Former CIA Director Calls For A Coup If Trump Fires Mueller

Tyler Durden's picture

In the most vocal opposition to president Donald Trump yet, former CIA Director John Brennan said that if the White House tries to fire special counsel Robert Mueller, government officials should refuse to follow the president orders, as they would be - in his view - “inconsistent” with the duties of the executive branch.

"I think it's the obligation of some executive branch officials to refuse to carry that out. I would just hope that this is not going to be a partisan issue. That Republicans, Democrats are going to see that the future of this government is at stake and something needs to be done for the good of the future," Brennan told CNN's Wolf Blitzer at the Aspen Security Forum, effectively calling for a coup against the president should Trump give the order to fire Mueller.

The exchange is 43 minutes into the clip below:

(Full transcript here)

Brennan appeared alongside his former colleague, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and both men who served in the Obama administration, told Blitzer they have total confidence in Mueller. "Absolutely. It was an inspired choice- they don't come any better, " Brennan said adding that "If Mueller is fired, I hope our elected reps will stand up and say enough is enough." Some have responded with questions where Brennan's devotion to the Constitution was in the aftermath of the events in Benghazi.

Falling back on his neocon roots, James Clapper, who has waged a long-running vendetta with Trump, once again warned about Russian interference in US affairs. When asked about the June 2016 meeting between Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort with a Russian lawyer and others, he responded: "I'm an old school, Cold War warrior and all that - so I have, there's truth in advertising, great suspicions about the Russians and what they do. A lot of this to me had kind of the standard textbook tradecraft long deployed by Russians. It would have been a really good idea maybe to have vetted whoever they were meeting with."

Clapper was also asked about Trump's comparison of the intelligence community to Nazi Germany. Clapper said he called the President-elect nine days before he left the Obama administration saying he "couldn't let that reference pass" and it was an insult to him, CIA Director John Brennan and the workforce. "That was a terrible, insulting affront, not just to me or John, we get paid the big bucks, but I'm talking about the rank and file, men and women, patriots and intelligence community -- that was completely inappropriate and over the top - I had to do something about it."

And so he did: on the call Clapper said Trump asked him to "to put out a statement rebutting the contents of the dossier which I couldn't and wouldn't do. It was kind of transactional" referring to a dossier that alleged ties between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russia. It was not clear if he wouldn't and couldn't do it because the contents were legitimate, in his view, or because the dossier is what started the whole "Russian collusion" narrative in the first place. Curiously, Clapper saw it as a favor to Trump not to issue a statement: Clapper was asked by Blitzer why he didn't put out a statement replying: "The whole point of the dossier by the way was we felt an obligation to warn him to alert him to the fact it was out there. That was the whole point."

It was not clear if James Comey, whose subsequent leak to the NYT led to the appointment of Mueller, would have applied the same reasoning when asked by Trump to rebut the dossier's contents.

What do you mean? (((Brennan))) doesn't look Jewish at all. He's as Irish as his last name.

The Difference between Trump and Nixon, is that Nixon committed Crimes.

Trump has done nothing wrong Whatsoever.  The entire Russia thing is Total BS; and everyone knows it.

If the Republicans in Congress were to go along with this, the Trump base of the party would COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY ANNIHILATE THEM.

I mean Scorched Earth; there would be nothing left of these RINO Scumbags.  Just charded remains of their political careers.

Brennan is a communist, a whabbi Muslim convert, and a goddamn traitor.

Yeah he is a communist but look at how he positions himself...

This from, Clapper, an uncharged therefore unconvicted perjurer. And how did he perjure himself? He lied about the very same thing the Nazi state did, spying on its own people.

treefeller's picture

At least Trump never called those sick fucks commies. He stopped short and called them Nazi's. You'da thought Clapper and Brennan would have been thankful for the compliment.

At the end of the day, I don't get it. The commies killed the shit out of Christians and others at an alarming rate and don't even get credit for all of that and more. Christalmighty already. If these pussies are gonna do something, do it already.

If that journalist had any balls he would have gotten up and bunched the asshole Brennan in the nose and called him a terrorist.

"...and it was an insult to him, CIA Director John Brennan and the workforce. ..."

Imagine for a ever-so-brief-moment if these insulted "patriots" (cough-cough..reflux) were ever to read the comments section of sites such as this one. Would feeling "insulted" truly capture their disposition?

nmewn's picture

lol...his statement of insult rings a little hollow to me, it's a lot like when a senator rises from his seat and says "My dear friends on the other side of the aisle..."..."and that is deeply disturbing."

They are not really deeply disturbed at all and those people on those other side of the aisle are not his friends. They just like to cloak themselves in this genteel nonsense that goes back generations. Men like Schumer, Reid, Brennan & Clapper use sentence structure like that  stick you between the ribs with a rusty knife and while smiling and asking "How does that feel, my friend."

