US Jet Shoots Down Syrian Army Drone In "Dangerous Escalation"

Tyler Durden's picture

A US F-15E fighter jet shot down a Syrian regime drone on Monday near At Tanf, Syria, the third downing of a pro-regime aircraft this month, CNN reported. The downing of the drone comes a day after a US jet shot down a regime aircraft that was engaging a fleeing ISIS convoy, according to the Syrian government.

An armed Shaheed-129 UAV “displayed hostile intent and advanced on Coalition forces” at 12:30 am local time on Tuesday, the coalition said in a statement. The drone was observed in the same area where another UAV was shot down on June 8.

Here’s CNN:

"The drone was downed just outside the 55 kilometer de-confliction zone, according to the officials.

It was an Iranian-made Shahed 129 and was thought to be armed and in firing range of US troops.

One official said that the drone was shot down because it was 'assessed to be a threat.'

That drone was shot down after it dropped one of several weapons it was carrying near a position where coalition personnel are training and advising partner ground forces in the fight against ISIS."

According to Fox News, this is the second time the US has shot down an Iranian drone in less than a month. It also marks the fifth time since late May the U.S. military has bombed pro-Syrian forces in southern Syria.

Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy described the attack as “a dangerous escalation" of tensions between the US and the main backers of the Syrian regime, Russia and Iran.

Murphy told CNN that if the US doesn't stop the attacks, the situation could escalate into an armed conflict between the two sides, who both claim to be fighting ISIS.

“I think we’re getting closer and closer to open conflict between Iran and Russia and the American public need to know that we are moving very fast towards what could be another war in the Middle East – something Donald Trump promised he wouldn’t do when he ran for office.”

The US's actions could also prompt its coalition partners to withdraw from Syria, wary of being drawn deeper into an armed conflict with Iran and Russia. On Tuesday, Australia said it would temporarily suspend fights in the conflict zone as a "precautionary measure" after Russia said it would withdraw from an air-safety agreement in retaliation for Sunday's downing of the Syrian aircraft.

On the same day that the drone was shot down by US forces, an armed Russian fighter jet buzzed a U.S. Air Force reconnaissance aircraft in the Baltic Sea, two U.S. officials told Fox News.

In the latest in a long series of close encounters, Fox News reports the Russian Su-27 jet had missiles under its wings and approached the U.S. Air Force RC-135 recon jet "rapidly," coming within five feet of the American aircraft, the officials said.

Once alongside, the Russian jet was “provocative” in its flight maneuvers and flying “erratically,” according to another official.

Oh thank the lord, for a second I thought we attacked the people that are killing Christians.

Troll Magnet's picture

No. Just anyone that poses a threat to our Zionist overlords.

Killing Christians is fine. Will be condemned publicly. But it's fine, tacitly encouraged really, by our overlords.

How many battalions of Moderate "Rebels" were trained in Jordan CIA camps again? yeah, I didn't forget about that either.

So much for all the Trump fanboys who thought that he would DE-escalate all the international conflicts that the US is meddling in.

So far the only campaign promise that he's keeping, is his promise to spend EVEN MORE on the military industrial complex.

"MAGA" is the new "Sieg Heil," not thanks to the Jews, but thanks to all the stupid baseball cap wearing, tabacco chewing rednecks who voted for the Orange Jesus.

Stop blaming "the Joos" or "the Russians" for everything, and start looking in the mirror.

Its the short term thinking, get-rich-quick, Anglo-Irish culture that is to blame.

Truth is coming to the surface slowly but surely.

Trump should get out of Syria before things go south.

Time for the US to get a damn bloody nose over there. Fucking around in other nation's business, all for the damn MIC.

Even worse, no matter what is done over there, the media will portray it how the government wants it.

I say hang all those fuckers and start over.

Be cool folks, this is not a 'dangerous escalation' this is 'calculated, designed escalation'. All hail MAGA by the way of MiC!

Those Pesky Irish at it again trying to control the money supply and manipulate exchange rate to their advantage. Always meddling where they aren't wanted. Moving from country to country only to be thrown out after they turn it to shit.

