They've also released Fields's mugshot:

Update 11: The Washington Post is reporting that the driver of the 2010 gray Dodge Challenger that was driven into a crowd of counter-protesters in Charlottesville today was registered to a James Alex Fields of Ohio. A man with that name was also booked into the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail on Saturday on suspicion of second-degree murder.

So, while it has yet to be officially announced, it looks like we have our suspect...

The car is registered to 20-year-old James Alex Fields of Ohio, according to vehicle registration records reviewed by The Washington Post. Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail Superintendent Martin Kumer told The Post that a man with the same name and age was booked Saturday on suspicion of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, failure to stop for an accident involving a death, and hit and run. Kumer said Fields is being held without bail.

The Associated Press is now reporting that the number of people injured in the attack has climbed to 26.

Update 10: City Manager Maurice Jones confirms that 3 people are dead (1 from the car attack and 2 police in a helicopter crash) and 35 more were injured following a disastrous day in Charlottesville. Furthermore, Charlottesville Police Chief Al Thomas confirmed the driver is being charged with criminal homicide.

Update 9: In a press conference following today's attacks in Charlottesville, which killed one young woman, and a helicopter crash that killed two offiers, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe had some choice words for far-right demonstrators who converged on the town: "Go home...and never come back."

“You came here today to hurt people and you did hurt people. But my message is clear: We are stronger than you. You have made our commonwealth stronger you will not succeed. There is no place for you here there is no place for you in America. Go home…and never come back.”

The driver's identity and any information about his possible motive for the attack have yet to be released.

Update 8: In the latest development in what was already a bizarre, tragic day, a police helicopter crashed into a wooded area near a gold course in Charlottesville, not far from where the “Unite the Right” rally was being held.

The crash happened around 5 p.m. ET according to clips and photos posted on twitter. A local ABC News affiliate has released audio of the emergency dispatch reporting the helicopter crash.

It is unknown if there are casualties or injuries.

Update 7: The organizer of today's rally that drew hundreds of white nationalists and various extremists to Charlottesville said he disavows the violence that eroded it. According to AP, Jason Kessler said in an interview Saturday evening that whoever drove a car into a group of counter-protesters “did the wrong thing.” He said he was saddened that people were hurt. Kessler is a local blogger and activist who described the event as a pro-white rally. He planned it to protest the city’s decision to remove a Confederate monument. He also criticized law enforcement’s response to the event, which was dispersed before speakers could take the stage. He said they did a poor job controlling the chaos to allow free speech.

Update 6: Citing a state official, AP confirms that the driver of a car that plowed into a group of marchers in Charlottesville is in police custody. Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Brian Moran said the driver, a man, has been arrested. Moran did not immediately provide a name of the driver.

Update 5: Meanwhile back in Charlotesville, the Police have shut down the block as a helicopter hovers above. Additionally, the UVA Medical Center official says one person has died and 19 were injured after a car plowed into a group of protesters in Charlottesville. University of Virginia Medical Center spokeswoman Angela Taylor confirmed the death to The Associated Press.

Update 4: Discussing today's violence and tragic incident in Charlottesville, Trump called for "a swift restoration of law and order" saying "when I watch Charlottesville, to me it's very, very sad" adding that "the hate and division must stop, and must stop right now", and notes that "we condemn in the possible strongest terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides." Trump also said that "we have to come together as Americans with love for our nation and true affection for each other" adding that "I want to salute the great work of the state and local police in Virginia ... the National Guard has been working smart and working hard, they've been doing a terrific job."

Some other quotes via Axios:

  • "Our country is doing very well in so many ways: We have record employment, we have unemployment the lowest it's been in almost 17 years; we have companies pouring into our country ... we're renegotiating trade deals to make them great for our country and great for the American worker."
  • "No matter our color, creed, religion or political party, we are all Americans first. We love our country, we love our God, we love our flag, we're proud of our country, we're proud of who we are, so we want to get this situation straightened out in Charlottesville, and we want to study it and we want to see what we're doing wrong as a country where things like this can happen."
  • "We cherish our history and our future together, we have to respect each other, ideally we have to love each other."

Reporters have pointed out that as he was leaving, he ignored reports' questions such as "Do you want the support of these white nationalists groups?" and "Would you call this terrorism, sir?"

* * *

Update 3: according to the Mayor of Charlottesville, at least one person has died: "I am heartbroken that a life has been lost here. I urge all people of good will--go home. "

Meanwhile, AG Sessions has issued a statement saying that "we stand united behind the President in condemning the violence in #Charlottesville."

"I have been in contact with our Department of Justice agents assisting at the scene and state officials. We will continue to support our state and local officers on the ground in any way possible. We stand united behind the president in condemning the violence in Charlottesville and any message of hate and intolerance. This kind of violence is totally contrary to American values and can never be tolerated. I want to thank all law enforcement personnel in the area for their commitment to protecting this community and the rule of law."

