate and process the scene and evidence, we also continue to encourage the public to come forward with any information on the shooter. The FBI thanks the public for having submitted tips on the shooter. We continue to seek information on any encounters the public may have had with him in his home state of Illinois or in Alexandria, Virginia, where law enforcement believe he has been staying since March 2017. The FBI's Seeking Information poster on the shooter can be found at www.fbi.gov and the public can call 1-800-CALL-FBI to report tips, which can remain anonymous.

We ask for the community's patience as the FBI continues to actively work the scene and complete the shooting trajectory. Local road closures around the scene will remain in place until law enforcement have completed processing the scene, which may continue into part of the weekend, or potentially early next week. The Alexandria Police Department will announce when those road closures are lifted.

Aren't you glad Obama's not in office any more?  You know where this would go if he was.

J bones's picture

Yeah it would lead to very long lines at your local firearms dealer.

"Gun Control" ain't gonna happen, so FUCK OFF, gun-grabbers.

The only way you'll get Americans to give up their firearms, is through force, and make no mistake about it, we'll be shooting the whole time.

JRobby's picture

Better shut it all down.

In case the sheep decide to march.

Why wouldn't this douchebag's gun purchases be legal? A nothing burger....  a nothing burger that'll probably be made into a Sony's Big Boy quadrupal decker with extra everything,

But, if we're gonna violate the Constitution anyway, I'm good with an outcome that exclusively bans left wing socialist Bernie supporters from owning...

Pure Evil's picture

So the shooter lived in a van down by the river.

Did he also prey on small children and animals?

Sanity Bear's picture

The straw purchasers who moved the weapons in Fast and Furious also purchased those firearms lawfully from federal firearms licensees.

THIS DOES NOT PRECLUDE DEEP STATE ACTION

Easy fix: Seems like nearly all shootings are committed by leftards OR muzzies so if you really want to stop gun violence, ban all muzzies and anyone who whas voted blue team or accepted welfare in the last 20yrs from ever owning a firearm. Then arm up everyone else.

"Gun violence" becomes a thing of the past... IF that the actual goal of the anti gun nuts.

The only condition in which somebody should be able to take your gun is if its very hot (from lots of shooting), empty (cause you've run out of ammo), and you've been hit. And there ought to be a lot of dead motherfuckers scattered all around you as well.

So when that little weasal of a democrat governor in Virginia called for moar gun control he really meant...gun bans?

Why, I'm just as shocked as I can be  ;-)

These politicians love talking policy before any/all the facts are in as long as it suits their narrative.

Not sayin' this guy's right, but he raises some valid questions about the eyewitness video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zDej9As0hE

I live in Virginia, and McA-hole is dispicable.  I also live in the 8th Congressional district, and got an email from Democrap Congressman Don Beyer offering his opinion that gun control needs to be discussed again.  These assholes just don't get it.  We WANT our guns.  We will not ever give them up to flaming statists like them

Endgame Napoleon's picture

Americans did not even see gun control after the Sandy Hook mass murder of elementary school students by a 20 year old and the shoot-out by an elementary school student, using the gun of an adult relative, on an elementary school playground.

The U.S. has homeless adults sleeping all over the streets, proving how little the US values the lives of adults. It is dangerous to sleep on the streets in a country with so many mass murders. Given how much less the USA values the lives of adults, particularly adults who have not reproduced, why would anyone think that gun control would result from this latest mass shooting of adults?

That said, it is hard to see how government would control the criminal possession of guns, anyway, even if they did pass gun control that prevented the lawful guns used in the mass murders described above from being used for evil. There are so many guns already out there.

And government cannot even get it right when trying to regulate gun possession, as proved by the Dylan Roof case, where a government employee did not process his gun check correctly.

Government jobs, like many corporate jobs, are often dominated by absentee-backscratching cliques of bully moms. If you have reproduced, you can mess up a lot, fail to sell much if the job is sales-related and leave work frequently with no repercussions, whereas you have zero job protections as a childless person who comes to work every day, stays all day and meets the quotas every month. Hard work does not pay.

The underlying problem is that American parents, many of whom enjoy unprecedented amounts of welfare and taxfare money up to $6,269 for reproduction, in addition to mountains of excused absenteeism and other workplace privileges in family-friendly workplaces, are raising too many mass murderers.

Now, this is very sad. This congressman, among others, has been horribly injured by yet another mass-murdering shooter in an evil act. But there are tons of them, more mass murderers than at any time in U.S. history, even though the United States has more people locked up in prison than ever before in history. We have more prisoners than any other county in the world, and these mass murders are being committed by the free people.

During their copious, excused time off from work in the family-friendly jobs they dominate in bully cliques, parents need to start communicating basic moral values to their offspring, like thou shalt not kill. If you have those values, you are not going to murder anyone, whether or not you have a gun.

The hateful 24/7 media, hate mongers like Obama and Hillery, the violence out of Hollywood movies, and the killer himself are to blame; not the inate metal piece he had in his hand.

With all these folks who drive trucks into pedestrians who then leap out and knife them, we need to have a serious national conversation about truck and knife control. It makes as much sense as this discussion.

True Blue's picture

Except that truck ownership is not a right enshrined and guaranteed in the only document that allows the Government to exist in the first place.

It was suspended a long, long time ago. The USA, Inc. has no such document/rights.

I just tahnk God, he was incompetent with his rifle. A competent rifleman with his equipment would have easily picked off a lot of the people on the field with 50 some rounds. He was effectvely under 100 yards for most of his targets.

Ignatius's picture

Good point, which suggests this may be more theatre.

You know, as much as I hate to indulge conspiracy theories and trutherism, I am astonished that he managed to kill nobody. Was this just an elaborate variation of suicide-by-cop? Perhaps he wasn't even aiming for hits?

There were 2 people shooting back, from the start, then more shot back later. New ballgame.

Given the rounds fired, makes you wonder if it was even sighted in.

I agree, thank god so many of the bad guys are incompetent. Lives are saved with every miss.

NoDebt's picture

It's always funny when people (like 100% of those in the media) who know nothing about guns and have probably never even held one in their hands try to describe them.  Usually it's not knowing the difference between automatic and semi-automatic that gives them away.  Second place is the clip vs. magazine term.

pods's picture

I'm gonna buy an M1 just so I can get away with saying clip.

Judging by the lack of casualties, I'm not sure this guy was too familiar with firearms either...

MsCreant's picture

Witness has never been to the range...

I have not mastered it, but you can train yourself to not let the trigger go back all the way once you have fired a round, and have it ready to squeeze off the next one. That can go really fast if you can find and control that sweet spot.

Croesus's picture

@ Juggernaut:

In the context of the article, "7.62 caliber" (a broad term), is referring to any number of cartridges for any number of rifles (and handguns) falling in the .30- cal class.

.50 cal is bigger, but 20mm is still larger than that.

QE4MeASAP's picture

Homeboy was probably having difficulty rapid-firing the 7.62x51mm NATO round due to recoil and muzzle climb.

VZ58's picture

7.62 x 39mm   So obviously the Russians are behind it all!

One would think that the ATF and FBI, of all people, would get this right!
