"I Won't Let Myself Be F***ed": French Armed Forces Chief Resigns After Clashing With Macron

Tyler Durden's picture

France's armed forces chief resigned on Wednesday, culminating a dramatic dispute with president Emmanuel Macron over defense budget cuts, in what Reuters called "an early test of the newly elected president's mettle and the tough presidential style he is cultivating." Last week, General Pierre de Villiers publicly lashed out about Macron’s proposed €850 million cuts to the military's budget, when in an outburst before a parliament committee he said he "won't let myself be fucked like that," adding that "I may be stupid, but I know when I am being had."

In a statement released on Wednesday, the 60-year-old De Villers said that "in the current circumstances I see myself as no longer able to guarantee the robust defense force I believe is necessary to guarantee the protection of France and the French people, today and tomorrow, and to sustain the aims of our country," noting he had tried to keep the armed forces fit for an ever more difficult task within the financial constraints imposed on it, but was no longer able to sustain that. He added that Macron had accepted his resignation.

de Villiers attend the Bastille Day military parade on July 14, 2017

The open conflict between the head of state and the chief of armed forces started earlier in July when France’s Budget Minister Gerald Darmanin announced military budget cuts.  According to the proposed budget the Defense Ministry would have to make savings of just under $980 billion. The Interior and Foreign Ministries also had to face budget cuts. Darmanin told Le Parisien that the authorities “have found €4.5 billion in savings... solely in the national government” and promised that neither social security nor local authorities “will come into it.”

In a surprisingly abrupt public response to De Villers' initial outburst, Macron said "I have made commitments, I am your boss," he said in a speech to dozens of top army officers and their families.

“If the [Armed Forces] chief of staff has an issue with the President of the Republic, the chief of staff will be changed,” Macron added in an interview to Journal du Dimanche newspaper.

“Armies basically obey. So in substance the president was within his rights to restate his authority… But the way he did it will leave marks. You cannot publicly question a military leader like that in front of his subordinates,” former chief of the French armed forces Henri Bentégeat told Le Monde newspaper.  “When Macron attends the first ceremony for a soldier killed because of a lack of equipment, all the criticism will be directed at him."

Meanwhile, in a hint that further rebellion awaits France's youngest president, foreign affairs minister Jean-Yves Le Drian praised De Villiers on Wednesday, saying “He is a great soldier, one of great integrity and intelligence.”

On Wednesday, Macron moved quickly to replace de Villiers, appointing General Francois Lecointre, 55, to fill the role, a military source said. Macron also told ministers at a weekly cabinet meeting that he was still aiming to raise the defense budget to 2% of gross domestic product by 2025 despite cutbacks in 2017.

The departure of France's most senior soldier also highlighted the stresses of a major military power as it battles Islamist insurgencies in Africa, partners with allies in Middle East conflicts, and patrols the streets at home in response to a series of jihadist attacks on French soil.

General Pierre de Villiers sure has a lot of medals.

I guess that every time France surrenders, everybody gets a Participation Medal and a box of Klenex.  ;-)

If he retires to some beautiful chateau in the middle of no-where, take this as a warning.

Troy Ounce got it right - the General fell into a trap.  Dismantling the Army was the whole idea.

Then again, has France got anything left to defend?  I thought they had been invaded already.  At this point there's probably no point in even buying a white flag.

So de Villiers thinks he works for France and the French people? How cute. How naive. The French military used to do that under de Gaulle, but now it is part of the North American Terrorist Organization and works for the banksters.

... while the Frog's Defence Chief won't let the Cougar-lover fuck him, guess who's been making billions of dollars’ worth of arms sales against Syria ... >>> http://www.voltairenet.org/article197144.html ...

... a portion of the article says ...

... " ... According to Dilyana Gaytandzhieva, in 2015, Minister for Transport Ziya Mammadov placed the state company Silk Way Airlines at the disposition of the CIA , at the expense of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The Minister for Foreign Affairs, minimally scrupulous Elmar Mammadyarov, sent requests for official recognition of « diplomatic flights » to several of his embassies, which protected the flights from being searchcd under the Vienna Convention. In less than three years, more than 350 flights benefited from this extraordinary privilege.

Although, according to the international treaties, neither civil nor diplomatic flights are authorised to carry military material, requests for recognition as « diplomatic flights » require the explicit detailing of the cargo transported. However, at the request of the US State Department, at least Afghanistan, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Bulgaria, Congo, the United Arab Emirates, Hungary, Israël, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Turkey and United Kingdom closed their eyes to this violation of international law, just as they had ignored the CIA flights to and from their secret prisons.

