Key Highlights Of Trump's Afghanistan Speech Leaked

Tyler Durden's picture

Tonight at 9:00 pm, Trump will address the nation, unveiling the administration's "New Path Forward" for America's engagement in Afghanistan and South Asia as discussed yesterday. While we will have a more thorough preview shortly, moments ago the key highlights of the upcoming speech were leaked online courtesy of Fox News' Jennifer Griffin, and are as follows:

  • The president has signed off on 4,000 more US troops to Afghanistan; not clear he will talk numbers tonight. No talk of withdrawal.
  • In speech tonight Pres Trump will ask "region to do more,"  will ask "India and Pakistan to do more to bring Taliban to negotiating table.
  • Trump strategy to include negotiating w/ Taliban. In past Qatar negotiations failed because Pres Obama announced troop withdrawals: US official

Of the items above, the key one is of course, the deployment of another 4,000 troops which however was to be expected, as noted yesterday that "anyone harboring any hope that with two generals whispering strategy in Trump's ear, and with anti-interventionist Bannon out of the picture, that Trump will announce an accelerated withdrawal of US troops from the war-battered country, should probably not hold their breath."

The new deployment was also discussed over two months ago in "Pentagon To Send 4,000 Troops To Afghanistan In Trump's Largest Deployment Yet", however that particular deployment had been put on hold as long as Bannon was Trump's chief advisor. In light of the latest White House shake up, it was only a matter of time before Trump greenlighted the escalation that his general advisors had been urging for months. The "time" in question was exactly 48 hours since Bannon's departure.

@ Pres. Trump:

This bunk about leakers is easy to fix:

Give similarly-worded-but-different copies to key individuals, and see which one gets on CNN.

Arrest leaker, give them a lengthy stay at ADX Florence for treason.

Or, save the taxpayers some money, and hang them on the WH Lawn.

What should we do in Afghanistan?

<<<   Pack up the shit and get the fuck outta there

This fucking guy is more of the same. If they can turn him they can turn anyone.

Who remembers the 'surge" in Iraq? The plan was to send in more troops and sweep majestically onward to victory and lo and behold that's just what happened. Except it didn't.

While I don't recall exact figures the number of troops sent over in the "surge" was actually very small, just a few percent increase over the level of troops already in place. The real change that happened was diplomatic. The US stopped treating Sunni chieftains as the enemy and started working with them. That changed the dynamic and led to a decease in attacks on US troops. But the success was attributed to the "surge" because that was politically necessary to preserve the honor of the US government.

Trump's plan sounds very similar. Four thousand troops really isn't that many. He apparently wants to try diplomacy with the Taliban and encourage regional involvement.

I doubt that US troops will ever leave Afghanistan, after all we've had troops in Germany, Japan and Korea for more than half a century. But you have to take what you can get and if this plan works as well as the "surge" then let's give it a try.

Don't forget to shout, "Yeah! We won!"

Sounds like 4,000 more poppy field guards to me.  We have an opiod epidemic and that heroin isn't gonna grow itself.

Billy the Poet's picture

Is there any reason why opium has to be grown in Afghanistan? Couldn't the CIA or whoever just have some grown in South America instead?

adanata's picture

Oh, they're bringing in plenty of drugs from SA and running them through Mexico. Cocaine is huge by itself but the Mexicans actually make herion in Mexico. They are very creative in how they move it. Like using ancient catapults to literally toss it across the border. The Central Banks love these guys.

The good news is that the SJWs are going to attack Columbia with bats because 1492.

"negotiating w/ Taliban", yeah, that's a good one. Trump had to ban Bannon before this speech, because Bannon was against all these multi-trillion dollar, taxpayer funded Middle East wars. The Trump party, run by military neocons and goldmanite neocons, has become the war party.

Billy the Poet's picture

Are you suggesting that Trump should not use diplomacy in an effort to end hostilities in Afghanistan?

sickavme's picture

So the poppy fields are safe...

Thanks trump, it's clear that after your ouster of bannon that your transition to the darkside is now complete....

Paul Kersey's picture

The word, diplomacy, is not in Trump's vocabulary. I'm suggesting that he not waste another American life or U.S. taxpayer dollar on a war that the Soviet Union found out (the hard way) was not winnable.

Billy the Poet's picture

Even a total and immediate withdrawal would require some negotiation with the Afghans. So apparently you don't want that either.

Paul Kersey's picture

I seem to recall a total withdrawal from Nam, but any real negotiations happened well after the fact. Sorry, Billy, but when it comes to withdrawal from Afghanistan, I've got to go with another poet:

"Just slip out the back, Jack, make a new plan, Stan
Don't need to be coy, Roy, just listen to me
Hop on the bus, Gus, don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee, and get yourself free…"

Billy the Poet's picture

The withdrawal of US troops from Vietnam was brokered by the Nixon administration in 1973. But you're referring to the fall of Saigon in 1975 which was some ugly business. So why would you suggest that you'd like to see the same thing happen again?

