Silicon Valley "Outraged" After Google Employee Pens Viral Doc Slamming "Anti-Conservative" Culture

Tyler Durden's picture

A 10-page document penned by an unnamed Google engineer titled "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber", that criticizes the company's "left leaning", "anti-conservative" culture and calls for replacing Google's diversity initiatives with policies that encourage "ideological diversity" instead, has led to outrage among fellow Google employees and Silicon Valley pundits. The document, first reported by Motherboard and published in full by Gizmodo, reportedly has gone "internally viral" inside the company on Friday according to CNBC. The engineer's identity has not been revealed, but he reports to Google VP Ari Balogh, listed on Crunchbase as the company's executive VP of storage infrastructure products.

The document's author also wrote that employees with conservative political beliefs are discriminated against at Google and lamented about how "leftist" ideology is harmful. They argue that the company should have a more "open" culture where their viewpoint would be welcomed. The document said that improving racial and gender diversity is less important than making sure conservatives feel comfortable expressing themselves at work.

Motherboard said it had independently confirmed with multiple Google employees that the document is being widely shared among many of the company's software engineering teams: "If I had to guess, almost every single woman in engineering has seen it," a current employee told Motherboard. At several points on Friday night, the document was inaccessible because too many people were attempting to view it concurrently.

But what has prompted the ire of both internal and external pundits is the document's argument that differences in pay between men and women in the technology sector are not entirely related to bias against women, but are partly attributable to biological differences between the genders. It also called on Google to "stop alienating conservatives" and calls into question practices like "unconscious bias" training for committees that promote employees.

The 10-page Google Doc document was met with furious derision from a large majority of employees but Jaana Dogan, a software engineer at Google, tweeted that some people at the company at least partially agreed with the author; one of our sources said the same. While the document itself contains the thoughts of just one Google employee, the context in which they were shared — Silicon Valley has been repeatedly exposed as a place that discriminates against women and people of color — as well as the private and public response from its workforce are important.

"The broader context of this is that this person is perhaps bolder than most of the people at Google who share his viewpoint—of thinking women are less qualified than men—to the point he was willing to publicly argue for it. But there are sadly more people like him," the employee who described the document's contents to me said.

Numerous Google employees expressed their outrage about the paper:

In addition to Google workers, Matt Rosoff notes that outside commentators have also criticized the company, among them Slack engineer Erica Joy, whoe previously called attention to alleged unequal pay for women when she worked at Google, and has been an outspoken critic of systematic bias in the tech industry.

Instead of arguing the contents of the paper, Joy immediately went after the messenger, and said Google execs should ask themselves, "why is the environment at Google such that racists and sexists feel supported and safe in sharing these views in the company?"

Another former Googler, Yonatan Zunger, who recently left the company, wrote a scathing criticism of the post suggesting that its author didn't understand the basics of engineering - "all of these traits which the manifesto described as 'female' are the core traits which make someone successful at engineering" - and concluding that the person who wrote it should have been fired immediately.

According to Recode, Google recently hired a VP of diversity, Danielle Brown, who wrote a memo on Saturday responding to the document. She wrote that the document "advanced incorrect assumptions about gender" and that "it's not a viewpoint that I or this company endorses, promotes or encourages."

Google parent company Alphabet pointed to Brown's statement as its official comment on the matter.

The treatise comes at an awkward time, with Google under investigation by the Department of Labor for paying women less than men.

It also fits into a broader story unfolding in Silicon Valley tech companies this year. Company executives and investors have often claimed tech companies are "meritocracies," where hard work and skill are valued and race and gender are ignored. Yet an increasing number of workers in the industry are coming forward with concrete and specific stories of discrimination and harassment.

And while one can't speak for the ideological leanings of Google's huge employee base, recall that as part of the Podesta email hacks in 2016, Wikileaks unveiled Google's "strategic plan" to help Hillary Clinton and the Demcorats win the election, while at the same time tracking voters.

I have worked in many small and large companies, and I have seen many instances of women and minorities being hired. promted, and/or paid more because they are women and/or minorities. I have never seen a single instance of a woman or minority being paid less, fired, passed over for promotion because they are a woman or minority. I have seen many instances of companies training employees to treat women and minorities better, but I have never seen any training to treat men or white people better or to treat people with politically incorrect views better.

Let all the white males leave Google and it will collapse within a week.