Update 2: The car has been found nearby abandoned, while Mic tech reporter Taylor Lorenz writes that earlier "reports that the car had no license plates are false. The police have the plates, the car, and the man in custody."

The car was spotted with an Ohio license plate GVH 1111

An internet search appears to confirm that the car is a 2010 Dodge Challenger:

* * *

As Mic's Taylor Lorenz further adds, the police are asking private citizens with video of the car to share them with authorities. They are said to have arrested a driver, but it was unclear of which car.

Lorenz adds that The driver was taken into police custody right after the incident. Police say the car was covered in dents prior and apparently hit by a bat. She adds that "If you watch the earlier part of my stream you can see anti-right wing chasing after a Lexus and throwing rocks, bottles, a shoe. This car was not the one that mowed people down. That was a differ grey car."

Lorentz also notes that according to "several police officers at the station here think the guy running people down wasn't malicious. They said the driver was scared. His car was being swarmed by protesters and some of them were getting violent (like the guy who punched me/threw me down)"

* * *

Update 1: Witnesses told BuzzFeed News that the numbers of injured are unknown but witnesses saw at least six people injured, and one person appeared to be very badly injured and was receiving CPR.

Reporter Wiliam Turton tweeted that two of his friends marching with the Democratic Socialists of America had been hit by the car and were injured, with one suffering a "probably broken leg and the other a concussion".

*  *  *

As we detailed earlier, a car plowed into a group of counter-protesters at a white nationalist rally in Virginia on Saturday afternoon, news reports said. An Associated Press reporter saw at least one person on the ground receiving medical treatment immediately after the incident: there were several hundred protesters marching in a long line when a car drove into a group of them, then quickly backed out and sped away. Video on social media showed more than one vehicle involved in the incident.

Different angle showing the start of the car's acceleration...

Shocking scene (at around 2:35 in) shows the hit and run as the car quickly reverses back out and away...

And the aftermath...

The vehicle quickly left the scene...

Emergency services are on site...

So you people have no understanding of the composition of your own movement? What do you think white nationalism is? What do you think people like Richard Spencer believe in? Why do you think people were giving the Nazi salue and shouting "Jews Will Not Replace Us!" last night? Have you once read a 4chan thread?

There is a very obvious Neo-Nazi presence in the Alt-Right, and it may be the most significant ideology.

tmosley's picture

We are past the point where anyone gives a fuck what you neck swingers think.

general ambivalent's picture

Well, that's fine. But just be forewarned that advocating the slaughter of your betters will only result in another dead society where you turn on one another. The violence will only increase if you build off of blind violence.

general ambivalent's picture

No, I'm not one of them. But curious that you think a reference to logic implies so...

Barney Fife's picture

Our goal is to recreate 1947 social structure of America, permanently. THAT was the America of its prime. Anti-communist, strong communities, respect for law, respect for each other, solid morals inculcated into the culture. Why would you oppose that?

general ambivalent's picture

Is that what neo-nazis want? I don't think so.

I never said anything about whose side I am on, but the fact that so many people react negatively to basic logic (that there are clearly major sections of the Alt-Right which are fascist, and thus the people in the photos are unlikely to be shills) suggests a very clear problem with your movement. Beyond that I think 1950s America was just another degenerate society which people romanticise out of nostalgia. In reality America was in a peace race with the Soviet Union, involved in countless foreign wars and occupations, was trying to forget the insanity of the World Wars and Mutually Assured Destruction, developing a CIA-based culture, and was reliant on the funny money developed through the Marshall Plan, thus suggesting the falsity and unsustainability of such a society.

This is aside from the degenerate nature of a society that replaces morality with the law of competitive private interest (moral relativism with economic determinism). The reality is that 1950s America wasn't that much different from the irrational exuberance that the Fed relies on today. If people really want to change society then it requires changing the fundamentals of that society, nostalgia won't fix those core problems.

Perhaps idolising the 1950s Mind Control Justice Warriors of the government is why your movement is such a mess.

Ideology is more or less useful ,plastic& negotiable. Biology isn't. Needs must.

Very truthy& well written,sarge.

Nobody in the Alt-right is fascist. Name one Alt-righter who espouses the virtues of the marriage of the State and industry. You cant.

Sorry, but I don't think an America that had needlessly entered 2 world wars and one civil war, embraced the Federal Reserve, Social Security, and the income tax was, "America in its prime."

"There is a very obvious Neo-Nazi presence in the Alt-Right..."

Oh for goodness sake, stop wetting yourself. "Very obvious" to those w/a predisposition to look for it (as in confirmation bias). But by all means do show us your data that confirm how much of the alt-right is composed of pseudo-goose stepping media whores like Spencer. Hint: you begin by counting...

