Earthquake Detected Near North Korea Nuclear Test Site, USGS Can't Confirm If "Natural Or Man-Made"

Tyler Durden's picture

The USGS reports that a shallow (5km deep) magnitude 2.9 earthquake was reported in North korea, 23km NE of Sungjibaegam, close to where the country conducts nuclear tests.

The temblor was reported at 01:41:08 / 1:41 am (local time epicenter). The epicenter was at a depth of 5 km (3 miles).

While initial reports suggest that the quake was not caused by a nuclear test, the USGS has said it is unable to conifirm, yet, whether the quake was natural or man made.

Until there is confirmation that this was a natural aftershock, the market is not taking any chances, and the USDJPY has sold off notably on the report. As discussed previously, officials have been expecting the North to do something provocative surrounding either its national holiday on October 10 or the start of the Chinese Party Plenum next week.

In North Korea related news, earlier in the day Russia announced, somewhat amusingly, that North Korea officially deems Crimea as part of Russia, suggesting that relations between Moscow and Pyongyang continue to grow even as China appears to have become increasingly disenchanted with its provocative neighbor.

The North Koreans are the crazy ones not to be trusted?

The last time the USA nuked Asia, this is what happened...

After the bomb went off, Hiroshima was transformed from a dull backwater city into a momentary vision of Hell. Among the horrors witnessed by survivors were the ‘ant-walking alligators’—creatures of the blast that seemed neither human nor animal, neither living nor dead.

When the ‘Little Boy’ exploded 750 yards above Hiroshima during the Monday morning rush hour, no-one had ever seen anything like it. A great light filled the sky, a sound that could flatten buildings rolled across the city and 80,000 people died instantly. The statistics are rightly famous: up to 40% of the population dead, two thirds of the city destroyed and fires burning at 4,000C. But the experience of survivors in the immediate aftermath is less well-known, and far more disturbing.

thats what happens when you worship your government.... no matter which govt

“The Last Train From Hiroshima” is a clear-eyed catalog of every such horror, and not for the weak-stomached. Mr. Pellegrino follows his survivors as they trudge through wastelands that make “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy read like “Goodnight, Moon.” He describes the so-called “ant-walking alligators” that the survivors saw everywhere, men and women who “were now eyeless and faceless — with their heads transformed into blackened alligator hides displaying red holes, indicating mouths.”

The author continues: “The alligator people did not scream. Their mouths could not form the sounds. The noise they made was worse than screaming. They uttered a continuous murmur — like locusts on a midsummer night. One man, staggering on charred stumps of legs, was carrying a dead baby upside down.”

Oh well. Unit 731 candidate.

Also, pssst...first President to drop nuke (atomic) bombs on people was a (shhh) Democrat.

Shitonya Serfs's picture

Other Democratic President successes:
first President to setup internment camps
first President to be impeached
second President to be impeached
first President to marry his cousin
President who took us into WWI
President who took us into WWII
President who took us into Korean War
President who signed the Federal Reserve Act
President who took us into the Great Depression
President who gutted the Glass-Steagall Act
President who confiscated gold (Executive Order 6102)

Well THAT did not happen until a few weeks later.

But, your outrage is misplaced.  You DO realize that our firebombing of Tokyo and other major cities killed and maimed far more people.

Or is it the one stop shopping aspect of the atom bomb that you do not like?  Burn them out over months, or all in one day.  I am not sure there is much difference.

but there's no pedophiles in DC? or Marfa? OK.....

How nice...

WHoever down voted you needs to down vote me too.  Ga-head!

Nukes and the warmonger machine are the excuse to keep the public attention away from the real nuclear arsenal:  The US treasury, exchange stabilization fund, and the bond market.  I still cannot fathom how pricing money at worthlessness is "stimulus", yet that's the story.  The financial war machine is on full throttle and exporting infation, imposing sanctions, and forcing the Western banking way on everyone else or face regime change is the real threat.

END the FED.  Restore humanity.  END slavery.

Richter scale-  2.0-2.9  Minor, Felt by some people no damage to buildings.

These happen all over and hundreds of times a day.  Keep that in mind when trying to assign a fantasy nuclear detonation to one.

More than a few around Soda Springs, Idaho and Lincoln, Montana. The preppers maybe prepping a nuclear option.

Central Oklahoma has many 2.0s.

No one cares.

Yellowstone or North Korea, it's TEOTWAWKI!!!

historian40's picture

Exactly.  Frankly, it's not proven concretely that North Korea even has a nuke anyway.  It's all based on assumption.  Some "underground explosions" that could have easily been conventional, then follows the assumptions and consensus of what is believed to be true.  The claims of the NK government do not amount to fact.  It is in their interest to say they have nuclear weapons, even if they don't, for a bluff to keep aggressors away.

News reports are that North Korea has shattered the mountain they test under.

It could be the mountain is starting to fall in on itself.

