One Ohio Politician Has A Simple Solution To The Overdose Problem: Let Addicts Die

Tyler Durden's picture

Across the country, opioids killed more than 33,000 people in 2015, more than any year on record, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As we have noted numerous times, the epidemic is ravaging populations across racial and socioeconomic lines, according to The Post's Joel Achenbach and Dan Keating. Spurred by overdoses, the death rate for Americans rose 8 percent between 2010 and 2015.

And Ohio and other Rust Belt states are at the center of the epidemic. Opioid-related deaths in Ohio jumped from 296 in 2003 to 2,590 in 2015 — a 775 percent jump, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

There's also an economic toll: One study estimated that the cost of the prescription drug opioid epidemic costs American society $78.5 billion.

And one Ohio city council member has a solution...

As The Washington Post reports, under a new plan, people who dial 911 seeking help for someone who's overdosing on opioids may start hearing something new from dispatchers: “No.”

In response to the opioid epidemic that swept the nation — including the small city of Middletown, population 50,000 — council member Dan Picard has floated an idea that has been called more of “a cry of frustration” than a legitimate solution.

At a council meeting last week, Picard proposed a three-strikes-style policy for people who repeatedly overdose: Too many overdoses and authorities wouldn't send an ambulance to resuscitate them.

Picard told The Washington Post that he sympathizes with anyone who has lost someone to drug abuse, but said that responding to an ever-increasing number of overdose calls threatens to bleed his city dry.

“It’s not a proposal to solve the drug problem,” Picard said this week. “My proposal is in regard to the financial survivability of our city. If we’re spending $2 million this year and $4 million next year and $6 million after that, we’re in trouble. We’re going to have to start laying off. We're going to have to raise taxes.”

The proposal also calls for the city to create a database of overdose victims who paramedics have responded to.

“We'll have that list and when we get a call, the dispatcher will ask who is the person who has overdosed,” Picard said.

“And if it's someone who has already been provided services twice, we'll advise them that we're not going to provide further services — and we will not send out an ambulance.”

Solutions, Picard told The Post, require out-of-the-box thinking.

Still, he said he has received dozens of angry emails, phone calls and Facebook messages as news of his proposal spread.

But he said his worst critics don't understand how bad the heroin problem has gotten in his community — with no sign of abating.

A rare animal: a politician who talks some sense.

For all you little snowflakes and bleeding hearts that believe the government is the answer to all your problems:

There was a Chemistry professor in a large college that had some exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab the Prof noticed one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt.

The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist government.

In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked, 'Do you know how to catch wild pigs?'
The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line.
The young man said this was no joke. "You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming. When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence.

They get used to that and start to eat, again you continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side. The pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat, you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.

Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating

the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.

The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening to America. The government keeps pushing us toward Communism/Socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine drugs, etc. while we continually lose our freedoms just a little at a time.

One should always remember 'There is no such thing as a free lunch!!' also 'You can never hire someone to provide a service for you cheaper then you can do it yourself.'
If you see that all of this wonderful government 'help' is the problem

confronting the future of democracy in America, you might want to send this on to your friends. If you think the free ride is essential to your way of life you will probably delete this email, but God help you when the gate slams.

Honey, that gate slammed on my parents fifty years ago.  I spent my first thirty learning to hop the fence.  Now I jump in and out as I please.

Cats have no Lord.

Those who vote for the promise of socialism end up with the fact of fascism ...

If people really want a kinder gentler world, then stop voting for socialism.

I guess the graph is to show that really poor people cannot afford drugs.

Dyingtime's picture

Legalized drugs, including every single one and then taxing them would have so many positive effects. Increased tax revenue, lower prison populations, less crime, less stress on police, and improved life quality for addicts and cancer patients. It would benefit just about every sector of life. Quess this makes too much sense, so our goverment wont do it.

Just make it a instant capital crime to get caught selling it to minors or near churches and we'd be good

Wonder how many billions it would save us each year? I'd say 20 or so.

Faeriedust's picture

Why draw the line at minors?  I mean, really, our attitude toward young people in this country is bizarre.  How do you expect them to grow  up if they're never allowed to have any experiences because they might hurt their widdle toes?  And you wonder why all the young people are "snowflakes" who throw temper tantrums when confronted with ideas they don't like?

Let minors make their own decisions if their parents can't stop them.  And let churches deal with it however they want; why should they have special privileges?  By the very word you discriminate in favor of Christians over Hindus, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists and Pagans.  Why should a fast-sinking minority get special perks?

If an addict can buy dope courtesy of the CIA and DEA, then they should be able to buy Narcan w/o a prescription. But no, in most places only paramedics and cops can have it. Some places do give it out, but I think addicts should buy it.

