EU Imposes More Sanctions Against Russia, Blacklists Deputy Minister

Tyler Durden's picture

The European Commission has decided to broaden sanctions against Moscow on Friday. As RT notes, more Russian individuals and firms accused of delivering Siemens gas turbines to the Crimea have been blacklisted.

The updated blacklist includes Russian Deputy Energy Minister Andrey Cherezov, the head of the department of operational control and management in Russia's electric power industry Evgeniy Grabchak and state firm Technopromexport CEO Sergey Topor-Gilka.

*  *  *

As we detailed earlier, this was expected.

The European Union is expected Friday to expand sanctions against Russian individuals and companies that were allegedly involved in the transportation of at least four Siemens turbines to Russian-controlled Crimea in violation of an international ban, according to Reuters.

EU states have until later on Friday to submit any complaints to the proposal to extend the Russia blacklist. Two diplomatic sources said it looked like there will be no obstacles and the decision will be taken.

Germany proposed last month to put four more Russian nationals - including from the energy ministry - on the blacklist, as well as three Russian firms, including the one that delivered the turbines to the peninsula.

EU states need unanimity to introduce sanctions and one source said, however, one of the names has been removed from the original proposal after Italian objections.”

The expansion puts the EU – and Germany in particular – in an awkward position: Representatives of the trade bloc have recently expressed outrage at the US over a sanctions bill signed by President Donald Trump that they say could unfairly infringe on the EU-Russia bilateral trade relationship.

European Commission Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker earlier this week criticized the US for not consulting the EU before moving ahead with the sanctions bill, threatening reprisals should they damage bilateral trading relations. Trump reluctantly signed the sanctions into law earlier this week after expressing his displeasure with the bill in a signing statement that criticized Congress for further escalating tensions between the two countries.

According to Reuters, the US sanctions will make it more difficult for Russia to build two gas export pipelines to Europe. However, Reuters reports that the two projects are still expected to move forward. Last month, Russian oil giant Gazprom warned investors last month that the sanctions "may result in delays, or otherwise impair or prevent the completion of the projects by the group."

“The Kremlin, dependent on oil and gas revenues, sees the pipelines to Germany and Turkey - Nord Stream 2 and TurkStream - as crucial to increasing its market share in Europe.

It also fears that Western partners - needed to develop the deepwater, shale and Arctic gas deposits that will fill the pipelines - will be scared off by sanctions.

Gazprom warned investors last month that the sanctions ‘may result in delays, or otherwise impair or prevent the completion of the projects by the group.’”

With this in mind, the Russian gas giant is taking steps to reduce the impact of sanctions, even as the heightened risks are expected to drive up costs and make it more difficult for Gazprom, the Russian oil giant that’s building the German Nordstream 2 pipeline.

"The price of any project automatically increases," said Tatiana Mitrova, director of the Skolkovo Energy Center.

"Gazprom's relationships with partners, subcontractors, and equipment and service providers are severely complicated," she said. "They will all ask for a risk premium."

Siemens, which insists that it was unaware that the turbines had been moved, has said in statements to the media that it was used as an “unwitting pawn” to help fulfill a promise made by Russian President Vladimir Putin to the people of Crimea. The company is calling for criminal charges to be filed against any Russians who helped orchestrate the move. Siemens originally sold the turbines to a Russian firm called Technopromexport.

I am still not sure who wants war with russia more, the american left, or the europeans who are basically all lefties. Joking, about the 100% part.

Oh, what a crime, that evil Putin wanted to keep his promise to the people in Crimea to have sufficient electricity. Especially, after the Ukrainian fascists cut off the electricity supply.

Such behavior by Putin cannot be tolerated, of course.

A president who is caring for the people, and not just the 0.1 %, is unacceptable to the US and their obedient vasall, the EU-kleptocracy.

I am sick of this game of "let's pretend" about Russia.  Let's pretend that Crimea didn't vote overwhelmingly (95%) to secede.  Let's pretend that the ethnic Russians are not being targeted in the Donbass regions to the point that there are 2 million internally displaced persons.  Let's pretend that the same sort of ethnic cleansing would not be occurring in Crimea if they didn't secede.  Let's pretend that there wasn't every media outlet in the U.S. smearing Trump with ad hominem 24/7 during this last election cycle.  Let's pretend that Russia's RT pushing stories on fracking was interference in our elections because it was one voice among thousands that dared go against whatever narrative.  Let's pretend that Biden's son wasn't given a seat on the board of directors of Ukraine's largest oil company.  Let's pretend that the U.S. didn't conspire to overthrow the elected government of the Ukraine and was caught in a phone conversation selecting their next puppet.  Let's pretend that the U.S. isn't arming terrorists in Syria, and is the main culprit behind the troubles there.  So once you do that, you can pretend that we are somehow the victim and lash out at Russia with sanctions.  Holy fucking crap!  How can people be so fucking stupid.