Then they can start their own company without all the baggage.

Excerpt from The Sociopath Psyop:

A final way in which government helps psychopaths become CEOs is because government has created a nauseatingly politically correct environment in which any honest person who is in touch with reality would have to become an actor and hide his disgust with such fascism; whereas, a psychopath is already a very good actor and doesn't care about reality or integrity and actually enjoys saying whatever manipulates others into believing him and rewarding him. Socialist government has therefore given a huge advantage to the psychopath in the business world — and blamed it on capitalism! The solution is not to give government more power over the business world, but to give it less.

Same here, Jim. A few years ago our entire data base admistration team resigned when the execs promoted a minority to a manager postion despite his total incompetence as well as being on the job with our company for only 6 months. So the execs had to fly in DBA consultants at a cost of $350/hour to finish two projects with over runs of over a half a million each.

I was in a different area but asked those execs in that DBA dept what they were thinking to overlook all the excellent DBAs they had for this guy, and they said they "had quotas to meet."

In my few years in the workforce I have NEVER seen a minority or female treated worse then the managers treat a male, non-minority employee. Even now as I think of transitioning to a diff job the discrimination against white males is blatant and harsh no matter how competent you are. Thus, my next gig will most likely do "consulting" which usually involves cleaning up the mess at these "quota-driven" companies.

Google search: Conservative.

Did you mean: Liberal

No results containing all your search terms were found.

Your search - conservative - did not match any documents.

Suggestions: Make sure all words are spelled correctly. Try different keywords. Try better keywords like "liberal".

My friends... if one has the patience to wait.... this is all leading to an historical whiplash the likes of which the world has never seen.  When the dispossessed white males of the world finally wake up - EN MASSE AND UNITED - there will be a physical revolution that cannot be matched.  When they recognize that they alone have been targeted for generations by an (((alien elite cabal))) for extinction, the revenge and retribution will be a marvel to behold.  It WILL happen, rest assured.

Haha... The Alt-Right has infiltrated Google.

Seriously though, the number of women who can truly code is insignificantly small. It's better for them to be having babies.

Dear conservative billionaire investor,

The internet is invisible without a search engine.  Do you want to do something about this?  I propose creating a new search engine.  Google has damaged their brand beyond repair.  Bing has discredited themselves with paid placement.  I can put together this system for you.  I was completely in charge of one of the largest search engines in existence at one point in my career.  I am still familiar with all of the technical challenges.  Let's make this happen.  Contact me.

this comparison is not quite so hilarious as it was say six months or a year ago but it is still quite instructive.  google "most dangerous white organizations" and you get pretty much that with a little noam chomsky's "the republicans", not a bad answer if a bit dated (g.w. bush adm more apropos, imo).  but then try "most dangerous black organizations" or "most dangerous zionist organizations" and see the differences.  the black one's the funniest; it again draws the link to noam chomsky's conclusion that the republican party is the most dangerous organization.  most dangerous perhaps but hardly black.

They'll try to censor Citizens United, but Jeff Bezos can go and buy the freaking Washinton Post.  This is what we are up against. Playing this game without a search engine is like playing chess without a queen.

I don't know that people have ever funded something this scale on GoFundMe.  But I still think it is a much smaller sum than what a candidate requires to win an election.  People get all of their information from the web these days.  What we have now is basically: "Let me issue and control a nation's search results and I care not who writes the web pages."

Utopia Planitia's picture

It isn't "invisible" but I agree it is much more difficult to find what you are looking for.  Do you remember the Internet in 1995?  You could find an awful lot by guessing the URL where something of interest might be.  I was very good at that, but agree it was a difficult way to do business.

Google's supposed genius of using the "eigenvector" to find what you are looking for is actually an utter garbage idea.  Just because there are a bunch of links from (or to) something does not mean it has what you want to find.  Every day I search for many things that Google gives me nothing but piles of garbage for.  I have written TONS of sql so I know all the tricks about "how to search" for things.

Basically this boils down to the ancient challenge of finding what you are looking for in a library.  A very long time ago a process was developed called "indexing".  Do you remember the index card decks at the library?  Your chance of finding something useful in a library card catalog is orders of magnitude better than doing so through a Google search.

Google exists to generate ad revenue, not to find what you are looking for.  A secondary objective Google has (which is not publicized, but is understood by anybody with brain activity) is to mold public thought on nearly any topic you care to mention.  They purposely suppress certain kinds of content and push other kinds of content to the top of your Search return stack.  This is not something innocent.  It is a purposeful attempt to shape what people think about just about every topic imaginable.