China has expressed exactly that concern recently.

Seems like quite a long delay for a "natural" aftershock. (And how exactly would an unnatural aftershock take place anyway?)

any_mouse's picture

Who cares? NK wants to defend their nation, such as it is, against the Global Force for The Petrodollar and the Central Bankers.

Can you blame them?

Who would not want to be safe from the US Federal machine?

If the CSA had had a nuclear option...

historian40's picture

The CSA wouldn't have done that, I don't think.  They were more about thrusting off the tyrannical Federal regime, not causing mass destruction and killing civilians.  That didn't become popular and acceptable in "civilization" until WW2.

Now, if the Lincolnites had a nuke, they would have used it, no doubt.  They were the conquerors, and burned, raped, and pillaged.  They had paid mercenaries shipped over from Europe as well.  They had no brotherly love for the people of the Confederacy.

Where's the obligatory picture of Dong looking through the binoculars at the blast with one hand down his pants, while his monkey minions cheer in amazement?

Txpl9421's picture

Over the next couple of weeks when they are showing video of Kim, look for one of his cloes aides.  He wears those idiot looking hats, he has glasses and he is the perfect minion.  He is always cheering just a little too hard, clapping a little too enthusiastically, and he just looks like a clown.

Seriously.  He must be the court jester or something.  Kind of makes the whole bat-shit-crazy meme come together.

Wouldn't it be frakin' hilarious if that volcano over there decided to explode and wipe the Norks off the face of the planet.  The Christain right would be sporting wood because they would think it was God's work in favor of a "good" Christian nation!

They would be intolerable to live with.

Dear Pentagram, Pure Evil Criminal Psychopaths at the CIA / Deep State,

You expect The American People to believe that North Korea has ICBM Tech that can reach the Criminal Fraud UNITED STATES, CORP. INC.?

That's the PsyOp you're going with?

Sure. I'll play along.

Kim just had a parade with Fake ICBM parade floats a month or two ago. Yet, the Pentagram expects the Public to believe that between last month & now NK suddenly has ICBM Tech?

What changed?

They don't have the Tech. Never had the Tech. Don't think they'll have the Tech anytime soon either.

China, however, is a different story. They have the MERV, Boost & re entry ICBM Tech the Pure Evil War Criminal Clintons sold them. China is more of a threat to the CIA / MIC Petro Dollar Hedgemony via the "Silk Road." But I digress.

Deep State, you've been exposed for the Pure Evil War Criminal Treasonous Seditious Psychopaths you are.

Whatever trust, loyalty & respect you thought The Amercian People had for the "Intelligence" Community has been Squandered.

And, you have absolutely no one to blame but your Criminal selves.

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld served on the board of a Swiss company that in 2000 sold light water nuclear reactors to the government of North Korea, which critics including Pentagon hardliners say could be used to produce nuclear weapons.

Rumsfeld's involvement in the $200 million deal with the Zurich-based engineering company ABB is seen as an embarrassment to the Bush administration, which vehemently opposed the deal during the 2000 presidential campaign, reports the London-based Guardian. One could draw the conclusion that economic and personal interests took precedent over non-proliferation, said Steve LaMontagne of the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation.

The ABB deal was part of the Clinton administration's policy of stabilizing the region by offering North Korea oil and light water reactors in exchange for access by inspectors to the governments atomic facilities. The policy was vehemently opposed by George W. Bush and his foreign policy advisors including Rumsfeld's deputy, Paul Wolfowitz who argued that the light water reactors could produce weapons-grade plutonium.

And despite placing North Korea in its "Axis of Evil," the Bush administration apparently has fewer concerns about ABB?s reactors now that Rummy's running things at the Pentagon. In January, the president authorized $3.5 million to keep the project going.

Here's the suspect / circumstantial at best report created by the Criminal DIA headed by a known perjured Criminal Clapper.

Conceivable - Adjective. Capable of being imagined or grasp mentally.

The DIA white paper stresses Pyongyang’s “significant headway” in the nuclear race and its “possible” (italics mine) ability to develop miniaturized nuclear warheads able to fit on the tips of its missiles.

This “possible” ability is drowned in outright speculation. As the report states, “It is conceivable that North Korea’s nuclear weapons program has already considerably advanced and it is possible that North Korea has already achieved the miniaturization of nuclear bombs into warheads and has acquired nuclear warheads.”

historian40's picture

The claim that NK can even produce a nuclear explosion is like a house of cards.  Sure, the Koreans say they have it, but that's something they would say if they wanted to deter an attack by an aggressive nuclear empire.

Every claim concerning Korean nuclear weapons is based on assumption, from tremors to picking up an isotope on the wind far away.  They start out with the picture they want, and maneuver data in that direction.   This deceptive practice is used frequently.

Spectre's picture

NK test sites are simply an area for Iran to play with their own nukes.