Then maybe all the fuckin' cheapskates here won't cry about their tax dollars. I wonder how many of the cheap fuckers on here eat like shit, drink alcohol, and use tobacco. They're costing us money, too. Just not as obvious. You'll give sympathy to a diabetic/heart disease victim, a cancer victim, or even a victim of liver failure or esophageal varisces. Oh, but not to the heroin addict, because .gov says it's illegal... fuckin' hypocrites.

Don't like my post, fuck you. And I ain't no snowflake, believe you me.

Fight Club, right?

I think there's a spider on top of your head.

Your health is your responsibility, not my responsibility.

knotjammin2's picture

No!! Fuck you!! Since when is anyone a cheapskate because they don't want their hard earned taxdollars being pissed away on some lowlife illegal drug addict.  You want your money to be used on a gene pool that should be drained there is nothing stopping you from donating.  It makes no damn difference who is supplying the drugs either.  Go fuck yourself you little snowflake and between your fucking rants go get a fucking job.  It's always the liberals that want to spend someone elses mony!!

Faeriedust's picture

If anyone could buy whatever they damned well pleased on the open market without having to get a permission slip from Dr. Overcharge, then addicts could buy both their jollies AND their Narcan on their own dime, and those of us with high blood pressure could pay $5/month for our drugs instead of $5 for the drugs and $400/yr for the damned doctor to tell us what we already know.  Deal?

I don't have much sympathy for anyone with chronic illness.  Americans are the most medically sophisticated people in the world; if they are ill it is mostly because of bad decisions, partly because working people (if they're lucky enough to have work) get paid shit wages for the toughest jobs, and finally because guess what? We ALL die in the end.  Human bodies aren't built to last forever.  Get over it.

They could save a lot more money by refusing to treat fat people suffering from heart attacks.  They could even throw in women going into labor.  Pregnancy is certainly a behaviorally based, preventable disease.

Not to be moralistic.  Just trying to save some money here.

Or close them down???

How about bringing back the 100 million or so jobs from overseas so Americans can go back to work instead of killing themselves at home because they have no hope or prospects?

Was there a drug epidemic when  America had full employment???

The elites are the cause of all this societal cancer and soon I hope they will all die!

rejected's picture

They come from Big Pharma. They have Congress paid off so good luck on getting them to pay anything.

Same with the exported Jobs.

America never had 'full' employment.... and still doesn't.

Pumpkin's picture

War on drugs is BS.  Makes the price of drugs extremely high, creating a whold supply chain willing to kill for the profits and at the same time make addicts steal for the habbit.  Puts thousands in jail at the people's expense.  And still doesn't do anything to address the original problem.  Just adds 4-5 more.

captain-nemo's picture

The first thing that needs to be done is to destroy the opium plantations in Afghanistan. The Americans have been there for decades, yet they have allowed the muslems to continue this horrible tradition, well knowing that it ultimately will end up killing thousands of people around the world and destroying huge amount of families every day

Most people when they think about muslem countries, would think about international terror and terrorism as the most evil these countries do, but production and sales of narcotics around the world, illegal sales of weapon and smuggling , as well as kidnapping , hijacking and extortion are perhaps even more evil.

For  95% of all muslem countries in the world, this is basically what they do for a living, and because they have higher regards for dying and the death itself , rather than living and life,  these kind of businesses suits them perfectly.

Focusing on overdosing and allowing addicts to die is just a way to ignore the real problem and find excuses not to deal with those (the muslems) who causes all these problems.

panhead20's picture

Exactly, let all the children that have someting blocking their airway die because they were foolish to put something in their mouth.

Let everyone die with lung cancer due to smoking, liver cirrhosis due to drinking, heart attack due to over weight,

Here's one that might hit home with most, gonorrhea/syphilis due to prostitutes.

If you are going to make addicts responsible, EVERYONE has to be responsible.

Failed logic is a sign of a libtard... it's a mental disease of incorrect thinking...

ALL that you have said is a lot different than putting a needle full of poison in your arm for pleasure.

BTW, those STD's are easily curable, I keep my own stock of antibiotics in the refrigerator just in case.

Fuckin' retard!

Letting the weak minded clear themselves of the gene pool would make too much sense...

BUT there are too many retards in high places.

Fuck the addicts, spend the money on people who deserve it!

knotjammin2's picture

Return the money back to those that "earned" it!  Nobody deserves the fruits of somebody elses labor.  Noboby should get a free ride.  That's what has fucked up this country.  Too many hands out waiting for money they did not earn.

BULLSEYE - UPVOTE 10000000 !!!!!!!!!!

It is not a bad idea.  If many efforts to get the addicts off their drugs do not work, society really doesn't owe these people anything else.  They are more-or-less dead already.  It's like pulling the plug on a patient in a vegetative state.