In less than three years, Silk Way Airlines transported at least one billion dollars’ worth of armament.

One thing leading to another, journalist Dilyana Gaytandzhieva uncovered a vast system which also supplied the jihadists not only in Iraq and Syria, but also in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Congo - also paid for by the Saudis and the Emiratis. Some of the arms delivered in Arabia were redirected to South Africa.

The arms transported to Afghanistan were delivered to the Talibans, under the control of the US, which is pretending to fight them. Those delivered to Pakistan were probably destined to commit Islamist attacks in India. We do not know who were the final recipients of the arms delivered to the Republican Guard of President Sassou N’Guesso in the Congo, or those delivered to South Africa under President Jacob Zuma.

The main arms dealers were the US firms Chemring (already mentioned), Culmen International, Orbital ATK (also mentioned) and Purple Shovel.

Apart from the Soviet-type arms produced by Bulgaria, Azerbaïdjan, under the responsibility of Minister of the Defence Industry Yavar Jamalov, bought stocks in Serbia, the Czech Repûblic and also in other states, declaring each time that Azerbaïdjan was the final recipient of the merchandise. Concerning the electronic intelligence material, Israël placed at their disposition the firm Elbit Systems, which pretended to be the final recipient, since Azerbaïdjan does not have the right to buy this type of equipment. These exceptions attest to the fact that the Azerbaïdjani system, although requested by the United States and Saudi Arabia, was controlled from start to finish from Tel-Aviv. ... "

Exactly, what in the hell has France got to defend?? I really do see them as a global power. I wonder if their armed forces have a 35 hour work week as well?? God, I would love to see what their "defense budget" looks like...on the other hand, this could be what Marcron is trying to do: shrink the "national defense" in preperation for the "EU Armed forces"...yeah, I'm sure that will work out just fine like the Euro/EU did (sarc/off).

Germany Is Quietly Building a European Army Under Its Command

Who needs a parliament?

I have no sympathy with the Europeans: no parliament, no army, no guns for self protection against big government. Nothing. Sheeple. Let them suffer.

If the General wanted to make a case for his budget, he should actually try defending France starting with the borders.

The Dutch Guy's picture

That's what's happening right now and also in the Netherlands.
First lower the defence budgets, than create a problem where we need our army for our protection (our beloved allah friends for example) and as a solution we will get an EU army. Oh, we live in such a beatifull word...

Vimes's picture

And what is wrong with a European army? The United States has one, the Russian Federation, China too. What are you gonna do again such a large military force as a single European country? Some haven't forgotten the total fuck up that was the Balkan war.

i don't see the point of european army, except for a thing that will never come, exit NATO...

because ? because already all european armies are made with at least 50% niggers... in france it is just funny to see general chief army saying on  its own resign to the young recrues " don't  follow blindly "

what a fucking irony.

did you know a french military goin on opex have to buy it's own chest rig, own rangers/shoes, own tactical battledress and al ? this country do not have a fucking cent anymore, for collecting tax for the deputees & gov', here is the money flow.. but to equip their troops... nope.

europe will go down in flame within 10years I SWEAR,  540 millions peole cannot go on that trajectory without disruptive event leading to social collapse when  we import millions migrants per years.

for exemple : 2006 2015 italy got 300% more poverty people.

in greece 30% of population didn't work a single hour for 4 years.

i mean... are europeans still got brains or...? i do, but i won't put myself in danger for the sake of a failed continental ideology

it is insanity.

historian40's picture

Oh, he may understand that very well.  Not everyone wants to become like the former sovereign States of the US.  Scarecrow shadows of their former selves, subjugated under the boot heel of a tyrannical central government's standing army.

Bunga Bunga's picture

That's the whole point. While defunding national armies, they fund the new EU army. Macron is just a globalist puppet. French people will wake up one day and realize that they elected the man who stole their sovereignty.

Mr 9x19's picture

theory of defunding to refunding when ECB took  FED in 2014 role to print money to keep  the world  alive, i don't see the point, just print the fucking money and make it already.

you have it backwards - national armies may be among the few institutions to survive the coming collapse/crisis.

BTW, there is no EU army, and there never will be one.

LOL, good one. they are, of course, French medals

remember France? helped with the US Revolution, the oldest ally of the US, as President Macron recently mentioned to President Trump on Bastille's Day military parade?

the same country that features so many US jokes, from Homer Simpson's "cheese-eating surrendering monkeys" to the US Congress Cafeteria's "Freedom Fries". for the gall to say "Saddam has no WMDs"? well, that France

which, btw, recently elected a President that is now in the process of reducing it's military expenditures, leading to this general to quit

warmongers... hate that. weapon dealers... hate that moar

Haus-Targaryen's picture

Good post.

