Why Nobody Can Trust Facebook

Tyler Durden's picture

Via CreateSend.com,

It becomes harder and harder to overstate the corruption and treachery of the online ad industry. Lord knows I've tried.

Among its other accomplishments, Facebook has become famous for its lunatic metrics and bizarre rationalizations.

You would think a company that built its business on the promise of putting sophisticated data to work for advertisers would have the sense not to release numbers that are patently ridiculous.

But time and again Facebook has undermined its credibility by making claims that are easily proven to be false, and then defended these claims with statements that are absurd.

This week it was reported that Facebook was claiming to reach 41 million Americans between the ages of 18-24. If Facebook reached every American between 18 and 24 they'd still be 10 million short. There are only 31 million of them.

But Facebook's ability to reach imaginary people isn't just limited to its home base here in the US. According to their metrics, they have also developed the amazing  technology to reach non-existent people all over the world.

Below is a chart from AdNews in Australia that sums up Facebook's "branded storytelling."

We are so used to bullshit from the online ad industry that this latest round of nonsense should surprise no one.

The online ad industry -- the most corrupt and fraud-laden medium anyone's ever seen -- famously gave us the wonderful acronym NHT for Non-Human Traffic. Now Facebook has given us NEP's -- Non-Existing People.

Facebook has been ridiculed all over the world for this obvious fakery. And they will pay the exact same price they've paid every time they've been found to be lying about their numbers -- nothing, nada, zilch. The marketing and advertising industries have reached a point of such exquisite incompetence that nothing any of these creeps does has any consequences. They are liars and we are fools.

I loved Facebook's explanation for their metrics:

"They are designed to estimate how many people in a given area are eligible to see an ad a business might run. They are not designed to match population or census estimates."

There must be a planet on which that preposterous nonsense makes sense, but I'll be damned if I know where it is.

Is it any wonder Facebook is fighting to the bitter end to block 3rd party monitoring and auditing of its numbers? If the numbers they brazenly release to the public are this dishonest, can you imagine the horseshit they feed their credulous clients in private?

Yes, but they reach them on their computers AND their phones, so everyone counts twice.

FuckBook will go the way of MySpace.  One of these days the big advertisers paying billions to FB will realize they are wasting their money.  Many of the FB accounts are FAKE and represent not actual PEOPLE, but non-human entities such as articles on Wikipedia.

FB is a house of cards waiting for a stiff breeze to come along.  The biggest DUPES are the companies blowing money on FB ads.

I'll just leave this here:

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/05/14/facebook_trust_dumb/

Zuckerberg was chatting with an unnamed friend, apparently in early 2004. Business Insider, which has a series of quite juicy anecdotes about Facebook's early days, takes the credit for this one.

The exchange apparently ran like this:

Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard

Zuck: Just ask.

Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS

[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one?

Zuck: People just submitted it.

Zuck: I don't know why.

Zuck: They "trust me"

Zuck: Dumb fucks

Went to sign up for facebook bailed when they started asking for credit card numbers and other personal questions I still get e-mail notifications of friends even though I dont even have a bloody profile as someone here said if your not paying for it then YOU are the product being sold

cheech_wizard's picture

I created a dummy profile that I never entered a single bit of information into. (I used the name of my uncle's dead son). Needless to say, the account gets a friend request about once a week. These go unanswered. And yet the friend request's keep coming.

Damn! I have to find some people and develop a site called Ass Book, where people can post pictures of their ass and tell everyone where it is and what its doing. Has to be a least 2 trillion to be made. Later, it can be expanded to Crotch Book and BoobieBook. Now don't steal my idea!

Wasn't there an article (probably here on ZH) in the last few months about China having dozens if not hundreds of "Ad Click" boiler rooms?   The whole industry is mush.

Of course, dont forget, there was a time when only a few tech nerds could charge millions for building websites.   The online ad industry will go this way as well at some point.

Shouldn't the number of people in a given area "eligible to see an ad a business might run" be less than the total population in that area?  Eligibility implies filtering from a total available number.

Anyhow, it doesn't matter as long as advertisers are convinced they are getting value out of it.  Essentially all this does is imply the true cost per person is higher than it really is.  The advertisers are not being forced to use Facebook.  I don't understand why this author cares and is so emotional about it.  If he/she is using Facebook and not getting value out of it, then stop using it.  We have more imporant issues with government agencies that do far worse to us than private companies.

About seven years ago I said social media was a fad and people laughed at me.

I have a feeling I'm due to be proven right, pretty soon.

Fuck facebook and all the old loser high school "chums" that I found hanging out there.

I don't give a fuck about your garden.

I don't give a fuck about your children, grandchildren or your Aunt Muffie.

I Don't give a fuck that it's your birthday.