Herd Redirection Committee's picture

They had 4 or 5 guys giving Richard Spencer Nazi salutes at a talk he gave.  Out of 300-500 people, 5.  But those 5 were 'conveniently' caught on film, from multiple angles, basically making it look like the whole crowd was throwing up Nazi salutes.

Bigly's picture

Tell that to the general, above.

I still day those 5 were PLANTS.

Are there some nazi and kkk fans out there? Yes. But not so numerous.

The irony is the more the far left pushes on the string, the more converts to kkk way of thinking there may be.

They are fools.

Regardless let us keep our eye on the real enemy. Those behind this coordinated worldwide movement...

general ambivalent's picture

Red Ice TV has 130,000 subscribers on youtube. Main speakers at this event were to include Mike Enoch, Richard Spencer, and Baked Alaska - all fascists/neo-nazis of some kind. Even if you could prove that Neo-Nazis are a small part of the movement (and the Red Ice figure shows you cannot), they hold significant positions at least for this particular event.

But tell me again how I am wrong because of your feels.

Folkvar's picture

So what if they are Nazis. This is what happens when you push whites too far.

general ambivalent's picture

Well, the argument is in regards to how prominent they are in the movement, not whether or not they are good for the movement. Although the people above are suggesting they are just isolated shills, suggesting they are not good.

So you are a fool for taking their side.

the artist's picture

None of the people you named are Nazi or neo-Nazi. Nobody in the Alt-right are fascists or socialists. The movement is about anti-Statism and Liberty peppered with national or racial pride.

Naturally there are people who occupy a range of ideas similar to those in the black pride movement.

Tell us how Spencer and Baked Alaska advocate for the marriage of state and corporate interests...

general ambivalent's picture

Okay, nobody is anything because you say so...

You're an idiot, but just in case anyone else reads this, do you think they discuss National Socialism for fun?

Also worth watching for those who think 'everything I don't like is fascism.'

the artist's picture

Nope, people are not socialist or fascist unless they are socialist or fascist. Conflating racial pride or liberty or anti statism with a desire to converge state and corporate interests is idiotic.

Who is "they" that discuss national socialism? Please, Once you name them then please explaint to us all how they are socialist. remember that discussion and advocation are two different things.

I am happy to debate the merits but you have to get the issues straight.

Please link to where Spencer et al advocate for Socialism, redistribution of wealth or the marriage of State and corporate interests.

California Nightmares's picture

A time will come when being called a racist or a nazi or Klansman will no longer upset you. "Racist" no longer means anything.

Jethro Dull's picture

Yes, I've seen a 300-400% increase in Confederate flags of late here in NC --- even a gigantic one on a flag pole along I-95. A year ago they were virtually non-existent. People who were afraid or ashamed the last 8 years to display are putting it out in the open. Folks who have never thought of owning one are displaying them. No Nazi flags though. Hegelian harvest.

Wishbone Ash's picture

National Socialists are not racsist bigots bent on genocied. Nor is the Alt Right. THE LEFT wants that projected and will contiue to sabotage any of these demonstartions. They did this in Russian Germany etc. This is their M.O. With the Left Wing Jew Press behind them it will be hard for most Mediiocre Soft Minded Boutgeioise Americans to sus this out. Good for Trump not to be a knee jerk I like our Predisnt Trump! BRAVO TRUMP.

Withdrawn Sanction's picture

Indeed. It is the left that bereft of ideas. The 20th century is a complete testimony to the bankruptcy of their ideas and ideals. If you were them, what would you have left? Violence and self-loathing, and that's exactly what we see.

".....these revolutionary Marxist are going to be in for a very rude wake up call...."

First of all, these folks are far too ignorant of what  Marxism is about. Don't write foolish accusations. These silly little, ignorants have all bought into the SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVEMENT that's emerged from the Democratic Party and people like George Soros. This is actually, what Soros relishes doing.

It's pure propoganda these fools have bought into to divert the people's far their more urgent needs: decent paying jobs, a fair health care system, and housing  that doesn't cost them unaffordable prices.

HoyeruNew's picture

and how EXACTLY is the Left responsible for not "having decent paying jobs, a fair health care system, and housing  that doesn't cost them unaffordable prices"?

Sean7k's picture

Glad you asked: one, they failed to learn a skill or subject which pays decently. Just because you go to college you are not guaranteed an income. Ignorance of basic economic principles is your own fault.
Two, making the statement "a fair health care system". Where in the Constitution are you guaranteed a right to health? You do have the ability to maintain your health so you have little to no need for a healthcare system or better yet, study medicine.
Three, housing prices are a reflection of supply and demand, plus the leftist dependency on government and regulation. You see, building a house is fairly simple, unless you have a thousand regulations, licenses and taxes added to it.
Finally, your expectation of a particular standard of living regardless of your value to society is a classical case of darwinisim at work. I just hope you don't
take us all down with your imbecility...
