1 In 5 Students Endorse Violence To 'Prevent' Controversial Speakers

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by Nikita Vladimirov via CampusReform.org,

A new survey published by The Brookings Institution finds that about one-in-five undergraduate students approve of using violence to shut down controversial speakers.

A majority of undergraduate students at U.S. four-year colleges and universities also agreed with a hypothetical protest in which a group “opposed to the speaker disrupts the speech by loudly and repeatedly shouting so that the audience cannot hear the speaker.”

According to the survey, 51 percent of students agreed that such a demonstration would be acceptable, while 49 percent disagreed. Not surprisingly, the response to the hypothetical scenario was also largely partisan, with 62 percent of Democrats approving of the protest, compared to just 39 percent of Republicans .

“I find the numbers in the above table to be highly concerning, because they show that a very significant fraction of students, across all categories, believe it is acceptable to silence (by shouting) a speaker they find offensive,” wrote John Villasenor, the author of the survey and a Brookings Nonresident Senior Fellow.

The study further found that 19 percent of responders said that they approved of using violence “to prevent the speaker from speaking.” An 81 percent majority, on the other hand, did not approve of the violent approach.

“A surprisingly large fraction of students believe it is acceptable to act—including resorting to violence—to shut down expression they consider offensive,” Villasenor wrote.

While 39 percent of responders indicated that hate speech is protected by the First  Amendment, 44 percent said that it is not protected by the document. Another 16 percent remained undecided.

In one survey question, the students were also asked if they prefered a learning environment where certain views are prohibited versus an open learning environment “where students are exposed to all types of speech and viewpoints.”

According to the study, 53 percent of responders said that they prefer the former while only 47 percent chose the latter.

“The survey results establish with data what has been clear anecdotally to anyone who has been observing campus dynamics in recent years: Freedom of expression is deeply imperiled on U.S. campuses,” Villasenor wrote.

“In fact, despite protestations to the contrary (often with statements like ‘we fully support the First Amendment, but…’),” he asserted that “freedom of expression is clearly not, in practice, available on many campuses, including many public campuses that have First Amendment obligations.”

Villasenor surveyed a pool of 1,500 undergraduate students at U.S. four-year colleges and universities between August 17 - 31. The margin of error is between 2-6 percent.

And that is why the great American experiment appears to be coming to an end.  Thank you Lefties and Dimocrats.  May you burn in Hell.

Hey, parents- this is where you're spending your hard-earned (or expensively borrowed) money to send your kids.  Any second thoughts about this whole setup yet?

Your comment highlights something the snowflakes continually forget, or never knew to start with.

The typical modern human has a view into the future ranging from three hours to two weeks, and the snowflakes accurately perceive that the left has an overwhelming advantage in capability to field violence over that timeframe.  But they are oblivious to history; never heard of the Pinkertons, Pinochet, the Argentine dirty war, Duterte.  They fail to notice countless examples around the world of how reactionaries and conservatives can match or exceed the left for violence over the long run, once violence is legitimized.  They don't appreciate the hard work that was done to delegitimize political violence in the past, or how that benefitted the left more than anyone.  They are evil and stupid.

Manthong's picture

Well said… the blindered left is at a decided disadvantage in the violence department once they set that standard.

I don’t believe polls, especially ones that claim 39% of republicans also oppose free speech. but you really know you are being lied to when they don't mention the reason why so many young (and old) americans oppose free speech. Discussions about racial inequality.

Back in the good old dys at the U of Wisconsin, Madison, I watched some of the bigtime demonstrations from the side.

At one for support of Cesar Chavez and the pickers' union, I flicked grapes at the righteous wankers as my protest. I found it difficult to believe that mobs of messcan enyuns would be a fine addition to schools that I was paying for. Dang, if'fn it turned out that way.

If the USA just transliterated the Mexican law on immigration and enforced it as Mexico does, it would be fine.

Exactly, 20% of the population is really stupid.  That is why you need to keep one hand on your pistol while being polite in confrontations with unknown potential idiots.  I have had conversations with retards that killed a guy for a pack of smokes.  What I have discovered in confrontations of the worst kind with people and dogs, even a dog can sense when you are not afraid and when he is about to be killed.  Bad dudes can read you. Stay calm and collected but never let them circle you.  If you do the game is up.

GreatUncle's picture

But if you do not object to that action then surely you must agree?

So it is a 100% loss of free speech in educational institutions.

A long time ago now at uni attended a nuclear good or bad debate, freedom of speech so you could hear both sides of the story.

Make an informed decision on both arguments not some stupid left wing point of view that is normally a lie to trick you.

Overtly shouting out someone's message so it can't be heard is what Google, Facebook and YouTube are already doing in a more quiet form, but in a way that is plain to everyone both On The Right and On The Left with half a brain. The acceptance of the quieting of alternative viewpoints by all the sources The Left holds in high esteem (The Media, Social Media, Government) helps to form the individual ethics of people on The Left - in other words "Silencing dissenting viewpoints is the right thing to do, because it's what Good people do."

This has to be understood before any discourse can be had with someone on The Left: They truly believe they are doing the right thing, because it's the virtue signals they've received. Any attempt to bring them to another course of action via logic and reason will fail unless their foundation of believing these other sources who are silencing dissent are in the wrong.

In this "low trust" society no one will believe me, but...

I once lived in a place where people could agree to disagree. Anyone could speak their mind without worry of violence or imprisonment.

Ha! I know you think I'm making this up.

BrownCoat's picture

"The Left: They truly believe they are doing the right thing"

There is a chapter in 'Brave New World Revisited' that discusses this. These indoctrinated souls have essentially lost their ability to choose. Their conditioning prevents any kind of reality from seeping in.

Well...one in five. Thats better than I would have believed. That means 4 out of 5 do not believe in violence to stifle free speech.

NoDebt's picture

I bet more than 1 in 5 actually believe in using violence.  They know it's a loaded question so they give the "PC" answer and then continue on to their Antifa meeting across campus.

Keep in mind that 1 in 5 voices affirmation of a hypothetical, a theoretical plausibility.

Then there's actually getting punched in the face, which is a horse of a different color.

1 in 5 believe in using violence (maybe low)...but, then when they are in a pack, the other 4 will join in on the violence because of pack behavior.

What these sorry ass napkins don't get is that their speech is offensive to me. So in their twisted world view I have the right to use violence to shut them up. See how easy that is snowflakes? Still care to dance?

Polls measure the success of media propaganda. They are not designed to elicit truth about the public's innate opinions and ideas, but to determine how best to tweak the state's messaging. Given the widespread mistrust of the media, why does anyone care about polls anyhow?

"College has become a playground for the ill-informed activist.  Education is dying and rational intelligence is declining."

Yep, and the next step will be ever increasing violence on all sides. All according to plan so the security state can be strengthened to choke off all remaining rights in the devious design of "protection of the people". Fascism with it's unbridled security state is required before the elites can usher in their New Feudal World Order.

I suspect they may reconsider when the rest of use decide it's okay to use violence to shut down expression we consider offensive. As long as they stick to their little leftist enclaves where the crooked politicians tell the police to stand down as they smash, burn, and beat people they'll probably be okay. If they ever find the ovaries to venture out into the real America they'll find things are different.
