The Federal Government Owns 61% Of Idaho, 64% Of Utah, And 84% Of Nevada

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by Michael Snyder via The Economic Collapse blog,

Did you know that the federal government owns 28 percent of all land in the United States?

Today, the feds control approximately 640 million acres of land, and after decades of very poor management, many are calling on the states to take a larger role.  This is particularly true in the 11 western states where the federal government collectively owns 47 percent of all land.  East of the Mississippi River, the feds only own 4 percent of all land, and there is no reason for such a disparity to exist.  In Connecticut and Iowa, the federal government only owns 0.3 percent of all land.  Such an arrangement seems to work very well for those states, and so why can’t we dramatically reduce federal land ownership in the western states as well?

Of course the federal government will always need a very small amount of land for certain national purposes, and nobody is disputing that.  According to the Heritage Foundation, the following are the primary purposes that federal land is being used for…

These holdings include national parks, national forests, recreation areas, wildlife refuges, vast tracts of range and wasteland managed by the Bureau of Land Management, reservations held in trust for Native American tribes, military bases, and ordinary federal buildings and installations.

We will always need to have some land set aside for those purposes.

But does the Bureau Of Land Management really need more than 247 million acres?

Does the Forest Service really need more than 192 million acres?

Does the Fish and Wildlife Service really need more than 89 million acres?

If the feds were doing a good job, that would be one thing, but in so many instances federal land managers have gotten an extremely bad reputation.  The following comes from an article by Sue Lani Madsen

For example, federal land is exempt from state noxious weed control laws, and lack of weed control has earned federal land a reputation as a bad neighbor. Frustrated local federal land managers are hindered by layers of internal regulations and restricted funding that make timely response to weed outbreaks difficult.

And thanks to mismanagement by the feds, wildfires tend to spread very rapidly in many areas owned and controlled by the federal government.  At this point more than 2.6 million acres of land have already burned in 2017, and that is close to 30 percent ahead of last year’s pace.

If you have never lived in a western state, it may be difficult for you to imagine just how frustrating it is to have the federal government in control of vast stretches of your state.  In so many cases the feds simply do not care about local issues or concerns, and when they drop the ball there is often very little that can be done about it.

According to Ballotpedia, the federal government owns more than 28 percent of the land in 12 different western states

  • Washington: 28.5 percent
  • Montana: 29.0 percent
  • New Mexico: 34.7 percent
  • Colorado: 35.9 percent
  • Arizona: 38.6 percent
  • California: 45.8 percent
  • Wyoming: 48.1 percent
  • Oregon: 52.9 percent
  • Alaska: 61.2 percent
  • Idaho: 61.6 percent
  • Utah: 64.9 percent
  • Nevada: 84.9 percent

Here in Idaho, we are glad to have so much public land because it is a wonderful thing for hunters, fishers, hikers and those that enjoy other outdoor activities.

So we want to continue our tradition of having wide open spaces that are owned by the public – we just want the federal government to hand over the keys and leave.

We believe that Idaho land should be owned by the people of Idaho, and we believe that Idaho’s natural resources should be managed by the people of Idaho.

Those that are against transferring ownership of federal land to the states often argue that it would be too expensive for the states to handle

Paying for wildfire protection alone—it accounts for about half of the U.S. Forest Service’s annual budget of $6.5 billion—would burden Western taxpayers, says the Center for Western Priorities, a conservation group.

States would be forced to raise taxes or sell off iconic national properties to developers or other private investors in order to pay for everything the federal government does now—from complicated tasks like enforcing environmental regulations and maintaining cultural and historic resources to simple ones like putting up road and trail signs.

But one study found that it is actually profitable for states to manage their own public lands.  Here is more from Sue Lani Madsen

A 2015 study by the Property and Environment Research Center, a free-market environmental think tank, consistently found state-managed land provided a return on every dollar spent while federal lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management cost more to operate than they return in revenue.

At the end of the day, this is just another area where we need to readjust the balance of power between the states and the federal government.  Our founders intended to create a system where the states had much more power than the central government, but instead that has become totally flipped around.

