Norway Removes Greenpeace Ship From Statoil Arctic Drill Site

Norway’s coast guard has removed Greenpeace protestors from a safety zone near Statoil drilling operations in the Korpfjell field of the Barents Sea, according to a new report in the Maritime Executive.

The protestors used kayaks to infiltrate a 500-meter exclusion zone around the Songa Enabler on Thursday in order to attach a large globe to the rig. On it was a statement from environmentalists calling on Norway to end its drilling in the Arctic.

Statoil called the stunt “illegal and irresponsible” before summoning the authorities to remove the protestors’ vessel, Arctic Sunrise.

On the other hand, Greenpeace Norway argues the coast guard’s actions were unlawful.

“The Norwegian coast guard doesn’t have the right to board or remove our ship,” said Truls Gulowsen, head of the local branch of the environmental group.

“Protest at sea is an internationally recognized lawful use of the sea, related to the freedom of navigation. We are taking action against Arctic drilling in an area where our rights to protest are protected under international law. The Norwegian government cannot unjustifiably interfere with that right.”

So far, the government maintains that it acted within its rights when it removed the ship due to the clear establishment of the exclusion zone.

To this claim, the group retorts:

“While Greenpeace recognizes that Norway has the right to establish a safety zone around a fixed offshore installation, there should also be room to exercise the right to protest in a safe and peaceful manner.”

Environmentalists continue to protest drilling in the Arctic and the potential opening of the Lofoten islands to exploration.

Greenpeace is suing Norway in a trial set to begin in November, arguing that “granting licenses to open a new oil frontier breaches the Norwegian Constitutional right to a healthy and safe environment for current and future generations and contravenes the Paris Agreement.”

WTF??? this could be a Soros ship filled with pirates and/or rapefugees!

isn't this protected infrastructure? they should have got shot warnings and then real shots?

I am shure an offshore station can afford a couple of predator drones while waiting for the navy.

Global warming caused by Norwegian oil, Australian coal, and Canadian tar sands oil don't count as global warming, becuase they hate Donald Trump. The same goes for those huge SUV exports from German car makers.

German branded SUVs are made locally in the US for the US market.

Notice that I did not type, "Germany", although, the part that emits CO2, the gas guzzling engines, ARE made in Germany, usually.

Hey, Green Peace!  You're all cashed up now.  Why not hit them where it hurts?  Go into competition by producing cars that do not run on oil and sell them (without govt handouts of course).  Let 'em drill as much as they like.  They won't be selling much oil when you undercut them with cars and generators running on Unicorn farts now, will they?  (Unicorn farts?  Vapourised Skittles as a fuel source???)

You got the will.  You got the manpower.  You got plenty of funding from your dupes, I mean, supporters.  Where's the GreenPeace car?  Where's the GreenPeace house?  You've had plenty of time.  Your excuses have just been cut to zero.  Show us your wonderful alternative.  Protest or Production?  Or is one of them too hard for you?  Why not row them kayaks the complete distance?

Chances are their boats use either diesel or gas, which by the way comes from oil which they are trying to shut down.  An inconvenient truth

Scandalnavian hypocrites! Without oil revenues and international predatory banking, you would all be fisherman, and shepherds, and far more respectable!

I suspect most of the people on the good ship lollipop aren't Scandinavian.  Trust fund babies from LA sounds more likely.

DemandSider's picture

He wasn't referring to Good Ship Lolipop, he was referring to smug Norwegians using oil profits to buy electric cars.

Rebelrebel7's picture

People don't choose their families, they choose their professions. The act of hypocrisy involves a conscious choice. If green peace members owned shares of oil companies,  they would be considered hypocrites.

Jamie Dimon , Lloyd Blankfein,  George Sorros, and Hillary Clinton exemplify hypocrisy in America.

Scandalnavia and Switzerland exemplify it globally!

Norway should have used anti-ship missiles on Greenpeace.

acheron2016's picture

I was going to say that.

You notice after the Russians threw the terrorists in a cage sitting on the Siberian tundra for 3 months they haven't been back!

Greenpeace is an eco-terrorist, as opposed to islama-terrorist, organization.  By and large it is is a military problem that requires a military solution.

Green Fleece should be worried about nuclear pollution. .

The entire global economy is basically the combination of one giant check kiting scheme, in combination with one giant pyramid scheme.

Now that I've said  my peace, hopefully, I can go to sleep.

Have you ever even licked a pussy?  I doubt that you have done so given your lack of tact.  Let me clue you in.  It does not taste like fish and if it does then you need to run away as fast as you can.  If she smells like your armpit after three days of no showers then you don't want that one.  That is gross shit even if you are drunk.  She is dirty and you don't need that.  There is your lesson.  Now go away.

I sure hope the US Navy doesn't manage to get rammed by the Artic Sunrise at some point.  Who knows these days?

