Turkish Lira Tumbles As Erdogan Re-Escalates US Tensions

Tyler Durden's picture

In early trading, the Turkish Lira is slumping (having tagged pre-US-Visa highs) as President Tayyip Erdogan showed no retreat from a diplomatic row with the United States, castigating Washington for what he called an "undemocratic" indictment against his security detail.

As Reuters reports, his comments may further dash hopes of a quick resolution to an on-going diplomatic crisis between the NATO allies. Both Ankara and Washington have cut back issuing visas to each other's citizens as ties have worsened.

"They say the United States is the cradle of democracy. This can't be true. This can't be democracy," Erdogan said in a speech in Istanbul.

"If arrest warrants are issued against my bodyguards in absentia ... in the United States, where I went upon invitation, excuse me but I will not say this is a civilized country."

And the reaction (in admittedly thin markets) is clear...

Erdogan should never be allowed back in the USA.

Same goes for his hired thugs he calls a security detail.

This clown is a bully, and he deserves a knockout punch to his face.

I don't like him either.  But he's not playing along with the US, so what's happening with the lira is probably just the soft-core version of what happened to Khaddafi.

Soft core is all they can use ;) Anything remotely approaching hard core would be NATO vs NATO, and that brings a whole new level of pain to the EU and the JUSA.

ScratInTheHat's picture

I don’t think NATO is going to keep Turkey with the way the country is going. It’s not going to go well for Turkey IMO

so who is the real bully?

what about the USA in concert with their boy Gulen in Penn.  attempted a Coup de etat?  should Erdogan take exception to the attempt?

RedBaron616's picture

You believe that nonsense? That was just an excuse to excute his own coup and take over everything in Turkey. Looked like a false flag operation to me as it was so poorly executed. Yeah, some guy out in the sticks in Pennsylvania is going to take over Turkey. If you believe that one, I have a bridge I need to unload in Brooklyn fast and will give you the best price.

I suppose you think Erdogan the real gentlemen who brings his thugs with him wherever he goes. I guess you'll be getting a check from him shortly for your propoganda.

100% right on the false flag. Marmaris where he was staying is a port city in a bowl and you have to zig zag up the mountain, then across the saddle then down the other side then a 20 minute ride to the airport.  100's of places for an easy ambush. But right around the southern point off the coast is a large Turkish navy base (with US donated fast cutters amongst its plethora of ship types).  Plenty of protection and perhaps helos to take him out of the area rather than the long drive to the airport.  I vacationed in Marmaris 5 years ago. Very nice place and many small towns you visit if you take the boat cruises.

"This clown is a bully, and he deserves a knockout punch to his face."

Hear, hear, who's talking! This qualification is most deserved, hands down, by Washington.

Talk about bullying: puting the B-52 nuclear bombers on 24/7 high allert again and recalling 1000 pilots from retirement for 3 years.

In that light, I can even feel some sympathy for a (admittedly dictatorial) president like Erdogan who has the guts to stand up against Washington!

Hear, hear, who's talking! This qualification is most deserved, hands down, by Trump (since he reneged on is election promises and started his warmongering against North Korea, Iran, Russia, China, etc.

Talk about bullying: puting the B-52 nuclear bombers on 24/7 high allert again and recalling 1,000 pilots from retirement for 3 years. Happy retirement: you might get shot down after all (reminds me of the QuarterQuell of the Hunger Games).

Viewed in that light, I can even feel some sympathy for that (admittedly dictatorial) president Erdogan who at least has the guts to stand up against Washington!

Don't underestimate what is going on in Turkey. Erdo is practically a dictator and has jailed (or worse) 10's of thousands - whoever he feels is against him. Turkey is strategically important, as one can see by the fact that Putin swallowed losing a jet to a trigger- happy Turk.

Turkey and Iran are the big players in the ME and Turkey is full steam ahead with new Ottoman Empire dreams. Hard to see any good outcome for the near future.

Solution: US get the hell out of the Middle East!

Kick them out of NATO and divert wall funds to Europe to seal off THAT border.

They will be leaving NATO soon and joining Russia, China and Iran. Smart choice the way the US is going down hill.  May all NATO soldiers come back home soon; each one wrapped in a plactic garbage bag.

Will "Erik" do Turkey next? (https://southfront.org/uae-planning-invide-qatar-using-rebranded-blackwa...)

Might as well make him President at this point if "Knee-Pads-in-Chief" or should I say his "detachment" gave Erik the "green light" for it!

With act(s) of desperation this deep, no wonder we're calling these guys up (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-10-22/trump-revises-sept-11-executive...)?!!!

Maybe they will make it easy and simply volunteer?... With or without the next "pretext" (http://www.ae911truth.org/)

Little Hitler calls us undemocratic. Look in the mirror, Dictator! There is no longer any democracy in Turkey. Heil Hitler!

Last time I checked, the goons weren't sent over here to defend themselves in court, now did they?

Keep your storm troopers in Turkey. At least, wannabe storm troopers. More like the SA. Hoodlums in fancy dress.

Nobody on the earth wants to have your dirty democracy, steared by aipac S.Adelsohn, Soros,Certof (devil in slavic languages), Lauder from wjc, Netanyahu, (ignoring Soetoro and giving sp3ch directly to his pretorians in congress)

You know, you better keep your democracy within your borders.

Just keep our base in Incerlik, our little Gitmo, to drive that fucking Erdogan nuts.

Anybody know a good brokerage to trade the more exotic pairs like this one?

Erdog is in crosshairs, US tried to overthrow him and kill him on the plane, Russians stopped it (illuminating those two F16 with SS400 s3ek and target radars).
Erdo has nothing to lose, to contrary, leaving US, NATO, EU and going for the winning side is though advantage, I want to say.