The Bankers and Politicians are anxious for war and to send the yutes to the blood soaked fields as canon fodder as they line their pockets with more gold.

Look at what Obama, Bush and Hillary did to the middle east and Libya.

And the very first shot fired is not a drone, not a missile, not a rifle bullet but what’s become the American tyrants’ weapon of choice – money.

This initial sanctioning of a sovereign nation by using money, not as a medium of exchange or a national currency, but as a weapon of war is exactly why the self-serving hands of the international bankers have to be removed from the treasury of the United States, and in turn, from the Congress.

How is it Brussels, Washington and the MSM continue to successfully  push the narrative that Russia invaded Crimea against their will?

Preposterous!

'They' do not necessarily want war with Russia - they're not stupid.   What they want is to first ring-fence Russia, then starve it (what is taking place right now with sanctions), then finally, return the seat of power in the Kremlin to what it was when the West plundered the assets of the broken Soviet Union in the early 90's, which is essentially, an AIPAC-approved U.S. installed puppet.

This is now colloquially known as: The Wolfowitz Doctrine.   I.e., the Ukrainian-cum-Khazarian Jew Doctrine, if you really want to cut the crap and call the situation for what it is.

What's behind all the sanctions? Well here's one of the smoking guns that Special Prosecutor Mueller will be examining.

"Democratic congressmen on the House Judiciary Committee want to know why Attorney General Jeff Sessions abruptly settled a money laundering case in May involving the same Russian attorney who met with Donald Trump Jr. during the presidential election to offer “dirt” on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

The civil forfeiture case was filed in 2013 by Preet Bharara, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York — who was fired by Trump in March. The case alleged that 11 companies were involved in a tax fraud in Russia and then laundered a portion of the $230 million they got into Manhattan real estate.

The forfeiture case was heralded at the time as “a significant step towards uncovering and unwinding a complex money laundering scheme arising from a notorious foreign fraud,” Bharara said. “As alleged, a Russian criminal enterprise sought to launder some of its billions in ill-gotten rubles through the purchase of pricey Manhattan real estate.”

But Instead of proceeding with the trial as scheduled, the Trump Justice Department settled the case two days before it was due to begin. By then, Bharara had already been axed by the president. Bharara’s assistant did not immediately respond to request for comment.

“We write with some concern that two events may be connected—and that the Department may have settled the case at a loss for the United States in order to obscure the underlying facts,” wrote 17 Democratic Congressmen on the House judiciary panel in a letter to Sessions on Wednesday.

The Russian attorney who uncovered the tax fraud scheme, Sergei Magnitsky, mysteriously died in prison. As a result, U.S. lawmakers passed the Magnitsky Act, which levied sanctions on Russian officials—sanctions that Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian attorney, worked to reverse.

Also the attorney representing the Russian companies in the DOJ case, Veselnitskaya, is the same one who organized a meeting with Donald Trump, Jr. and top Trump campaign officials in June 2016 to offer material that could “incriminate” Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. “Love it,” responded Trump, Jr. to an intermediary.

Though been painted as a “Kremlin attorney”, Veselnitskaya does not necessarily work directly for the Russian government. She claims she has some high-level government clients.

According to emails published by Donald Trump Jr., Veselnitskaya had evidence of Clinton wrongdoing that she was offering on behalf of the Kremlin as “part of Russia and its government support for Mr. Trump.” The emails exchanged by Trump’s son and an intermediary also noted that Veselnitskaya was “in court” at the time and needed to push back the meeting. She was working on the civil forfeiture case that Sessions would eventually shutter.

In May, the Justice Department settled the case for $6 million instead of $230 million and did not demand any admission of wrongdoing. According to the lawmakers’ letter to Sessions, Veslnitskaya was surprised by how generous the settlement was, telling one Russian news outlet the penalty appeared like “an apology from the government.”

While the Congressmen didn’t cite any evidence that the two events are definitely related, they sent Sessions a laundry list of questions. They want to know if there was any contact between members of the Trump administration or campaign and the Department of Justice or the Russian attorney about the case."

