Update 12: Charlottesville Police have officially named James Alex Fields, Jr., 20, of Ohio as the suspected driver in an attack on a crowd of counter-protesters that killed one and injured 26 earlier today, NBC reported.

They've also released Fields's mugshot:

Update 11: The Washington Post is reporting that the driver of the 2010 gray Dodge Challenger that was driven into a crowd of counter-protesters in Charlottesville today was registered to a James Alex Fields of Ohio. A man with that name was also booked into the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail on Saturday on suspicion of second-degree murder.

So, while it has yet to be officially announced, it looks like we have our suspect...

The car is registered to 20-year-old James Alex Fields of Ohio, according to vehicle registration records reviewed by The Washington Post. Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail Superintendent Martin Kumer told The Post that a man with the same name and age was booked Saturday on suspicion of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, failure to stop for an accident involving a death, and hit and run. Kumer said Fields is being held without bail.

The Associated Press is now reporting that the number of people injured in the attack has climbed to 26.

Update 10: City Manager Maurice Jones confirms that 3 people are dead (1 from the car attack and 2 police in a helicopter crash) and 35 more were injured following a disastrous day in Charlottesville. Furthermore, Charlottesville Police Chief Al Thomas confirmed the driver is being charged with criminal homicide.

Update 9: In a press conference following today's attacks in Charlottesville, which killed one young woman, and a helicopter crash that killed two offiers, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe had some choice words for far-right demonstrators who converged on the town: "Go home...and never come back."

“You came here today to hurt people and you did hurt people. But my message is clear: We are stronger than you. You have made our commonwealth stronger you will not succeed. There is no place for you here there is no place for you in America. Go home…and never come back.”

The driver's identity and any information about his possible motive for the attack have yet to be released.

Update 8: In the latest development in what was already a bizarre, tragic day, a police helicopter crashed into a wooded area near a gold course in Charlottesville, not far from where the “Unite the Right” rally was being held.

The crash happened around 5 p.m. ET according to clips and photos posted on twitter. A local ABC News affiliate has released audio of the emergency dispatch reporting the helicopter crash.

It is unknown if there are casualties or injuries.

Update 7: The organizer of today's rally that drew hundreds of white nationalists and various extremists to Charlottesville said he disavows the violence that eroded it. According to AP, Jason Kessler said in an interview Saturday evening that whoever drove a car into a group of counter-protesters “did the wrong thing.” He said he was saddened that people were hurt. Kessler is a local blogger and activist who described the event as a pro-white rally. He planned it to protest the city’s decision to remove a Confederate monument. He also criticized law enforcement’s response to the event, which was dispersed before speakers could take the stage. He said they did a poor job controlling the chaos to allow free speech.

* * *

Update 6: Citing a state official, AP confirms that the driver of a car that plowed into a group of marchers in Charlottesville is in police custody. Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Brian Moran said the driver, a man, has been arrested. Moran did not immediately provide a name of the driver.

* * *

Update 5: Meanwhile back in Charlotesville, the Police have shut down the block as a helicopter hovers above. Additionally, the UVA Medical Center official says one person has died and 19 were injured after a car plowed into a group of protesters in Charlottesville. University of Virginia Medical Center spokeswoman Angela Taylor confirmed the death to The Associated Press.

* * *

Update 4: Discussing today's violence and tragic incident in Charlottesville, Trump called for "a swift restoration of law and order" saying "when I watch Charlottesville, to me it's very, very sad" adding that "the hate and division must stop, and must stop right now", and notes that "we condemn in the possible strongest terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides." Trump also said that "we have to come together as Americans with love for our nation and true affection for each other" adding that "I want to salute the great work of the state and local police in Virginia ... the National Guard has been working smart and working hard, they've been doing a terrific job."

Some other quotes via Axios:

  • "Our country is doing very well in so many ways: We have record employment, we have unemployment the lowest it's been in almost 17 years; we have companies pouring into our country ... we're renegotiating trade deals to make them great for our country and great for the American worker."
  • "No matter our color, creed, religion or political party, we are all Americans first. We love our country, we love our God, we love our flag, we're proud of our country, we're proud of who we are, so we want to get this situation straightened out in Charlottesville, and we want to study it and we want to see what we're doing wrong as a country where things like this can happen."
  • "We cherish our history and our future together, we have to respect each other, ideally we have to love each other."

Reporters have pointed out that as he was leaving, he ignored reports' questions such as "Do you want the support of these white nationalists groups?" and "Would you call this terrorism, sir?"

* * *

Update 3: according to the Mayor of Charlottesville, at least one person has died: "I am heartbroken that a life has been lost here. I urge all people of good will--go home. "

Meanwhile, AG Sessions has issued a statement saying that "we stand united behind the President in condemning the violence in #Charlottesville."

"I have been in contact with our Department of Justice agents assisting at the scene and state officials. We will continue to support our state and local officers on the ground in any way possible. We stand united behind the president in condemning the violence in Charlottesville and any message of hate and intolerance. This kind of violence is totally contrary to American values and can never be tolerated. I want to thank all law enforcement personnel in the area for their commitment to protecting this community and the rule of law."