Paul Kersey's picture

Billy, Nixon did the opposite. He prolonged the war so that he could get elected. You might want to read this:

"Nixon Prolonged Vietnam War for Political Gain—And Johnson Knew About It, Newly Unclassified Tapes Suggest

Nixon ran on a platform that opposed the Vietnam war, but to win the election, he needed the war to continue"

http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/nixon-prolonged-vietnam-war-for...

Anyway, I suggested that we get the hell out so that the financial bleeding will stop, we'd stop fucking up the lives of our soldiers and because there is nothing to win by staying there unless you are a war profiteering, military contractor. Capiche?

Billy the Poet's picture

I'm aware of that. But the fact remains that the withdrawal of US troops was negotiated in the Paris Accord of 1973, Nixon's machinations in 1968 notwithstanding.

Anyway, I suggested that we get the hell out so that the financial bleeding will stop,

"Nowhere is this more evident than with the war in Afghanistan, the longest war in American history - 17 years. I share the American people's frustration. I also share their frustration over a foreign policy that has spent too much time, energy, money, and most importantly, lives trying to rebuild countries in our own image instead of pursuing our security interests above all other considerations...

Since taking office, I have made clear that our allies and partners must contribute much more money to our collective defense, and they have done so. In this struggle, the heaviest burden will continue to be borne by the good people of Afghanistan and their courageous armed forces...

We are not asking others to change their way of life but to pursue common goals that allow our children to live better and safer lives. This principled realism will guide our decisions moving forward. Military power alone will not bring peace to Afghanistan or stop the terrorist threat arising in that country."  -- DJT, 8/21/17

caconhma's picture

Mr. Presidento,

Please fuck out of Afghanistan. We, the old enough, did see the same troop surges in Vietnam and we know how it ended. Afghanistan will not be any different!

America does not have combat-proven generals. Instead, we have bureaucrats in a military uniform. Their advice is no good for America or American people.

You fucking moonbats know absolutely nothing about anything, but remain cocksure of your idiocy. Bad chemicals will do that.

I guess it really doesn't matter, as you are all impotent loser nothings who have no impact on anything. If it gives you some psychic pleasure to believe superstition or nonsense, knock yourselves silly.

Just remember every once in a while that you are fucking lunatics.

Yes they did. It can be costly to extricate your from a quagmire of your own making. But better the cost be paid in Federal Reserve notes than in the blood of Iraqis and Americans.

Maybe. I do wonder about your absolute certainty that your view is correct. Could even Ron Paul have brought home every US soldier in a just a few months?

i believe it's called being commander and chief...

walk out with another speech and surprise the MIC.

but because Trump loves the military industrial complex, the banksters, goldman boys, and FED behind it, then there is no way he would do it

Being a dead patriot is fine but did JFK's plan to drawn down troops in Vietnam work or did some lead get in his way?  This is a perfect example of your unrealistic thinking in all matters Trump.

ncircle and provoke Iran?

That's a real possibility which I'd considered and it's the kind of thing we could discuss if you didn't reduce every situation to "Trump is bad!"  I find it difficult to converse with an intractable partner.

mkkby's picture

Ask president Soros what the vital interest is.  Soros is currently in control of US policy, and is turning europe into a muzzie ghetto.  The money for fake protests must be shut down.  Prosecute him or declare him an enemy combatant and send in some spooks.

BTW, with Bannon gone who's leaking?  In this case we can thank the traitor for saving us from another boring, bullshit speech.

Mr. Trump has no power at all.  NO opinion that has any effect.  MR. Trump is now left to picking out suits that fit well and golf clubs.

No idea what you mean.  But got to say that I AM amazed at how quick this showdown was.  And how lying and deceitful.  And how willing that insiders were to exercise cowardice and dishonesty in order to save their own hides.

Trump will be treated more kindly now.  Captive pet.

My feel is that he is moving more troops there to increase his bargening. I think he will give the Taliban the "Roman Ultimatum" of "Subjegate or we will crush you." The main issue with this approach is is that he has to follow through if they think he is bluffing.

WhackoWarner's picture

Sorry bud. But Trump is now gone gone gone.  NOTHING left of USA USA.   NO chess game in 3D.  NO plans coming to fruition....Trump is gone.

USA USA has no president.  They do have other stuff who just won the lot.

Billy the Poet's picture

Are you suggesting that when George W. Bush employed a very similar plan which eventually led to the SOFA agreement and the withdrawal of a majority of troops from Iraq it was an example of the Chimp playing 3D chess?

Why would you believe that this time it's different and the little game of smoke and mirrors which worked before won't work again?

WhackoWarner's picture

C'mon.   Trump has been neutered. Took 8 months.  IF only the idiots could do the same worldwide.

TRUMP is gone.