Mueller is also looking into the alleged Manifort money laundering and the payments Flynn allegedly received from certain Russians, and the payments Flynn allegedly received from the Turkish Government. A grand jury is already hearing testimony. Then,Mueller will go after Donald Jr. Muller was, and probably still is, Obama's boy. The FBI chief is supposed to be limited to a 10 term, but Obama extended Muller's term another for another two years after the 10 year term expired.

The deepstate and the EU are the same side. The EU project is a CIA project. Trump and her majesty government are on the same side. Nwo vs Great Britain is ww3.

NAV's picture

The European Union is an unelected tyranny able to manufacture its own currency and reward puppets or punish opponents. When the European Union can print bailouts, it has achieved absolute control of the European economy and, as such, control over the people of Europe

The Fed and the EU -- the international bankers and their business cartels and clandestine services -- are the breakers of civilized nations for the NWO; they are destroying Western Civilization for barbarism. For universal communism.

It is they who created the EU as they did the USSR. It is they who have broken Europe before any real war has begun -- separating families, dividing opinions, destroying morale and national identity, perverting the law to divide and conquer. It is they who are sanctioning Russia's Christian people.

Xredsx's picture

Oh yeah, the long hidden war against Christianity. I think it's amazing how the people pretend to be blind to the fact that the Christian Bible prophecy is being played out. I think it is due to the fear of believing that it is the end of days... But from a different viewpoint. The message of Christ was a message about a world of enslavement by rulemakers. This is what is going to end and not the planet lol. Governments will decentralise if we win.

All of them tied at

the "hip" but some more Anglo-centric than others and the only one that matters Germany is "headin East"... If Germany is successful in throwing off Americaner the rest of the EU IS OVER!!!

This is what worries the U.S. the most and why the false flag terror in Germany has been so high since they backed away from their obligations to NATO more than 2 years ago!

Question remains: If the U.S. does a major "fireworks display" in Germany to urge them to garner support for the greater NATO project they COULD LOSE EVERYTHING when the truth is found out!

Then again the facts behind 9/11 is pretty well known and why haven't the German people demanded the U.S. military be banished from their Country since?!!!

This winter when McCain's pals, the banderist Ukro-nazis in Kiev fuck with the pipeline [you know they will] Putin should turn off the gas and let those mother fuckers in the EU freeze. Let them wait for American LNG shipped into the EU at 4X the cost.

Fuck the EU!

The Ukro-Nazis don't have to do anything. The (((oligarchs))) running the show have looted so much that the gas system is currently running on about 10% of its maintenance budget. The EU themselves have been to Ukraine to check for themselves and say they need Nord Stream II by 2019. The US is now trying to use the Polish goons to block Nord Stream II, and they are keen to go along because they (US and Poland) want Poland to replace Ukraine as transit for oil/gas to west Europe (either Ruissian or US LNG). The Poles are trying to blackmail Germany to go along with this.

I thought the EU was angry with the US over sanctions? Is this an intra-Deep State feud?

gdpetti's picture

Different departments mostly, and it is a contest for control in the deep state as well... remember the type of individuals in the establishment, deep state, Secret Government etc are all jockeying for position constantly... they work together to get what they want, but will stab you in the back when given the chance, anyone in this club (of choice) who doesn't do this, is considered weak and will be treated as such.... not a friendly clubhouse, stress levels are maintained high, anything less causes rot, same with any empire... the day it stops expanding, it starts to contract... basic entrophy applies.

THe EU is no different... this is stressing them out as they have to either 'sit down, shut up and follow orders' as all colonies do, or they have to stand up and stake their positions that threatened the USA led empire. Russia merely has to tell the truth, which is the worse thing for any empire to encounter, as the 'truth can set' their people free once they realize they've been played for idiots all their life.

Yet Russia cannot make their own turbines or other high tech equipment. Even Siemens is calling for criminal charges against their customers because they know Russia is a captured client and will buy from them in the future.

A while back it was shown in articles about sanctions and exceptions being requested that Russia could not do arctic drilling for oil without outside expertise/partnerships with US companies. Geesh, russia cannot drill it themselves considering the percentage of their economy is associated with drilling/production?

How many computer manufacturing companies are in Russia or have computers made under their company in China?

Mike Masr's picture

Blankone;

Yes, Russia can make their own turbines and other high tech equipment. This is like Russia can't build ships because they contracted France for the Mistral. It's easier to order something already made when Crimea was without power than the time it takes to build one and ship it.

Russia sends American astronauts into space, does this mean the US can't build rockets and spaceships?

Crimea was totally without power when that turbine was ordered.