Today, it is almost as if the 10th Amendment does not even exist.  Most of the time the federal government treats state governments as little more than puppets, and very few state governments have the backbone to stand up for themselves.

As conservatives, we need to start standing up against the costly federal mandates that are imposing such a financial burden on our state governments.  We want control of our own laws and our own budgets.

It is also time for the feds to get off the backs of our farmers, our miners, our loggers and our ranchers.  Some of the most abusive federal agencies, such as the EPA, need to be shut down entirely. And if our local communities do not want to take Islamic refugees from the Middle East, they should not be forced to do so by the federal government.  Here in Idaho, three young Islamic refugees raped a 5-year-old girl, and yet the federal government does not seem to care about our outrage.

Recently, I have been talking to so many people that just want the federal government to leave us alone.  Instead of solving our problems, most of the time the federal government is the problem, and things would be so much better if the feds would just stay out of our business.

This is a poorly researched article from Snyder, which is not terribly unusual for him.  The article he links to about the "rape" of a 5 year old girl in Idaho demonstrates this adequately.  From the article (emphasis mine):

The incident touched off months of turmoil in Twin Falls after the story was spun into a fake news account that exaggerated or flat-out falsified many of the details, including that a knife was present, the attack was perpetrated by a Syrian gang of adult men, that a rape had occurred and that the attack was celebrated by the perpetrators’ families as city officials orchestrated a cover-up.

In fact, police and prosecutors said, there was no rape, no knife was present, and the incident involved young boys. Officials characterized the incident as a sexual assault and say each say each agency involved followed proper protocol.

OK, big deal, he didn't follow up to find out the initial details seem to have been politicized, most likely by "Alt-Right" types.  But let's cut to the chase.  He apparently doesn't understand the role of land management that resides in the Federal government.

From the US Constitution, Article IV, Section 3, Clause 2:

The Congress shall have Power to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States....

(In this case, I would argue that "United States" refers to the States united, and not the federal government.)

I agree that the public lands should be turned over to the States, or more properly, disposed to the people, as the Founders intended.  The former requires a Constitutional amendment; the latter a good kick in the ass to the Federal government administered by the people through some form of redress.

Here's a good model for such:

https://www.alec.org/model-policy/disposal-and-taxation-of-public-lands-...

I studied land law going back to feudal times and did lots of research on United States land patents.  I also researched the legal meaning of words utilized in the same, which was very fascinating, and revealing.  I surmise the "TO HAVE AND TO HOLD" clause (technically called the habendum and tenedum) of a patent signifies that the Crown still holds paramount title to all land in the United States.

TO HAVE AND TO HOLD.  The words in a conveyance which show the estate intended to be conveyed. Thus, in a conveyance of land in fee-simple, the grant is to “A. and his heirs, to have and to hold be said [land] unto and to the use of the said A., his heirs and assigns forever.” Williams, Real Prop. 108. Strictly speaking, however, the words “to have” denote the estate to be taken, while the words “to hold” signify that it is to be held of some superior lord, {. e., by way of tenure, (q. v.) The former clause is called the “habendum;” the latter, the “tenendum.” Co. Litt. 6o. - Black's Law Dictionary

Every land patent ever issued by the United States includes the clause "TO HAVE AND TO HOLD" (in uppercase) in the resolution.  I believe the above definition shines a light on a very under-discussed subject.

Holocaust means "destruction or slaughter on a mass scale, especially caused by fire or nuclear war".  The "holodomor" does not qualify as it was not destruction or slaughter, but starvation.  The Holohoax doesn't qualify because it was enslavement, also not destruction or slaugher.

Ironically, what does fit the description is the fine work of the Allies in WW II - not only the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but the fire bombings of Dresden, Tokyo, Hamburg, etc.  So as usual it is those screaming the loudest about others' alleged crimes who have committed the gravest crimes themvelves.

Tallest Skil's picture

Fuck off, retard. There was no genocide of the Indioes. Here's a fucking story for you, relayed to me by someone else.