* * *

Update 2: The car has been found nearby abandoned, while Mic tech reporter Taylor Lorenz writes that earlier "reports that the car had no license plates are false. The police have the plates, the car, and the man in custody."

The car was spotted with an Ohio license plate GVH 1111

An internet search appears to confirm that the car is a 2010 Dodge Challenger:

* * *

As Mic's Taylor Lorenz further adds, the police are asking private citizens with video of the car to share them with authorities. They are said to have arrested a driver, but it was unclear of which car.

Lorenz adds that The driver was taken into police custody right after the incident. Police say the car was covered in dents prior and apparently hit by a bat. She adds that "If you watch the earlier part of my stream you can see anti-right wing chasing after a Lexus and throwing rocks, bottles, a shoe. This car was not the one that mowed people down. That was a differ grey car."

Lorentz also notes that according to "several police officers at the station here think the guy running people down wasn't malicious. They said the driver was scared. His car was being swarmed by protesters and some of them were getting violent (like the guy who punched me/threw me down)"

* * *

Update 1: Witnesses told BuzzFeed News that the numbers of injured are unknown but witnesses saw at least six people injured, and one person appeared to be very badly injured and was receiving CPR.

Reporter Wiliam Turton tweeted that two of his friends marching with the Democratic Socialists of America had been hit by the car and were injured, with one suffering a "probably broken leg and the other a concussion".

*  *  *

As we detailed earlier, a car plowed into a group of counter-protesters at a white nationalist rally in Virginia on Saturday afternoon, news reports said. An Associated Press reporter saw at least one person on the ground receiving medical treatment immediately after the incident: there were several hundred protesters marching in a long line when a car drove into a group of them, then quickly backed out and sped away. Video on social media showed more than one vehicle involved in the incident.

Different angle showing the start of the car's acceleration...

Shocking scene (at around 2:35 in) shows the hit and run as the car quickly reverses back out and away...

And the aftermath...

The vehicle quickly left the scene...

Emergency services are on site...

Missed the point didn't you ding-dong? You're proving my exact point.  Yes, Nazi's have the right to say what they want and march around waving swaztika's but then they also have to confront the reaction those words have.  Most on this comment board are celebrating what they are saying, not the 1st Amendment.

My grandfather fought Nazi's. What was yours doing?...strolling around in a KuKlux clan hood hiding his face?

Billy the Poet's picture

So now you're claiming that your point was that the ACLU supported the constitutional rights of Neo-Nazis? Then why didn't you say that?

It's a shame that you can't simply admit your error and instead trot out your dead grandfather as a shield. For what it's worth, my grandfather was a foreman at PPG and deemed too valuable an asset to send into the field. He's earned his rest and I'm not so inconsiderate as to ask him to fight my battles for me.

Thanks Billy. Well done. The right of free speech is the right of free speech, but the country is filled with people who think that only speech they approve of is worthy of being spoken freely.

Nazi's are leftist. They are "National Socialists" that fall into the Bernie Sanders camp of "Democratic Socialism". Same goes for Fascism. They are  all leftist ideologies and have nothing to do with right wing Conservatism and advocating for the rights of the individual.

Leftists and communists embraced all workers of the world.

Nazis were for the Aryan race only.

Embraced... Is that some SJW term for killed? Yeah... They were embraced. Hitler's kill score is a joke compared to the commies. But don't let the lack of knowledge prevent you for spouting your dogma. Try Islam. See how they "embrace" you.

Koba the Dread's picture

No! Not at all. Trotsky was an internationalist. Lenin switched from interntional communism to national communism in 1923 and Stalin as well as Hitler were national communists. Trotsky got the axe for his beliefs.

What do you think it would take to restore America to what it once was? Key word there is "think". Or better yet, what do you think it'll take to make America into what you think it should be? Left, right or center?

the artist's picture

These people who show up at "white' rallies waiving the swastika are not Natzis. Natzis were socialists, fascists with national and racial pride who also scapegoated the jews.

At best you can say these neo-Nazis are embracing the racial pride angle or the anti-zionist angle.

When did "Nazi" drop the Socialism from their definition?

A: They did not.

Are there even any groups that call themselves "neo-Nazi"? If so they are rare. I would bet that if you interviewed the flag waivers they would not be in support of a socialist movement.

The Antifa Left calls these people Nazi Fascists which is Orwellian double speak designed to deflect and Project on to their enemy precisely what they are and are doing.

It is the Antifa crowd, The Burney crowd, the Socialist crowd that are the actual fascists. It is plain in their attitude towards capitalism...or more correctly put, "neo-capitalism" which ironically is modern fascism.

So to review...

1. The central state imposes a bastardized version of fascism that they call Capitalism.

2. The central state then tacitly supports actual fascists aka Antifa against their created strawman they call Capitalism in order to institute a National Socialism of sorts.

3. Antifa aka Marxists dont know that they are actually Fascists and fighting against themselves.

4. The Alt-Media growing movement is relabelled Alt-right and associated with the Nazi symbolism.

5 MSM worshippers everywhere will remain totally confused by all of the labels so that nobody ever has to talk about the specific issues.

general ambivalent's picture

Time to read a book.