DemandSider's picture

Being forced to pay for those useless, expensive, toy boats crashing into things makes me alot angrier than Greenpeace, I can tell you that. The U.S. Department of Offense, out there swinging like some drunk with it's pants down, and no money to pay the Communists for their bachannal of death, while American kids drink lead in their water. Depressing.

ItsAllBollocks's picture

So now I'm conviced zerohedge has been infiltrated and overrun with trolls. The negativity on this article and to Greenpeace in general disgusts me. You can continue to destroy your once great US completely, I don't give a shit but when you turn your hatred to those doing their best to prevent forever damaging the Artic, well the lot of you can just fuck off!

DemandSider's picture

Now, about that North Sea oil The U.K. has been relying on all these years...

PT's picture

Anyone can protest.  It's easy to criticize.  But now they are big enough and have been around long enough to put their money where their mouth is and start showing the world viable alternatives.  Can't do that?  Then perhaps their "cure" is worse than the "disease".

Still relying on that which they claim to despise?  They're killing their own reputation all by themselves.  The rest of the world will not shut their own eyes just because the Greenies refuse to open theirs.

Manipuflation's picture

Bollocks, I have seen you post better than that.  Do you want to retry it?  I say stupid shit all of the time when I fail to get my point across.  Sometimes you get junked.  It's seems to me that you are defending Greenpeace.  That is a problem right there.  It is just like that jackass Paul Watson.  These people are insane and have too much "donation" money.  Protesting is fine but when you endanger peoples lives you cross the line.  It's not Greenpeace, it's GreenWAR.  Advancing a political agenda in this manner is an act of war.

I don't deny that global warming is occurring but I doubt that it entirely man made.  No one really knows what the fuck is up and I have a degree in science.  It really annoys me that people who have no scientific background jump on a politcal badwangon and broad sweeping comments such as your, "forever damaging the Artic.".  BULLSHIT.  You don't know what is going on.  I would be a liar if I said I did.  To be so disingenuous is a disgrace to yourself.

You see you are one of those people who think humans are omnipotent and that everything we do is so important that the entire universe should care.  WE are special somehow.  No we aren't.

Get it through your head that we are not special.  Get it through your head that we all die.  Your are so daft that the next thing you will say is that humans caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and people will believe it.  Let me tell you something.  We humans are a part of this earth.  If we destroy it and destroy ourselves then so be it.  You are another one of those "I want to live forever" types.  I have bad news for you.

ItsAllBollocks's picture

My concern is an oil spill. It has absolutely nothing to do with global warming, global cooling or who funds what. If there is a spill in the Artic or Antartic it is forever. Forgive me if I give a shit. I don't care or know about the politics of Greenpeace but I do know people who have been onboard and know they do actually care, not like most armchair critics (not fingerpointing) who think they have a clue.

As for my troll comment, in the last few weeks I have noticed a definate shift in the attitude of the comments posted here. Haven't you?

Manipuflation's picture

I didn't attack you Bollocks.  I was simply stating why you are getting junked that bad.  I am not against you.  If you bring up Greenpeace you can expect to be junked.  As you may note I do not deny.  It is very philosophical at that point in that what are we supposed to do about it?  Commit mass suicide or what?  Think it through to the logical conclusion.  Iphones are not going to to save us and neither is Greenpeace.  We like to think that it matters but it doesn't.  It just does not matter.  Accept it because you have to accept that you are going to die don't you?  We humans think that control the universe when we actually control nothing.  I believe in recycling and being efficient but that doesn't does not change the fact that our time is limited as a species.

Look at how many other species are listed as "invasive".  They are thriving in this environment.  They not be the one you like but why do you like what you like?  You were told to like this or that species.  Your oil spill?  There are bacteria that LOVE that sort of thing.  Just because it is isn't a polar bear doesn't mean shit.  If you go extinct you are weak.  This planet and the life on it adapts quite readily.  Humans tend to think that once we are gone everything will be gone and that is simply not the case.  We are not special.  We are simply part of the ecosystem unless you believe aliens put us here.

One weakness that I have is I think we should, as the human race, put everything we can towards space exploration.  Stops the wars and that waste and lest see what we can do.  I love Star Trek but warp drive is not possible according to Einstein.  Nothing can go faster than the speed of light.  Well, do we really know that?  Before we even worry could we even build anything that get close to the speed of light?  How about half of the speed of light?

And yes, I do believe that there is life out there somewhere.  The mathematical probability of that being true pretty overwhelming for the Milky Way itself.  Imagine all of the other galaxies that Hubble has shown us.  We are not special.

ItsAllBollocks's picture

Funny, I don't recall saying anything about being special and for me, giving up is not an option. Perhaps it's the medication I'm not on....

ReturnOfDaMac's picture

"Nothing can go faster than the speed of light" -- be careful my friend!  Quantum entanglement is real.  We've done it, we do it, and so have the Chinese.  Information is traveling across the universe instantaneously.  If information can do it, in the limit ...