It is truly a sad thing to be a member of a society where a substantial fraction of people know nothing more about topics than what pops to the top of a Google search list.  This all leads down a trail with a predetermined conclusion.

jeff montanye's picture

all true in spades.  i am constantly amazed at how unable to understand english google is; how it just offers up meaningless matches on words in an interrogative sentence.  yet they translate from one language to another!  how is this "expertise" not used to decipher the meaning of an english sentence?  oh and take your time, say two seconds, and bring back fewer, maybe fifty, but better results you turkeys.

and as my earlier comment on white, black and zionist organizations documents, they truly do want to control the thoughts/perceptions of the inquiring minds.  they are so not worth their capitalization.

In all my many years of computing, it has never entered my head to apply the Dewey Decimal System to the internet. How pathetically narrow-minded am I? It should be done, incredibly easy to implement, and web page owners would get to position their pages exactly where THEY want them, instead of using all those nonsense tags and SEO crap that benefits no one except Google.

Needs some kind of open source agreement, and it might even happen organically. Perhaps part of DNS?

Whole new avenues of no more Google are opening up.

The Google search thing is useless. I used to do image searches when researching antiques, I'd put in something like "Noritake china flowers, expecting to get pictures of, well, Noritake china...with patterns incorporating floral designs. Something like that. Or perhaps, pictures of porcelain flowers. In any case, I felt justified in expecting to see pictures of things featuring Noritake, china, or flowers.

But no...instead I get images of plates of sushi, some Asian guy in spandex, a polar bear on an iceberg, and that photo of Ronald Reagan laughing with all the other old white guys. And Che Guevara. Always some fucking picture of Che and Castro...why? I have never, to my recollection, ever googled these topics, yet they appear right there at the top of my results.

Fuck you Google. You have made my computer search features completely useless. Oh, and btw...you can stop showing me ads for wire shelving now. I already purchased this item...6 MONTHS AGO when I needed it, but thanks just the same.

*sigh*

Like Howard Beale said forty years ago about TV:

"This tube is the most awesome goddamned force in the whole godless world!  And woe is us if it ever falls into the hands of the wrong people....  And when the twelfth largest company in the world controls the most awesome goddamned propaganda force in the whole godless, who knows what shit will be peddled for truth on this network!...  Television is not the truth!  Television is a goddamned amusement park!  Television is a circus, a carnival, a traveling troupe of acrobats, storytellers, dancers, singers, jugglers, sideshow freaks, lion tamers, and football players!  We're in the boredom-killing business!....  You're never going to get any truth from us.  We'll tell you anything you want to hear.  We lie like hell....  We'll tell you any shit you want to hear.  We deal in illusions, man--none of it is true!  But you people sit there day after day, night after night--all ages, colors, creeds--we're all you know!  You're beginning to believe the illusions we're spinning here!  You're beginning to think that the tube is reality and that your own lives are unreal!  You do whatever the tube tells you!  You dress like the tube, you eat like the tube, you raise your children like the tube, you even think like the tube!  This is mass madness, you maniacs!...."

A third objective, which you fail to mention, is to spy on all citizens and make the information available to the NSA/CIA/FBI and all the other alphabet soup agencies out there.   If you are a ZHer you are on their list.

The web is increasingly fragile and vulnerable to the government thought police.   Unless independence and  freedom from censorship can be guaranteed it is only a matter of time until much of what is currently available will be prohibited and closed down.

Lil Dirtball... your reply is the hopeful wish of those who have created our dilemma.  However, NO one has the ability to sway nature against her will.  And those who try will be sorely and deathly disappointed. I do not have the temerity to predict some sort of heroic outcome on the part of the men of the West, however, I can assuredly predict that there will be some sort of last-ditch all-or-nothing effort exerted to thwart the evil ambitions of the culture distorters.

Watch the movies and HBO or Amazon Tv carefully to see how you are being manipulated. Do you think Mad Men was really an innocuous tv show? No it advanced the narrative that all white men are chain smoking, sexist beings whose only advancement comes from white privilege. Or how about the new show Confederate? Or years ago the mini series Roots? Schindler' List? The media is one big propaganda screen the likes of which Goebels could never imagine.