One cannot be a communist and a fascist at the same time.

The political spectrum does not just apply to economic interests. The political and cultural positions are also important.

In terms of economy, it is not redistribution alone which makes a position Leftist, it is the means and end goal of that redistribution. For example, the Nazis wanted to redistribute wealth to women for having German babies and have businesses support traditional German activity. This is far more right-wing than a free market business promoting dildos and zionist porn.

Fascism and traditionalism simply do not fit very well in our modernist conceptions of a political spectrum. That is why so many have a hard time placing fascism. Just to give some perspective, traditionalism is essentially an extreme form of fascism and does not even appear within the political spectrum, as it is so far to the right.

I'm not a Nazi, or even a fascist, but I know that the free market will never save white people. Compare your free market music to this:

the artist's picture

Time to read a book yourself.

Fascism is the marriage of the state and corporate interests. Name one communist government, socialist government or western "neo-capitalist government that does not employ that tactic to their advantage.

Fascism and any other 'ism' are not mutally exclusive. That is why we can label Obama a Socialist etc.

Everything in the State

Nothing outside the State

Nothing against the State

general ambivalent's picture

You have an ignorant perspective based on the surface of things, and you did not address anything I said.

Fascism isn't communism just because of your feelings. Again, read a book before talking down to people about that which you have no clue.

the artist's picture

Ok idiot,

The reason I did not respond to your comments is because you began them with a moronic statement.

Even this last comment..."ignorant perspectice based on the surface..." I got news for you, Your perspective is based on the shallow, temporal and strict textbook definitions that fail to delve ito the deeper meaning.

Ill bite. What is fascism? To find out read the definition that I supplied for you from the dude who popularized the modern concept. Go and look it up yourself, including the derivation of the term from Roman times. I actually addressed what you said. I never said fascism is communism. I said it is a part of any of the "isms" that you care to name. All of the isms are systems of control and Fascism is just a tool utilized in some respect by all of them...except one...Capitalism-proper.

Morons like you are deliberately obtuse.The marriage of industry and government was always fascism prior to Mussolini, was fascism under Mussolini and Hitler etc. and will be fascism when emplyed by any other system of govt. Fascism at its core is the Central State with all other entites subservient to it, industry, individuals, groups/corporations.

Let me make it simple for you. Fascism is not Communism. Communism uses Fascism as a tool, Socialism also uses Fascism as a tool, as does neo-Capitalism. Communism can also use Capitalism as a tool to further their goals if desired. See how that works. Totalitarianism takes many forms with many tools of control layered over one another. Some allow certain aspects of freedom and others do not. Ultimately the differences in all of them are in the subtleties of wealth re-distribution.

To understand the modern world you need to move on from the books you read in Govt 101. Until then you will remain boring.

general ambivalent's picture

You're retarded, and your 'I know you are but what am I?' fallacies will never change that.

Anyone can see that you are colluding communism and fascism as a single thing in the post above.

the artist's picture

Thick, ignorant or stupid...doesnt matter which one it is clear that even you can read so go back up and re-read the thread. My first post I did not even mention communism. It is you that conflated communism as fascism and attributed it to me. I never "colluded" anything, whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean. I said repeatedly that fascism is a tool used by various 'isms'. You cant grasp the concepts of mutually inclusive/exclusive etc.

Clear to all that you are a moron. Yawn...

Overarching point of the day is that Marxist media and the Central State are deliberately projecting and deflecting what they are on to the Alt-right, Liberty  and anti-Statist movements...namely fascism. These movements are anti-fascist in that they are pro- private property and liberty and against the convergence of industry and government.

Critics of these movements are the actual fascists

If you are defending them then go fuck yourself.

Barney Fife's picture

You're a little textbook fucker, aren't you?

Listen boy, and I can call you that since my DAD fought in WWII, and my grandfather was in Europe in WWI, so I am absolutely certain that I have more life experience (and college credits, 99.999% certain of that) the one thing that you gain from life experience that you do not get some rote recital of a textbook is wisdom, as well as a healthy skepticism and discernment as to what to question and not just regurgitate.

The wisdom part you're just gonna have  to shut up and be patient for. Because all wisdom really is, is spending a lifetime listening when you'd rather have been talking.

Thank you Barney. Said it better than I did.

No sunshine, it is all about people who have had a guts full of tyranny, being lied to, cheated out of their hard earned money.  I wouldn't care who the allies are in the fight against the common Globalist enemies.

It really is a bit rich, as an example, the Warmongering American Government on the International stage, support Saudi Fascists, Israeli Racists and literally dozens of brutal and totallitarian regime's.

Pal you need to have a good look at yourself. You worry about a few loonies with sheets over their head. The USA Government is committing "Crimes Against Humanity" on a daily basis. Murdering children on a regular basis to satisfy their bloodlust. It is what you all should be very concerned about. With their track record, eventually they are going to do the same to all you people.

Obviously I'm not a Yank. Sorry about being a little unkind there. I'm not an American. Personally I believe the US of A, should get the fukout of everyone else's business and then you may well be able to settle some of your own problems.

With all due respect to honest hardworking American people.