Thats what it really is.

So as far as I'm concerned they can take their fake insult & mock outrage and stick it up their ass, if they are even capable of being insulted after looking within themselves for what they have done and are doing let them come here to ZH and they can be shown what an insult looks like.

They are traitors in every sense of the word, to us as a people, to the Constitution they swore to protect & defend and to the President. Not only have they betrayed their honor, our trust and their duty they are now trying to cover up why they did it with fake outrage, another plea to emotion.

Fuck them.

They are like the burglar who has been caught half inside my bedroom window now pleading for his life. Mercy is a thing that can be extended to them...or not...with no negative consequence or ill feelings toward me because it is they who are clearly in the wrong.

I choose not to extend it to them, simple as that.

Clapper was also asked about Trump's comparison of the intelligence community to Nazi Germany.

Clapper did not say this: "Trump is wrong, DHS was created by Markus Wolfe, a former East German Stasi Leader."

My response: This statement is out right TREASON and in violation of the Sedition Act of 1918. My advice to this guy is to STAND DOWN, SHUT UP, LISTEN and LEARN. In fact, he should really think about leaving America permanently and go live in one of the many Muslim nations in the ARAB world since he is a MUSLIM.

What ever he decides, he really needs to do it soon and get the HELL out of America.

Giving these people (Hillary, Obama, Brennan, Clapper, Lynch, Wasserman-Schultz, Comey) any airtime in the public square is a crime.

Do these assholes have secret service protection?

Or just their own private mercenary armies.

Yes, but there are many women who'll want to get in on the action.  If they're all having PMS at the same time it will only take a handfull of them to get the job done.  Throw in a couple of women dealing with menopause and Brennan and Clapper will regret making their remarks.

BHO and hrc are protected by Secret Service in accordance with the Former Presidents' Act. hrc thru Fat Bill, and BHO through his own self. W tried hard to trim it down to ten years, but BHO, in the end of his first term, reverted it back to lifetime coverage.

Couldn't say with with any certainty about ther rest... Clapper probably has two sets of staff... One that is serving after seeing clandestinely taken pictures of family members, and the ones that took those pictures... as if to say "We know where they are and what they do and when they do it. Shame if something happened to them..."

Once the real investigation starts on the previous party lots of people will go down as accomplices. Practically the entire DNC. Some still in this administration. Sessions will have to resign if he is compromised. We will see soon, because Trump's words are speaking war. I expect vigorous squirming by the vermin.

Only a day or two ago, ZH published David Stockman's rant about locking up Brennan, Samantha Powers, and another actor.

Sounds like even a mere rumor if firing Mueller brought out Brennan. He's none too smart. You don't let your "enemy" know what your thinking, or what the next chess move might be.

All they are left with is the imprimatur of "law", not fair, neutral, balanced or impartial justice, not anything equivalent or even resembling that. People, it was always going to be this way at the end of the day, all they have left is..."BECAUSE WE SAY SO THAT'S WHY!!!"

That's not enough.

Yes, Brennan in particular is a despicable traitor and must be hanged for treason, sedition, subversion, civil fraud, war crimes, murder, criminal conspiracy, and only God knows how many other crimes committed while a high officer of the United States.

After a fair trial, of course.

5D Chess theory (because there always is one) Mueller's team is made up of people with an expertise in going after international organized crime with links to terrorism. Trump interviewed Mueller the day before he was appointed. Also the trashing of Sessions may be grandstanding.  Interesting that Trump chose to talk shit about him to the Fake News NY Times.

Details on Mueller's team that fuel speculation here:

Very interesting read.

Been wondering why that sleazeball Clinton whore Jamie Gorelick was Jared Kushner's lawyer, and has been distancing herself recently.

Maybe Trump and Co. really are out maneuvering these scumbags.

One can only hope.

nmewn's picture

There is some speculation that Trump gave Sessions the Code Red treatment in the NYT's because he recused himself of "all things Russia".

I've always said he (Sessions) shouldn't have allowed the "compromise" to attain his position (he did nothing wrong, they were events attended with other people & staff) now that is what Trump see's too, a rudderless AG on the very issue his political enemies have chosen to dog him with.

This is for all the marbles, release Sessions of "his obligation" on honor & character and get another AG like Gowdy who can go after Hillary destroying 33,000 under subpoena three weeks after being served (that has nothing to do with "Russian hacking of the DNC", free to go after Susan Rice & Samantha Powers for the felonious unmasking Flynn (also, nothing to do with "Russian hacking of the DNC"), as well as, a friend of the court brief in alliance with the Burnie Marx supporters going after Debbie Wassername-Schultz & the DNC for..."interference with our democracy" in the primaries ;-)

ONEwarrior's picture

Would Gowdy do it?

I think Sessions has cowed because all this is beyond his desire to deal with those All-Stars that were going to be (and now are) on Mueller's Dream Team.