I don't give a fuck what you had for dinner at some fancy restaurant.

I don't give a fuck that your kids are sick, that your car is for sale, that your husband got a raise or that your bowels are moving once again.

Go the fuck away.

Yep, I agree with everything you say about social media except this:

  • "I have a feeling I'm due to be proven right, pretty soon."

I honestly don't think phacephuq will disappear. There are countless numbers of mindless people whose lives revolve around ((updating their phacephuq status)).

I struggle to even know what that term means but take it away and they'll be lost and mentally destitute.

Facebook is doomed to follow the path of my space. The only people who will hang on are the narcissists  that always post selfies to fish for compliments.

The author seems to be missing what is obvious. ASSBOOK simply admitted with those Numbers that they run overall one third of phony accounts within this age group nominally, in fact they run at least 70% of fake accounts no more than 300 millions worldwide most dead inactive.

The problems is that advertising companies own ASSBOOK so they lie and put money from their left pocket to right pocket that is all, they know it is bullshit and that economy is in free fall no hope for future sales so they continue this bizzare spectacle starring Zuker the robot.

What ASSBOOK business model is all about ? spying for NSA,human psychological experiments for DOD and selling stocks.

FB turned faces into stinky asses.

I would estimate that there is at least one fake id for every real id. I know people who were making up fake id's so they could play those community games like Farmville.

One of my biggest regrets is that I got Zuckered into signing up for a Facebook account a few years ago. It happened when I commented about an online news article on MSN. Since then, I have been badgered daily with  emails from Facebook about how many followers I have, and invitations to contact people who want to “friend” me. When I tried to cancel my account, I was denied, and asked if I still live in Thailand.

?????

For the last four months, I have received a daily email telling me I had 56 followers on Facebook. Recently, the number increased to 57. It makes me wonder: who is this mysterious follower who is willing to have their identity reduced to the number 57,  and has nothing better to do than follow my virtually empty Facebook page?

Facebook is racist. Lots of people around here are leaving Facebook. I think they're lying about uuser #'s and new users.

It's not just online any more. Our mall offers "free" wifi, but only if you log into F***book. That way they can monitor your movements in the mall.

redmudhooch's picture

The spooks own Facebook, it ain't going nowhere, even when there are 0 users..

Its just propaganda-brainwashing at this point. Everyone is leaving facebook.

fb is a fantasy world for the terminally self-absorbed. Avoidance of reality is their silent motto for the sake of maintaining their liberal agenda. Nothing substantive will ever be allowed for discussion especially if it relates to the constitution, conservatism or limited government. At some point you either drink the liberal kool-aid or realized how absurdly "fake" it is as a social network.

Never been on Facefuck and never will so who cares??

Naruhodo's picture

Who cares? Well have you visited any site which uses FaceB* or Goolag's ad trackers? Chances are that you most likely have, and so your machine ID/unique is already in their database.Regardless of whether you hide behind a VPN or TOR, think of this simple idea.

Have you registered your real personal information before such as booked a plane flight or login to an online bank portal with the same device that you're posting on ZH now?

If yes, then congratulations to you. Face*, Goolag and big brother already knows who you are by matching 2 instances of the same unique/machine ID.If they could sell this to more bidders, that's big money to be made, I'm sure big brother would always be interested.

That's how it works, the identifying "mark of the beast" follows your device itself all around the internet, but if you register an account with them it makes even easier for them to track you.

Mazzy's picture

Why not 6 trillion?

MadRunner's picture

I just go on FB to like my wifes pictures. That little attention keeps me out of the doghouse.

Naruhodo's picture

I read many here says that they don't own a F*Book account, so they're safe.

No, you're not. Ad-Trackers made by F*Book and Goolag registers every machine ID/device uniquely on the internet. Any of your webmail, favourite websites, government and discussion boards who are on their partner lists installed with their ad trackers, you've already given away your personal details as soon as you've enlisted on their database.

No VPN or TOR will conceal your tracks because their ad trackers identify you uniquely with the permanent "fingerprints" of your device with good precision regardless of where you're based. So it's basically a futile effort to hide behind a VPN which gives a false sense of privacy.

You might be posting radical opinions behind your VPN connection, then as soon as you disconnect from it and log into say a banking account which also has FB/Google ad trackers in them, you're just as good as busted.

Naruhodo's picture

FaceB* and Goolag will still profit despite their members dropping out. The real killer feature of their ad-trackers is to identify every machine uniques out there and sell it to interested buyers. Don't overlook it's importance if corporations implement them on their sites, they'll follow your device/machine uniques all across the internet because this is something you can't spoof easily. Your CPU ID/motherboard identifier and mobile's IMEI is hardcoded from day 1 it comes out from the factory.