More US bullshit. There is no deconfliction zone around al Tanf. It is a creation of the terrorist-supporting organization, the US military.

Here is a map of the 4 deconfliction zones. They are all in west Syria. al Tanf (not marked) is directly north of the 'OR' in JORDAN about 20km north of the Syria/Jordan border, about 100 km from the nearest deconfliction zone around Daraa.

Fuck the lying Zionists

It's the Amish or the Catholics.

The American public was given a choice between Trump the "outsider" or Hillary Clinton, the corrupt warmongering old hag.

I personally voted for Trump after never having voted Reppublican (always 3rd party) and am disappointed but not surprised by Trump and his military industrial Zionist fellatio two-step. I don't chew tobacco or have a MAGA hat.

At least anyone paying attention knows now  beyond a shadow of a doubt that it doesn't matter what the little people want and vote for. The plan is set to go forward. Debt, war, rapefugees rinse repeat

As a president, you have 2 options - to expand the military industrial complex or... elese.

Just ask JFK.

The US escalates by shooting first bombing Syrian troops more often, then missiles attacks on Syrian airfields, then shooting down drones, then shooting down jets, then advancing self declared no-conflict zones and shooting up whatever gets close. Along with ever increasing boots on the ground.

Syria escalates by sending troops down the road toward the no-conflict zones to get shot up, having a drone drop a dud when not even over "coalition forces", having a drone shot down, then a jet shot down, and now having anything that flies or moves close to "coalition forces" shot up.

Putin escalates by increasing capabilities with aircraft and then S400's, Then flies half the aircraft home after the US strafes Syrian troops for over an hour, complains in the UN about US actions, then flies more jets home when US attacks Syria with missiles, then agrees to zones where Syrian planes cannot fly over, complains to the UN when the US bombs more Syrian troops, makes a vicious strike against the US by calling the US actions and no-conflict zones illegitimate, cancels a cooperation agreement the US is already ignoring, and threatens to escort US planes as they bomb Syrians.

The escalation will be the rate of which the Syrians now get directly attacked, the rate at which coalition forces take ground while shielded in US created no-conflict zones and the rate in which Putin backs down.

Countrybunkererd's picture

At what point does a soverign decide to not back down anymore?  Backing someone into a corner and continuing to hit at them eventually creates unmitigated resolve to hit back.  The question is who and when.

Vimes's picture

Putin has to back down because he is not acting out of a position of power. He is there trying to defend his best interests (and maybe Russia's too).

Blankone's picture

I agree he is in a position of conventional weakness. I also agree completely he is acting in his (and the russian elite's) best interests, if you take a shorter term view.

But it will not stop until it IS stopped. Iran in the sights. Same for EUke I suspect. Russia will be regulated to within russia's borders and no "friends" left.

In the interests of the Russian people a stand would have been taken over Iraq and thus stopped Libya and Serbia (if I have the timeline correct). The backbone to start with tactical nukes and firm on readiness for more.

But this way is more profitable for the russian elite, until some tomorrow when the effects come. Or perhaps Putin is punking the world and he/they are in on the game. Remember, since the Soviet Union failed Russia has had a central bank installed that reports to London.

The Ram's picture

Where are the Russian S300 and S400's?  Are they saving these for a rainy day or just too pussy to use them and call the MICs bluff?  I don't think the MICwants a war with Russia.  I would shoot down an F-15 if I were Putin and see what happens.  I bet nothing.  We don't want anyone here in America to get spooked and forget the narrative that everything is wonderful!

williambanzai7's picture

So why the fuck are we shooting down a Syrian aircraft engaging a fleeing ISIS convoy?

ParkAveFlasher's picture

Speaking for the American public, I gotta ask, would MIC kindly simplify the good vs. evil narrative so that I understand who I should be booing?  Do they wear a specific colored uniform?

Troll Magnet's picture

To know whom to root for, find out whether they're friends of Israel first and last.