Too damn bad France is/has imported so many third-worlders into their country.  How much longer do you think Herr Schäuble, that this self-loathing in Europe continues?

Do you think its just a cultural by-product or do you think its part of a larger puzzle?

Ghordius's picture

most of them were not "imported", they are a result of Algeria (and other countries) becoming independent from France (see: Algerian War of 1954-1962)

Haus-Targaryen's picture

So then they are French, as in their grandparents were in France and their great-grandparents as well?

I appreciate the 90k Algerians that helped the French and subsequently fled thereafter, but simply because your grandparents acted heroically/traitorously does not make their kids and then grandkids "above the law."

Follow the rules or GTFO -- especially if said descendants don't identify as "French" but as something else.

I do feel bad for dark-skinned people who have assimilated and are productive members of various European societies.

Ghordius's picture

I don't see this leading to anywhere. you mean 900k (originally, the "first batch"), don't you?

look, you aren't French, according to your own words. don't misunderstand me, I would prefer to have conversations with you on things you have some solid knowledge, and France, frankly, does not look like it is one of those

indeed, I find that "American" scorn of all things French... tiring. I'm always surprised at the persistence of it, and I always find the root causes in your very own American Culture War, bordering to this meme of a Civil Cold War

stop those projections, would be my call. I think I repeated it some hundred times, so far

Haus-Targaryen's picture

No, the first 900k were white French people, the next 90k were Algerians who helped the French. I am speaking about the second group, not the first.

My scorn isn't for the French here, per se, but rather for their decision to import millions of third-worlders.  Its the same scorn I have for Germany and Germans right now.  Its based on a very naive view of "multiculturalism".  Don't misunderstand me, I wish it wasn't this way and we could all live in a peaceful rainbow-land like South Africa currently is, but it will work in Europe as well as it has worked there.

Explain this to me Ghordo, why is it the same people who condemn colonization in the strongest of terms are also normally the same people who support bringing in millions of these people into our own countries?  Seems a bit inconsistent don't you think?

Ghordius's picture

ok, perhaps this is leading somewhere

yes, there are many things that are inconsistent. but, frankly, I think "the proof in the pudding" might come. Libya, for example, is still in the grip of a civil war, with warlords being courted by Egypt as much as Russia, among many others

at a certain point perhaps not so far in the future, you might see me, here on ZH, supporting a French, perhaps Franco-Italian or even Franco-Italian-German invasion of Libya, just to have order back in "our frontyard"

and this might lead to great howls of condemnations from parts like the KSA as well as Russia as well as, of course, part of the US public

and it might be "fun" to see who is for and who is against that. anti-colonialists, of course, will be squarely against it

Haus-Targaryen's picture

I wouldn't want the Bundeswehr anywhere near that mess.

No, for some odd reason ... and for the life of me I cannot understand it ... "Europeans" look at the race issues in the U.S. and chalk it up to "racisss white people" whille giving the blacks and the Hispanics a pass.  Its a very naive viewpoint and to think it'll work here, when it is in the process of so horribly failing not just in every European country its being tried in, but in the U.S. and Canada as well and then here in Europe/Rainbowland, various EU nations are doubling-down on it, even sanctioning nations who see it for what it is and want no part of it.

No, Ghordo ... the French have my scorn like the Germans, English, Dutch, Belgians, Italians, Austrians, Danes, Finns, Norwegians and especially the Swedes have my scorn.  Not because of stuff that happened before any of us were alive, but because of their wanton and willful naivete/ignorance.

The sheer departure from reality that many in the West are attempting to undertake is breathtaking to watch.

I'll ask again what I asked earlier:

Do you think this "Multikulti ist Geil" attitude which has developed into a Spanish Inquisition of sorts in Western Europe (burn anyone at the stake that doesn't agree) is an organic manifestation of "Western" culture, or is it a piece in a larger puzzle? What do YOU *honestly* think?

Ghordius's picture

"Mutti" has reversed, did "U-turns" and so on. the "Mutti" facing elections in September... is not the same political animal as in 2015, because her supporting coalition has changed it's mind on many issues

meanwhile, you are here, among us, which you scorn. fine. but your children... will belong to us, most probably

culturally, they will be Germans, and Europeans. I hope you realize that, in all your scorn and talk about culture

just make sure that in twenty years you have the arguments that might convince them of what you want to convince them

Bay of Pigs's picture

Why don't you just answer his fucking question?