I am a Native American. Our culture died because we allowed it to die. Culture can only survive if someone is willing to fight for it. If no one is willing to, it will die. You’re seeing it happen now in Europe, as well as in America, Canada, and Australia. It was never about the land. It was about the hearts of the people. The clay was secondary at best–irrelevant. You don’t need land to preserve the identity of a people. It does help, but it isn’t necessary. The majority of our people, if one could even use the term to describe the numerous disparate and warring tribes, were not interested in preserving their ways. Or, at least, not interested enough to make significant efforts to do so. Our ancestors could have used the knowledge of the Europeans to build towns and cities, chapels and schools. We could have sent children to study medicine and engineering, built our own printing presses and firearms, and raised our own libraries filled with books penned by our own hands.

They chose not to. What happened to us is terrible, regrettable, and tragic. But do not pretend we do not share at least equal portion of the blame. We did not march ourselves down this path, no, but we did not strive to survive it, either. We were given land. Was it enough, No, not even remotely. But we were given it, nonetheless. It was ours, to do with as we pleased. What did we do with it, in all the intervening centuries? Nothing. We have built trailer parks and casinos. Are we blame the white man for that, as well? How far down the rabbit hole will you reach, looking for excuses? To what lengths will you go to avoid accepting responsibility for your own choices and actions, including your lack thereof?

It is easy to pass the blame to others. Feel free to cite me what that has ever accomplished for anyone, ever, in the history of the world. Will you blame the long dead for your circumstances today, forever? Is that your goal? The dead are dead. They mean nothing. Stalin is dead. The Nazis are dead. The people who fought Nazis are dead. The American pioneers are dead. Joan of Arc is dead. Bismarck is dead. Winston Churchill is dead. Sitting Bull is dead. The men who founded the United Nations are dead. The soldiers who fought in World War I are dead. Our ancestors are dead. And so are all of the people who tormented them.

They are all gone. They have power only as memories and ideals. And while an idea is not to be underestimated, that does not change that they are all gone. What is real is what is here right now. You. Me. Everyone around you. That’s real. The world is made up entirely of those who were born into it with the inherited lots that were cast to them. Whether that lot is a weapon and a blessing, or a curse and a burden, is entirely up to you and what you choose to make of it. We can make of this world and our inheritance a palace or a prison, at our discretion. You can accept responsibility for that, accept the burden falls squarely on you to change your lot in life if you are dissatisfied, or you can cry as the walls come tumbling down. It is your choice. And the consequences of what you choose are yours, as well.

Why preserve cultures when we can simply make new ones?

Progressivism embraces multiculturalism as long as those "cultures" advance progressive agendas.

For a culture to survive requires a certain level of intolerance, otherwise what is there to hold onto? Ultimately multiculturalism is the aggregation of large numbers of intolerant "minorities" who can be organized to defeat, silence, denigrate, and dispose of the dominant culture....white hetero Christians.

Progressives claim to abhor intolerance EXCEPT the intolerance for the dominant culture.

There is much truth in your brief tome however I believe that the indigenous peoples were driven into submission by the government.  The spirit of the people was broken after many decades of genocide and other abuses.

Now before you trash me, think about how this is playing out today in our own society where the government continually takes away our rights and in a more subtle but still effective manner, beats us into submission.  The game is still on only we are the targets now along with any other peoples who have the misforturne of living on land that contains resources sought by the multi national corporations.

We are all targets now, ask Cliven Bundy.

Liberties are removed by force and coercion. Those that can be bought off with bribes and promises of special entitlements not easily derived from liberty go the cheapest, and those requiring force of violence are the most costly, but never doubt for a moment that liberty is surrendered, or we die.

Liberty has never been sold so cheaply as iti is today. We will surrender it for government entitlements paid for by our children, or simply the purchase of ANOTHER cheap import that undermines our employment and increases our dependence upon those accepting our surrender.

Then, Peru is quite far from North America. I invite you to look on a map to get some idea of how far.

Then, it seems that in several instances, the decline of North America native populations was directlty related to the contact with european people,

Also, a lot of native Americans tried to keep their culture despite the fact that european settlers did everything in their power to destroy it. Other native Americans, like the so callled civilzed tribes, adopted the european way of life in hope of saving themselves.
